TWO DIE FROM GAS SUFFOCATION

Ben Glines, 31, and Mother, 76, Found Dead Today

WRITES NOTE TO MOTHER

Double Tragedy Discovered By Neighbors At 10 O'clock Today

Gas fumes issuing from the home of Mrs. Margaret Glines, 504 Lincoln street, attracted the attention of neighbors this morning at 10 o'clock and caused them to turn in an immediate alarm to the police department as well as to the coroner and the Austin Clinic. Investigation revealed the death of Ben Glines, thirty-one years old, and his mother, Mrs. Margaret Glines, seventy-six years of age, on the second floor of the house. Five burners of the gas stove in the kitchen were still open and the rooms continuing to fill with the deadly fumes when neighbors reached the scene.

Writes Note To Mother

A carefully written note on the kitchen table bore the following message addressed to Mrs. Glines and was signed by her son, Ben:

God Bless My Mother my last words, May 28, '22

To My Mother Dear,

Please forgive me for this rash act but it is the only way out of it. Things never did go right and I guess they won't. Please don't think that I am crazy for I am not. This hurts me worse than anything I ever done but I am sick, body and soul. I know that I am doing wrong but I trust in the Lord to help me. Have my good friend, Lafe Crandall settle up my business.

May the good Lord bless you.

This is a great world if you don't weaken, but I did.

For several months Ben Glines has operated a meat market on East Alleghany street and was apparently doing well in his business, hence the motive for his act is clouded except for the explanation made in the note addressed to his mother. Friends of Glines talked with him yesterday morning between 9 and 10 o'clock and while he showed signs of despondency, he gave no hint that he had any drastic action in mind although it is believed that the deed which ended his life was committed while his mother was attending the memorial services at the Congregational church.

Mrs. Glines had gone to the home of Mrs. L. M. Sharp, 303 So. St. Paul street, about 11 o'clock Sunday morning to remain for dinner after which she attended the memorial services in company with Mrs. Sharp. On arriving home shortly after 5 o'clock it is believed she went immediately to her son's room on the second floor after reading his note and the position of her body when found this morning would indicate that she was instantly overcome with the fumes and could not retrace her footsteps to the open air. Apparently endeavoring to avoid suffocation, Mrs. Glines put her head into a closet in her own room adjoining Ben's, but the effort was futile and the aged woman was found this morning clad in the black silk dress she had worn to the service yesterday.

76 Years Old March 14

Mrs. Glines was seventy-six years old on March 14 and was first married to William McKinney, who died severa years ago. Later she married Francis McCabe and moved with her husband to Austin about thirty-five years ago. Following Mr. McCabe's death, a third marriage followed to E. Glines, who died eighteen years ago. She is survived by three sons, B. and John McKinney of Detroit, Minn., Frank McCabe living in North Dakota and one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Clark of London. One son and one daughter died four and six years ago respectively.

Funeral services will likely be held Wednesday afternoon, depending upon the arrival of relatives, but definite announcement will be made tomorrow.

Leaves Note to Mother; Bodies Are Found by Neighbors Early This Morning.

Ben Glines, 34, and his mother, Mrs. Margaret Glines, 75, were found dead in their home at 504 East Lincoln street, by neighbors early this morning.

Passersby were attracted to the house about 10:00 a.m. by a strong odor of gas, and breaking in they found the man dead on the bed in an upstairs room and the aged woman lying on the floor in the clothes closet of the room.

Deputy Coroner H. F. Pierson, who was called, pronounced death due to asphyxiation.

Man Was Despondent.

It was believed that Glines, despondent, turned on the gas jet of the stove in his home yesterday afternoon while his mother was away, and when she returned at 5:00 o'clock in the afternoon, and went upstairs to her room, she too was overcome by the escaping gas.

When patrons of the Glines' little meat market at River and Allegheny streets were unable to get into the store this morning their suspicions were aroused, some of them said, and later in the morning persons passing the Glines house on Lincoln St., noticed the gas odor that penetrated out to the street from the house.

Leaves Letter to Mother.

The following letter from Glines to his mother was found on a table in a downstairs room:

"To My Mother Dear--Please forgive me for this rash act, but it is the only way out of it. Things never did go right and I guess they won't. Please don't think that I am crazy for I am not. At the top of the letter, which was written on a small sheet of tablet paper, he had added these words: "God bless my mother. My last words."

AGED MOTHER DIES AS SON IS A SUICIDE

According to Lafayette Crandall, the man mentioned in the letter, Glines was intoxicated Saturday, and closed his shop about 6:30 p.m. The next morning he went back to the shop and was seen leaving there about 10:00 a.m. He was seen again about three o'clock yesterday afternoon mowing the lawn in the front yard of his home.

Friends say that Glines was a nice appearing, and well-liked young man. It is thot that he was despondent after recovering from the effects of his drunkeness Saturday and ashamed that he couldn't break himself of the habit. His business was in thriving condition since he opened the shop about April 1.

Mother Attends Church.

His mother attended church Sunday morning and in the afternoon she attended the Memorial services in the Congregational church with a friend, Mrs. L. M. Sharp, at whose home she spent most of the afternoon. She left the Sharp home about five o'clock yesterday afternoon.

It is believed that the shock of finding her son's body caused her to collapse, and that she fell backwards into the closet of the bed room. Neighbors said that Mrs. Glines suffered from heart trouble, so that she was probably quickly overcome by the gas.

Mrs. Glines was married three times. She is survived by three sons, "Bell" and John McKinney of Detroit, Minn., Frank McCabe of Dakota, and one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Clark of London, Minn.

Her children were notified and some of them were expected this afternoon.

TRAGEDY'S DOUBLE FUNERAL

Impressive Services Before a Large Attendance Mark the Burial of Gas Asphyxiation Accident Victims

Two caskets stood before the platform of the Christian church yesterday afternoon while the pastor, Rev. G. F. Fink preached from the text, "For as much as ye know not what tomorrow may bring forth," drawing from the verse the lessons of the uncertainty of life.

The caskets contained the bodies of Mrs. Margaret Glines and her son Ben who met an untimely death by gas asphyxiation Sunday.

Not since the burial of Private Arthur Christianson and his brother-in-law Private George Hanson, who were buried from St. Olaf's Lutheran church in October 1918 has there been a double funeral service in this city. The tragedy of Sunday and the double funeral all lent an air of the unusual to the event and attracted the largest attendance ever seen at a funeral service at this church. Many were unable to get into the building.

Following the services the bodies were taken to Woodbury cemetery for burial.

DOUBLE FUNERAL SERVICES HELD

Throngs Attend Funeral Services for Tragedy Victims.

An audience that filled the Christian church yesterday afternoon came to hear the funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Glines, aged Austin woman, and her son, Ben Glines, who were found dead in their home at 504 East Lincoln street, early Monday morning, when passersby were attracted by gas funes issuning from the house.

The aged woman, whose death followed the suicide of her son, was the oldest living member of the Christian church, belonging to the charter group.

Large numbers of relatives, old neighbors and friends attended the funeral at the church and the burial at Woodland cemetery. Two caskets were banked with masses of floral offerings.

Rev. G. F. Fink, preaching the funeral services, base his address on two thoughts: That the scene presented was not commonplace, and that no one has the power of foresight, that no one can perceive what the future will bring.

The Christian church quartet sang and W. S. Gallagher and Mrs. Kennedy sang a duet.

OBITUARIES

Mrs. Terrance (Ted) Rose, the former Frances Coburn, was born March 31, 1897 in Perry, Iowa.

Frances Coburn and Ted Rose were united in marriage on July 20, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to Minnesota, living at times in Wells, St. Cloud, Tracy and Sleepy Eye. To this union were born a son, Howard, and a daughter, Dorothy. They moved to Billings, Montana in 1948 and returned to LeRoy, Minnesota in 1951 where they have lived continuously since.

Frances Coburn Rose was a teacher before marriage and was active in church and social orgazinations later. In LeRoy she served as librarian and a long time member of the library board.

Mrs. Rose passed away at the Spring Valley Community Hospital on Thursday, June 8, 1972. She is survived by her husband, Ted of LeRoy, a son, Howard and grandchildren, Steven, Nancy and Douglas of Valley City, North Dakota, a daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Clayton Ogle) and grandchildren Randall, Robert, Daniel and Cheri of Bozeman, Montana, Also surviving is a sister Mildred Coburn of Des Moines, Iowa and a brother, Marion Coburn of Columbus, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Terry Rose.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 12, 1972 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy with Rev. Donald Lundborg officiating. Mrs. John Jensen was the organist with Mrs. Donald Mossyge, the soloist. Interment was in the Tracy Cemetery at Tracy, Minnesota. Casket bearers were: Severin Hiller, S.B. Ludemann, George Wells, Elmer Larsen, Howard Hanks and Lloyd Nauman. Arrangements were with the Martz-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy.

Margaret (Marge) F. Chaffee, age 85, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 12, 2008 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester after a short illness.

She was born July 25, 1923 in Albert Lea, Freeborn county, Minnesota, to Walter and Agnes Morrison. She grew up in Albert Lea where she graduated from high school. Margaret then attended school in Minneapolis to become a hair stylist.

On January 8, 1942 she married Robert (Bob) K. Chaffee in Albert Lea. The couple moved to Texas and Kansas while Bob served in the military during WW II. After his discharge, the couple moved to Austin where Marge was a homemaker. In 1980, after Bob's retirement from Hormel, the couple moved to Arizona and returned to Minnesota in 1990. Bob died March 19, 1991.

Marge's passion was playing golf. She won many tournaments in the southern Minnesoat area. She also enjoyed spending time at her daughter and son-in-law's cabin in northern Minnesota.

Survivors include her daughters, Karen Chafee, Boulder, Colo. and Michelle (Mickey) Bakken and son-in-law, Perry Bakken, Rochester; nephew, Richard (Colette) Chaffee, Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Leo.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal and Father Paul Nelson officiating. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and 6:30 p.m. wake service on Tuesday evening at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Joseph Michael Shada, age 26, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota died September 12, 2008 at his home.

He was born Aug. 12, 1982 in Austin to Robert and Mary (Murphy) Shada.

Survivors include his parents, Mary (Tony) Diaz, Sheridan, Wyo. and Robert Shada, Austin; three siblings: Tom Murphy, Austin, Jeanette Riveros, Austin and Phillip Shada, Madison South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Fred and Carmen Murphy and Joe and Clara Shada.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Reverend Glenn Monson officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Myra Marie Foss, age 90, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died Sunday morning, Sept. 14, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. She was born July 30, 1918, to William and Maude (Vesper) Sweet at Elma, Iowa, where she grew up and attended school.

She married Arthur Jacobson on May 1, 1934, in Arlington, Iowa. They made their home in Cresco, Iowa. During the first few years, five children were born, and they moved to Arlington, Iowa. Later they moved to Minnesota where they settled in Lyle and later London.

Myra married Jay Foss on Sept. 19, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They resided on a farm south of London until retirement when they moved into Austin and wintered in Alamo, Texas. A member of Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, Myra baked and decorated cakes for 20 years and enjoyed crocheting, puzzles and traveling. She and Jay traveled to all 50 states and 17 foreign countries.

She is survived by three sons, Richard (Ellen) Jacobson of Owatonna, Wayne (Elaine) Jacobson of Wyoming and Larry Jacobson of Belton, Mo.; two daughters, Myrna Gray of Apple Valley, California; Bonnie (Leo) Bridley of Oakland; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; nine great- great-grandchildren; brother, Walter (Thelma) Sweet of Russellville, Ark.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, 87332 Stateline Road, rural Glenville with the Rev. Ronald D. Myers, officiating. Interment will follow the service at London – Deer Creek Cemetery, Worth County, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Clara Bernice Meyer, age 80, of Lyle, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Sept. 14, 2008 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.

She was born July 2, 1928 on the family farm near Osnabrock, North Dakota, the daughter of Einar and Lily (Monson) Nelson. Baptized and confirmed at Dovre Lutheran Church near Osnabrock, Clara graduated from Osnabrock High School and Dakota Business College in Fargo, N.D. She traveled to Minnesota to work for Hormel Foods in Austin.

On Sept. 5, 1948 she married Kenny C. Meyer in Langdon, N.D. They lived and farmed on the Meyer family farm near Lyle for many years. An active member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, a member of Lioness Club and Sons of Norway, Clara enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, dancing, watching her children and grandchildren play sports and visiting with friends and family.

Survivors include her four children: Lonna (Ron) Ellis, Gary (Betty) Meyer, Jeff (Robin) Meyer, all of Lyle, Jill (Jamie) Patterson, rural St. Ansgar, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Betty (Laurel) Thoreson, West Fargo, N.D., and Amy (Arlan) Olson, Milaca; brother: the ReverendPaul (Joann) Nelson, Owatonna; brother-in-law: Clayton (Roseann) Meyer, Austin; many other relatives and friends.

Her husband, parents and a nephew, David Meyer, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church with Pastor Lydia Mittag and Pastor Paul Nelson officiating. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service. Delano "Dano" Alberto Riles, age 45, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

Dano was born to Alberto and Patricia DeLaCruz on Sept. 12, 1963. He graduated from Austin High School in 1982 and went on to work in the construction industry. Dano was creative, caring and a giving soul and was always willing to offer friends and family a helping hand when needed. He had a passion and great talent for cooking, he loved listening to music, he had a caring nature for children, and he also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid Viking fan.

Survivors include his daughter, Shawna Riles, Kenosha, Wis.; father, Paul (Cathy) Riles, Plymouth, Iowa; brothers, Dennis (Jessica) Riles, Hudson, Wis., Dominic Riles, Rochester, Minn.; nieces, Robin and Isabel Riles; nephew, Elijah Riles; great-nephew, Cayden Riles; numerous other caring and supportive family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Patricia (Opsahl) Forslund; grandparents, Howard and Hazel Riles, Theadore and Leona Opsahl; uncles, Donny Riles, Curtis Opsahl, Jack Green (Betty); aunts, Nancy Ratzsolf, Mary Niemi (Bill).

Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.

Wilma Anderson, 99, died on Sept. 15, 2008, at Guardian Angel’s Care Center in Elk River.

Wilma Louise Ramsey was born to Esty and Grace (Manrose) Ramsey on May 6, 1909 in Ottawa (Franklin County) Kansas. As a young child Wilma moved with her family to Illinois, and at age 10, moved by train to Blooming Prairie where she graduated from high school in 1927 and from Mankato Normal School with her teaching degree in 1928. She taught in rural, one room schools in the Blooming Prairie School District for 11 years.

She married Alvin Clifford Anderson on June 24, 1939 at First Lutheran parsonage in Blooming Prairie, and they resided in Austin. Wilma worked in the Whittier and Shaw school cafeterias for 18 years. In 2003 she moved from her home of 64 years to a senior apartment in Anoka, and in March 2006, to Guardian Angel’s Center in Elk River. The most important part of Wilma’s life was spending time with her family, but she also was very active in all phases of her life at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. She loved to bake cookies, garden, read, sew, quilt, and take her many annual fishing trips to Leech Lake with Alvin and family. Wilma’s genuine and heart-warming smile and her kind and gentle nature will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Wilma is survived by two daughters, Arlene (Michael) Kelly, Coon Rapids; Marion (Tom) Neisen, Hutchinson; grandchildren, Kerri (Richard) Kindsvater, Kristen (Corey) Ireland, Bill (Kayla) Neisen and Bryan (Amy) Neisen; great-grandchildren, Ethan Kindsvater, Carter Neisen and Colton Neisen; step-grandson, Dustin Henke; sisters-in-law, Marcella Ramsey, Blooming Prairie and Buna Ramsey, Big Stone Gap, Va.; nieces and nephews.

Preceding Wilma in death were her husband, Alvin Clifford Anderson on July 20, 1983; her parents, Esty and Grace Ramsey; sister, Irene (Joseph) Lynard; brothers, Robert (Gladys) Ramsey, Clyde Ramsey and Gilbert Ramsey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Myron and Alvina Anderson

Master Sgt. (U.S. Air Force, Retired)

Our beloved husband, father, brother and friend Kenneth Rice passed to a peaceful place September 6, 2008 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Ken was born January 7, 1946 in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, to Kenneth and Leona (Nelson) Rice. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant. He worked as a computor operator in the Air Force and after retirement he worked at NORAD.

Ken is survived by his wife of 40 years, Vicki; five daughters, Kelly, Kimberly, Kristina, Krystal, and Kendall; two brothers, Bill (Carole) Rice, Eugene Ore., and Bob (Ruth) Rice Austin. Two sisters, Sharon (Walt) Strangman, Minneota, Minn. and Mary (Arnie) Boyenga, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Jean Sargent and daughter, Kerry Rice.

Funeral services were held Sept. 11, 2008 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Monetary donations can be sent in Ken's name to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Eleanor Majerus, 92, of Adams, died on Sept. 15, 2008 at the Adams Healthcare Center.

Eleanor Theresa Fruth was born Sept. 17, 1915 in Rose Creek, Minn. to Anton and Olive (Davis) Fruth.

On Aug. 2, 1933 she was united in marriage to Jacob J. "Jack" Majerus at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rose Creek. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1966.

Eleanor was involved in the CCW, making hundreds of quilts for the missions. She did much sewing for people of the community, she loved to travel and she enjoyed gardening-especially her gladiolus. Eleanor's favorite pastime was playing cards. She was a homemaker. Her family meant much to her, especially attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting events.

Survivors include her children, Sister Arlene Majerus OSF, Rochester, Minnesota, Elaine Kloeckner, Adams, Minn., Dorothy (Michael) Dvorocsik, Myerstown, Pennsylvania, Arnold (Shirley) Majerus, Burnsville, Ralph (Barbara) Majerus, Cedar Falls, Iowa, James (Susan) Majerus, Ponca City, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Sharon Majerus, St. Clair Shores, Mich.; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; seven step-great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Joseph (Bonnie) Fruth, Lafayette, Colo., Vincent (Lorraine) Fruth, Boone, Iowa, Frances (Florian) Otto, Nyles, Michigan, Virginia (Bernard) Lammers, Rose Creek; sister-in-law, Gladys Fruth, Grand Meadow, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.

There will be a 5 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Nina Ann Heiny, daughter of Henry and Antonette Machacek Moshier was born in Lyle Township, Mower County on January 29, 1894. She attended the rural schools in Mower County, and on April 3, 1918 she was united in marriage with Ralph Adelbert Warrington.

On October 15, 1918 Mr. Warrington passed away while in the service of his country. On February 25, 1919 a daughter, Ruth Arleen was born. Nina and her daughter made their home with a brother, Frank Moshier on the family farm for a number of years.

After her daughter's marriage to Leonard Heiny, Jr. in July 1938 she made her home with them until her marriage to Leonard Heiny, Sr. on May 2, 1945. They made their home at 1204 Ninth Street NW. Mr. Heiny passed away on November 11, 1963. Mrs. Heiny was taken ill in September 1972 and entered Sacred Heart Hospice, where she passed away on the morning of June 20.

Mrs. Heiny was a member of Unity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star for almost fifty years, she had been a member of the Royal Neighbors for over fifty years and had served as recorder for twenty five years. She had served as secretary of the Willing Workers Cemetery Association for a number of years and had served as treasurer of the Cedar City Cemetery Association for thirty nine years.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. at The First United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Nyberg officiating. Interment was at Cedar City Cemetery with Harold Allen, Lorenz Lorenzon, Clifford Barclay, Milo Cafourek, Wayne Hotson and Albert Gemmel serving as bearers. The organist was Mr. Kavin Sampson and the soloist, Mr. Gerald Wakefield. The Jordan Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Heiny is survived by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard (Ruth) Heiny, Jr., Glenville; four grandchildren, Taryl Heiny and wife, Phyllis, Gary Heiny and wife, Patricia, Sharyl and husband, Eugene Nelson and Linda and husband, Dennis Whalen; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Emily Magee, Austin; four step daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Opal) Stanton, New Hampson, Iowa, Mrs. Patrick (Wilma) Wilson, Escondido, Cal., Mrs. Goldie Von Feldt, Tempe, Ariz., Mrs. Doris Ashton, Austin; three step-sons, George and Sidney Heiny, Austin, James Heiny, Lansing; nieces and nephews.

Leonard H. Heiny, son of Ignatius and Frances Forman Heiny, was born on a farm near Rock Falls, Iowa on Oct. 7, 1887.

On December 6, 1908, he was united in marriage with Miss Mae Wyborney and they farmed for a number of years. Later Mr. Heiny operated a meat market at Plymouth, Iowa. In 1916, the family moved to Medina, N.D., and in 1931, they came to Minnesota.

Mr. Heiny was employed by the Geo. A. Hormel Co. in 1934 in the livestock department until he retired in 1958.

Mrs. Heiny passed away January 4, 1943.

On May 2, 1945, Mr. Heiny was married to Nina Warrington.

Mr. Heiny passed away at St. Olaf Hospital on the afternoon of Nov. 8, 1963. At the time of his death he resided at 1209 9th St. NW.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 11, 1963, at 1 p.m. at the First Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Rollin officiating. Interment was at Plymouth Cemetery, Plymouth, Iowa, with Lee Machacek Sr., Glenn Machacek, Ben Cafourek, Harold Warrington, Homer Warrington, Donald Weseman serving as bearers.

Mr. Heiny is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nina Heiny; four daughters, Mrs. Wayne Stanton (Opal), New Hampton, Iowa, Mrs. Patrick Wilson (Wilma), Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Sylvanus Von Feldt (Goldie) and Mrs. Doris Ashton, Austin; four sons, George and Sidney Heiny, Austin, Leonard Heiny, Glenville and James Heiny, Lansing; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a brother, Frank Heiny, Huron, S.D.

Out-of-town persons attending the funeral came from Phoenix, Ariz; New Hampton, Iowa; Minneapolis, Osage.

Cedric Samuel Warrington, 86, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996, at LaCanada, Calif.

He was born November 26, 1908, in Austin, one of twelve children, to Samuel and Nettie (Trowbridge) Warrington. He graduated from Austin High School and later attended the University of Minnesota. He married Vila Magee in 1931 in Austin. They moved to Pasadena, Calif., where he was owner of Warrington Auto Service for 46 years. He was a member of the Pasadena Lions Club and Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by wife, Vila of 65 years, son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Gayle Warrington, Marina Del Key, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Walter Cranston, Lockeford, Calif.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, Sylvan Warrington, Chicago, Ill., Richard and Dorris Warrington, La Canada, Calif., Dolly Warrington, Austin, Frances Warrington, Austin; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, eight brothers and two sisters.

Service: 10:30 a.m. graveside service Monday, Nov. 4, at Cedar City Cemetery, rural Austin, the Rev. Becky Jo Thilges officiating.

Visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, Austin. There will be no reviewal.

Interment: Cedar City Cemetery, rural Austin.

Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association or the donors choice.

Leonard F. Heiny, Jr., age 87, of Austin, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at his home. He was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Plymouth, Iowa, to Leonard and Mae (Wyborney) Heiny. He married Ruth Warrington on July 30, 1938, in rural Austin. Together they farmed in rural London for nearly 50 years. Leonard was president of the London Firemans Club and volunt eer firefighters, 4-H Livestock Leader, and served on the Conservation Club Board for many years. He also served on the District 51 School Board. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Austin Eagles Club and the Lyle Legion. He and Ruth spent 20 winters in Texas. He loved spending time with family and friends, telling stories, horses, camping, and fishing at Cherney's.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Wilma Wilson and Doris Ashton; brothers, George and James Heiny; mother-in-law, Nina Warrington Heiny; and grandson, Darren Heiny.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia M. Toschak officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Saturday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at the church one hour before the service. The organist will be Becky Bissen and the soloist will be Blanche Hollerud. Honorary bearers will be Kim Underwood, Kris Baldus, Chad Heiny, Tiffany Nowak and Wendy Whalen. John James Goslee was born Jan. 27, 1927, at Austin, the son of James and Ida Carle Goslee. He attended grade school at Dist. 41 and graduated from Austin High School in 1945.

As a boy, he attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

He was united in marriage with Evelyn Magee, March 19, 1947 at Austin. They have been engaged in farming at their farm on Glenville Rt. 1. John had always been interested in farming and as a young boy was active in the London 4-H Club. He was also a member of the Farmers Union, London Conservation Club, and had served on the board of directors of the Consolidated Breeders Co-op, and as a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Austin Aerie 703.

John passed away suddenly Sunday morning, Nov. 4, 1962, at St. Olaf Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; four sons, Keith, Dwight, Larry and Randy; two daughters, Janiene and Meridee; his mother, Mrs. Ida Goslee; one sister, Mrs. Edgar Mendenhall (Marion), Edmonds Wash.; one brother, Richard T. Goslee, Austin; five nieces; eight nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Jordan Mortuary Chapel, Rev. Merland Johnson officiating. Interment was at London Cemetery with Maurice Carrol, Jack Balcorn, Homer Warringson, Ronald Machacek, Duane Orth, Lee Machacek Jr. serving as bearers.

Keith John Goslee, 58, died the evening of Friday, Oct. 14, at his home in Geneva, Minn. after a 10-month battle with lung cancer.

Keith was born Oct. 4, 1947 in Austin, Minn., the son of John and Evelyn (Magee) Goslee. He was baptized at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, and graduated from Lyle High School in 1965. Following high school, Keith served with the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1969. On Jan. 31, 1970, he was united in marriage to Mari lyn Rohne at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church.

Keith was a resident of southern Minnesota all his life, living in Lyle until 1980, and then moving to Geneva in 1981. He was employed by Queens in Albert Lea and Hormel Foods in Austin for several years. He also worked for Geneva Pork Producers, Geneva Meats and most recently as a product specialist for Cabela's in Owatonna.

Keith was a member of the Lyle American Legion and Alcoholics Anonymous, where he would have celebrated 20 years of sobriety this December.

Keith enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, four-wheeling and spending time at his cabin in northern Minnesota. He loved watching fast-pitch softball and many other sports, and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Keith is survived by his mother, Evelyn Goslee of Austin, Minn.; wife, Marilyn of Geneva, Minn.; children, Melanie (Scott) Crabtree of rural Ellendale, Minn. and Kyle (Heather) Goslee of Montevideo, Minn.; grandchildren, Emily and Hanna Crabtree; brothers, Dwight (Linda) Goslee of Elkhorn, Neb.; Larry (Paula) Goslee of rural Austin, Minn.; Randy Goslee of Marina del Ray, Calif.; sisters, Janiene Goslee of rur al Glenville, Minn., Meridee (Dwight) Denisen of Rochester, Minn.; brothers-in-law, Allen (Judy) Rohne of rural Glenville, Minn., Mike (Alayna) Rohne of rural Glenville, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his yellow lab, Skeeter.

Albert Spencer "Al" Johnson, 86, of Austin, died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota, on Sept. 16, 2008. He was born Sept. 15, 1922 in Walker, Minnesota.

His parents were Carl and Lillie (Isaacson) Johnson. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1940. In 1942 he enlisted in the Air Force and became a link trainer instructor. After his military service ended, Al became employed by the Soil Conservation Department in Stillwater, where he met Virginia Jolson.

They were married on Nov. 30, 1944 in St. Paul. Al owned a photography studio in Hibbing and was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church there. In his late 30’s Al began college at Hibbing Community College and graduated from Bemidji State College. In 1961 they moved to Austin where Al taught German in Austin Public Schools until his retirement in 1986. A devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church, he enjoyed biking, photography, woodworking, music and their summers at the lake near Hibbing.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; daughter, Nancy (Richard) Stonehouse, Huntersville, N.C.; son, Rodney (Deborah) Johnson, Elk River; three grandchildren, Eric (Chris) Stonehouse, Amanda (Scott) Odmoth and Emily Johnson; brother, Charles (Gladys) Johnson, Hastings; sister, Faye (Ed) Miller, Milaca; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillie and Carl, and a grandson, Jon Stonehouse.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Jeff Forbes officiating. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jane Sperry was born on December 1, 1919, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in the house her maternal grandfather built. She was the second of two children born to Irvin Clifford Noonan and Ollie Marie (Cratsenberg) Noonan.

When Betty was one year old her mother, Ollie, died at age 26 of cancer of the breast. Ollie’s dying request to her husband Irvin was that her mother, Anna (Schilling) Cratsenberg, be allowed to raise Betty and her six year old sister, Darlene.

Betty graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1937. On July 2, 1939, she married John Floyd Sperry at Central Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Following John’s graduation in 1950 from Dental School at the University of Minnesota, he and Betty moved to LeRoy, Minn., where John established his dental practice. Betty started working as a part time receptionist in John’s office. In 1958 John and Betty moved to Austin; and in 1974 Betty successfully completed courses and clinical examinations that resulted in her being licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Certified and Registered Dental Assistant. All together, John and Betty worked together in the practice of dentistry for nearly 50 years.

Betty was an active member of the Southeastern Dental Assistants Association and past president of the Southeastern Dental Association Auxiliary. In 2008 Betty was honored for her 50 years of membership in Chapter CU of PEO. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for 50 years and served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Trustee.

Betty and her husband John enjoyed many summer getaways at their lake home on Lake Ida in Alexandria and winter retreats to Coco Beach, Fla. Betty and John also enjoyed numerous foreign trips, including such destinations as: England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Eastern Europe, Spain, Morocco, Cuba, China and Japan. Many of these trips were shared with their dear friends Neil and Betty Munro.

Betty was physically active and enjoyed roller skating, golf and tennis. She was also an enthusiastic Bridge player.

She is survived by her loving sons and daughter-in-law, John Sperry, Eden Prairie, Minn., Stephen (Gretchen) Sperry, Litchfield, Minn.; grandson, Daniel Sperry, Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter, Caroline VanSloun, Chaska, Minn.; step-granddaughters, Tara (Ryan) Gundrum, Grafton, Wis., Briana Anderson, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; her very dear nieces, the daughters of her deceased sister, Darlene.

A memorial service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. You are invited to greet the Sperry family in the church parlor immediately following the memorial service. There will also be a time for food and fellowship in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made in Betty Sperry’s name to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Esther Lillian Snyder, age 95, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota died on September 16, 2008 at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.

Esther was born December 14, 1912 in Roslyn, South Dakota to Adolph and Mina (Lensegrav) Thorness.

On March 31, 1934 she married Raymond John Snyder in Webster, South Dakota. Esther was a homemaker. She loved baking, coffee parties with friends, watching Lawrence Welk and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Keith (Debra) Snyder, Austin; daughter-in-law, Mary Snyder, Austin; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Edith (Clarence) Sandvick, Bristol, S.D.; sister-in-law, Verna Ogren, Palo Alto, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on June 12, 1993; her son, Jerry on Feb. 1, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday and one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Friday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Leslie James Hoffman, age 81, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Friday, September 19, 2008, at his home. He was born on March 23, 1927, near Hayward, Minnesota, the son of Willis George and Ingeborg “Belle” (Prestagaard) Hoffman. He attended school in Albert Lea and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1945.

Following graduation, Leslie served with the United States Army. He was stationed at bases in Missouri, Texas and New Jersey attaining the rank of Sergeant while serving with signal corp.

After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he married Ethel L. Barber on Sept. 12, 1953, in Austin. The couple lived near Blooming Prairie, where Leslie was employed by the Geo. A. Hormel Company from 1948 until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed being with his family, growing tomatoes in his garden, raising his sheep and tinkering in his shop.

He was a member of Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, a life-member of American Legion Post #52 of Blooming Prairie and served as Treasurer of the Red Oak Grove Cemetery Association for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Hoffman of Austin; three children, Marcia (Darrel) Peterson of Rapid City, S.D., Mark (Ginger) Hoffman of Pequot Lakes and Mike (Julie) Hoffman of Blooming Prairie; eight grandchildren, Steve (Gretchen) Lundeen, Marin (Beau) Maxon, Seth Lundeen, John Mark (Autumn) Lundeen, Zachary Hoffman, Ethan Hoffman, Carley Hoffman and Kyle Hoffman; three great-grandchildren, Justin Burns, Hannah and Asa Lundeen; one brother, Harold Hoffman of Austin; one sister-in-law. Harriet Hoffman of Austin and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceeded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Wilfred “Bud” Hoffman; and two sisters, Orla Knudson and Gennieve Jordet.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gene Leiter, officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery with military honors by members of VFW Post 878 and American Legion Post #52 of Blooming Prairie. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., today at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials are preferred to the Red Oak Lutheran Cemetery Fund or the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church Debt Reduction Fund.

Robert Neil Swanson, age 89, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 19, 2008 at Fieldcrest Care Center, Hayfield, Minnesota.

He was born on June 22, 1919 to John and Sannie (Trowbridge) Swanson in Ottertail County, Minnesota. He married Sara Saumweber on Dec. 31, 1944 in Fargo, N.D. Robert attended St. Paul Bible Institute and became an ordained pastor. He also worked in the postal service. They made their home in Detroit Lakes; St. Peter; Jackson Hole, Wyo. and Thermopolis, Wyo. before moving to Austin in 2001. They were members of Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Sara; three daughters, Kathleen (Vernon) Lewis, Austin; Rebecca Swanson, Glendora, Calif., Mary Kay (William) Ernst, Oak Grove; five grandchildren, Ramona Colee, Andrea Lewis, Rebekah Sundberg, Laurie Brown and Joshua Ernst; three great-grandchildren; sister, Mayme Peterson, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Erna DeFor Walker, age 83, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 20, 2008 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin.

Erna Marie Hansen was born April 16, 1925 in Austin to Jacob and Mary (Jorgensen) Hansen. Following graduation from Austin High School, she married Vernon DeFor on March 16, 1942 in Owatonna. Vernon died on Nov. 2, 1959. Erna worked hard to raise three teenage children.

Erna married Ray Walker on March 28, 1974 in Merrillville, Indiana. Ray died on March 6, 1975.

Erna moved to California from Austin in the forties, worked for a few years in Minneapolis and Faribault before moving back permanently to Austin. Erna worked as a cook and homemaker and was employed by the State Hospital in Faribault in the 70’s and 80’s. She loved to knit mittens and afghans and watch Little House on the Prairie. She was known for her famous sugar cookies and loved to watch the grandchildren and attend Sunday School and Worship Services.

Survivors include three children, David (Donna) DeFor and Stephen DeFor, Austin; special friend, Mary Lund, Geneva; Cecelia (Andrew) Manoochehri, Pasadena, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Vernon DeFor; her second husband, Ray Walker; and a sister, Edna McAnally.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at the Church of Christ in Austin with the Reverend David DeFor and the Reverend Stephen DeFor officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. The Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Crystal Mae Holmquist, age 81, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Saturday September 20, 2008.

Crystal Holmquist was born in Ashby, Minnesota, June 27, 1927. She graduated from Concordia Lutheran College and married Howard on June 13, 1948. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Crystal and Howie moved to Silver Bay, Minnesota. in 1956 and raised their family there. After Howie’s death, Crystal moved to Austin in 2006 to be closer to family. Her greatest hope is for people to come to know the saving power of God through Jesus Christ. She was involved with Community Bible Study, Alpha, youth ministries, serving those in need, Hefer Project and various Bible Study groups. Crystal’s desire as she participated in all of these was to glorify God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Holmquist; parents, Isaac and Tilla Caroline Evavold; and 11 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Michael (Carol), Blaine, Minnesota, Steve (Georgie), Medina, Minnesota; by three daughters: Susan Patterson, Charlotte, North Carolina, Carol (Curtis) Simonson, Savage, Minnesota, and Sandy (Kevin) Anderson, Austin; by 14 grandchildren; by 10 great-grandchildren; by two sisters, Bernice (Bing) Olson, Ashby, Minnesota, and Louise (Dick) Smith, Plymouth, Minnesota.

On Sunday, September 28, 2008 a memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Free Methodist at 3 p.m. in Austin, where Crystal worshipped since her move to Austin in 2006. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors, Minnesota. Immediately following the service Crystal will be buried next to her beloved husband, Howard Holmquist, at Sawtooth Cemetery near Lax Lake, Minnesota.

Nellie Susan Laite Bartlett, age 76, died at her home in Sargeant, Mower county, Minnesota, on September 22, 2008.

Nellie Susan Church was born June 16, 1932, the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (Hoffdmann) Church in Waltham, Minnesota. Nellie was united in marriage to LeRoy Laite and later he died.

She married Keith Bartlett in 1987. Nellie worked for Gerard Academy in Austin and drove a school bus for the Hayfield school district for a number of years. Nellie enjoyed gardening, flowers and tractor shows.

Nellie is survived by her husband, Keith Bartlett, Sr., Sargeant; by a daughter, Nancy Prince, Chico, California; by two sons, Louie Laite, Barstow, California, Jimmy Dean Laite, Fairfield, Illinois; by four grandchildren; by 14 great-grandchildren; by five stepchildren: Anna Waters, Hayfield, Minnesota, Keith Bartlett, Jr., Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, Ellen Bartlett, Hayfield, Minnesota, Phillip, Bartlett, Florida, and James Bartlett, Austin; and by 11 step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her first husband, LeRoy; by a sister; and a step-grandson.

Visitation will be on Sept., 24, 2008, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2008, at Zion United Methodist Church in Sargeant, Minnesota. Interment will be in Waltham Township Cemetery.

Idalia Bernice Mooney (Ingvalson), age 92, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died peacefully on September 20, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford “Pinky” Mooney; by a twin sister, Benalia Staples; by a sister, Jeannette Bell; and by a brother, Kenneth Ingvalson.

She is survived by five children: James E. (Glenda) Mooney, Patricia (Dave) Maccabee, Sandra (Wally) Morton, Karen (Kingsley) Dorholt and Vernon Mooney; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two brothers: Roger Ingvalson and Burton Ingvalson.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Mueller Lake Memorial, 4738 Bald Eagle Ave., White Bear Lake and one hour prior to service at church. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake. Interment is at Lakeview Cemetery.

Friends in Large Number Attended
J.O. Johnson Funeral Thursday Afternoon

The Funeral of J. O. Johnson, Nov. 6, was largely attended. Rev. T. G. Torvik gave a stirring message, and urged his hearers to be ready when the Master shall call, yea to have a living and abiding hope, here and now. A short grave side messages was given, Sterling Krause sang both at the church and at the grave where he rendered " I Will Meet You in the Morning" in an impressive manner. Interment was in the family lot in the beautiful hill side cemetery at Hayward.

John O. Johnson was born at Stevens Point, Wisconsin on July 16, 1859, the eldest son of Ole A. and Isabelle Johnson, early pioneers who came to America from Norway. Johns Moved with his parents to Albert Lea, Minn., at the age of nine years, when that now beautiful city consisted of two small buildings unserved by any railroad. The ox team was the manner of transportation, Shortly the family settled on a farm three miles east of Albert Lea on the Austin road. John worked with his father on this farm until he was 25 years of age, when he established himself on his own farm and later married Mathilda Arneson of Lyle, Minnesota on Sept. 25, 1888.

To this union were born four sons: Dr. Odin J. Johnson of Colton, Calif., Chester W. Johnson of Minneapolis, Webster Johnson of Lyle, Minn and Lawrence A Johnson, a son who died in infancy. In l938 John and Mathilda celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their beautiful farm home with friends from all parts of the state.

Just before John's death they had made extensive arrangements for their sixtieth wedding anniversary to be celebrated Sept. 25th 1948.

John left the farm in 1891 and went into general mercantile business at Hayward Minnesota and later at Lyle, Minn.

This place is just at the outskirts of the village where he lived until his death, except for retirement in Minneapolis for a period of thirteen years. He died from accidental causes on Nov, 1. 1947 at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 15 days.

John suffered all the hardships and difficulties of the pioneers. Her came up the hard way, but through tireless effort and industry steadily overcame all obstacles to find peace, success and security. Here was truly a man of uncompromising integrity, sterling character and boundless energy and industry, who exemplified those study men who helped make America what it is today.

He is survived by his widow, Mathilda, three sons, three brothers, Chas. H., Andrew W., and Theodore S. Johnson, also by eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

"The Lord hath given, The Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." God knows the way. He holds the key, He guides us with unerringhand, Sometime with tearless eyes we'll see. Yes, there, up there, we'll understand. Blessed 'be the memory of this your husband, father, grandfather, and our beloved friend.

Prominent Citizen Passed Away

J.O. Johnson, one of Lyle's foremost citizens, died at the hospital at Austin, Saturday evening following an accident at the home Friday afternoon when he was trampled by a bull.

J.O. was getting the mangers ready for the stock, and Art Gekler was putting hay in the mangers when the cattle came in. Johnson was warned by Gekler that the bull was coming, but he thought he could protect himself. The animal lunged at Johnson and knocked him down. Mr. Gekler drove the animal away with a pitchfork. Mr. Johnson was rushed to the hospital where he passed away the following day.

The tragedy takes from this community one of the eldest (88) and well respected citizens. By hard work and planning the Johnsons accumulated much of this world's goods. They have been identified with the progress and best interests of the home, church, school and community.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, and interment was in the family lot at Hayward cemetery. Obituary next week.

Dorothy Lucille Sayles, age 82, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 24, 2008 at Austin Medical Center.

She was born on March 3, 1926 in Austin, to Purl L. and Helen (Blom) Gordon. Dorothy graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1944. Following school she went to work in the office of Dr. J.G.W. Havens in Austin. She was married to Raymond R. Sayles, after he returned from the Navy, on May 10, 1947 at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church parsonage by the Reverend Arthur L. Swenson.

The Sayles have resided and farmed along county road No. 4 near the Enterprise School. Dorothy was a homemaker and farm wife who enjoyed cooking and baking.

As active participants in the 4-H program, Ray and Dorothy have served at leaders for the Enterprise 4-H club for a number of years, with all of the children showing Holstein cattle at the fair and the girls doing sewing and baking. This past summer the Sayles family was named the Mower County Farm Family for 2008. Dorothy was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Dorothy is survived by her spouse, Raymond Richard Sayles, Austin; daughters: Judy (James) Bartlett, Austin, Rhonda (Dean) Borgstahl, Owatonna, Minn., Karen (Rick) Sundberg, Austin; sons: Wayne Sayles, Austin, Dean Sayles, Austin; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters: Lavonne and Gayle Bergstrom, Adams, Minn., Carol Bloxham, Bettendorf, Iowa; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Delmer Lord, Austin; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Mark Sayles; infant son, Jerry; daughter-in-law, Debbie Sayles; and son's fiancee, Melanie Selken.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church with the Reverend Jeffrey Forbes officiating. Interment will be in the Enterprise Cemetery, Austin. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and at Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The family prefers memorials. The organist will be Linda Anderson with soloist will be David Wiedemann

Casketbearers will be: Jason Bartlett, Justin Bartlett, Julie Sayles, Scott Sayles, Craig Sayles and Stephanie Sundberg. Honorary bearers will be Kristin Borgstahl, Rachel Borgstahl, Sara Sundberg and Shannon Sundberg.

Dorothy Adele Viker, 100, died at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008.

She was born April 2, 1908 in Stockholm, South Dakota, to Iver and Anna (Olsen) Iversen. Her father’s work as manager of lumber companies made moving to Alexandria, West Concord, Kenyon and Hayfield necessary. Dorothy graduated from Hayfield High School in 1925, attended Macalester College for two years and then completed her work for a bachelor of science degree in education, and music and English at the University of Minnesota in 1929.

She did graduate work at the University of Denver, MacPhail School and others. She taught music, English and speech in Sherburn, Flaxville, Montana, Excelsior, Little Falls, and Austin. During that time she was a music supervisor for K-12, directed choirs, organized and directed a band and drum and bugle corps, plays and musical productions.

On June 29, 1946 she was united in marriage to Melvin H. Viker. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada and had many similar interests, including music. They lived in Little Falls, Richfield and Austin until Melvin’s death in 1982. Dorothy was involved in the communities in which she lived, including the Austin Floral Club, Symphony Study Group and Sons of Norway. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, she was active in choir, circle, WELCA, Bible study, book study, People Needing People, Needle Workers Guild, Caring Ministry and 50 Plus.

Survivors include a niece, Janet Harvey, Bloomington; two nephews: Carlton (Cynthia) Miller, Chippewa Falls, Wis. and Robert (Carole) Iversen, Edina; four grand-nieces: Michelle (Patrick) Barrett, Fridley, Jill Iversen, New Prague, Lynn (Scott) Anger, Jordan, and Vickie Iversen, Minneapolis; seven grandnephews: David (Gabriella) Miller, Middletown, Del., Andrew (Kelli) Miller, Omaha, Neb., Thomas (Jodi) Murphy, Jr., Nicollet, Victor (Elizabeth) Murphy, St. Paul, Colin and Daniel Murphy, both of Minneapolis, and David Harvey of Bloomington; seven great-grandnieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 2 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. The Worlein Funeral Home in Austin is in charge of funeral arrangements.
