Clara Josephine (nee Srp)(McCauley) Noble

1918-2008

Clara Josephine Noble, age 90, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Nov. 11, 2008 at Sacred Heart Care Center where she was a resident.

Clara was born Feb. 25, 1918 in Oakland, Minn. to Joseph and Josephine (Pliml) Srp. She attended Austin High School. She married Wilfred McCauley and they were later divorced. On Oct. 10, 1946 she was united in marriage to Ralph Noble in Austin. Clara and Ralph have made Austin their home for more than 62 years. They lived on the farm for many years before moving to The Cedars and then to Sacred Heart Care Center. Clara and Ralph sold their farm homesite to their grandson, Jason, whom they also helped to raise.

Clara enjoyed life on the farm being a homemaker and mother, and assisting Ralph in running the family farm. She loved to cook, bake, work in her garden and grow flowers. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and loved the yearly family gatherings.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Noble, Austin; daughters: Sr. Donna McPhail, Riceville, Iowa, Sandra (Dennis) Berhow, Stewartville, Marie (Darrell) King, Austin, Carol Schlichter (Virgil Waltz), Austin; grandchildren: Renae (Keith) Weipert, Bonnie (Roger) Ladner, Micki (Keith) Winkels, Ted McPhail, Matthew King, Jason (Darcy) Schlichter, Melissa King (Shannon Schewe); 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marion Srp, Austin; brother-in-law, Richard (Angie) Ginder, Stacyville, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Frank, Chuck and Joe Srp; sisters, Marion Ginder and Luella Olson; son-in-law, Charles McPhail; grandson, Daryl McPhail.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Kristi Koppel officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home and half-hour hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The casketbearers will be Clara's grandchildren.

Susan Kay Knowlton

1945-2008

Susan Kay Knowlton, age 63, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota on November 2, 2008.

She was born on August 27, 1945 in Austin, to Lyle and Rosella (Bothun) Knowlton. Susan began her career as a licensed practical nurse and later graduated as a registered nurse from Austin Community College. As she helped others during her life, she was helped especially in her last days by heroic and loving friends Georgette Hinkle, Jackie Kottner, Peggy Askerud, nephew Steven Knowlton and niece Claudia Knowlton-Chike.

Susan is survived by her son, Robert Haaland, San Francisco, California; by three sisters: Marjorie Anderson, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Mary Jane Knowlton, Rochester, and Carol (Richard) Warfield, Austin; by three brothers: Richard (Nancy) Knowlton, Vail, Colo., Robert (Joan) Knowlton, Scottsdale, Ariz., Gary (Mary) Knowlton, Prior Lake, Minn.; by nieces and nephews: Candace Fish, Cassandra Holmstrom, Peggy Swanson, Cindy Myers, James Flannery, Mark Warfield, Rich Warfield, Michelle Tomasulo, Jackie Lopez-Ona, Tom Knowlton, Debbie Hodge, Scott Knowlton, Kimberly Rice, Claudia Knowlton-Chike, David Knowlton, Julie Wham, Bill Knowlton and Steve Knowlton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Rosella Knowlton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Crane Community Chapel in Austin with the Reverend Dale Christiansen officiating. The Pianist will be Neal Erickson with soloist, Claudia Knowlton-Chike. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Mayo Clinic Development.

Leonard Egen

1920-2008

Leonard “Speed” Egen, age 88, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, and long-time resident of Stewartville, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Our House Memory Care in Austin where he has resided for the past two years.

Leonard grew up in Stewartville, graduated from Stewartville High School and attended Mankato Teachers College in Mankato, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After his discharge he returned to Stewartville where he was a homebuilder and carpenter until his retirement.

Leonard was born on February 8, 1920, in Stewartville. He married Eleanor Johnson on Feb. 6, 1987 at Cape Coral, Florida and were later divorced.

He was a longtime member of Stewartville American Legion Post #164 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8980.

He is survived by three stepdaughters: Diana Johnson (Everett Rush), of Brownsdale, Minn., Cheryl (Jim) Wolfgram, McGregor, Minn., Julie (Loren) Theel of Eyota, Minn.; two stepsons: James (Lynn) Johnson, Rose Creek, Minn., Curtis Johnson, Kasson, Minn.; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Beverly Reep, of Lady Lake, Fla., Patty Butler, Las Vegas, Carol Egen, San Francisco; 24 nieces and nephews.

Funeral servies will be Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home, Stewartville, officiated by the Reverend Matt Fasnacht. Interment will be at St. Bernards Catholic Cemetery with military honors by the Stewartville American Legion and VFW Honor Guards. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Robert Ebert

1928-2008

Paul Robert Ebert, age 80, of rural Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Friday, November 14, 2008, at his home.

He was born May 4, 1928, in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, the son of Fred and Ella (Haase) Ebert. He moved to Newry Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota, in 1934, where he attended country school. He was drafted during the Korean War and returned to Minnesota following his discharge where he worked as a carpenter for the railroad for many years. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews. He was a member of the VFW.

Survivors include his sister, Mildred Peterson, rural Austin; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leslie, Lloyd and John; sisters, Marie and Dorothy.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, with Pastor Mike Olmsted of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in the Blooming Prairie Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 91. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred to the Donor’ choice.

Arthur Edward Dubke

1928-2008

Arthur Edward Dubke, age 80, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on November 14, 2008, at his home.

He was born July 30, 1928 to Arthur and Adella (Fink) Dubke in Austin. Art grew up in Austin and graduated from St. Augustine Catholic High School in 1946. He was a mass server during his school years and also while in the Army. A veteran of World War II with the Eleventh Airborne Division, Art spent a year in Japan. There he earned his Paratrooper Wings and his Glider Wings. A member of the American Legion, life member of DAV and of the 187th Regimental Combat Team, he was very proud of his service time.

He married Maxine “Mickey” Hanson on May 28, 1949, at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. They made their home in Austin where Art’s father taught him the bakery business. A life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Art was also a long time member of Lions International. He belonged to the Austin “Noon” Lions and was an associate member of Mesa “Host” Arizona Lions Club. Art chaired many committees and held several elective offices.

He was elected District Governor for 1996-97 and served as a trustee of the Lions MD5M Hearing Foundation at the University of Minnesota for ten years. Also while a member of the Lions, he earned many awards, such as: the Melvin Jones Fellowship, Helen Keller Sight Award, Hearing Research Fellowship, Lions Club International Foundation, Lion of the Year and five International Presidents Certificates of Appreciation.

He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and a Tennessee Squire of Moore County, Tenn. During his marriage to Mickey, Art attended St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he was a Stephen’s minister. After her death he returned to his Catholic background where he was deacon and committee member at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Art was a caregiver for several older adults and delivered Meals on Wheels. He served on the Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee and was involved in the Ambassadors, Jaycees, Izaac Walton League, United Way, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Wild Turkey Federation and Hiawatha “71.” He retired in 1993 from Sterling Bank. Mickey died on July 12, 2001. Art spent winters in Arizona from 2002 through last year.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (Bruce) Tiegen, Bemidji, Joan (Daniel) Gunderson, Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren, Brooke, Ashley and Hailey Tiegen, Derek (Jessica) and Stefanie Gunderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mickey; three infant children, Edward, JoAnn and James.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may greet the family for one hour prior to the service. Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, is in charge of arrangements. Interment is at Calvary Cemetery in Austin with military honors by American Legion Post 91. Memorials are preferred to Minnesota Lions Bank and Minnesota Lions Hearing Foundation.

Hazel Clarine (Handeland) Evans

1942-2008

Hazel C. (Mrs. John S.) Evans, 66, of Faribault, died on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Prior Lake.

Hazel Clarine, the daughter of Ernest and Mable Handeland was born on Jan. 20, 1942 in Austin. She attended country school and graduated from Austin High School. She attended Wartburg and Waldorf Colleges and later received her master’s degree in Math. She taught school in Iowa and later at Faribault Junior High School for 30 years. She married John S. Evans on Dec. 12, 1971 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2003. She was very active in volunteering in her community and church.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa (Bryan) Smith, Prior Lake; two grandchildren, Julia Smith, Fargo, N.D. and Devin Smith, Prior Lake; her mother, Mable Handeland, Austin; four siblings, Ione (Duane Linsey) Johnson, Bemidji, Elaine (Dave) Macy, Mission Viejo, Calif., Cynthia (Reverend Bruce) Hannem, Nisswa and Gordon (Donna) Handeland, Austin; nieces; nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John and her father, Ernest Handeland.

Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Faribault, with the Reverend Allan Nelson officiating. Interment will be held in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be held in the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 from 3 to 7 p.m. and also in the church for one hour prior to the services on Wednesday. Richard Dean Molde

1930-2008

Richard Dean Molde died at home on November 16, 2008. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 16, 1930 to Irene and Dean Molde.

During the depression, the family moved to Blooming Prairie, Minnesota until employment opportunities allowed them to move to Austin. Dick graduated from Austin High School in 1948 and he enlisted in the Navy at 17 years of age. He served on the submarine U.S.S. Sea Robin during the Korean War. When his enlistment was completed, he returned to Austin where he worked with his father as a home builder for Miller-Molde Construction Co.

On September 19, 1953 he was married to Berniece Wyant at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. To their union three children were born; Nancy, William and Jane. He later moved to Rochester, Minnesota. to begin his 25 year employment at IBM. The majority of his life was spent living in Stewartville, Minnesota. with his family. Dick liked to hunt and fish in his younger years, and was involved in caring for his older friends and family later on in his life. Flowers, backyard birds and animals were a source of special enjoyment for him as things became harder for him to do. Dick had a strong faith in God and always had time for devotions, religious books and programs.

He is survived by his wife, Berniece; daughters, Nancy (Tom) Allen, Kasson, Minn. and Jane (Joe) Himmer, Stewartville; sister, Diane (Dave) Dammen, Austin; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law; nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Bill.

Dick's funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at the River of Life assembly of God Church in Stewartville, Minn. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, also in Stewartville.

The Griffen-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville is in charge of arrangements.

Gene Enright

1929-2008

Gene Enright, age 79, formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died peacefully on November 12, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, Minnesota.

He was born on February 21, 1929 to John and Fern (Grugger) Enright in Brownsdale, Mower county, Minnesota. He attended area schools and served four years in the Navy during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge. He was a member of the American Legion Post 91 and the Honor Guard.

On July 27, 1957 he and DeLora Cieminski were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He was employed by Hormel Foods before having his own business.

Gene enjoyed playing hockey and coached youth hockey for several years. He as president of the Austin Hockey Association and a lead fundraiser when it built the Riverside Arena. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and his grandchildren’s activities. He was devoted to his family which gave him his greatest joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence (Mildred), Everett and Maynard (Jake); sisters, Mildred Leone and LaVonne Kuether.

He is survived by his wife, DeLora; son, Greg (Gerri) Enright; daughter, Susan Enright; grandchildren, Jonathon, Christina, Natalie, Nicole, Jason, Mark and four great-grandchildren. The family thanks Dr. Jett, Dr. Krook, Dr. Kleinschmidt and St. Luke’s staff for their care and kindness and all who showed Gene their love.

A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2009. Arrangements are by Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth, Minnesota.

Ryan Mark Machacek

2080-2008

Ryan Mark Machacek, age 28, of Rochester died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Ryan was born May 18, 1980 in Austin and attended area schools. He was employed by Valiant Flying Museum. He enjoyed NASCAR, stock car racing, football, fishing, flying and spending time with his family.

Survivors include a son: Aiden Machacek, Rochester; mother: Lisa (Daniel) Walker, Byron, Minn.; father: Rick Machacek, Austin; grandmothers: Lois Schmieder, Karen Machacek and Beverly Walker, all of Austin; special friend: Amanda Chinn, Rochester; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers: Louie Schmieder, Earl Machacek and Elsworth Walker.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Paul Nelson officiating. The family will greet friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Sunday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Charles John Schwartz

1925-2008

Charles John Schwartz, age 82 of Rose Creek, Minn. died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at Stewartville Care Center.

Charles was born Dec. 31, 1925 in Rose Creek to Charles and Elizabeth (Fink) Schwartz.

Charles attended St. Rest grade school in Windom Township and graduated from Austin High School in 1943. Charles purchased the homestead where he farmed his entire life. He drove ambulance and taxi in Austin and also drove bus for the Oak Grove Activity Center. He retired in 1989.

On Nov. 5, 1988, he married Roberta Jean Hale at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Rose Creek. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish in Rose Creek, where he served on the church council. Charles was a charter member of the Lady Slipper model A club.

In his spare time, he enjoyed, antique cars, playing the accordion, polka dancing, and playing cards. Charles was known to ride his bike to church on Sundays and to Austin to pick up his car from the repair shop.

Charlie loved God, his Allis Chalmers tractors, and his cat Garfield.

Charles is survived by his wife: Roberta “Bertie” Schwartz, Rose Creek, Minn.; sister: Rita (Lynn) DeRemer, Austin; brother: Lawrence Schwartz, Austin; nieces and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Charles and Helen Hale, Rochester, Minn..

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, sister-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father James Seitz and Father Clayton Haberman Officiating. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Rose Creek. There will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Prayer Service on Tuesday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. and also at the church on Wednesday for one hour before the service.

The family prefers memorials to Mayo Clinic or St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Ellen Friedrich

1912-2008

Ellen Friedrich, 96, Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died November 21, 2008 at St. Mark’s Nursing Home.

Ellen was born on February 19, 1912 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Ellen and her sister were adopted by Rev. and Mrs. Gustav Meyer.

A graduate of Westmar Academy and Westmar University, Le Mars, Iowa, with bachelor of arts and bachelor of music degrees, Ellen attended the University of Lincoln, Nebraska for post-graduate work. She taught high school and elementary grades for many years in Nebraska and Minnesota.

Gifted in music and an excellent violinist, Ellen was a church organist, choir director, and Sunday school and Bible class teacher. She was accomplished at embroidery and crocheting, leaving a legacy of art for family and friends. Ellen was president of the Minnesota South District LWML for eight years. Since moving to Austin, she was active in the Ladies Aid, Ladies Circle, and Bible classes at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Ellen married Rev. Edwin Friedrich on June 12, 1940. She and he enjoyed traveling and together they journeyed to Germany and the Holy Land. Ellen also enjoyed spending family time with her seven children, 20 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

Survivors include one son: Gustav, New Jersey; four daughters: Miriam (Lloyd) Luehmann, Austin, Minn.; Mary (Charles) Rohe, Zumbrota, Minn.; Muriel (Gene) Stark, Glenwood, Minn.; Marilyn Friedrich, Huntington Beach, Calif.; son-in-law: Wallace Fromm, Sparta, Wis.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, two daughters, Martha Fendt and Margaret Fromm, and a sister and brother.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Austin, with the Rev. Jeffrey Sage officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery; Albert Lea, Minn. Friends may call at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Austin one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or a charity of one’s choice.

"Casey" (Phyllis) (nee McCully) Bernholtz

1952-2008

Casey (Phyllis) Bernholtz, age 56, of Waltham, Mower county, Minnesota, died at home on November 22, 2008, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Casey was born on June 18, 1952 in Warrensburg, Missouri, daughter of Wanda McCully. Casey graduated from Warrensburg High School. As a young adult, Casey moved to Rockwell City, Iowa.

On June 9, 1973 she married Steve Bernholtz in Lake City, Iowa, and they made their first home in Waseca, Minn.

Second to loving her family, Casey loved to bowl. She has spent many years enjoying time with the ladies on the various leagues she has bowled on. Casey was a member of Our Lady of Loretto in Brownsdale, where she spent many years doing the bookkeeping. She had been employed by the First Farmers and Merchants bank in Brownsdale as a Bank Officer for the last 17 years, working with the most kind, caring, people.

Surviving are her husband, Steve, Brownsdale; three daughters, Jill (Roy) Baker, Austin, Jenessa (Nic) Hill, Winona and Danielle Bernholtz and her fiancé, Russ Crabtree, Austin; four grandchildren, Terren, Kasey and Rylee Baker and Wyatt Crabtree; step-father, Junior McCully, Warrensburg, Mo.; mother and father-in-law, Don and Bev Bernholtz, Lake City, Iowa; sister, LaNora Merrill, Warrensburg; two brother-in-laws, Jack Hoffman, Margate, Fla., Tom (Darel) Bernholtz, Denison, Iowa; three sister-in-laws, Susie (Daryl) Reiling, Auburn, Iowa, Ann (Jeff) Wenck, Lidderdale, Iowa, and Kris (Scott) Bender, Spencer, Iowa.

Casey was preceded in death by her mother, Wanda McCully, and by a sister, Erma Hoffman; and by a niece, Rhonda Rosheck.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Interment was at the Greenwood cemetery at Brownsdale. Casket bearers were: Steve Janssen, Don Naatz, Rick Neuvirth, Pat Pokorney, Darrell Trom and Dale Underwood. Honorary casket bearers are: Merrils Petzenhauser, Mark Morrow, Dr. Arthur Mally, Phil Hatten, Tim Neuvirth, Brian Neuvirth and Jerry Melody.

Frances Adeline (nee Schroeder) Kolb

1915-2008

Frances Adeline Kolb, 93, of Austin, died on Nov. 22, 2008 at the Austin Medical Center.

Frances was born May 29, 1915 in Austin to Frederick and Emma (Meyer) Schroeder. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church by Pastor Milbrath. She was the fifth of seven children. On June 22, 1935 she was united in marriage to Louis C. Kolb in Austin. He preceded her in death on February 20, 1991.

Frances was a homemaker and she lived in Austin her whole life. She spent some time in the 1960s working at Kolb Bakery. Frances enjoyed playing cards at the senior center, baking, gardening, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, David (Sally) Kolb, Austin, John (Judy) Kolb, Post Falls, Idaho; five grandchildren, Scott Kolb, Austin, Steven (Judy) Kolb, Scottsdale, Ariz., Aaron (Ami) Kolb, Oak Park, Ill., Susan (Scott) Lewis, Post Falls, Idaho, Jason (Ana) Kolb, Somerset, N.J.; 14 great-grandchildren.

David Brian Gieske

1952-2008

David Brian Gieske, age 56, of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on November 24, 2008 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in Onalaska.

David was born in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, on February 14, 1952 to Walter and Mae (Kraby) Gieske. David graduated from Austin High School in 1970 and continued his education, receiving a diploma from Winona State University. On April 30, 1983 David married the Reverend E. Marlene Pankonin.

David worked for Hormel Foods in Austin and Key Cadillac in Edina, Minn. before starting his own business, Classic Components, where he specialized in the detail and restoration of 1955, 1956, and 1957 Chevrolets.

David enjoyed traveling, watching movies and helping his wife, Marlene, in church activities where they served families in Kasson, Minn., Spring Valley, Minn., Muskegon, Mich. and Ettrick, Wis.

David loved his dogs and especially his 1957 Chevy and memorabilia collection.

David is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; mother, Mae Gieske; sister, Mary (James) LaRock, Kasson, Minn.; brother, John (Faye) Gieske, Prattville, Ala.; nieces and nephews, Jenna, Jason, and Erik LaRock and Elizabeth Gieske.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at First Lutheran Church, 401 Main Street, Onalaska. Bishop James Arends, the Reverend Breck McHan, and Jason Stanton will officiate. Burial will be held in Oak Wood Cemetery, in Austin. Family and friends may call the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska, Wis. on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Richard “Dick” W. Phillips

1937-2008

Richard W. “Dick” Phillips, age 71, of International Falls, Minnesota. died on November 20, 2008 in Yuma, Arizona.

Dick was born on May 27, 1937 at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin to Fred J. and Virginia L. Phillips. He attended Columbus grade school and St. Augustine High School in Austin. He graduated in 1955 from St. Augustine and went on to attend the St. John’s University from 1955 to 1957. Dick enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. He served in the Army Security Agency as a Morse Code radio operator. He achieved the rank of sergeant. Following his enlistment he attended the Austin Junior College from 1960 to 1961 and graduated with an associate of arts degree.

He then attended Mankato State University from 1961 to 1963 and graduated with bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees. From 1963 to 1964 Dick taught at Pacelli High School in Austin, then returned to the Mankato State University during 1964 and 1965 when he graduated with a master’s degree in history. In 1966 and 1967 he worked as a corrections agent for the State of Minnesota in Albert Lea. From 1967 to 1999 he taught history and economics at Rainy River Community College in International Falls, and was one of the founding faculty members of the Rainy River Community College in 1967. He retired in 1999 after 32 years of teaching. Between 1974 and 1996 Dick worked at the Naturalization and Immigration Service as a summer seasonal inspector on the International Bridge in International Falls.

In 2002 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Alyce Vohler Pelto Busch Phillips. In his spare time Dick loved watching sports. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling to Mexico to have his cerveza. He also enjoyed meeting new people and he never met a stranger. He always believed in what was right. He also said he “never met anyone who, for what they believed, was wrong.” He was an active member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church and the International Falls Elks Lodge.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marilyn; stepson, Bob Pelto, Elk River, Minn.; step-daughters, Lori Pelto, Monticello, Minn. and Lisa (John) Follmer, Elk River; step-grandchildren, Jake and Jani Larsen, Kristina and Brianna Busch and step-great-granddaughter Adison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Virginia.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Catholic Church with a 6:30 p.m. Rosary. A funeral mass will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at the St. Thomas Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, International Falls, following services. Mary Jane (Hjelmen) Gifford

1953-2008

Mary Gifford, 55, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on November 23, 2008 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Mary Jane Hjelmen was born on January 5, 1953, in Austin, to Gordon and Goldie (Berge) Hjelmen. She graduated from Austin High School and continued her education by getting an LPN degree in nursing.

Mary was united in marriage to Marc Gifford, and they were later divorced. She lived in Iowa and later moved to Blooming Prairie in 1994 where she continued to make her home. Mary worked for more than 10 years at Prairie Manor Care Center as a nurse. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Blooming Prairie. Mary loved to take care of people, to spend time with the grandchildren, liked to travel and cook and enjoyed decorating the house for Christmas.

Surviving are her parents, Gordon and Goldie Hjelmen; five children, Paul Hjelmen, Austin, Erin (Gunnar) Grossbach, Owatonna, Megan (Sean) Driscoll-Hunt, Dallas, Ga., Josh Gifford and Rachel Gifford, Blooming Prairie; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Alwes, Zoey Alwes, Paige Grossbach; brothers, Steve Hjelmen and Mike Hjelmen, Blooming Prairie, Richard (Renee) Hjelmen, South Dakota; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her nephew Michael John Hjelmen; grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at the First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, Minn., with the Reverend Karl Korbel officiating. Interment will follow the service in First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Blooming Prairie.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 28, at the Worlein-Blooming Prairie Funeral Home in Blooming Prairie and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Jay Arthur Blom

1948-2008

Jay Arthur Blom, age 59, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on November 24, 2008.

Jay was born on December 23, 1948, in Austin, to Gus and Mary Blom of rural Rose Creek. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Elkton High School. Jay had one year of college.

On August 24, 1968 he was united in marriage to Vikki Swanson at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin.

Jay was drafted into the United States Army on Jan. 14, 1969. He was in Vietnam for 16 months. Jay worked at Austin Utilities for 35 years, first as a light equipment operator and in the Generation Department, and the last years as supervisor of power and water. Jay was a member of the American Legion and Pheasant Habitat Club for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish and go camping with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Vikki Blom, Austin; son, Jason (Tara) Blom, Austin; daughter, Melissa (Wayne) Boullion, Austin; three grandchildren, Jacob, McKinzey, Jessa; three step-grandchildren, Brandon, Kelsey, Megan; five brothers, John (Delia) Blom, Laughlin, Nev., Jerry (Jane) Blom, Casper, Wyo., Joel (Linda) Blom, Austin, Joy Blom, Austin, Jules (Shari) Blom, Jordan; three sisters, Judy (James) Kuempel, Blaine, Janice (Bob) VanLuevan, Custer, S.D., Jolene Nelson (Vern), Austin.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Mary; stepmother, Alpha; granddaughter, Brittany.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also a half-hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Hoflanda Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91.

Beata Theresa Juhnke

1909-2008

Beata Theresa Juhnke, 99, of Hayfield, Minnesota, died on Friday morning, Nov. 28, 2008, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, Minnesota.

Beata was born July 25, 1909, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Milius) Matter in Waltham, Mower county, Minnesota.

She was married to Ewald Juhnke in January 1930. She and her husband farmed in the rural Waltham area. Beata moved to Hayfield in 1993, and to Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield in November 2007. She enjoyed scrapbooking, quilting and church activities.

Beata is survived by her son: Gerald (Joyce) Juhnke, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Anita (Ralph) Senjem, Hayfield; and one brother: Arnold Matter, Waltham. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1967; one brother; and one sister.

The funeral service for Beata Theresa Juhnke will 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in rural Waltham with the Rev. John Heruth officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Mathilda Gertrude Gilgenbach

1908-2008

Mathilda (Tillie) Gertrude Gilgenbach, age 100, died Thursday evening, November 27, 2008 at the Adams Health Care Center, Adams, Minnesota.

Mathilda was born to John and Mary (Fasbender) Gilgenbach on April 20, 1908 in Lodi Township, Mower County, Minnesota. She attended the Lodi country school and the Sacred Heart School in Adams.

Tillie worked for the Kahler Hotel in Rochester as a waitress for 43 years, retiring in 1973. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, traveling and fishing. She has been a resident of the Adams Health Care Center since April 1, 1995.

Mathilda is survived by sister-in-law: Isabelle Gilgenbach, Adams; brother-in-law: Richard Badger, Rochester; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Edward (in infancy), Francis and Alfred; and sisters Mildred Koenigs, Agnes Smith and Betty Badger.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father James Seitz Officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Adams. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. with a 4 p.m. Rosary service, and also at the Funeral Home on Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

James Richard Underdahl

1934-2008

James Richard “Jim” Underdahl, age 74, of Austin died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital, in Rochester.

Jim was born on May 31, 1934 in Taopi, Minn., to Leon and Elvina (Adams) Underdahl. Jim attended Austin Public Schools and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After returning from the army, he married Lee Doerhoefer. The couple had two children and were later divorced.

He held various jobs in the Austin area and then attended school in Minneapolis to become a barber. He barbered in Austin and Lyle for many years. He married Georgia Kuhl on Dec. 27, 1975 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin.

Jim loved country-western music, loved the outdoors and liked to deer hunt and fish. He loved is dogs, taking them for rides in the car, tinkering with his “toys.” He enjoyed people and barbering. A lifelong Austin resident, he entered St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in January 2006.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter: Joyce Underdahl, Wabasha, Minn.; two sons: Rick (Cindy) Underdahl, Austin and Tim Kuhl, St. Cloud, Minn.; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; brothers: Paul (Betty) Underdahl, Roger Underdahl, and Donald (Pat) Underdahl, all of Austin; sisters: Deloris (Bill) Hanson and Diane (Danny) Titus, both of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ronald, David, and Robert and sisters, Marian and Darlene.

Funeral services will be held at Worlein Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 with Pastor Pam Solberg officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service. Valaria Ann "Larrie" (nee Koll) Wagner

1923-2008

Valaria Ann "Larrie" Wagner, 85, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Nov. 21, 2008 at the Owatonna Commons in Owatonna, Minnesota.

Born June 24, 1923 in Melrose, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Loretta and Gus Koll.

She married Robert Leon Wagner at Fort Snelling, Minn. on June 29, 1945 and enjoyed more than 63 years of marriage. There was nothing Valaria loved more than her family, her volunteer work, and her deep devotion to her faith and St. Augustine church, where she was an active volunteer and a member of the church choir. She, along with her husband Bob, was a volunteer at Sacred Heart for many years. She also enjoyed working at the Philomathian Library.

An avid card player, she loved playing bridge and being with her friends. Valaria also found great pleasure in cooking, sewing and her extensive collection of Precious Moments figurines. Valaria will be remembered for her many qualities but especially for deep love for her husband and family, which was felt by all.

Survivors include her three sons, Tom (Deb), Castle Rock, Colorado, Dave (Terry), Chaska, Minnesota, Mike (Ann), Los Angeles, Calif.; son-in-law, Harry Harwick, Estes Park, Colorado; grandchildren, Lindsay (Wagner) Vatterott and husband Franco, Ryan Wagner, Nicole (Wagner) Sopena and husband Victor, Megan Wagner and Sydne Harwick; two great-grandchildren, Kylan Vatterott and Layla Vatterott; brothers, Tony (Marie) Koll, Chaska, Richard Koll, Sauk Rapids, Minn., Gerald Koll, Fenton, Mich.; sister, Margie (Koll) Schmidt, Willmar, Minn.; sister-in-law, Lois Koll, Sebeka, Minn.; brother-in-law, Williard (Genevieve) Wagner, Austin. She is also survived by 17 nieces and 11 nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert on July 8, 2008, and her daughter, Carol Ann Harwick.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and also a half-hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

Mary Ann (nee Mueller) Anderson

1912-2008

Mary Ann Anderson, age 95, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at Adams Health Care Center.

She was born May 17, 1913 in Austin Township, Mower county, Minnesota, to Joseph and Margaret (Schottler) Mueller. Mary Ann graduated from St. Augustine High School in Austin and then from Winona State University with a bachelor's degree. She started her 45-year career teaching in a one-room rural school house in Taopi.

The last 31 years of her career were spent at the Neveln Elementary School in Austin. Mary Ann was married to Edward S. Anderson on Nov. 21, 1953 at Queen of Angels Church in Austin.

Mary Ann was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. She was an active unit member, a member of R.E.A.M., AEA, MEA and NEA. She was a charter member of the Adams Health Care Center Auxiliary and the American Legion Post No. 146 Auxiliary of Adams.

She enjoyed her gardening, flowers and nature. She was an avid maker of rosaries, many of which went to foreign missions. Spending time with her family was always of great importance to her.

Mary Ann is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Louise Anderson, Austin; grandchildren, Sarah and Ryan Qualey, Austin, Katie Corbin, Austin, Joshua Corbin, Austin, Brenna Corbin, Austin, great-grandson, Colton Qualey; sister, Margaret Epley, Austin; nieces and nephews; Great-nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father James Seitz officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Austin.

Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., with a rosary service at 4 p.m. and a 6 p.m. prayer service, and at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Casket Bearers will be Bob Rueter, Roger Epley, Jane Sathre, Mary Jo McKenney, Darlene Pater, Jim Epley and Richard Epley.

Bradley Joseph Baker

1958-2008

Bradley Joseph Baker, age 50, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Dec. 1, 2008, at his home.

He was born October 15, 1958 to Lowell and Helen (Mondzak) Baker in Austin, where he grew up and attended school. After graduating from Austin High School in 1977, Brad went on to graduate from Minnesota State University in Mankato. He was dearly loved by his family and will always be remembered for his love and care for them.

Survivors include his mother, Helen Baker, Austin; sisters, Linda (Dan) Fredenburg, Maple Grove, Loann (Jeff) Maas, Plymouth; brothers, Blaine (Lori) Baker, Kelseyville, Calif., Bryce (Carol) Baker, Deephaven, Robert (Debbie) Baker, Spokane, Wash.; nieces and nephews, whom he adored.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lowell; sister, Lori and brother, Bryan.

Mae Ruth (nee Jacobson) Boe Kasten

1917-2008

Mae Boe Kasten, 91, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 1, 2008 at the Austin Medical Center.

Mae Ruth Jacobson was born on April 12, 1917 to Gustave and Lillian (Withers) Jacobson, near Elkton, Minnesota. She graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1935.

In March 1936, she married Everett (Shorty) Boe of Adams, Minnesota. They lived in Adams until 1979, after Everett had an accident, they moved to Rose Creek. Everett passed away on December 1, 1985. [Everett was born on March 28, 1914]

Mae married Delbert Kasten on November 12, 1988 and he passed away on September 26, 1989. [Delbert was born on July 15, 1908.] Mae moved back to Adams in 1998 to the Northside Apartments and later to Cedar Court Apartments.

Mae was baptized and confirmed in Marshall Lutheran Church and was the organist there for 10 years. The family transferred to Little Cedar Lutheran Church in 1958.

Mae enjoyed all of her family especially having everyone come home. She also enjoyed traveling and had many good trips to Norway, Canada and around the U.S. She worked in several business places in Adams and also at Adams public schools.

Mae is survived by her children, Warren (Maryellen) Boe, Iowa City, Iowa, David (Lynn) Boe, Lino Lakes, Minn., Rebecca (Kenneth) Hartwig, Rose Creek, Minn.; grandchildren, Randall (Elizabeth) Boe, Erik (Anne) Boe, Darin Boe, Michael Boe, Christina Boe, Lisa Hartwig, Nathan Hartwig, Lindsey (Keith) Christianson; eight great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, John Hawkins, Marshall, Wis.; Delbert’s children, Gary (Kathy) Kasten, Faribault, Minn., Lorna (Allen) Taylor, Austin, David (Sharon) Kasten, Leroy, Minn., Keith (LaVonne) Kasten, Leroy, Dan (Susan) Kasten, Dallas, Texas; eight step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Everett and Delbert; daughter, Janice; one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery in Adams. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church for one hour before the service. Edward Lowell Bure

1928-2008

Edward Lowell Bure, 80, of Austin, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at his home.

He was born to Carl and Christine (Pederson) Bure in Glenville on March 17, 1928. He married Jeanette Mitchell on Dec. 3, 1955, in Albert Lea.

Ed was a truck driver for LCL Trucking, Markquardt, Becker and Mattson Trucking Companies and later owned and operated his own truck. He also drove school bus. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, he enjoyed motorcycling, boating, water skiing, fishing, Minnesota Twins, Vikings and eating at Arby’s.

Survivors include his son, Brad (Rhonda) Bure of Austin; daughter, Linda Bure of Austin; six grandchildren, Erika and Kacey Bure, Mitchell and Alex Holtzworth, Nicki and Sabrina Hartsfield; and two sisters, Leah Olson of Albert Lea and Eva Hulburt of Chino, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanette on Feb. 17, 2005; infant daughter, Melanie Kay; three brothers, Jasper, Al and Carl Bure; and two sisters, Ina Johnson and Amy Struyk.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Ron Barnett officiating.

Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery at a later date. At Mr. Bure’s request, his body was donated to the Mayo Anatomical Bequest Program.

Pearl W. Friis, 89, of Austin, died on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Presbyterian Homes Care Center in Spring Park, Minnesota.

Pearl was born on October 12, 1919 to Niels and Martha (Howard) Christensen in Wentworth, Wis. She graduated from Superior Wisconsin High School in 1937.

Before World War II, she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the Department of the Navy and met her future husband, Robert. After the war, she married Robert H. Friis in Austin, on March 31, 1946. After retiring from the Mower County sheriff’s Department, she remained active in her church, bowling and traveling with her family.

Pearl is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra (David) Nielsen, Wayzata, Minnesota; grandchildren: Audrey (David) Burger, Weston, Fla. and Scott (Kristin) Nielsen, Prior Lake, Minnesota and great-grandson, Noah Nielsen; brother, Howard Christensen, Duluth, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Alice Christensen, Wentworth, Wisconsin and Helen Christensen, Superior, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; sisters, Viola Schick, Elizabeth Christensen, Rose Nyman, Nora Smith and brother, Cassius Christensen.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Andrew M. Lindahl officiating. Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service. Interment will be in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

Stephen Crane Wright

1922-2008

Stephen Crane Wright, 86, died at Presbyterian Homes in Roseville, Minn., on Nov. 22, 2008 with his wife Shirley at his side.

He was born in Austin, on Oct. 12, 1922. Graduated AHS, 1940, and graduated from Austin Junior College in 1942. Stephen Married Shirley Armstrong on Feb., 1944. He was a veteran of World War II, as a 1st Lt. in the Army Air Corps, serving 16 months in the Pacific. He returned to attend Iowa State University, later being inducted into Tau Beta Pi (1946) and Pi Tau Sigma(1946).

After he graduated 1947 with degree in mechanical engineering, Stephen worked at Hormel in for 40+ years, designing refrigeration systems for Hormel plants nationwide. He retired in 1987. Stephen was a servant to the community: serving as a member of the Park and Recreation Board, Y's Men, R.O.A.R. and the American Legion. He was a church moderator and Sunday school teacher for many years. He was also a Former member (1967 to 1979) and President of the School Board of Austin Public Schools.

He is survived by loving wife of 64 years, Shirley, Roseville, Minn.; daughter, Janette (Paul) Jones, Ft. Collins, Colo.; sons, George (Grace), Charlie (Suzann) and Phil, all three of the Twin Cities; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Sylvia Gerbl, La Selva Beach, Calif.; brothers, William, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Frank, Northfield, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents Arthur and Florence Wright and son John Stephen Wright.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, at the First Congregational Church in Austin.

Irene Lucile Callahan

1906-2008

Irene Lucile Callahan, 102, of Austin, died on Dec. 3, 2008 at Our House Assisted Living.

Irene was born March 19, 1906 in Mankato, Minn., to Edward and Alvina (Neller) Nitzkowski. She was united in marriage to Joseph F. Callahan. Irene was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Michael (Judy) Callahan, Dayton, Nev.; daughter, Jean (Roger) Neilson, Anoka; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Bernadine Kvalheim, Mason City, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Callahan on April 3, 1953.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Mayer Funeral Home.

Sister M. Ethelreda (aka Bernice Catharine) Fisch

1905-2008

Sister M. Ethelreda Fisch, 102, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minnesota, died at Assisi Heights on Thursday, December 4, 2008.

Born Bernice Catherine Fisch on December 20, 1905 in Austin, Minnesota, Sister Ethelreda entered the Sisters of Saint Francis in 1924 from St. Augustine Parish, Austin, and made vows in 1926. Prepared with a diploma in music and piano from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, she taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Saint Francis in Minnesota, Ohio and South Dakota.

Sister Ethelreda was on the faculty of the School of Musical Art in Rochester, Minnesota for 16 years after which she taught for 34 years in the music department at the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minn. In 1997, the College of Saint Teresa Alumni Association presented her with the prestigious Citation Award.

During her years at the College Sister Ethelreda obtained a grant to study at the University of Ghana, Africa, which provided her with a rich intercultural experience. This event resulted in her adding a class on “The Music of Black America” at Saint Teresa’s.

A talented pianist, violinist and cellist, Sister Ethelreda gave frequent concerts at the College of Saint Teresa and in St. Paul and Chicago. She loved her work, both in classroom and private instruction. Her students described her as an exceptional teacher who expected exceptional results. She was an enthusiastic, giving teacher who had a warm personality and delightful sense of humor. Sister Ethelreda retired to Assisi Heights in 1989.

She is survived by nieces and a nephew as well as the members of her religious community with whom she shared life for 84 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, in Rochester. Friends may call at Assisi Heights for the Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, and before the time of the service on December 10.

Alice Ida (nee Laabs) Schmidt

1918-2008

Alice Ida Schmidt, 90, of Austin, died on Dec. 3, 2008 at Austin Medical Center after suffering a stroke on Nov. 26, 2008.

She was born February 19, 1918 to Reinhold and Martha (Mienke) Laabs in Fenton, Iowa where she grew up. A Fenton High School Valedictorian in the graduating class of 1935.

Alice married Walter Schmidt on Sept. 29, 1935 in Mallard, Iowa. They moved to Minnesota, making their home in Austin in 1942. Walter passed away in 1971. Alice moved to St. Mark’s Apartments in 2005.

A member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, she liked to garden, watch songbirds, and she loved to work crossword puzzles.

Survivors include four sons, Delmar (Barbara Griffin) Schmidt, Altus, Okla., Ray (Gail) Schmidt, LeRoy Schmidt, Roger (Sharyl Van’tHul) Schmidt, all of Austin; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Wolf, Bancroft, Iowa; special friends, Irene and Mel Eichstadt, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; one grandson; one granddaughter; three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Theodore Barthels officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Florence (nee Severson) Monahan

1920-2008

Florence Monahan, 88, of Rochester, Minn., died on Dec. 3, 2008 at Samaritan Bethany Heights in Rochester.

Florence Severson was born on Feb. 27, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minn. She grew up in Grand Meadow, Minn. and attended Grand Meadow High School.

On Feb. 17, 1937 in Grand Meadow, she was married to Keith E. Monahan. Following their marriage the couple lived in San Diego, Calif., where Mr. Monahan was employed as a welder repairing and manufacturing airplanes. At the end of World War II they returned to Minnesota and lived in Austin and Minneapolis before moving to rural Stewartville in 1968. Mr. Monahan was employed as a welder doing ship work as well as bridge construction.

Mrs. Monahan was a homemaker and was also employed as a housekeeper and a daycare provider for numerous families in the Rochester area. Mr. Monahan died on on Oct. 2, 1972 and she moved to her own home in Rochester. Recently she had lived at Plummer Place in Rochester. She was a past member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. She enjoyed entertaining, cooking and baking for the holidays, fishing, garage sales and re-sales, reading, cards and games as well as time spent with friends and family.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Kenneth) Highet, Austin; two sons, Ronald (Nancy), Rochester, David (Glenda), Columbus, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister and three brothers.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville with the Reverend John Heille officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville is handling the arrangements.

Jane Frances (nee Srnec) Stephenson

1936-2008

Jane Frances (Srnec) Stephenson, 72, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on December 3, 2008 in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

Jane was born on July 8, 1936 in Winona to William and Eva (Schweitzer) Srnec. On Nov. 8, 1957 she was united in marriage to Stanley Stephenson in Winona. He preceded her in death on August 27, 2008.

Jane enjoyed working at the family owned Cookie Jar, spending time with the grandkids, gardening, listening to Elvis Presley, reading and knitting. Jane was an LPN, homemaker and a baker. Survivors include her six children, Julie Stephenson, Austin, Dennis Stephenson (Ann Tubbs), Austin, Karen Stephenson, Austin, Willy Stephenson (Jean Blaser), Austin, Janice Maxfield (Joel), Sparta, Wis., Janine Nordland (Brian), Owatonna; seven grandchildren, Adam Stephenson, Caitlin Stephenson, Joseph Stephenson, Jacob Nordland, Brynn Nordland, Erik Stephenson, Andy Maxfield; three brothers, Bob Srnec, Winona, Jim Srnec (Judy), Lake City, Joe Srnec, St. Louis, Missouri.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, William and Eva Srnec; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Louina Stephenson; brother, John Srnec; granddaughter, Cassandra Nordland.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father John Traufler officiating. The family will greet friends a half-hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home and also at a luncheon in the family room at St. Edward's Catholic Church following the service.

The honorary casket bearers will be Jacob Nordland, Erik Stephenson and Andy Maxfield. The casket bearers will be Dennis Stephenson, Willy Stephenson, Joel Maxfield, Brian Nordland, Adam Stephenson and Joe Stephenson.
