Dilazon S. Moshier

1822-1900

Birth: Feb. 28, 1822
Death: Jul. 26, 1900

Died. Moshier.

D. S. Moshier passed away at his home on Jay street at 6 o'clock this morning after being confined to his bed for over three months. Heart failure was the cause of his death, age 78 years. The deceased is one of Mower County's oldest settlers having been a resident for 45 years and has lived in the city one year. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his departure, four boys Henry, Harriet, Isaac, George, and two girls Margaret and Carrie.

The funeral arrangements will not be made until all the children arrive. The services will be held in Woodbury, and the interment will be made in that cemetery. Rev. Lemmon of the Christian church, of which Mr. Moshier has been a member for thirty five years, will conduct the services.

OBITUARY:

At his residence in this city, Thursday, July 26, 1900, of old age, Dilazon Scribner Moshier, aged 78 years. He had been in poor health for a long while. He was born in Canterbury, N.Y., February 28, 1822. When 17 years old he removed to Westmoreland county, Penn. and May 21, 1846, was married at Freeport to Miss Elizabeth Milliken.

They came west in the spring of 1855, coming from Pittsburg to McGregor by steamboat. While on their way to Postville, Iowa, where Mr. Moshier's brother lived, their two youngest children died and were buried at Postville. They reached Woodbury creek in Lyle township June 14th and preempted the N. W. quarter of section 30. Here they lived until two or three years ago when they came to Austin to live.

Their golden wedding was appropriately celebrated May 21, 1896, at their home in Lyle. They both united with the Christian denomination about 35 years ago. The widow survives and six children: Henry, of Lyle; Oliver P., of Otranto; Isaac, of Glenville; George, in Montana; Mrs. Martin Henry, of Staples, Minn; and Mrs. Margaret Glines of Austin.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. S. Lemmon, were held at Woodbury schoolhouse Saturday afternoon, a large concourse of friends and relatives being present.

Mrs. H. Moshier of Near London Passes Away

Died at the Home of Her Son Frank on Saturday Morning, May 18, After a Long Illness.

On Saturday evening [note: headline says morning], May 18, Mrs. Henry Moshier. Moshier passed away at the home of her son Frank near London village. Mrs. Moshier had been a long sufferer and was confined in her bed for several weeks before death came to relieve her.

Besides her son Frank she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Nina Warrington and Mrs. Joe Magee, both of near London. The funeral was held this afternoon, May 20, at the London church. Interment was made in Woodbury cemetery in Lyle, Minnesota. The deceased was a sister of the late Charles Machacek of this city.

Mrs. Henry Moshier passed away at her home in Lyle township Saturday, May 18, 1929, following an illness due to complication of diseases which confined her to her room the past six weeks. The passing of this good woman brings sorrow to her many relatives and scores of friends.

Antonet Machacek was born October 2, 1855 at Kutna Hora, Bohemia. In 1864 she came with her parents and nine other children to America and lived on a farm near St. Ansgar, Iowa, residing there until 1875 when they came to Lyle township.

Antonet was united in marriage with Henry Moshier on September 4, 1878 who preceded her in death nine years ago. Five children were born to this union, Ida Etta whodied in infancy, Mrs. Helen Magee who died September 18, 1914. Thos who survive the deceased are her son Frank Moshier, two daughters, Mrs. Nina Warrington and Mrs. Emily Magee, also three granddaughters, Vila and Evely Magee and Ruth Warrington all of Lyle township; also two brothers Lewis Machacek of Lyle and Amos Machacek of Austin. Three weeks ago death claimed her brother, Charles of Albert Lea.

Mrs. Moshier was a woman who was devoted to her family and loved her home, leaving them only on occasions when she might render helpful service to those afflicted or in need. Her home was ever a place of cheerful hospitality where relatives and friends delighted to frequent and who were always greeted with genuine cordiality. The deceased continued the same cheerful disposition during her weeks of illness and bore her suffering with unusual patience.

The funeral was held this afternoon with services at the home of the United Brethren Church of London with Pastor Rev. Roy Carpenter officiating. The R. N. A. of London took part in the service honoring this loved one who had membership in that organization for forty years. Burial was at Woodbury cemetery.

Ardyth Helen (Haney) Davis

1925-2008

Ardyth Helen Davis, age 82, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 27, 2008 at Grand Meadow Healthcare Center.

Ardyth was born on September 22, 1925 in Austin, to Everett K. and Helen A. (Reynolds) Haney. On April 10, 1948 she was united in marriage to Harold G. Davis in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He preceded her in death on October 25, 2000. Ardyth was a retired employee of Hormel Foods having worked there 33 years.

Ardy enjoyed camping with her husband, traveling, fishing and spending time with her family and friends. She was very gifted with her piano. In her younger years she loved being a camp host at various campgrounds. Ardy liked meeting new people. She was a great talker as well as a good listener. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.

Survivors include a son, Harold Dean Davis, Odenton, Md.; two step-children, Eldon O. Davis, Portland, Ore., Shirley Stundahl, Albert Lea; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister, Karen (Jack) Freese, Grand Meadow; brother, Everett S. (Verla) Haney, Menomonie, Wis.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Everett K. and Helen A. Haney; brother, Warner C. Haney; two sisters, Leona VanPelt and Vivian Lambertson.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Mayer Funeral Home.

Cleone Jeanette (Ulland) Goodwin

1930-2008

Cleone Jeanette Goodwin, age 78, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 27, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

She was born on February 22, 1930, in Austin, to Alvin and Evelyn (Swenson) Ulland. She graduated from Austin High School in 1948 and married Nathan K. Goodwin on June 11, 1950 at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church. They lived their entire married life on a farm in the Red Oak Grove area. A homemaker, Cleone enjoyed genealogy and wrote eight books, including one about the stained glass windows at St. Olaf Lutheran Church where she was a member for a number of years. She was a Bethel Series teacher and Sunday School teacher. A 4-H project leader, she was active in extension club and politics. Cleone was currently a member of Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Nathan Goodwin, rural Austin; two sons, Rodney Goodwin, Ames, Iowa, Jon (Patricia) Goodwin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Suzanne (Rick) Stephens, Los Angeles, Calif. and Nancy (Alan) Doucet, LaCrosse, Wis.; grandchildren, Chris (Laura) Goodwin, Ben (Heather) Goodwin, Laura (Jeremias) Sauceda, Kelly Goodwin, Michael Goodwin, Samantha (Brian) Delaney, Christine Doucet, Catherine Doucet and Patricia Doucet; great-grandchildren, Seth, Luke and Annika Sauceda and Zoe and Jackson Goodwin; two brothers, Ellsworth Ulland and Donald (Marlys) Ulland of Austin; two sisters, Carol (John) Cummings, Owatonna and Elaine (Jerry) Sievers, Portage, Mich.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Laverne and a nephew, Greg Cummings.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, rural Austin, with Rev. Gene Leiter officiating. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 4 - 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 30, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Interment is at Red Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Austin.

Stanley Lee Stephenson

1936-2008

Stanley Lee Stephenson, age 72, of rural Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 27, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

Stan was born on April 4, 1936 outside of Swaledale, Iowa, to Benjamin and Louina (Jordahl) Stephenson. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1954 and attended the University of Iowa. On November 8, 1957 he married Jane Srnec in Winona, Minnesota.

Stan worked with his father Benjamin starting in 1962 in the Federal Crop Program and remained in this occupation, as a crop insurance agent, until his death. His interests included NASCAR, building and flying radio control airplane models.

Survivors include his children, Julie Stephenson, Austin, Dennis and Ann (Tubbs) Stephenson, Austin, Karen Stephenson, Austin, William Stephenson (Jeanne Blaser), Austin, Janine (Brian) Nordland, Owatonna, Janice (Joel) Maxfield, Sparta, Wis.; grandchildren, Adam Stephenson, Caitlin Stephenson, Erik Stephenson, Joe Stephenson, Jacob Nordland, Brynn Nordland, Andy Maxfield; siblings, Lee (Mary Lou) Stephenson, Mason City, Iowa, Barbara (Fred) Haven, Riverside, Calif., Donna (Chuck) Kidder, Riverside, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Louina Stephenson; by brothers, Lyle Stephenson and Robert Stephenson; by a granddaughter, Cassandra Jane Nordland; and by in-laws, William and Eva Srnec.

Private graveside services will be held on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Grandview Cemetery south of Austin. Visitation will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. on Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home, and again on Sunday from 2 - 4 p.m. at St. Edward's Church. The casket bearers will be: Denny Stephenson, Willy Stephenson, Joel Maxfield, Brian Nordland, Adam Stephenson and Joe Stephenson.

The Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roger S. Plunkett

c1931-2008

On August 30, 2008, Roger S. Plunkett, age 77, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota and also of Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota, passed away.

Following a 16 year battle with heart disease, he begrudgingly passed, with his wife by his side. Roger worked hard his whole life serving in the United States Air Force, practicing law, working as a District Court Judge until retirement and finally operating the Extraordinary Bookseller in Rochester with his wife and son Steve.

Roger loved his family deeply and is survived by his wife H. Elizabeth Plunkett; sons, Stephen, Thomas (Chris Wangen); daughter, Katz, (Jonas Qvale); grandsons, Rory, Jack, Aleksander and Nikolai; and roughly 20 thousand volumes of books.

Jeffrey Alan Koch

1959-2008

Jeffrey Alan Koch, age 48, of Rose Creek, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 29, at the Austin Medical Center after a life-long battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

He was born on December 6, 1959 in Harvard, Illinois, the son of Edward and Carol (Luerrsen) Koch. Jeffrey graduated from the Southland High School and attended Southwest State University and Riverland Community College.

He was a member of the Austin Gem and Mineral Society, MENSA, University of Minnesota White Wings, Southside 4-H Club, Austin Art Club, Austin Eagles, Friends of the J.C. Hormel Nature Center and RADAR of Rochester. Jeff's many hobbies included collecting rocks, state souvenirs, military memorabilia, reading and traveling. He was a member of the Little Cedar Lutheran Church at Adams, Mower county, Minnesota.

Jeffrey is survived by his parents, Edward and Carol Koch, Rose Creek, Minnesota; sister, Valerie (Kenneth) Pitzen, Stacyville, Iowa; brothers: Scott Koch, Winona, Minnesota, and Bil DeLong, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held at Hoflanda Cemetery, Rose Creek. A scholarship fund has been set up in Jeffrey's name.

Marian Eunice (Ferguson)(Fitzgerald) Goodew

1917-2008

Marian Eunice Goodew, age 91, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 1, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota.

Marian was born on January 2, 1917 in Winnebago, Minnesota, to Herbert and Sarah (Groppel) Ferguson. She lived in Winnebago during her younger years and attended Winnebago Public Schools. Marian had five sisters and two brothers.

On August 24, 1935 she married Cecil Fitzgerald and gave birth to a daughter, Peggy on Nov. 26, 1936. During World War II, Marian and her family lived in California where she worked in the shipyards while her husband was at war. The family then moved to Austin where she remained. Marian later divorced Cecil and married Robert Goodew on Oct. 4, 1952.

Marian enjoyed reading books, and visiting with her family. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, Robert, until his death on August 23, 1993.

Survivors include three grandsons: Cecil (Jacky) Hatfield, Austin, Mark (Karen) Hatfield, Austin, and Allan (Wanda) Hatfield, North Branch; granddaughter, Penny Skauge, Austin; two great-grandsons: Dan and Dean; three great-granddaughters: Jennifer, Heather and Holly; two great-great-grandsons: Darrell and Eli; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend, Jim Sybilrud, Austin.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Sarah; siblings: Violet, Hazel, Mae, Bessie, Ines, Bernard and Clarence; daughter, Peggy Skauge; grandson, Eli; and great-granddaughter, Brandy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 5, 2008 at Mayer Funeral Home with Pastor Dale R. Christiansen of Crane Community Chapel officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery south of Austin.

Gertrude Lucille (Hensel) Hansen

1930-2008

Gertrude Lucille Hansen, age 78, of Rose Creek, Mower county, Minnesota, died on August 30, 2008 at Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Hayfield, Minn.

She was born June 16, 1930 in Brownsdale, Mower county, Minnesota, to Alfred and Mabel (Moyer) Hensel. She attended Austin High School and was married to Manford Hansen on January 23, 1953 at Northwood, Worth county, Iowa. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Gertrude was a housewife and mother and was the owner of Gert’s Upholstery. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, plastic canvassing, fishing, camping, reading and solving puzzles.

Gertrude is survived by her husband, Manford Hansen, Rose Creek, Minnesota; by a son, Craig (Andie) Hansen, Bloomington, Minnesota; by a daughter, Paulette Hansen and Billy Wright, Austin; by a brother, Kenneth (Vivian) Hensel, Faribault, Minnesota; and by a sister, Laurella (David) Clinnin, Easton, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and by two brothers, Walter and Roger Hensel.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 5, at Clasen-Jordan Chapel with the Reverend Norman Wahl officiating. Interment will be in the Enterprise Cemetery, Rose Creek.

Honorary bearers will be: John Jacob, Aaron Hanson, Colten Wright, Justin McNichols, Christopher McNichols, Art McNichols and Craig Hansen.

Elizabeth (Milliken) Moshier

1824-1900

OBITUARY:

At her home in this city, early Tuesday morning, December 4, 1900, Mrs. Elizabeth, widow of D. S. Moshier, aged 76 years. Her maiden name was Milliken. She was born in Westmoreland county, Penn. May 18, 1824.

She was married at Freeport May 21, 1846. They came west in 1855, reaching Woodbury creek in Lyle township June 14 and preempted the northwest quarter of section 30 where they lived until about three years ago when they moved to Austin.

Their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated in Lyle in 1896. Mr. Moshier died in this city last July 26. Mrs. Moshier has been in failing health for several years and was confined to bed for the last seven weeks. She was for the past 25 years a worthy member of the Christian church. Six children survive, two in this county, Henry in Lyle and Mrs. Margaret Glines of this city.

Funeral services will be held at the house Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment will be at Woodbury.

Henry Phillip Moshier

1850-1921

OBITUARY: Henry Phillip Moshier passed away at his home in Lyle Township, Saturday, November 27th [1920] at 9:00 p.m. aged seventy years, six months and twenty days. Through the many months of his suffering caused by a complication of diseases, he was a patient sufferer.

Henry Phillip, the eldest son of Dilazon S. and Elizabeth Milliken Moshier, was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, on May 7th 1850. At the age of five he moved with his parents to Mower county where he has made his home ever since. His parents were pioneer settlers and he like other in early life knew some of the hardships of these days.

He was married September 4th 1878 to Antonet Machacek. To this union were born five children, of whom three survive, one, Ida Etta died in infancy, the other daughter, Helen wife of Joseph Magee died six years ago.

He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife, three children, Frank, Mrs. Nina Warrington, and Emily all at home; two grandchildren, Vila Mae Magee and Ruth Arleen Warrington. He leaves also two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. M. A. Glines of Austin, Mrs. Harriet Henry of Detroit, Michigan, Isaac Moshier of Glennville, Minn., George Moshier of Seattle, Washington and Oliver P. Moshier of Mason City, Iowa.

Henry Moshier was an industrious farmer, a devoted husband, a loving father, and honest man, one who lived up to the Golden Rule, and a loyal neighbor. He was a member of Fidelity lodge No. 39, A.F.A.M. and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Funeral services under the direction of the Masons were held at the London church Tuesday November 30th. Rev. G. H. Ten Broock of Austin conducting the services. He was laid to rest at Woodbury cemetery with the words of Scripture promising a final resurrection read over his final resting place of earth.

Helen Moshier

1884-1914

OBITUARY: Helen Moshier, wife of Joseph Magee, died at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. H. Moshier in Lyle at 12:40 Friday noon after a long illness with consumption.

Helen Moshier was born at Lyle, on October, 16, 1884 and grew up in that vicinity, well liked by all who knew her. On July 15, 1910 she was married to Joseph Magee of Lyle.

Last February the family moved to Colorado Springs in hopes the climate would help her. Not getting the desired help the family moved back to Lyle in July when Mrs. Magee continued to fail.

The funeral will be held from her parents home at 1 o'clock and from the London church at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Woodbury cemetery.

She leaves father, mother, husband, a three year old daughter, a brother, Frank and two sisters Nina and Emeline.

Those who knew her speak of her as one of a lovely nature, kind and true in word and deed, and patient throughout the many months she has been afflicted with illness.

Ida Barr Moshier Rites Tuesday

Funeral services were held Tuesday in Mason City for Mrs. Perry Moshier, 66, who passed away Saturday after a long illness. She is survived by her husband and three daughters, several grandchildren, and two brothers, Wm. Barr of Mason City and Bob Barr of Oakland, CA.

Joseph K. Magee

1885-1957

OBITUARY: Joseph K. Magee was born June 27, 1885, in Lyle Township, the son of Catherine and James Magee.

On June 15, 1910, he was united in marriage with Helen E. Moshier. To this union was born one daughter. He was engaged in farming until his wife's death on Sept. 18, 1914, after which he moved to Montana where he and his brother owned and operated a drug store. He returned to Minnesota in 1922 and went to work for the American Gas Co. of Albert Lea.

One March 20, 1924, he was united in marriage with Emily L. Moshier and returned to the family farm in Lyle Township, and resided there until the time of his death on June 21, 1957. To this union was born one daughter and two sons.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge AF&AM 39; served on the Dist. 14 School Board for over 20 years; was an active participant in community affairs.

He is survived by his wife, Emily of Austin Rt. 3; two daughters Mrs. C. S. Warrington (Vila), Pasadena, Calif. and Mrs. John Goslee (Evelyn), London, Minn.; two sons, Richard, Austin Rt. 3, and Kenneth, Austin; nine grandchildren, six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Funeral services were held on June 24, 1957, at 2 p.m. at the Jordan Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Wendland, Austin, officiating. Interment was at Woodbury Cemetery with Fidelity Lodge 39, A.F. & A.M. in charge of Masonic rites at the grave.

Frank Dilazon Moshier

1880-1958

OBITUARY: Frank Dilazon Moshier was born March 8, 1880 in London Township, Freeborn County, the son of Henry and Antonet Machacek Moshier. He attended the rural schools in Mower County, and in later years, he was clerk of School Dist. 14.

He lived on his farm for many years until he moved to Austin about 20 years ago. He resided in Austin until a year and a half ago when he moved to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Arden Busse, Highway 218 South.

He was a member of Fidelity Lodge 39, A.F.&A.M. for many years.

After a brief illness he passed away at St. Olaf Hospital, Wednesday evening, Nov. 5, 1958, at the age of 78 years.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Heiny Sr. (Nina) and Mrs. Emily Magee, Austin; three nieces, Mrs. Cedric Warrington, Pasadena, Calif.; Mrs. Leonard Heiny Jr. and Mrs. John Goslee, Austin; two nephews, Richard and Kenneth Magee, Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ida, in infancy and Mrs. Helen Magee in 1914.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 8, 1958, at 2 p.m. at the Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. George C. Bergland officiating. Interment was at Woodbury Cemetery with Fidelity Lodge 39 A.F.&A.M. in charge of Masonic rites.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Learned, soloists, sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset." Bearers were Vance Hotson, Lee Machacek, Glenn Machacek, Roy Scheffle, Homer Warrington and Glenn Helgeson.

Relatives attending were from the London, Lyle and Austin vicinities and Mr. Luther Aasgaard, Minneapolis.

Emily (Moshier) Mcgee

1896-1986

OBITUARY: Emily L. Magee, 89, St. Mark's Apartments, was born October 16, 1896, at Lyle Township. She was the daughter of Henry and Antonette Moshier.

She resided at Route 3, Austin, until 1961, when she moved to 1409 4th Ave. SW, Austin, then to St. Mark's Apartments in 1985.

She attended School District No. 14 and Southern Minnesota Business College.

On March 20, 1924, she married Joseph K. Magee in Austin.

She was a member of Woodbury Willing Workers, Cedar City Aid, Unity Chapter No. 29, OES, Merry Widows Club. She belonged to Silver Maple Extension Unit, and was a public nurse volunteer.

Mrs. Magee died May 17, 1986, at 7 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Cedric (Vila) Warrington, LaCanada, Calif; Mrs. Evelyn Goslee, Glenville, Minn; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Darlean Magee, Austin; Kenneth and Patricia Magee, Austin; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents, two sisters, Helen and Nina; a brother, Frank; a son-in-law.

Funeral service was held May 20, 1986, at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Rev. S. Mark Garrison officiated. Mrs. Ben King was soloist and Barbara Hays, organist. Pallbearers were Keith Goslee, Dwight Goslee, Larry Goslee, Dlae Magee, David Magee, Kirk Magee. Interment was in Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, Minn. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte Frances (Kriz) Lien

1920-2008

Charlotte Frances Lien, age 88, formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Tuesday morning, September 2, 2008 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.

She was born on April 20, 1920 to Franklin and Hanna (Jorgenson) Kriz in Austin, where she grew up and attended school.

She married Roland Lien in 1959 in Albert Lea, Freeborn county, Minnesota. They made their home in Austin before moving to Sarasota, Florisa. Roland died in 1994. After 25 years in Florida, Charlotte returned to Minnesota in 2002, making her home in Rochester at the Golden Living Center.

Survivors include children: Gary (Janith) Corkill, Austin, Karen (Harvey) Cotten, Rochester, Colleen (Homer) Williams, St. Paul, Jeannie (Richard) Sladky, Lombard, Ill., Steven Shaman, Baton Rouge, La., and Cheryl (Michael) Ouellette, St. Charles, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland; her parents; and her sister, Doris Schroeder.

Graveside services were held on Friday, September 5, 2008 at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery, with the Reverend Robert Stohlman officiating. Worlein Funeral Home in Austin was in charge of arrangements.

Darhld Donald Dimmel, age 89, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 2, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa.

He was born on May 19, 1919 to Henry and Ida (Schroeder) Dimmel in rural Waseca, Minnesota.

He married Edna Mae Schneider on October 31, 1939 in Elysian, Minnesota. They made their home in Austin until moving to Bella Vista, Arkansas. In 2000, they returned to Austin and later moved to Northwood, Iowa. Darhld was employed by Hormel Foods Corp. for 39 years. A lifelong member of Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, he belonged to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Austin, where he retained a lifetime membership of American Legion Post 91.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Donald (Karen) Dimmel, Prescott, Arizona; three daughters: Judith (Larry) Jorgensen, Northwood, Iowa, Daralyn (Mark) Bobbitt, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Kathryn (Donald) Yous, Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; four brothers: Elmer (Marilyn) Dimmel, Austin, Ross Dimmel, Seattle, Washington, Loren Dimmel, St. Peter, Minnesota, and Earl Dimmel, Faribault, Minnesota; two sisters, Myrles (Donald) Ferch, Austin, and Belva Brown, Faribault.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Edna, in 2005; his brother, Victor; his sister, Helen Keep, and by his parents.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Reverend Jon Bitter officiating. Worlein Funeral Home in Austin is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery, south of Austin with military honors by American Legion Post 91.

Iven DeSart, 40, a trucker at Elkton, died following a heart attack Tuesday night. Mr. DeSart had gone to a garage in Elkton to sharpen a pair of ice skates for his children when he suffered the attack.

IVEN LE ROY DeSart

Iven Le Roy DeSart was born in Des Moines, Iowa, October 12, 1906. He was adopted by Mr.and Mrs. J.E. DeSart in January, 1907 from the Des Moines orphanage at the age of three months.

He spent his childhood on a farm in Iowa with his parents. At the age of eight they moved to Montana and after two years returned to Iowa and made their home at Lavinia. In 1920 the family moved to Minnesota. They have since lived near Dexter and in Elkton. Mr. DeSart attended school in Iowa and Minnesota.

Dec. 12, 1926 he was united in marriage to Miss Leona Rabine. To this home came four children; Lois Yvonne, Everett LeRoy, Audrey Lou and Donna Mae.

For a number of years they farmed until 1934 when the family moved to St. Paul where he worked for the Seeger Refrigerator Co. and the Northern States Power Co. In 1937 he and his family moved back to Elkton and he has since operated a trucking business.

He was baptized and joined the Dexter Methodist church in 1943 He was a member of the Masonic lodge.

He passed away Tuesday evening, Dec. 31, 1946, as the result of a heart attack. He had reached the age of 40 years.

He is survived by his four children, his wife and his parents. Many other friends and relatives have been shocked by his sudden passing. He will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services were held January 4, 1947, at 2 o'clock at the Dexter Methodist church. Rev. F.L. DeCourcy officiated. The Grand Meadow Masonic lodge had their graveside services. Burial was in the Dexter cemetery.

Lucille (Sogge) Nelson

1924-2008

Lucille Nelson, age 83, formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd on September 4, 2008.

She was born September 12, 1924 in Isle, Minnesota, to Eddie and Sophie (Twait) Sogge. She grew up in southern Minnesota and attended school in Lyle, graduating from Lyle High School in 1942. She volunteered at the Austin Hospital before her marriage to Morris Nelson on Dec. 25, 1942 in Lyle. They made their home in Onamia, Lyle, Chatfield, Austin, Anoka and Crosslake. After Morris retired in 1982, they wintered in St. Cloud, Florida.

Morris passed away on Dec. 24, 2005. Lucille enjoyed her family & friends, traveling, painting, gardening, shopping, houseboating & fishing.

Dale Raymond Renchin

1940-2008

Dale Raymond Renchin, age 68, died on September 3, 2008 at his home in rural Austin, Mower county, Minnesota.

He was born on April 4, 1940 to Raymond and Delores (Severson) Renchin in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, where he grew up and graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 1959. He worked for Associated Grocers in Blooming Prairie.

He married Florence Ryks in 1959. They were later divorced. In 1968 Dale went to work in the case ready pork department at Hormel Foods Corp. He married Mary Merritt on Aug. 26, 1972 in Austin. He retired in May of 2003. A member of the Blooming Prairie Gun Club, Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering with things and taking care of his yard. He did the mowing at Udolpho Cemetery for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, rural Austin; children, Cory (Beth) Renchin, Chicago, Ill., Casey (Jess) Renchin, Hollandale, Kyle Renchin, Austin, Gina (Tom) Lenaghan, Nevada, Iowa, Kim Renchin, Wichita, Kansas, Lisa (Craig) Fraser, Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Delores Renchin, Hayfield; a sister, Ann (Tom) Noble, Stewartville; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jim and Diane Merritt, Austin, Don and Sue Anderson, Elkton, Patty and Sonny Forschen, Andover, Terry and Nancy Grunwald, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his father.

DEXTER, MN -- Owen A. Jacobsen, age 75, of Dexter, Mower county, Minnesota, died Sunday morning, April 9, 2006, at Field Crest Care Center, Hayfield, Minnesota.

Owen Anders Jacobsen was born Dec. 19, 1930, the son of Nicholas and Fanny (Pedersen) Jacobsen in Rochester, Minnesota. He attended grade school in Dexter, Minnesota, and graduated from Austin High School. Owen attended the Iowa State University and Hamlin University. He was a Boiler Engineer for creameries and hotels. Owen was united in marriage to Vonda Lee Ames on October 29, 1969, in Sioux Falls, S.D. His hobbies were model railroading and reading.

John Henry Freese Jr.

1944-2008

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- The funeral for John H. Freese Jr. will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, south of Austin.

Mr. Freese, age 64, of Owatonna, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at his home.

John Henry Freese Jr. was born May 19, 1944, in rural Austin. He attended school in Brownsdale and Rose Creek and was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He enjoyed visiting his family for Sunday dinner, listening to gospel and country western music, particularly Johnny Cash. He especially loved to be around children.

Survivors include four sisters, Rose (Cecil) Haskin of Denver, Iowa, Peggy Batdorf and Joyce Chapek, both of Albert Lea, and Pearl Ferguson of Austin; five brothers, Jacob (Karen) of Grand Meadow, Frank of Austin, Joe (Betty) of Minneapolis, Raymond of Austin and Ward (Sue) of Blooming Prairie; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruby (Truhlar) Freese; and a brother, Elmer.

Visitation will be an hour before the service at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Vivian (Seeman) Griffel

1921-2008

GRAND MEADOW, MINNESOTA -- The funeral for Vivian Griffel will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Church of Grand Meadow, with the Rev. Karen Ashton officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Mrs. Griffel, 87, of Grand Meadow, died Monday (Sept. 1, 2008) at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center, where she had resided briefly.

Vivian Seemann was born March 29, 1921, in Webb, Iowa. She attended Webb School for 12 years, graduating in 1939. On Dec. 25, 1942, she married Milton Griffel at her home in rural Grand Meadow. They lived with Mr. Griffel's mother and brother for three years because his father had died. The couple then moved to a rented farm nearby for one year, resided for three years in Ellsworth, Iowa, and bought a home in Grand Meadow in 1950. They began farming in 1951.

Because of Mr. Griffel's health, they had to stop farming in 1980. Mrs. Griffel then bought a home in Grand Meadow so she could care for her husband. She belonged to the United Church of Grand Meadow, Clayton Farm Bureau and the ladies aide.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Wayne) Gehling of Grand Meadow. Other survivors include a son-in-law, Dennis (Susan) Kreid and family of Richland, Wash.; four grandsons, Tyler (Becky) Gehling, Ryan (Shannon) Gehling, Jacob Gehling and Jered (Katie) Gehling; and two great-grandsons, Mitchel and Keaton. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sherilyn Kreid; and three brothers, Wilbur, Lee and Waldron "Chris."

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Grand Meadow, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church.

Dorothy E. (Schaefer) Schlichter

1924-2008

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- The funeral Mass for Dorothy E. Schlichter will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Austin, with the Rev. Joe Fogal officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Austin, Mower county, Minnesota.

Mrs. Schlichter, age 84, of Austin, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the Austin Medical Center.

Dorothy Elizabeth Schaefer was born August 3, 1924, in Lodi Township, Mower County, Minnesota. On September 5, 1945, she married Theodore Schlichter at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. He preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2008.

A homemaker, Mrs. Schlichter enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, playing cards, and most of all being with her family. She also enjoyed her mother's club (Baker's Dozen) for more than 50 years, as well as volunteering at church.

She is survived by six sons, Robert (JoAnn) of Elk River, Minn., James (Mary Jo) of Austin, Ted of Preston, Steve (Cindy) and Tom, both of Austin, and Eugene (Sue) of Anoka, Minn.; four daughters, Mary Erickson of Owatonna, Carol Karjala of Hastings, Minn., Linda (Roger) Hahn of Hayfield and Janet (Scott) Gaboury of Blue Bell, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Whalen and Helen (Jack) Sershen, both of Austin; and three brothers, Sy Schaefer, Wilfred "Bill" Schaefer and Bernard (Pat) Schaefer, all of Austin. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Barb Schlichter; two sons-in-law, Gary Erickson and Howard Karjala; two brothers, Ray Schaefer and Leo Schaefer; and a sister, Rosemary Danley.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin, and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service Monday at the funeral home.

Margaret Christina (Schaefer) Whalen

1922-2008

Margaret Christina (Schaefer) Whalen, age 85, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 7, 2008 at her home surrounded by her family.

Margaret was on born November 4, 1922 in Taopi, Mower county, Minnesota, to Joseph and Celestine Schaefer. On August 9, 1944 she was united in marriage to Leslie I. Whalen at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1972. Margaret worked a short time at Hormel Foods, at Klagge's Ice Cream Shop and she was a waitress at the Austin Moose Lodge.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, making rag rugs and a variety of crafts, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children: Donald (Karen) Whalen, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Duane (Jeanne) Whalen, Ely, Susan (Harry) Davis, Austin, Aletha (Leo) Coyle, Austin, Kevin (Della) Whalen, LeRoy, and Michael (Saralyn) Whalen, Austin; grandchildren: Jeffrey Whalen, Kimberly Bundy, Craig Whalen, Paul Davis, Jeremy Davis, Christopher Coyle, Travis Coyle, David Whalen, Patrick Whalen, Joshua Whalen, Phillip Whalen, Ellie Quam, Mitchell Whalen and Eric Whalen; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings: Sy Schaefer, Austin, Wilfred "Bill" Schaefer, Austin, Helen (Jack) Sershen, Austin, and Bernard (Pat) Schaefer, Austin.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Paul in 1970; by her parents, Joseph and Celestine Schaefer; and by four siblings: Raymond Schaefer, Leo Schaefer, Dorothy Schlichter and Rosemary Danley.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be CCW rosary and a wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

The honorary casket bearers will be: Kimberly Bundy, Jeremy Davis, Travis Coyle, Patrick Whalen, Joshua Whalen, Phillip Whalen, Ellie Quam and Eric Whalen. The casketbearers will be: Jeffrey Whalen, Paul Davis, Christopher Coyle, David Whalen, Mitchell Whalen and Craig Whalen.

Willis E. Hertle

1921-2008

Willis E. Hertle, age 87, of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died on September 6, 2008 at Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield, Minnesota.

He was born on February 7, 1921 in Red Rock Township, Minnesota to Henry and Sena (Ryks) Hertle. He attended country school in Mower County. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WW II from 1942 to 1945.

He married Elinor Kraft on April 20 1946 at St. Johns Lutheran Church Parsonage in Austin. Willis worked for the George A. Hormel Company for over 40 years and retired in 1982. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Austin Moose and Eagles clubs.

He enjoyed camping, woodworking, and the 14 years he and Elinor wintered in Mesa, Arizona. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Willis is survived by his wife, Elinor Hertle, Austin; daughter, Sharon (Larry) Sparks, Sargeant, Minnesota; granddaughter, Lori (William) Douglas, Eagan, Minnesota; great-granddaughter, Lauren Douglas; great-grandson, Will Douglas; brothers, Everett "Bud" Hertle, Austin, Lawrence "Larry" Hertle, Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister, Florence (Earl) Hagstrom, Brownsdale, Minnesota; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Lynn Hertle and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Todd Portinga, AiM officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Cemetery south of Austin. The organist will be Neal Erickson with soloist Holly Newman. Military rites will be done by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 216. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements.

The casket bearers will be Randy Hamilton, Ron Hamilton, Russ Hamilton, Norman Hagstrom, Rodger Hagstrom and Terry Plath. Honorary bearers will be Lauren and Will Douglas.

Marguerite Louise (Peterson)
Furtney

1915-2008

Marguerite Furtney, age 93, and formerly of Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, died at South Shore Care Center in Worthington, Minnesota, on Thursday evening, September 11, 2008.

Marguerite Louise Peterson was born on February 17, 1915 to Jul and Martha (Kulsrud) Peterson in Austin, Minnesota. She graduated from Austin High School in 1932.

On August 31, 1935, she married Ferris Furtney at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Marguerite worked in the Hormel office for 10 years.

> She and Ferris were long-time members of First United Methodist Church. Marguerite loved history, culture and reading. A member of Art and Travel Club, the Symphony Study Group, “Y” Matrons and many other civic organizations; attending the Concert Series was always one of her favorites. She loved to entertain and set a beautiful party table. She loved being with people and was always on the go.

Going in the motorhome was something she liked, but she would never admit it. Flowers were her passion; she loved to grow and decorate with them. Having coffee with her friends was a must, but her family always came first. Her caretaker and nurses said she was great to care for, and they all described her as a real lady. Her favorite word for all the nurses was “pipsqueak.”

Survivors include two sons, Roy (Susie) Furtney, Austin, Minnesota, David (Sandy) Furtney, Kenosha, Wisconsin; a daughter, Shauna (Michael) Brignac, Worthington, Minnesota; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Davidson, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jul and Matilda Peterson; by her husband Ferris on August 5, 2002; by three brothers: Vernon, Harold and Robert Peterson; by a sister, Katherine Torkelson.

Funeral services will be private for the family, with Pastor Patricia Toschak officiating, and interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. The Worlein Funeral Home in Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Glines

1843-1905

Edward B. Glines died this morning at his home at 1002 Grove street of heart trouble. He was thought to be in his usual health but when his wife called him this morning he did not respond. She called again and receiving no answer went to his bedside and found him dead.

He was sixty-two years, two months old today. He was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, September 9, 1843. Here he grew to manhood. His mother died when he was eighteen year old. He came west settling in Freeborn county in 1860. His marriage to Maggie McCabe occurred October 13, 1889. He leaves beside a wife, one son Bennie, 15 years of age.

Those who knew the deceased speak in praise of him. He was a good husband, father and neighbor and though poor health had stood in his way of accomplishment he did what he could and made the best of circumstances which he could not alter.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock from the home of Mrs. Porter on Sixth street.
