A Eulogy:

"Polly Jelinek and Vonda Ames"

by Polly Jelinek

It was inevitable that we become friends. Our grandmothers were friends. Our mothers were friends. And so we, too, were friends.

Growing up in the neighborhood and going to southeast Austin's Whittier School from kindergarten through fifth grade cemented this friendship between Vonda Ames and me. We were very fortunate to have the best teachers in the school system. Unfortunately, they were the best observers of how kids operated. For the most part, we were in the same classrooms, but soon the teacher became aware of how we operated and, sometimes, we were separated.

Secret signals, dropping a book, sneezing, biting a lip until it bled and then putting a tissue to our nose indicating a bloody nose were just some of our ploys to get out of the classroom. Every time something happened that caused a break in the routine, everyone always looked at the two of us. Because of the fact that there were too many students going to Whittier, our class was sent to Central (Austin High School) for sixth grade, and we stayed there through graduation.

Polly Jelinek & Vonda Ames (Jacobsen)
As we grew older, we weren't allowed to share the same homeroom or basic classes but we managed to share lunch for sure. Mostly egg salad sandwiches from home, and we traded other favorites. Vonda and I walked in the corridors between classes, met in the library (supposedly to do research) and shared the giggles when her underwear elastic broke and she had to hide behind a hall door until the bell rang and she could dash to the girls lavatory to pin them up.

After high school, we went our separate ways -- Vonda to marriage, travel and children; and I became an educational facilitator. I figured that with all the experience I had in trying to outwit the teachers, I would be a good candidate to facilitate, plus the fact of experiencing the best of the best to show me the way. Vonda and I kept in touch by mail, phone and photographs over the years, and even had the long distance baby showers to keep us in touch.

After some time, Vonda returned to the old hometown to live, and we enjoyed seeing and doing things together again. It was interesting in that Vonda and her children rented one of the apartments in the big apartment house I grew up in and they lived there for a while.

Over the years, we tracked each other and kept in touch. When she moved to Dexter, people there knew me and kept me informed. She eventually ended up at the same hairdresser as me and we left messages for each other with the hairdresser. We were there for each other in good and bad times. As the years passed, our hair changed color by itself, the high heels changed to sandals or loafers, and we didn't worry about nylons or skirts but rather enjoyed jeans and sweatshirts.

My memories with my friend Vonda have been on my mind a lot this summer, especially after Vonda passed away. Our lunches together stand out as one of my favorite memories because we reminisced about our life experiences and how we both felt satisfied with the way they had turned out. Not as the rich and famous, but as the content and friendly.
