Another old soldier has answered to roll call for the last time and the thinning ranks of the G.A.R. have agian been invaded. The soldier's fighting finished. A man who was respected by his fellowmen has departed. A good father and kind husband sleeps the sleep that knows no waking.
Henry A. Chapin was born July 11, 1827 at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, N.Y. He enlisted as a private in Co. B. Brackett's Independent Battary, Minnesota Cavalry, Nov. 1,1861 at Blue Earth and was mustered into service at Fort Snelling. June 10, 1862 he received honorable discharge. G. will recall anew in the death of the father.
Mr. Chapin had been ill for over a year with Brights disease, which malady caused his death. The funeral will be under the auspice of the G.A.R. and W.R.C
The Herald extends sympathy to the wife and daughter who are left alone.

Sarah J. Rollins Shaw 1837-1918
Mrs. Oliver W. Shaw died at her home on South Kenwood avenue Monday night
October 21. Death was due to a paralytic stroke, following a slight stroke
last May. Since then she has been failing continually. For the past few days
she has been unconscious and the Home Call came, kindly and gently, about
midnight on Monday.
Sarah Rollins was born February 5, 1837 in Somersworth, N.H. She was
the youngest daughter of Daniel G. and Susan Jackson Rollins. There were
eleven children in the family all of whom are dead excepting one brother
George F. Rollins, residing in Washington. She came from a family noted
for its mental vigor and sturdy character. Her father was a man of wide
influence and recognized ability and her mother, Susan Binney Jackson of
Watertown, Mass., was of a family prominently identified with the upbuilding
of that state and gainers of military distinction during the Revolutionary
war. The grand parents were both of pure English descent whose ancestry
had lived in America for almost two centuries.
On January 7, 1862 Sarah Rollins and Oliver Warren Shaw were married
in the old home in Hew Hampshire-Somersworth was then known as Great Falls,
and here Mr. and Mrs. Shaw resided for a short time after marriage and
before coming to McGregor, Ia., where Mr. Shaw engaged in business. After
that they lived for a short time in Chicago, coming to Austin in 1869 where
they have since lived.
To Mr. and Mrs. Shaw were born three children, two whom are living,
Margaret, wife of Edgar I. Carter of Somersworth, N.H. and Marion Jenks,
who since the death of her husband, Mr. Jenks, last December, has made her
home with her parents in Austin. A little son was born in 1871 but died when
two months old.
The funeral services will be held at the late home Thursday afternoon at
2 o'clock with burial in Oakwood cemetery. Owing to restrictions on public
gatherings at this time the funeral will be private.
In the death of Mrs. Shaw Austin loses a peerless woman, one whose life
was lived on a high plane above the ordinary struggles and pettiness of the
average woman. Tho she knew the hardships of pioneer life, fortune was kind
to her, and save for the sorrows which no life can escape, she was shielded
by love and her own great personality from those things which make life mean
and small. You could not gossip with Mrs. Shaw, so far was her life removed
from things on which gossip and envy thrive. Her great heart went out to
all who sorrowed or were in trouble with a keen sympathy. She gloried in
success when it came to others. Those who knew her best could never remember
an ill word she had spoken of others. A wonderful record to leave behind!
She was a woman of strong intelligence and yet was blessed with the
common touch. She had great joy in the sanctity of life which was her own
home. This she made beautiful by loving care and devotion and was counted
the best and most painstaking of housewives. Faithful to the high sense of
woman's duty, she gave the best of her splendid life to her home and found
here greatest delight there with her loved ones. Gracious everywhere, she
was best and finest in her home. Here life touched the highest ideal of
which it is capable. It was so perfect that one almost hesitates to intrude
upon its sanctity. The husband was always the lover, and the children the
beloved. The atmosphere of the home was something which has made Austin
finer and lifted our ideals of what a home should be. Mrs. Shaw cared little
for social life tho genuinely fond of her friends. There was no can't in
her piety, flattery in her personality, nor censoriousness in her judgments.
She was sincere and genuine.
She was a member of the Congregational church and devoted and faithful to
its cause. Greatly will she be missed wherever the beneficent influence of
her life fell, and every gathering where she was wont to be found will be
poorer because she left us. But it is lives like hers, that live in hearts
they leave behind, and memory will be sweeter and the Home Land nearer
because she is there. We shall remember the benevolence of her face, the
richness of her voice and the rare wealth of her character, and it will
inspire confidence and faith in all womanhood. Earth is richer for the
memory and heaven is richer for possessing her.
