Bessie Jane (nee Pyburn) Gannon

1906-1992

Bessie Jane Gannon of Rochester dies 02/14/1992

Bessie Jane Gannon, 85, of Park Towers, a longtime employee of the former Rochester State Hospital, died Thursday (Feb. 13, 1992) at St. Mary's Hospital.

Born Bessie Jane Pyburn on June 19, 1906, in Dane County, Wis., she moved to the Spring Valley area with her family when she was 5. She lived in Grand Meadow from 1922 to 1924 and then in Austin where she graduated from high school in 1925. After high school, she lived in Atlanta, Ga., for a year before returning to Austin.

A Rochester resident since 1927, she came here for nurses' training and then worked at Rochester State Hospital for 28 years. On Nov. 24, 1928, she married Harold F. Gannon. Mrs. Gannon was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Royal Neighbors, VFW Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Delores Jane Bartleson of Bloomfield, N.J., Kathryn Weatherly of Rochester and Patricia Gannon of Milwaukee, Wis.; a son, Gerald of St. Charles, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Homestead United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Buller officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Macken Funeral Home and an hour before the service Monday at the church.

Gladys Ann (nee Arett) Pyburn

1931-1993

Birth: Sep. 13, 1931
Death: Aug. 10, 1993

AUSTIN -- Gladys Ann Pyburn, 61, a resident of Twin Towers, and an Austin homemaker, died Tuesday (Aug. 10, 1993) at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin. She had been ill several years.

Gladys Ann Arett was born Sept. 13, 1931, in Austin and attended Austin schools. On March 20, 1948, she married Robert Pyburn in Austin. For a number of years she had been a bookkeeper for North Main Skelly and Interstate Skelly in Austin. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Camera Club, and was a member and past president of the Austin Eagles Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gary of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Rick of Sioux City, Iowa, and David of Lansing; five grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Odland of Denecia, Calif., Mary King of San Leandro, Calif., and Barbara Kottisick of Seattle; and three brothers, Virgil Arett of Spring Valley, Ray Arett of Austin and Duane Arett of Blaine, Minn. Her parents, a brother and a sister preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin.

Goldie Margaret (nee Miller) Pyburn

1907-1998

Birth: Jul. 29, 1907
Death: Oct. 22, 1998

AUSTIN -- The funeral for Goldie Pyburn will be 2 p.m. Monday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Mrs. Pyburn, 91, a longtime Austin resident, died Thursday (Oct. 22, 1998) at Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow.

Goldie Miller was born July 29, 1907, in Austin.

On June 26, 1926, she married James A. Pyburn in Mapleton, Minnesota. Mr. Pyburn died in 1965. Her hobbies included crocheting and traveling north to fish. She also enjoyed her grandchildren.

Survivors include five sons, Robert, Roger and William, all of Austin, John of Green Valley, Ariz., and Kenneth of Menahga, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alta Miller of St. Paul, Minn. Her husband, one grandson and one sister preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service on Monday at Worlein Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Barbara L. (nee Moylan) Pluto

1939-2008

Barbara L. Pluto, 69, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, passed away on December 6, 2008 at the Golden Living Center West in Rochester, Minnesota.

She was born July 18, 1939 in Duluth, Minnesota. Her parents were Edward and Delia Moylan. She graduated from St. Peter High School in 1958. Following high school she attended Gustavus Adolphus College.

She married Dr. John Pluto on August 13, 1960 in St. Peter, Minnesota, and they moved to Austin in 1968 where John started his optometric practice.

Barbara was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Unity Chapter #29.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Jon Pluto, North Mankato, Minnesota, Christopher (Lisa) Pluto, Dodge Center, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Morgan, Sydney and Graham Pluto; brothers, James (Cindy) Utick, Duluth, Minnesota, Richard (Monica) Silet, St. Ignace, Michigan; sister-in-law, Hope (Glenn) Annexstad, St. Peter, Minnesota, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. John Pluto; brother, James Strom and sister Karen Jantzen.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Susan Wallager officiating. The pianist will be Neal Erickson.

Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Wednesday for one hour before the service. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Mankato, Minnesota.

Inez Louise (nee Lahann) Gullickson

1917-2008

Inez Louise Gullickson, 91, died on Dec. 5, 2008 at Ebenezer Ridges Care Center in Burnsville, Minnesota.

Inez was born on July 30, 1917 in Waltham, Minnesota, to Emil and Dorthea (Peters) Lahann.

On June 8, 1935 she was united in marriage to Arnold Gullickson in Osage, Iowa. He preceded her in death on August 2, 1978. Inez was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include two children, Arvid (Bonnie) Gullickson, Lyman, S.C., Lynda Brown, Eagan, Minn.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Dorthea Lahann; three brothers, LeRoy Lahann, Harold Lahann and Emil Lahann.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota.

Robert Eugene Pyburn

1926-2008

Robert Eugene Pyburn, 82, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 6, 2008, at the Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin, after a short battle with lung cancer.

He was born on September 22, 1926, on the Evergreen Farm in Austin, to James A. and Goldie Margaret (Miller) Pyburn. He attended Austin High School, graduating in 1945.

Robert married Gladys Ann Arett on March 20, 1948, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Robert was a farmer, a route driver for Red Oak Grove and Marigold Daries and later was owner/operator of North Main and Interstate Skelly service stations in Austin.

He enjoyed yard sales, auctions and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Eagles Club, serving as President in 1998, and enjoyed many volunteer activities for the Club.

Robert is survived by two sons, Rick (Suzanne) Pyburn, Sioux City, Iowa, David (Cheryl) Pyburn, Lansing; daughter-in-law, Kathy Pyburn, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; five grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Elizabeth, Bridget and Heather; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, John (Gretchen) Pyburn, Green Valley, Ariz., William Pyburn, Austin and Kenneth (Barbara) Pyburn, Menahga, Minn.; special friend, Evelyn Doubek, Austin and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys on August 10, 1993; his son, Gary on October 24, 2005 and his brother, Roger on May 2, 2002.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2008, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Kristi Koppel, officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday at the funeral home to celebrate Robert’s life. A private interment will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Kathleen L. (nee Thomas) Pyburn

1929-1995

Birth: Sep. 25, 1929
Death: Aug. 14, 1995

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- Kathleen L. Pyburn, 65, of 1201 Third Ave. S.W., died Monday (Aug. 14, 1995) at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Albert Lea.

The former Kathleen Thomas was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Mapleview, Minn. She attended Austin Public Schools and married Roger J. Pyburn Jan. 16, 1948, in Northwood, Iowa. Mrs. Pyburn worked for a short time as a waitress and was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and reading. After the couple retired, they moved to the Park Rapids area where they lived for 10 years and returned to Austin in 1993.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Susan (Mrs. Randy) Jaroch of Omaha, Neb., and Debra (Mrs. Clark) Ericksen of Glenville, Minn.; two sons, Steven Pyburn of Austin and James Pyburn of Blooming Prairie; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Ronnie Thomas of Austin. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crane Community Chapel in Austin, with the Rev. Joe Matt officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin and one hour before services at the church.

Roger J. Pyburn

1929-2002

Birth: Mar. 28, 1929
Death: May 6, 2002

Roger J. Pyburn, 73, formerly of Austin, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center.

He was born March 28, 1929, in Austin, to James and Goldie (Miller) Pyburn. He grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School.

On Jan. 16, 1947, he married Kathleen Thomas in Northwood, Iowa. The couple lived in Austin until Roger retired from the Hormel Foods Corporation in 1983. After his retirement they moved to Menahga until returning to Austin in 1993. Roger remained in Austin until moving to Albert Lea's Good Samaritan Center in November 2000. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and leather crafts.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Randy Jaroch, Greendale, Wis.; Debra Ericksen, Hayward; sons and daughter-in-law, Steven Pyburn, Austin; James and Laura Pyburn, Blooming Prairie; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Pyburn, Austin; John and Gretchen Pyburn, Green Valley, Ariz.; William Pyburn, Austin; Kenneth and Barbara Pyburn, Park Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathleen in August 1995; daughter-in-law, Kathleen.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, May 7, 2002, and one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Wendland officiating. Casket bearers will be Steven Pyburn, Randy Jaroch, James (Tony) Pyburn, Matthew Pyburn, Luke Marcks and Jon Ericksen.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Douglas L. Wilson

1925-2008

Douglas Lloyd Wilson, 83, of Austin, died at his son’s home on December 8, 2008.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1925, in Austin, the son of George L. and Mable (Hanson) Wilson. He attended school in Austin before entering the United States Army. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following his discharge, Doug returned to Austin where he worked in construction for many years.

On March 7, 1953, he was united in marriage to Irene Hansene Paulson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. The couple made their home in Austin, where Doug worked as a custodian for the Austin Public Schools until his retirement in 1990. He was an active life member of VFW Post 1216 of Austin, where he served on the color guard. He also was a member of American Legion Post 91. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bingo and gambling. He loved to dance and spend time with his family. Irene died on February 4, 2007.

Survivors include four children, Debra Jensen, Kathy Kilmer, Rebbecca “Becky” (Craig) Jurgensen and Scott (Sheri) Wilson all of Austin; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Delores (Ray) Heimsness, Austin; two brothers, Fred (June) Wilson, Woodbury and Ralph Wilson of Austin; also many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; two grandchildren, Jason Thomas and Mathew Kilmer; three brothers, George “Willie”, Kenneth and Curtis Wilson and two sisters, Joyce Sloan and Eva Shatek.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend David DeFor, officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91.

Lillian Violet (nee Pierce) Miller

1917-2008

Lillian V. Miller, 91, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota died on December 6, 2008 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota, of natural causes.

Lillian Violet Pierce was born June 6, 1917, in Lohrville, Iowa.

On September 16, 1936, she married William Glenn "Buck" Miller. She was a nurses aide at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin. She was owner and operator of the Corner Stop Cafe in Elkton and was a farm wife in Elkton and Webb, Iowa. She also owned and operated Lillian's Hobby Shop in Webb. She was active in the Dexter United Methodist Church and in People of Hope Church in Rochester. She was a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her children, Grace Marlene (Robert) Hanson, Elkton, Peggy Lou Morehouse, San Diego, Calif. and Virginia Lee "Ginny-Ginger" (Darrell) Peterson, Rochester; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 9, 1979, four brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the United Methodist Church in Dexter, with the Reverend Karen Ashton officiating. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Macken Funeral Home of Rochester is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are preferred to a food shelf of the donor's choice.

Ida Ann Frieda (nee Linnemeyer) Bray

1913-2008

Ida Ann Frieda Bray, 95, of Austin, died at Grandma B’s Elder Care in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota, on December 7, 2008.

She was born on June 26, 1913 to Henry and Mary (Oldenburg) Linnemeyer in Wykoff, Minnesota, where she grew up and received her education. She helped her sister, Sophie, with her family until her marriage to Walter Bray on May 19, 1930 in Austin. They made their home in Austin. Walter died on April 7, 1994.

Ida belonged to Ladies Aid at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing. She moved to Sunrise Cottages in Rochester in 2003 and in August of 2006 to Grandma B’s Elder Care.

Survivors include her daughters, Shirley (Donald) Hallback, Cloquet, Wendy (Joseph Niesen) Mlenar-Niesen, Rochester; son, Walter (Roxanne) Bray, Apache Junction, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Norma Bray, Austin; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Louise (Victor) LeFevere, Spring Valley, Minn.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; seven sisters; three brothers; two daughters, Lois Roseth and Barbara Thompson; two sons, George Bray and William Bray; one grandson; two great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Pastor David Fleischmann officiating. Interment is at Grandview Cemetery, Austin.

Roy LaVerne Torgerson

1921-2008

Roy LaVerne Torgerson, age 87, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 7, 2008 at Adams Health Care Center.

He was born May 17, 1921 in Austin, to Nordeen and Nora (Johnson) Torgerson. Roy graduated from Adams Public Schools and attended St. Olaf College for one year. In 1942, Roy joined the US Navy, where he served aboard 4 different ships, one of which, the U.S.S Zane, was torpedoed and sank; all crew members were rescued by the U.S.S. Hornet.

After the war Roy married Lorraine Uglum at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams in the spring of 1947. Roy and Lorraine raised one son, Roy, Jr. and four foster children, Michael, Kevin, Tom and Manda Ness. Roy spent most of his life in the grocery business. Roy was a member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church and the Adams Post #146, American Legion.

Roy is survived by his son, Roy L. Torgerson, Jr., Albert Lea, Minnesota; sister, Dorothy Smith, Queensbury, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Muriel Torgerson, Springfield, Illinois and Inez Schissel, Adams, Minnesota.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; a brother, Vance, and by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Interment will be held at Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery in Adams with Adams Post #146 American Legion in charge of military rites.

Roberta Annette (nee Foss) White

1922-2008

Roberta Annette (Foss) White, 86, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 6, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota, with her loving husband, Dean, by her side.

Bobbie was born in Wilmot, South Dakota, on August 4, 1922, to Elmer and Marian (Dubbel) Foss. She graduated as valedictorian from Wilmot High School in 1940; then received her associate of arts degree in 1942 from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota Bobbie taught elementary grades in Canistota, South Dakota, Milbank, South Dakota and Austin, for a total of eight years.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin and served on various church committees.

Bobbie survived by her husband Dean, her daughter and son-in-law, Jill (Philip) Solberg, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Jennifer Solberg and Matthew Solberg, both of Temple, Arizona.

Fulfilling Bobbie’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.

Kenneth LeRoy Wermager

1925-2008

Kenneth LeRoy Wermager, age 83, of Elkton, Minnesota died on December 9, 2008 at Austin Medical Center, Austin, Mower county, Minnesota.

He was born on June 12, 1925 in Mabel, Minnesota, to Peter and Lillian (Hagen) Wermager. Kenneth graduated from Elkton High School in 1944. Kenneth served in the Merchant Marines in World War II and in the Army during the Korean War.

On June 27, 1954 Kenneth married Mavis Gilderhus at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church. He served on the Elkton School board, the Little Cedar Church Council, the Cedar River Country Club Board of Directors. Kenneth was employed at Hormel for 38 years. In his spare time, Kenneth enjoyed dancing, fishing, playing cards, golfing, working in his flower garden; he especially loved to watch the Vikings and the Twins. He was very proud of his family and enjoyed the time spent with friends and family.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Mavis Wermager, Elkton, Minnesota; four children: Joe (Caryn) Wermager, Little Canada, Minn., Tim Wermager, Hastings, Minn., Rod (Jennifer) Wermager, Rogers, Minn. and Lisa (Jon) Dietrich, Dexter, Minn.; grandchildren, Tiffany, Travis, Chelsie and Ana; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and two sisters.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 12, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Interment will be held at Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery in Adams with Adams Post #146 American Legion in charge of military rites. The Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia (nee Mandt) Wawrzyn

1915-2008

Virginia M. Wawrzyn, 93, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 10, 2008 at the Austin Medical Center.

Virginia was born on June 11, 1915 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Joseph and Clara (Washer) Mandt. She graduated from Farmington High School in 1934 and was a graduate of Misericordia School of Nursing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

She married Edmund Wawrzyn on Aug. 31, 1940 in Farmington, Minn. They settled in Milwaukee where they raised their family. In 1978, they retired to Atlanta, Georgia, and in 1982 they moved to Adams.

Virginia was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was active in CCW and other church activities.

Virginia is survived by her sons, Barry (Kay) Wawrzyn, Lake Forest, Illinois, Ronald (Mary Anne) Wawrzyn, Fox Point, Wisconsin, Stephen A. Wawrzyn, Green Bay, Wisconsin; brothers, Donald (Rosemary) Mandt, Rose Creek, Minnesota, Robert Mandt, Rose Creek; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edmund, in 1983, and by two brothers.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams with Father James Seitz and Deacon Andrew M. Wawrzyn officiating. The organist will be Helen King. Entombment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A visitation will be held at the Adams Funeral Home on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 5 p.m.

Walton S. "Waddy" Johnson

1914-2008

Memorial services for Walton S. (Waddy) Johnson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Dan Baker will officiate. There will be no reviewal. Private interment will be held at Lakewood Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at the Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, Freeborn county, Minnesota. He was 93 years old.

"Waddy" was born on December 20, 1914, in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, the son of Simon and Elizabeth (Rockelmann) Johnson. He graduated from Austin High School (Class of 1932).

He was united in marriage to Lois (Billie) Mershon of Albert Lea on December 17, 1939, at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. He lived in Austin from his childhood until 1984, at which time they moved to Albert Lea. Waddy spent 43 1/2 years with Hormel Corporation in Austin. He was serving as price administrator prior to his retirement on March 31, 1977. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin for 40 years. He served a term as president of the congregation and was active in a number of groups and committees. He transferred to First Lutheran upon the move to Albert Lea. He was a member of the Austin Country Club from 1952 until 1992. He was a life member of the Austin Elks Lodge and a member of the Albert Lea Golden K #1 Kiwanis.

Waddy was preceded in death by his wife, Billie; his parents: Simon and Elizabeth; elder sister, Eleanor Wakefield, Fairhope, Alabama; sisters: Lois Fisher, Austin, and Barbara Knutson, Longview, Texas; nephews: Richard Fisher, Austin, Dennis Morehouse, Albert Lea, and Steve Corbin, Austin.

Waddy is survived by his son, Roger and his wife Judith of Bloomington; grandson, Dennis and his wife Nuala of Mound; two great-granddaughters: Delaney and Kiera. Also surviving are one sister, Ethel Corbin of Austin; one brother, Richard (Pat) of Sun City, Arizona; brothers-in-law, Willard Knutson of Longview, Texas, and Atwell Morehouse of Albert Lea. Nieces and nephews include: Diane Morehouse Salisbury, Abigail Wakefield Bendiks, Jackie Corbin Bowek, Susan Corbin McAllister, Barbara Corbin Nerby, Elizabeth Fisher LeFevour, David Fisher, Larry Knutson, Janet Knutson MacClary, Linda Knutson Hines, Tom Johnson, Tim Johnson and Ann Marie Johnson Kisco.

1931-2008

Carrie May "Carol" Salisbury Tindal, 77, of Brownsdale, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 10, 2008 at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, Minnesota.

Carrie was born on September 30, 1931 to John and Mary (Pace) McGraw in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota. She attended school in Austin.

In January 1948 she was united in marriage to Vergil Wibben and they had six children. They divorced in 1975. Carrie married Gene Tindal on July 5, 1980. They lived in Madison, Wisconsin until 1996 when they retired and moved to Brownsdale, where they currently resided. Carrie was a homemaker.

Carrie loved her husband, Gene; her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter, Jada; her brother Bill and her sisters Nora and Kathy. She also loved crossword puzzles, jig saw puzzles and things that challenged her mind. She also loved music. Her favorite music was hymns and she loved singing them with her church family. She had complete trust in her Lord and Savior Jesus and testified to His love for her and all that believe in Him. Her friends were very special to her and she enjoyed being with them. She prayed for all that needed healing and for our troops and for wars everywhere to end soon. She collected music boxes, puzzles, and 3-D puzzles. She loved to read. She was always willing to help those in need whenever she could. She will be greatly missed by her family and adopted family and all that knew her. Blessed be her memory.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Tindal, Brownsdale; children, Vergil Wibben Jr., Robbinsdale, Mary (John) Nystrom, Austin, Randy (Suzanne) Tindal, Brownsdale, Leslie (Randy) Westendorf, Fredericksburg, Iowa, Marty (Susan) Wibben, Rochester; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, William Salisbury, Fort Wayne, Indiana; sisters, Nora Edwards, DeRidder, Louisiana, Kathy McGraw, St. Paul, Minnesota.

She is preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Lyle; three granddaughters, Tena Richardson, Crystelina Garnett, Michelle Day.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 15, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Brownsdale with the Reverend Jerry Harris officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota.

The honorary casket bearers will be Sara Salisbury, Rick Owens, Mike Bibus, Jeff Cahoy, Brian and Nicki Christianson. The casket bearers will be Vergil Wibben Jr., Randy Westendorf, Mark Rubin, Rick Culbert, Chuck Tindal and Matt Tindal.

Arleigh I. Anthonisen

1935-2008

Arleigh I. Anthonisen, age 73, of Austin, Mower county, Minnsota, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008 at his home.

Arleigh was born on June 27, 1935 in Austin, to Hans and Margaret (Teachout) Anthonisen. He graduated from Austin High School in 1953.

Arleigh married Esther Hyland on November 12, 1961 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, Mower county, Minnesota. He worked in retail management in Austin and in his retirement he worked as a security officer. Arleigh was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he ushered for more than 30 years. Arleigh was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Arleigh is survived by his wife: Esther Anthonisen, Austin: children: Arleigh (Julie) Anthonisen, Austin, Keith Anthonisen, Austin; and Margaret (Dan) Mittelsteadt, Austin, grandchildren: Andrew (Tanya), Jeremiah, Joseph, Hannah, Elisabeth, Matthew, Brandy, Nicodemus and Michael; brother: Louis (Karen) Anthonisen, Austin, sisters-in-law: Betty (Vern) Vold, Lake Mills, Iowa and Helen Hyland, Austin; brothers-in-law: Robert (Irene) Hyland, Austin and Myron (Ernstine) Hyland, Hannibal, Mo. and his dog Shasha.

Allen was born on December 25, 1928 to Fredrick (Jock) and Ida (Davey) Bartlett. Allen served in the U.S. Army.

He married Dorothy Miller on August 22, 1953 in St. Peter, Minnesota. Allen and Dorothy lived most of their married life in Austin. Allen worked for Northwestern Bell/Quest. Dorothy and Allen started coming to Arizona as winter visitors approximately 20 years ago. They moved to Mesa permanently in 1995.

Allen was a long-time member and employee of the Eagles Club. He enjoyed playing cards with friends in Fountain of Sun. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Mesa since 1999. Allen is survived by his children: Bill (Laurie), Big Lake, Minn., Nyla (Steve) Adair, Chickamanga, Ga., Mike (Shawn), Austin, Minn., Connie (Rick) Robinson, Big Lake, Minn., Tony (Chris), Ham Lake, Minn.; 20 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sisters: Bonnie Luskey, St. Cloud, Minn., Betty Hagar, St. Peter, Minn., Mildred Sinclair, Seattle, Wash.; brothers: Tommy, St. Peter, Minn., and Jerry, St. Peter.

Pat Smith

1922-2008

Pat Smith, age 86 of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota began a new journey December 11, 2008 when he peacefully passed away at the Adams Health Care Center in Adams, Minn..

Vernon (Pat) Smith was born to John and Katherine (Gerber) Smith on June 15, 1922 in Adams Township, Mower County. He was born on the family farm. He attended Johnsburg Catholic School.

On Aug. 29, 1946, he married Marcella Mae Myre at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. The couple farmed near Johnsburg, Minnesota for more than 40 years while also raising eight children.

Pat was a member of St. John The Baptist Church and the Knights of Columbus. Pat spent hours on the dance floor with his wife throughout the years. He enjoyed horses and chariot racing with his brothers. He loved coaching softball and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. Pat also enjoyed a good card game and spending time with family and friends. He had the gift of socializing and easily building lasting friendships throughout his entire life. He was a cherished husband, father, grandpa and friend to many and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife: Marcella; two sons: Larry (June) Smith, Stacyville, Iowa, John (Lori) Smith, Adams, Minn.; six daughters: Connie (Colin) Gilles, Stewartville, Minn., Sandy (Mike) Jones, Blooming Prairie, Minn., Karen (Ron) May, Rochester, Minn, Shirley (Dave) Chadbourn, Eyota, Minn., Nancy (Mark) Willis, Morgan Hill, Calif., Mary (Mark) Meyer, Eyota, Minn., 26 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two sisters: Marita (Bud) Michels and Alvina (Walter) Theobald.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers Roy, William, and Paul.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 at the Adams Funeral Home, Knights of Columbus rosary at 5 p.m. Friends may call at the church an hour prior to mass on Tuesday.

A celebration of life for Vernon (Pat) Albert Smith will be on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, Minn. with Father James Seitz officiating. Interment will be in the St. John’s Cemetery in Johnsburg.

Bernardo William “Jim” Bishop

1920-2008

Bernardo William “Jim” Bishop, age 88, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Friday, December 12, 2008 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born on May 2, 1920 in Woodburn, Iowa to Dave and Nora (Logsdon) Bishop. He attended school in Woodburn and was united in marriage to Mavis Christofferson of Blooming Prairie on March 3, 1942. Jim moved to Minnesota with two brothers to work on farms in the Blooming Prairie area. He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific. After the war he worked for Boxford Lumber and later for United Building Center in Austin. He enjoyed hunting pheasant and deer, boating, especially pulling the kids water skiing, and pitching horse shoes. He was part of the legendary Bishop Brothers horse shoe teams. After a stroke in 1983, he and Mavis enjoyed camping at Beaver Trails for many years. He enjoyed visits with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernardo is survived by his spouse, Mavis Arlene Bishop, Austin; daughter, Charlene (Jim) Donhowe, Sun City, Ariz.; son, Bernard (Vernice) Bishop, Austin; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Howard Bishop, Sheridan, Iowa, Ronald Bishop, Ottumwa, Iowa, Bennie Bishop, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; sisters, Shirley Kent, Lucas, Iowa, Jean Chipps, Lucas, Iowa; Many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra; grandson, Dan Donhowe; brothers, Harrell, William, Robert and Freddie; and sisters, Wilda and Donna Gayle.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with Olaf B. Damm Post 1216, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Austin Post #91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Visitation will be at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

The Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy C. (nee Allen) Blanchard

1920-2008

Dorothy Blanchard, age 87, died on December 13, 2008 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minnesota, where she had resided for about four years.

Dorothy C. Allen was born on Dec. 24, 1920 in Grand Meadow, Mower county, Minnesota, to Charles and Laura Allen. She attended school in Grand Meadow, graduating in 1938. She then attended cosmetology training in Minneapolis, Minn. for two years.

On December 1, 1945 she was united in marriage to Junior “Corky” Blanchard at St. Finbarr Catholic Church in Grand Meadow. Together they lived in many communities in southern Minnesota, with the longest time spent in the Byron and Grand Meadow areas. Dorothy worked as a self employed beautician all her life. She enjoyed gardening, playing bingo, and dancing.

Dorothy is survived by six children, Mike (Mary) Blanchard, Spring Valley, Ann (Sidney) Saltz, Evanston, Illinois, Barbara (Jim) Pappas, Rochester, Paul (Jeannine) Blanchard, Orlando, Florida, James Blanchard, Rochester and Jon Blanchard, Orlando; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers; Clair Allen and Jerry (Ruth) Allen, both of Austin, and two sisters, Carol Cross, California and Bernice (Fritz) Schafer, Minneapolis, Minn.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorial services for Dorothy C. Blanchard will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 at St. Finbarr Catholic Church with the Reverend Steve Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.

The Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Daniel Mentel

1928-2008

Clarence Daniel Mentel, age 80, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Dec. 12, 2008 at Saint Marys Hospital surrounded by his family.

Clarence was born on June 4, 1928 in Austin, to Fred and Mary (Majerus) Mentel. He met Elaine Jessie Peterson of Grand Meadow at the Terp Ballroom as a young adult. They were married on June 2, 1956 at St. Augustine Church. They moved to the rural Austin area in 1960 where Elaine currently resides. Clarence and Elaine sold Shaklee products since 1972. For the past 60 years, Clarence was self-employed in a variety of endeavors including heavy equipment operation, house moving and demolition, paving, and sewer maintenance.

The family cherishes all the wonderful memories with Clarence including: rides on the golf cart, trips to the cabin, visiting with friends and travels with his children.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; three sons, Dan Mentel, Austin, Mike (Betsy) Mentel, Austin and Robert (Alyssa) Mentel, Austin; two daughters, Marlys (Derek) Lerum, Austin, Ruth (Brett) Carpenter, Zimmerman, Minn.; five grandsons, Chad Mentel, Travis Wytaske, Joe Mentel, Dustin Lerum, Jacob Carpenter; six granddaughters, Nicole (Brett) Anderson, Sara Mentel, Taylor Wytaske, Cerise Lerum, Christenia Carpenter, Elaina Carpenter and two great-grandchildren, Ella Werner and Ian Anderson. He is also survived by one brother, Harry (Stella) Mentel and one sister, Marcella Schwartz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathryn Grosland.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Interment will be in the St. Peters Catholic Cemetery in Rose Creek. There will be a CCW Rosary and a Prayer Service at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary where friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and for one hour before the service at the church.

Charles Leon James

1924-2008

Charles Leon James, age 84, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Friday, December 12, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Oakland, to Leon and Laura (Bendickson) James. He was baptized and confirmed at the Oakland Lutheran Church. Charles married Francine Jochumsen on Nov. 21, 1944. After serving in the Army for two years during World War II, he worked at the George A. Hormel Co. until his retirement in 1983. He loved to fish and golf during his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Laura; brother, Harold; and sister, Everialde.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn Monson officiating. Interment will be in the Oakland Lutheran Cemetery (Midway) in Oakland. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church.

Charles is survived by his wife, Francine James of Austin; sons: Ronald L. James of Hawaii, Steve C. James (Barbara) of Austin; daughter, Paulette H. Schwartz (David) of Audubon; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Grant C. Shorrel

1918-2008

Grant C. Shorrel, age 90, formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, passed away on December 12, 2008 at Marinuka Manor, Galesville, Wisconsin.

He was born on October 29, 1918 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to John and Mamie (Boland) Shorrel. He grew up on the south side of La Crosse. On May 31, 1941 he married Della Anderson of Hokah, Minnesota. They celebrated 67 years of marriage this past may. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from November of 1942 to July of 1945.

In 1948, Grant and Della moved with their infant son, Gary, to Austin, to work for Hormel, where he worked for 32 years. After retiring from Hormel, Grant and Della moved to their home along the river in Trempealeau. Grant served as a trustee on the Trempealeau Board and was its President for one term.

He was a member of the Eagles Club in Austin, the La Crosse American Legion Post #52 and the Galesville Masonic Lodge #177.

Survivors include his wife, Della; son, Gary (Barb), Chippewa Falls, Wis.; granddaughters, Kelly (Rob) Kress, Chandler, Ariz., Cristina (Scott) Wildenberg, Greenville, Wis.; great-grandson, Jack Ryan Wildenberg; sister, Garnet (Wally) Shong; nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.

Services will be Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Zwickey Funeral Homes Chapel in Galesville, Wis., with the Reverend Michael Hibbs officiating. Graveside services will be on Tuesday in Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse, Wis., at 2 p.m.

Wayne Ray Bell

c1921-2008

Wayne Ray Bell, 87, life time resident of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, passed away on Dec. 5, 2008 following a short illness.

Wayne graduated from Austin High School, took classes at Austin Jr. College before joining the 8th Air Force, serving in England during World War II. Wayne worked at Gildner’s Clothing and was later employed as a foreman at Hormel’s in the beef and Spam divisions, retiring in 1983. Wayne enjoyed driving his cars, traveling and carving song birds.

No services are planned. A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held in the spring, 2009. Memorials to the Mower County Humane Society.

He is survived by his daughters, Marnie (Bernie) and Karen (Wes), Minneapolis and sister, Patricia (Ed), Austin.

He was preceded in death by wife, LaDonna and father, Charlie and mother, Blanche.

David Allen Hovland

1929-2008

David A. Hovland, age 79, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 13, 2008, at Austin Medical Center.

David Allen Hovland was born on May 24, 1929 in Austin, to Harold and Olga (Lerum) Hovland. He attended local schools until he went into military service. He served twice, the end of World War II and the Korean War. He then went to work for George A. Hormel and Co., where he worked for 33 years.

David was united in marriage to Betty (Codner) Twedt on Nov. 21, 1967 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They shared many interests, including: fishing, doing puzzles, playing cards, driving the school bus and especially Harley motorcycle trips on the “Jolly Green Giant.” They also enjoyed time at their lake home at Nevis, where they lived for 16 years. David was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Eagles Club.

Surviving are his wife, Betty, Adams; stepchildren, Jackie (Jerry) Reuter, Austin and Tim Twedt, Illinois; four step-grandchildren, Brad Reuter, Scott Reuter, Stacy Reuter, Kelly Twedt; four step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Marion Travetto, Austin, Nancy Vaughan, Shakopee, Deanna (Bill) LeBarron, Worland, Wyoming; brothers, George (Lorraine) Hovland, Austin, Orlo (Helen) Hovland, Austin, Nathan (Virginia) Hovland, California, sister-in-law, Ruth Hovland, Austin, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harold and Olga Hovland; siblings, Emery, Dean (a twin), Irene and Henry (twins in infancy), Arthur (infancy).

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Pastor Russell Wangen officiating. Patricia (nee Murphy) Hegge

1934-2008

Patricia Hegge, age 74, of Grand Meadow, Mower county, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 15, 2008 at the Grand Meadow Healthcare Center in Grand Meadow following a battle with cancer. She had resided at the care center since August.

Patricia was born on May 6, 1934 in Austin, to Bernard and Anna (Johnson) Murphy. She attended school through the eighth grade, at that time she quit school to help take care of her siblings. She was united in marriage to Vernon Eugene Hegge on Jan. 8, 1952 in Rose Creek, Minn. He died in 1983. Patricia was a homemaker. She enjoyed summer trips traveling with her grandchildren to visit family members, listening to Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash and she also volunteered for many years at the Eagles Club in Austin. Pat had moved to Austin in 1985 and moved back to Grand Meadow in August of 2006.

She is survived by her children, Judy (Pat) Stier, Racine, Jim (Elaine) Hegge Kewanee, Ill., Jean (Joe) Stier, Grand Meadow, Jeff (Jeannie) Hegge, Mission, Texas, Jerry (Tammie) Hegge, Centennial, Colo., Jason (Shelly) Hegge, Aurora, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Donna Numsen Lacrosse, Wis., Catherine (Bill) Klingfus Austin, Nancy O’Rourke, Lakeville, Minn.; two brothers, Bernard Jr. (Joan) Murphy, Aurora, Colo. and Tim (Merry) Murphy, Collinsville, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; grandson, Adam; two great-grandchildren, Hope and Isreal.

A memorial mass for will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at St. Finbarr Catholic Church with the Father Steve Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. Friends may call at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Charles R. Paulson

1964-2008

Charles R. Paulson, age 44, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 16, 2008, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born on July 7, 1964 to Wilmer and Norma (Coovert) Paulson in St. Paul, Minn. When Charles was six years old, the family moved to Austin where he attended school. He worked for Cedar Valley Services for many years. Charlie enjoyed watching the NFL and games shows, and he liked the attention he received from the people he spent time with.

He is survived by brothers, John (Theresa) Paulson, St. Paul, Tom Paulson, Arden Hills; nephew, Tom; aunts and uncles, Norman and Barb Paulson, Osseo; Glenn and Berniece Paulson, Fargo, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment is on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at Roselawn Cemetery, 803 W. Larpenter, Roseville.

Mabel (nee Hudechek) Penkava

1934-2008

Mabel Penkava, age 93, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 16, 2008 at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie.

Mabel was born on August 16, 1915 in Lansing Township, [Mower county ?] Minnesota, to John and Minnie (Saman) Hudechek.

On December 4, 1934 she was united in marriage to Joseph Penkava in Mower County. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1994. Mabel was a homemaker and she loved her family. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, doing puzzles and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Irene Noble, Austin; daughter-in-law, Carol Penkava, Lyle; four grandchildren, Darwin Noble, Austin, Connie (Rick) Willmott, Platte, S.D., Kathy (Miqual) Garcia, Nevada, Iowa, Allen (Mary) Penkava, Austin; 9 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Richard Penkava and Donald Penkava; son-in-law, Ronald Noble.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with Todd Portinga officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service on Monday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The casket bearers will be Darwin Noble, Allen Penkava, Kenneth Penkava, Rick Willmott, Eric Willmott and John Penkava.
