Maurice Allen Iten, age 7, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on October 20, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

Maurice was born February 28, 2001 in Austin. He spent time with his grandpa Berg, attending church, and visiting his grandma and grandpa Iten at the farm. Maurice loved chocolate milk and chocolate chip cookies. If he could be any character he would be Sponge Bob Square Pants. His favorite super hero is Spiderman. Maurice was a loving brother, son, grandson, nephew, cousin, student, friend and playmate.

Maurice traveled to Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri on family vacations. He took great pride in being a big brother and never forgetting to include his sidekick in any of his adventures. Maurice and his brother, Parker gave his parents great joy and many gray hairs. Maurice had a smile and a giggle that could be infectious.

Maurice may not be visible for those that love him to hug or kiss him, but his smile and giggle will be heard for years to come. We Love You.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 24, 2008 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 7 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery south of Austin.

The honorary casket bearers will be Kelly, Stephanie, Katie, Richard, Ashley, Katrina, Danny, Joshuah, Ryle, Ryan, Aubrey, Ashley, Samantha, Juanita, Dawn and Cortez. Daniel Robert Evans, age 45, died on October 20, 2008. He liked musical toys, fair rides, bouncing balls, strings and straws. He was active in community events and enjoyed spending time with his housemates. He was employed by Turtle Creek Industries.

He is survived by his sisters, Virginia (David) Bebee, Wasilla, Arkansas, Stephanie (Dana) Richardson, Butler, Pennsylvania, Darla Wilder, Punta Gorda, Florida, Carla Kahoun, Southampton, New Jersey; and by a brother, Joe Adcock, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Evelyn.

Mabel Virginia (Schmidt) Flanders passed away to her heavenly rest at Colonial Hospital, Rochester, Mn. on July 23, 1948 at the age of 47 years.

She was born on April 11, 1901 in Appleton, Mn. On May 4, 1920 she was united in marriage to Leslie M. Flanders at Webster S.D. To this union were born eight children. She was a loving mother, loved by her family and her friends.

Those surviving are her husband, eight children: Madalyn (Roy) Huffman, Corrine (Floyd) Ziegler, Isabel, Elders, Alvin, Geraldine, Clayton, Marly. Four grandchildren. One sister: Mrs. E.S. Carpenter, Longville, Mn.

Six brothers: Carl of Hancock Mn, Wesley of Aberdeen S.D., Elmer of Clark S.D., Edward of Webster S.D., Herschel of International Falls, Mn., and Hormer of Crafton, Nebraska.

Funeral services were held at the Mayer Funeral Home on July 26, 1948 at 1:30 p.m. with Neal Kuyper officiating. Burial took place at Oakwood Cemetry.

Leslie M. Flanders was born August 17, 1898 in Webster South Dakota. The son of Murdock and Hatti (Rich) Flanders. He attended Webster Public Schools.

In 1920 he married Mabel Schmidt in Webster. For the last 25 years he resided at 2114 3rd Ave. NE. He was a retired Geo. A. Hormel & Co. worker and belonged to the Faternal Order of Eagles.

Mr. Flanders passed away at his home on Feb. 10, 1970 at the age of 71.

Funeral services were held Feb. 13 at the First United Methodist Church, Rev. A.C. Long officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery with the Mayer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Roy (Madalyn) Huffman, Austin, Mrs. Floyd (Corrine) Ziegler, Southgate, California, Mrs Robert (Geraldine) Kolch, Brookfield, Wis.; four sons Elders Flanders, Austin, Alvin Flanders, Fridley, Mn., Clayton Flanders and Marly Flanders, Austin. Clayton H. Flanders, 65, of Austin, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born June 16, 1937, in Rose Creek, to Leslie and Mable (Schmidt) Flanders.

On March 20, 1960, he married Patricia Steinbrink in Austin.

Clayton worked as a car mechanic in Austin and was the owner of Flanders DX Station and a Gulf Station. Later he was employed at Weyerhaeuser Company in the mechanical department. He enjoyed trout fishing, deer hunting, stock car racing, snowmobiling and camping. More recently he enjoyed the outdoors and nature at Hickory Lake and attended horse shows and 4-H horse training with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Flanders, Austin; daughters, Lisa (Jay) Pudenz, Rose Creek; Lois (Gary) Wiedeman, Adams; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Alvin (Janet) Flanders, Fridley; Marly (Cheryl) Flanders, Austin; sisters, Corrine Ziegler, Whittier, Calif.; Geraldine (Bob) Kolch, Brookfield, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Elders L. "Slim" Flanders, 71, of Austin, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Adams Healthcare Center.

He was born April 21, 1930, in Webster, S.D. to Leslie and Mable (Schmidt) Flanders. He served in the United States Army in Korea from 1950 to 1953.

On Aug. 8, 1953, he married Doris Schmidt in Milwaukee, Wis.

He loved fishing, camping, hunting and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Elias Henry “Hank” Seira, age 80, of Bismarck, North Dakota, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Oct. 25, 2008, at his home, under the care of Hospice, with his loving wife at his side.

Hank was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Otto and Ida Bakkila Seira. He began his swimming career at age 12. He shattered many records, one of which lasted for 20 years. In his junior year, coach took Hank to the national championship in Philadelphia, where he won two gold medals, the only multiple event winner that year. He was named an All-American. He enlisted in the army in 1946, and served in the Occupation Forces in Japan. The Army selected Hank and four other soldiers to begin the Army Olympic swimming training program. He shattered two records in Yokohama, at the All East Command Swim.

He was discharged from the Army in March 1948. He was recruited by several colleges for his swimming abilities. He entered Yale University in 1948, and swam with the Yale swim team, graduating in 1952. His career as a civil engineer took him around the world, the subway system in Washington D.C., a tunnel under the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, the Alaskan pipeline, copper mines in Chile, a coal gasification plant in South Africa and the atomic test site in Nevada.

In retirement, he taught classes in surveying to former GI’s looking for new careers and also volunteered his time doing income tax preps for seniors. In 1987, he was inducted into the Austin High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He married his former Austin High School classmate Marilyn Holm Monson, the love of his life, on March 26, 2001, and they began their life together as they were meant to be 50 years earlier. Marilyn’s family welcomed Hank as one of their own.

Always anxious to learn, he worked daily cross-word puzzles, Sudoku, and loved the History Channel. He excelled at card games and especially loved duplicate bridge. He was a member of Operating Engineers, Elks, and Rotary. Rotary was an important part of his life, and he was honored to become a Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow.

He was a kind, generous, and thoughtful man with a big warm smile for everyone he met. We will dearly miss him.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Seira; daughters, Karen Monson, Duluth, Minn. and Kathryn (Brian) Wood, Lakewood, Colo.; sons, Brian (Cheryl) Monson, Boise, Idaho and Brad Monson, Strasburg, N.D.; grandchildren, Joe (Jess) Slag, Charlie Slag, Kristi (Brandon) Lowder, Reed Monson, Kyle Monson and Stephanie Wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers; one sister and 6 nieces and nephews. Per Hank’s wish, his body was donated to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. Doris Marie Wilson, age 85, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on October 24, 2008 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

She was born on April 9, 1923, in Austin to Basil and Bertha Fae (Tanner) Barrows. She grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. On Jan. 1, 1942, she married Donald E. Wilson in Austin. They lived in Austin all their lives, abd both worked and retired from Hormel. Don died in 1998. Doris was a member of Crane Community Chapel. She enjoyed playing cards, ceramics and being with all her friends and family. She collected angels, which were an inspiration to her life. It was said that she never met a stranger, and if she did, they weren't a stranger for long.

Survivors include her son, Dr. Tom (Melodie) Wilson; brother, Max (Ruth) Barrows, Iowa; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Viola Miller, Rochester; brother-in-law, Wilbur (Mary) Wilson, Owatonna; 36 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews and all her beloved friends.

A memorial service will be held at Crane Community Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1:30 p.m.

David Rasmussen, 60, of Machesney Park, Ill. died Oct. 26, 2008 in Rockford Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 6, 1948 in Austin, the son of Robert A. and Evelyn Rasmussen. Proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. David retired in 1998 from Chrysler after 31 years of employment. His passions in life were his Harleys and gardening.

Survivors include wife, Yvonne “Bonnie” Rasmussen; children, Erin (Charles) Emerson, Concord, N.C., Joyce (Thomas) Flynn, Roscoe, Danny (Gina) Morris, Rockford, Ill.; brothers, Jeff Rasmussen, Maple Grove, Minn. and Larry Rasmussen, Austin; nephew, Chris Rasmussen; grandchildren, Brittany (Jake) Petry, Rachal Woody, Joshua Woody; great-grandchildren, Eathen and Landen.

He was preceded by his parents and brother, Robert D. Rasmussen.

Maurine Evelyn Jan, age 97, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on October 24, 2008, at the Austin Medical Center in Austin.

She was born July 7, 1911, in Odebolt, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Eva (Tasland) Domino. On Nov. 25, 1930, she was united in marriage to Louis V. Jan at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Austin where they raised their four sons, Lloyd, Kenneth, Loel and Gerald. In 1963, they adopted a grandson, Michael Loren Jan. Louis died on Jan. 24, 2004.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth (Patricia) Jan, Livermore, Colo., Gerald (Sharon) Jan, Dallas, Texas and Michael (Susan) Jan, Kansas City, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three daughters-in-laws, Shirley R. Jan, Rice Lake, Wis., Shirley M. Jan, Arnold, Maryland and Minh Smith of Savannah, Ga. and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Lloyd and Loel; a granddaughter, Kathy Rae Jan; three brothers, Victor Domino, Glenn Domino and Dale “Rex” Domino and a sister, Lola.

At Maurine’s request her body has been donated to Anatomical Bequest Program at Mayo. No services will be held. Interment will be at a future date in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. The Worlein Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Atlanta Oliver, age 101, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on October 28, 2008, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home. Atlanta Myrtella Thronson was born November 27, 1906 in Dodge County, Minnesota to Theodore and Anna (Gilbertson) Thronson.

She married Clarence Clark in 1933. Clarence died in 1958. Atlanta moved to Austin in 1953 and worked at Wallace’s from 1953 until 1964. During this time she met Charles “Red” Oliver and they were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa in 1964. Charles died in 1980. Atlanta continued to make her home in Austin, where she was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and active in her Circle there. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Center, Austin Garden Club and the Degree of Honor. Atlanta enjoyed taking care of her flowers and gardening, fishing, cooking and entertaining company.

She is survived by daughter-in-law, Joanne Clark, Bloomington; two grandsons, Michael (Julie) Clark, Eden Prairie; Bruce (Laurie) Clark, Excelsior; five great-grandchildren, Justin Clark, Jenna Clark, Ryan Clark, Adam Clark, Jack Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Anna Thronson; first husband, Clarence; second husband, Charles; son, Aaron Clark; granddaughter, Cathy Clark; brothers, Leonard, Tilford, Selmer, Howard; sister, Blanche.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Kristi Koppel officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements. The family prefers memorials to St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Engelberta M. "Birdie" Dunlop, 102, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on October 26, 2008 at Sacred Heart Care Center where she was a resident.

Birdie was born on August 13, 1906 in Canby, Minnesota to Frank and Barbara (Retterath) Winkels and was raised on a farm until coming to Austin in 1924. She worked at the Fox Hotel for several years until going to Rochester to work for the Rochester Country Club.

On May 30, 1931 she was united in marriage to Hugh Dunlop in Rochester, Minn. The couple then moved to Austin where she and her husband raised their eight children.

Birdie was a devoted housewife and a long standing member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She enjoyed Bingo and was tagged "Bingo Birdie." She also enjoyed playing cards with her many friends and going to Diamond Jo's. Birdie was known for her embroidered dish towels and table cloths for all of the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved to bake pies, cookies and cakes.

Survivors include her eight children, Barbara (John) Felten, Rose Creek, Marjorie Petersen, Austin, Jack (Marlys) Dunlop, Austin, Nancy (Cliff) Reed, Austin, Jim Dunlop (Dee Wilmot), Austin, Tom (Lisa) Dunlop, Austin, Bob (Jeanette) Dunlop, Salado, Texas, Debbie (Clarence) Horejsi, Owatonna; 44 grandchildren; 99 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ollie Hanson, Canby; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh on May 20, 1974; parents, Frank and Barbara Winkels; nine sisters and brothers; two sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; a great-grandson.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. and also from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Paul Allen Grosland, age 67, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester on Oct. 29, 2008.

He was born April 10, 1941 in Northwood, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Inah (Hanson) Grosland. Baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, Paul attended 13 years of school on the same block in Northwood, graduating with the class of 1959. He attended Mason City Junior College in Mason City, Iowa before moving to Minnesota where he attend Mankato State College and served three years in the National Guard. On Aug. 26, 1961 he was united in marriage to Ruth Hempen at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. They made their home in Cedar Falls where Paul earned his BA degree in elementary education at State College of Iowa in 1963.

He taught sixth grade for nine years in Fertile and Mason City, Iowa and Albert Lea. He got his master’s degree in audio visual library from Mankato State College in 1971. He was a school librarian in Fort Dodge, Northwood and at the Area Education Agency in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Moving back to Minnesota, he was the district media director for Austin Public Schools for 23 years, retiring in 1999. Paul spent 53 years of his life going to school. After retirement from the school system, he worked at Hormel Foods Corp. in aircraft cleaning for seven years. He enjoyed photography and his iMac computer, spending time with his family, traveling and doing day trips. Paul and Ruth went on an Alaskan cruise and also to Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, Austin; son, Dan Grosland, Inver Grove Heights; daughter, Michelle (David) Phillips, Faribault; granddaughter, Julia Phillips, Faribault; brothers: Virgil Grosland, Plymouth, David (Diane) Grosland, Fort Dodge, Iowa; sisters: Mavis (Richard) Nelson, Albert Lea, Kerma Hammer, North Carolina; JoAnn (James) Villa, Lake Mills, Iowa; sister-in-law, Talora “Tillie” Grosland, Albert Lea.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Oscar and Inah Grosland; brother, LaVon Grosland and a niece, Marilyn Hillman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment is at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa.

Wilbur W. Wilson, 83, of Owatonna, Minnesota, died on Oct. 28, 2008 at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna. Wilbur donated his body to Mayo Clinic Anatomical Bequest program for medical research.

Wilbur was born November 7, 1924 in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, the son of James and Nell (Woodard) Wilson. Wilbur graduated from Austin High School in 1942. Following high school, he enlisted in the Marines Corps. and served during World War II with the 2nd Marine Division on Tarawa, Saipan, Okinawa, Tinian and Japan.

On May 15, 1948 Wilbur was united in marriage to Mary E. Chrz at Queen of Angels Church in Austin. Wilbur began his employment with the George A. Hormel Co. in Austin and served as a livestock buyer at various stations. Wilbur was transferred to the Owatonna livestock station in 1968 and continued to work with the company until his retirement in 1986.

Wilbur was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Toys for Tots, the Steele County Historical Society, the American Legion and Western Fraternal Life (ZCBJ). He was also a member of the National Marines 2nd Division and the state chapter of the Marines 2nd Division. Wilbur enjoyed the outdoors, golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening and the Minnesota Vikings.

Willy was a hard working, proud Marine with a selfless giving nature and a strong dedication to his family. He is survived by his loving wife Mary of 60 years; their children: Stephen (Julie), Austin, Mary Jo (Mike), Owatonna, Patrick, Winona, Minn., Mark, Medford, Ann, Minnetonka, Minn., Tom (Dee Dee), Glennallen, Ark. and Gary (Jan) of Murdock, Minn.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Miller; sister-in-law, Darlene Wilson, and many nieces and nephews.

Wilbur is preceded in death by his parents: James and Nell; five brothers and five sisters. An informal Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held Sunday Nov. 2, 2008 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Brick-Meger Funeral Home in Owatonna, Minn. with a brief prayer service at 3 p.m. followed by military honors rendered by the Steele County Funeral Unit.

Avon Karyl Mason, age 93, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on October 29, 2008 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Avon was born June 15, 1915 in LeRoy to Frank and Beatrice (Sampson) Mason. They later moved to Red Wing, Minn., where he lived until joining the Civil Conservation Corps. when he was 16. After leaving the CCC, he moved to Austin where he met his wife, Gladys Olmstead. They were married on Feb. 6, 1938 in Osage, Iowa. Avon and Gladys were married for almost 63 years, until her death on Jan. 14, 2001. Avon and Gladys had five children. The couple enjoyed camping with their Airstream trailer and the many friends they met along the way. They were members of the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan and traveled the United States. They were also members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church for many years.

In later years, Avon loved listening to music, going for rides, going out to eat and having his family around him. He worked for the George A. Hormel Co. for 30 years and he was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include three children: Russell Mason, Austin, Karyl (Bob) Brabbit, Faribault, Kenneth (Phyllis) Mason, Hastings; five granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a son, Allen; daughter, Sandra; parents, Frank and Beatrice; one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Sunday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91.

Delmont Raymond Thoe, age 76, died at Bonnell Good Samaritan Care Center in Greeley, Colorado on October 25, 2008.

Delmont was born Sept. 21, 1932, the son of Knut and Ella (Wilson) Thoe in Hayfield, Minnesota. Delmont graduated from Hayfield High School and after high school he did carpentry work in the area. He moved to Colorado, where he did carpentry work and later was owner and operator of a bar and lounge in Platteville, Colo. Delmont served four years in the Air Force during the Korean War. Delmont enjoyed sports and playing cards.

Delmont is survived by four sisters: Janice (John) Augustin, Austin, Blanche Haugland, Austin, Betty Hayes, Chino Hills, Calif. and Esther Thoe, in California; brother, Sterling Thoe, Austin; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 at the church. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 at Evanger Lutheran Church in rural Sargeant, Mower county, Minnesota, with the Reverend Lissa Kahl officiating. Interment will be in Evanger Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Post No. 330. The family wishes memorials to Evanger Lutheran Church. Harold R. Burroughs, age 93, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died on October 30, 2008 in LaGrange, Kentucky.

Harold was born on June 19, 1915 in Faribault, Minnesota to Glen and Mary Burroughs. He moved to Austin at an early age, grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in 1934. Harold worked a few years for Griggs Cooper, then Hormel Foods and retired after 36 years.

Harold served in World War II and spent three and a half years overseas under Patton's 3rd Army. He was a member of the 4th Armored Division in combat for five months. As an instructor of French troops he was awarded the French Alpine Hunting Horn and the French Croix Grau. His other decorations include the Bronze Star and Cluster, the Purple Heart with Cluster, ETO Ribbons, plus three major battle stars. Harold stayed in the Reserve following the war and rose to the rank of lieutanent colonel. He retired in 1976.

On September 27, 1942 he was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Heimsness in Rossville, Ga. They had one son, Richard Owen Burroughs. In 1999 Harold moved to Louisville, Ky. where he lived with his son and daughter-in-law. He lived there until his death.

Harold was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Elks. He also belonged to an Army Reserve Unit, the Lions Club and was a member of the Legion Drum Corps. He served on the Austin Library Board, the Park and Recreation Board and the Austin Country Club.

Survivors include his son, Richard (Barbara) Burroughs, Louisville, Ky.; two granddaughters: Mary Beth, Sumter, S.C., Angie, Chicago, Ill.; two step-grandchildren: Robert Richard, Mission, Kan., Chris Clark, Sacramento, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on May 3, 1998; parents; brother, William; sister, Hazel; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Knoble, Mr. and Mrs. James O. Smith, Wilbur and Anne Heimsness, Ruth Knoble, Catherine Burroughs, Mr. and Mrs. George Dugan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday and one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Monday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91. Pauline J. Vala, 93, of Charles City, Iowa, died on Thursday, November 9, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Pauline Jonie Vala was born August 7, 1913, the daughter of Edwald and Marie (Marzen) Nikolas in Grand Meadow, Mower county, Minnesota. She graduated from Marble Rock High School (Marble Rock, Floyd county, Iowa) in 1932 and was the valedictorian of her class.

On November 28, 1935 she was united in marriage to Charles Vala at Roseville. Pauline was a farm wife and was employed at Dean Jewelers for a period of time. Charles and Pauline farmed near Oakwood for many years until retirement and moving to Charles City.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Circle, and the Women’s Club. Her interest included playing cards, flowers, gardening, cooking, canning, and spending time with her family. Pauline will always be remembered as a hard worker and a true farm wife.

Living family members include two grandchildren, Kurt Vala of Northfield, N.H., and Sheila (Lundy) Anderson of Fairfield; two great grandchildren, Spencer Vala and Ellie Anderson; two sisters, Betty (Russell) Ewoldt of Plymouth, Minn., Francys Klages of Charles City; two brothers, Eugene Nikolas of Osage and Earl (Jeanette) Nikolas of Greene; and a daughter-in-law, Pam Vala of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Reverend Ralph Vala and Gary Vala; four brothers, Edward Nikolas, Clair Nikolas, Leo Nikolas, and Donald Nikolas.

Charles Christian Armstrong was born in Albin Township, June 24, 1901, the son of William and Alma Elandson Armstrong. He attended rural schools near Hanska, Minn. where his parents farmed, and also attended high school at Sleepy Eye, Minn. The past 36 years he made his home in Austin and the past 22 years resided at 1105 2nd Ave. SW.

On June 10, 1930, he was united in marriage with Miss Agnes Olga Paulson at Hanska. This union was blessed with three children: a daughter and two sons.

Mr. Armstrng was a veteran oil and gasoline businessman in Austin, serving as a peroleum bulk agent, distributor and consignee. At the time of his death, he was a partner with his son-in-law, Otto Volkert, in the Armstrong Skelly Service Station & Disbributors.

Always active in the affairs of the community, Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Salvation Army Board, the York Rite, Masonic Bodies, Fidelity Lodge No. 39, AF&AM, Austin Chapter No. 14, Royal Arch Masons, St. Bernard Commandery No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, Austin Council No. 7, Osman Temple of the Shrine, the Scottish Rite, Winona Consistory, Osman and Austin Oriental Bands, Unity Chaper No. 29, OES, the BPO Elks, Cedar Valley Conservation Club, Isaak Walton League and the United Commercial Travelers. He was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Armstrong passed away at St. Olaf Hospital on the morning of May 19 after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley Hanks and Rev. Axel Long officiating. Interment was at Grandview Memorial Gardens with John G. Tate, Franklin King, Alvin Gerhart, William Peterson, Eugene Orr and Reuben Thompson serving as bearers. Honorary bearers were Earle Rogers, Jerry Thatcher, Philip Hovind, Don Ames, Adolph Schaal, Blaine Knutson and Ralph Moore.

Masonic rites were held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Jordan Mortuary Chapel with Fidelity Lodge No. 39, AF&AM in charge.

Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife, Agnes; a daughter, Mrs. Otto Volkert (Betty); two sons, Charles A. Armstrong, International Falls, and Robert L. Armstrong, Stockton, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Millard Lee (Goldie), Sibley, Iowa, Mrs. Clifford Lee (Violet), Mrs. Carl Johnson (Evelyn), Hanska; three brothres, Jesse Armstrong, Hanska, Melvin Armstrong, New Ulm, George Armstrong, Sylmar, Calif; many nieces and nephews."

Died, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. L. Henderson, in South St. Paul, Thursday morning, Oct. 4, 1900, Mrs. Elizabeth Porter, aged 68 years. Elizabeth Whitcomb was born in Cataraugus county, N.Y., Aug. 3, 1832, was married to A. J. Porter in Wisconsin in 1849, and came to LeRoy in 1857.

The husband A. J. Porter, and three children, Franklin, who died in infancy, A. E. Porter and Mrs. J. C. House, preceded her. Two children are left to feel the desolation that only those can realize who mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother: W. K. Porter, of the firm of Porter & Young of LeRoy, and Mrs. F. L. Henderson of South St. Paul. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Albert Allen of Chico, Cal., and Mrs. Dr. S. J. Bacon of Kansas, and one brother, E. A. Whitcomb of LeRoy.

The remains were brought to LeRoy Friday and funeral services were held at the residence Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Silke. The casket was bordered with smilax and hothouse flowers in great profusion attesting the loving kindness of the many friends who will sadly miss her. The beautiful burial services of the O. E. S., of which she was a member, were conducted at the cemetery.

Shirley Jerelene Gabrielson, 80, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on November 5, 2008, at St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Blue Earth.

She was born June 12, 1928 to Ernest and Mabel (Montgomery) Storry in Austin. After attending Whittier School and graduating from Austin High School in 1946, Shirley was a bookkeeper. She married Gordy Gabrielson on June 11, 1950 at First United Methodist Church in Austin. They raised three children. A homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church, Shirley bowled on the church league for 25 years. She also enjoyed crafts, sewing and spending time with her friends. She became a resident of St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Blue Earth in 2004.

Survivors include two sons, Dale (Diane) Gabrielson, Sartell, Gary (Rhonda) Gabrielson, Austin; daughter, Janelle Gabrielson, Austin; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Jenny) Gabrielson, Matthew (Korina) Gabrielson, Amanda (Justin) Draeger, Melanie, Carissa, Brittney and Chelsea Gabrielson; two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Logan Gabrielson; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Storry, Woodbury; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph “Gordy” Gabrielson; brother, Lyle Storry.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Patricia Toschak officiating. Richard Harry Anderson, age 87, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on November 3, 2008 at his home.

He was born on February 21, 1921 in Austin, to Leonard and Mary (Yaroshek) Anderson. He attended Austin Public Schools and served in the Air Force from Oct. 15, 1942 thru Oct. 23, 1945. He was a staff sergeant and Instrument Specialist. He was stationed in Utah, Illinois, Texas, Arizona, Iowa and Kansas. From Feb. 27, 1944 thru March 31, 1945, he was stationed in Bombay, India.

During his enlistment he served under Brig. General Wolf and General LaMay. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Air Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Asiatic Ribbon, 7 Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a retired employee of the Hormel Foods Corporation. Richard was married to Faye Tucker LeBarron on Sept. 30, 1966 in Owatonna, Minn. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and had served as treasurer of the Cedar River Archery Club and was a past president of the Cedar Valley Conservation Club.

Richard was a "rock hound" and enjoyed collecting stamps, coins and fossils. He also enjoyed archery, hunting and fishing.

Richard is survived by his wife, Faye Anderson, Austin; children, Cheryl Lynn Sund and Bob Borg, Austin, Gene Richard Anderson, Rochester, Minn.; step-children, Sandra and Tom Hentges, Austin, Dennis and Paulette LeBarron, Austin; Lynda and David Majerus, Austin; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Keith and Clarice Anderson, N.H., Bernard Anderson, Austin; sister, Donna Cochran, Albert Lea, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald and Robert and a twin brother in infancy.

William James Sathre, age 78, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Nov. 3, 2008 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

He was born Oct. 22, 1930 in Austin, to Johnnie and Bertha (Benson) Sathre. William graduated from Austin High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

William married Morna Miner on Nov. 19, 1955, in Sargeant, Mower county, Minnesota. William owned and operated several businesses, including a grocery store and a carpet cleaning service. William and Morna also received the WCCO Good Neighbor Award. In his spare time, William loved to play cards, especially cribbage.

Harlan O. Carlson, Sr., 86 of Austin, formerly of Blooming Prairie, died at Austin Medical Center on Nov. 7, 2008. He was born March 29, 1922 to Adry and Esther (Nordstrom) Carlson in Watertown, Minnesota where he grew up and graduated from high school. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Harlan worked as a boiler man at the Blooming Prairie Creamery.

He married Marilyn Riffe on May 15, 1947 in Watertown. Later he was employed by AMPI. Harlan and Marilyn moved to Austin in 1978. A boilerman at St. Olaf Hospital, he retired in April of 1987. He enjoyed traveling and tinkering on small engines and appliances.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Carlson and Harlan O. Carlson, Jr., Austin; daughter, Carolyn Lopez, Annapolis, Md.; two grandchildren, Taylor (Mark) Bliese and Christian Carlson, Austin; great-granddaughter, Claire Bliese; sister, Ardelle Carlson, Waconia; brother-in-law, Leonard Anderson, Hibbing; sister-in-law, Faye Carlson, Waconia; brother-in-law, John (Deanne) Riffe, Paynesville and other relatives and friends.

Kenneth Frances Mudra, 80, of Glenville, Minnesota died on Sunday morning, November 9, 2008, at his home.

He was born on January 17, 1928, to Alfred Emil and Marie Louise (Hansen) Mudra in Austin. Raised on the Mudra family farm, Kenneth attended a rural London elementary school and graduated from Lyle High School in 1945. He lived and worked on the home farm his entire life with the exception of his military service.

On January 23, 1954, Kenneth married Marjorie Ann Bringsjord at First United Methodist Church in Austin. He served his country honorably in the Army from November, 1954 until August of 1956. After his discharge, he became a lifetime member of the Lyle American Legion. Kenneth loved his home and firmly believed it was important to help family and community. For many years he volunteered his time to the London Fire Department. He also served on the London Cemetery Board, participated in London Conservation Club and was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Myrtle. He was always proud of his children and grandchildren and attended many school sports games, band concerts and music recitals as work on the farm permitted.

Survivors include his wife, Marge of Glenville; a son, Alfred Anthony "Tony" (Denice) Mudra of Glenville; a daughter, Ann Marie (Gary) Korbel of Prior Lake; six grandchildren, Jennifer Mudra, Laura (Ryang) Kim, Louise Mudra, John Mudra, Helen Korbel and Kendra Korbel; and sister-in-law, Arlene Hueman. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Mavis and a brother-in-law, James Hueman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle with the Revs. Ronald Myers and Lydia Mittag officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 8 Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. David Pehrson, Sr., 57, formerly of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly in Blytheville, Arkansas on November 5, 2008. He was the son of Helen L. Mitchell of South Yarmouth and the late Warren E. Pehrson.

He graduated from Reading Memorial High School in Reading, Mass., in 1969, and from Northeastern University in 1975 with a degree in pharmacy. He was an instructor in the Northeastern College of Pharmacy from 1975 to 1976.

He was married to Cheryl Hodsdon Pehrson from 1972 to 1998. They raised three children: David, Jr., Kristina, and Erik. They lived in Reading and Londonderry, N.H., and owned two drug stores: Londonderry Pharmacy and The Apothecary in Windham, N.H. He was elected to the Reading (Mass.) Board of Health, serving as its director until 1985. He also coached Pop Warner football from 1986 to 1989.

They moved to Austin in 1993. He married Debora Kimball Pehrson in 1999. They lived in Austin for six years and moved to West Yarmouth in 2004, delighted to be back in their native New England.

Besides his passion for pharmacy, Dave's hobbies included gardening, woodworking, football and cooking for his family. He enjoyed a lifelong love of the ocean and New England lakes and spent many happy hours on Lake Ossipee with his family on his boat. Dave was employed as a registered pharmacist for 33 years until he moved to Arkansas in May, 2008, where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Debora, West Yarmouth; two sons: David W. Pehrson, Jr., Chatham., Erik C. Pehrson, Austin; daughter, Kristina Grace Reuss, Austin; three stepdaughters; Kim Dohrman, St. Petersburg, Fla., Allison Kimball, Decorah, Iowa, Katie Kimball, Pahoa, Hawaii; sister, Susan L. Dureault, Westford, Mass.; four grandchildren: Noah Pehrson, Emma Reuss, Kayla Reuss and Lincoln Rockers all of Austin; niece, Heather L. Jay V. Simonson, age 89, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Our House Memory Care.

He was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Hartland, to Joseph and Clara Simonson. He served as a cook in World War II, stationed throughout Africa and Italy. Jay married Olive Hanson on May 12, 1946, in Hayward. Jay owned and operated Simonson Decorating in Austin for many years. Jay enjoyed retirement in Yuma, Ariz., and summers in Minnesota. He was a member of the American Legion, Moose, Elks, Eagles, and VFW. He enjoyed cooking, playing cards, and camping with his family in his motor home. Jay especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Forbes officiating. Military honors will be by Austin Post #91, American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post 1216 VFW. Visitation will be at Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Jay is survived by his wife of 62 years: Olive Simonson, Austin; children: Barry (Earlene) Simonson, Austin, Sharon (James) Mead, Park Rapids, Barbara (Alan) Cook, Glenville, Shirley (James) Johnson, Blooming Prairie, and Bradley (Lisa) Simonson, Owatonna; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sister Amelia Bakke, Albert Lea; and nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Leland Nelson, age 88, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Adams Health Care Center, Adams.

Kenneth was born March 9, 1920 in Freeborn County, Minnesota, to Jesse and Evelyn (Nagel) Nelson. He graduated from high school and attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul.

Kenneth was married to June L. Otto on Dec. 28, 1944 at the Dexter United Methodist Church. They resided in the Adams area where he farmed until his retirement.

Kenneth was a member of the Little Cedar Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council. He has also served on the Adams School Board and was a member of the Mower County Pork Producers, the Adams Lions Club and the Sons of Norway.

He enjoyed traveling, dancing, boating and golf as well as he daily visits "downtown" and spending time with friends. But most of all he enjoyed he family.

Kenneth is survived by his wife: June L. Nelson, Adams; son: Conrad (Diane) Nelson, Knoxville, Iowa; daughters: Marna (Darren) Hansen, Des Moines, Iowa, Janine (Scott) Hayden, Pine Island, Minn.; granddaughter: Amber Lohman; grandsons: Ryan Schacht, Zachary Hansen, Derek Nelson, Grant Nelson, Cale Nelson; great grandchildren: Kelsey, Bailey and Cody sister-in-law: Dorothy Nelson, Austin.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Nelson; sister, Mavis Nelson, and great-granddaughter, Anna Lynn Lohman.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Reverend Shari Mason officiating. Interment will be at the Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be at Little Cedar Lutheran Church on Friday from noon until the time of the service.

Organist will be Pat Hinz. Casketbearers will be Amber Lohman, Ryan Schacht, Zachary Hansen, Derek Nelson, Cale Nelson, Dennis Nelson, Dean Nelson and Grant Nelson.

The Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dwain Norris Vangsness, age 78, of Adams, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, surrounded by his family.

Dwain was born on March 12, 1930 in Kenyon, Minnesota, the son of Clarence and Esther (Foss) Vangsness. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1948. He was drafted into the Army and served in the signal corps during the Korean Conflict.

He married Beverly Nelson on Nov. 12, 1955 at Holden Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1959 with a master's degree in agricultural education. The family moved to Adams where he taught high school agriculture and later agricultural farm management for 35 years.

Dwain was awarded the Minnesota Agriculture Teacher of the Year Award in 1984. He was also inducted into the Mower County Livestock Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Minnesota Future Farmers of America Hall of Fame in 2005.

Dwain was an active member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, the American Legion, Adams Fire Department, Lions Club and Habitat for Humanity; he was a 4-H leader and especially enjoyed being chairman of the Southland Faith Community Food Shelf. His favorite pastimes were bowling and playing cards with his buddies at Bubble's cafe in Adams. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. He passed away before finding out that Twins pitcher Pat Neshek needs surgery and will miss the 2009 season.

He will be greatly missed by his friends, family and cat, "Peggy."

Dwain is survived by his wife: Beverly Jean Vangsness, Adams, Minn.; sons: Steven (June) Vangsness, Ideldale, Colo., David (Julie) Vangsness, Bloomington, Minn.; daughter: Karen (Randy) Trom, Green Bay, Wis.; granddaughters: Amanda Trom, Royal Oak, Mich., : Rachel Trom, Green Bay; brothers: Leverene (Pat) Vangsness, Faribault, Minn.,: Clayton Vangsness, Kenyon.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church with the Reverends Shari Mason and Allen Gunderson officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery in Adams with Adams Post No. 146 American Legion in charge of military rites. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Friday for one hour before the service. Casket Bearers will be David Weness, Roger Weness, George Struthers, Lynn Sathre, Leroy Swanson and Wayne Pike.

Wayne R. Morehouse, age 67, of Mora, Minnesota died on November 6, 2008 at the VA Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, after a year long battle with cancer.

Wayne was born on July 2, 1941 in Mora to Melchor and Martha (Ripka) Morehouse. On February 8, 1964 he married Peggy Miller in Austin. They later divorced.

Wayne held many jobs over his lifetime, from cook, cab driver, limo driver, restaurant owner, liquor store operator and bartender. He was not afraid to try anything new. Wayne lived in Phoenix during the winter months, and in Mora in the summer months. He enjoyed fishing and golfing.

Survivors include his children: Pamela Morehouse, Aloha, Ore., Jeffery (Sheila) Morehouse, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; mother, Martha Morehouse, Austin; siblings: Janet (James) Seiver, Rochester, Michael Morehouse, Austin, Nancy (Terry) Lafin, Columbia, Md., Thomas (Dawn) Morehouse, Austin, Mark (Jan) Morehouse, Aylett, Va., Scott Morehouse (Linda), St. Cloud, JoAnne (Gene) Jiracek, Oakdale, Minn., Mary (Joe) Lukens, Harrisburg, Pa., Susan (Doug) Demoss, Austin, Diane (Keith) Unruh, Owatonna, Stephen Morehouse, Hayfield.

He is preceded in death by his father, Melchor Morehouse and brother, James Morehouse.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. The family will greet friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday evening at 1917 Seventh Ave. S.E. Austin and also a half-hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
