Marjorie M. Epley, 77, of Stewartville, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota and Rochester, Minnesota, died on September 13, 2007, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Marjorie Bohn was born on March 12, 1930, in Austin, Minnesota.

She was married on June 19, 1948 to Guy Epley, in Austin. Both she and her husband were employed by IBM. She was a buyer, and Mr. Epley was a programmer. She had resided in Stewartville for eight months and prior to that spent 15 years in Sun City, Arizona. From 1985 to 1992, Mrs. Epley and her husband traveled extensively in their Airstream. Her husband passed away on April 12, 2004.

Survivors include three sons: Dennis (Sandy) of Madison, Wisconsin, Douglas of Scottsdale, Arizona, and DeWayne (Gwen) of Acworth, Georgia; a daughter, Dawn (Steve) Hopkins of Stewartville; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dar (Norm) Ronning of Sun City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and a granddaughter.

Florence L. Albright, 93, of LeRoy, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 24, 2007, at LeRoy Supportive Living Services.

Florence was born on May 11, 1914, in Rose Creek, Minnesota. In 1915 she had meningitis. Florence lived at the Faribault State Hospital, Jacobs Rest Home and Burr Oak Nursing Home. She currently resided at LeRoy Supportive Living Services with her housemates, Josie, Betty and Liz, and all the caring staff that worked with her. Florence loved animals, children, baby dolls, shopping, stringing beads and everything red.

Florence was preceded in death by her father, Jack Albright; by her mother, Anna May Albright; and by seven siblings: Francis, Thomas, Joseph, Elsie, Hazel, Marie and Edward.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 28, 2007, at Mayer Funeral Home, in Austin. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

 

Helen Carey Ulwelling was born in Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa, on March 20, 1924, to Horace and Cecilia Carey, of Austin. She graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1942. She graduated from Benner State College of Cosmetology in 1945. After her graduation she owned and operated Carey Beauty Salon, in Austin.

On July 12, 1948, Helen married Charles "Chuck" Ulwelling, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, in Bellflower, California. Chuck, the son of Louis and Kate Ulwelling, was formerly from Austin. During her lifetime, Helen attended Cerritos College for floral arranging. Her hobbies included floral arranging, arts, crafts and bead work. She was a member of the St. John of God Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Erin (Tom) Chapman, Grand Junction, Colorado; by her sons, Cary (Sandy) Ulwelling, San Clemente, California, and Brice (Eileen) Ulwelling, Orange, California; by her sisters: Charlene (Edward) Young, Austin, Velma (Tom) Strange, Fremont, Nebraska, Mary (Marvin) Winkles, LeRoy, Minnesota, Cela (Tom) Winjum, Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Rosemary (Keith) Price, Rose Creek, Minnesota; by brothers, Bernard (Gayle) Carey, Austin, Minn., David (Mary) Carey, Minneapolis, Minnesota; by a sister-in-law, Leona Walburn; by a brother-in-law, Bernard (Vera) Ulwelling; and by grandchildren, Thomas and Travis Chapman and Amy and Gary Ulwelling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Cecilia Carey; by her husband, Charles; by her sisters, Margaret Butler and Magdaline Clance; by her brother, Horace Carey; by brothers-in-law: John Ulwelling Sr., Matthew Ulwelling and Paul Ulwelling.

 

Francis L. Nelson, 93, of Lyle, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 24, 2007, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. He was born on March 1, 1914, in Norma, North Dakota, the son of Hans W. and Agnes R. (Petersen) Nelson. He was baptized on Sept. 8, 1914. His early days were spent in Haynes, North Dakota. As a young man, Francis was employed at the Co-op Oil Station in Kenmare, North Dakota.

On September 6, 1936 he married Esther Fahje at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kenmare. In March of 1938, they moved to Minnesota to farm in the Lyle area for the remainder of his married life. As an adult, he took instruction in the Lutheran faith and was confirmed by Pastor T.G. Torvik at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle on April 10, 1949. Francis and Esther made the move from their farm, to a home in Lyle, in April, 1976. That didn't keep him from taking an active part in the planting and harvesting of crops with his son, Roger, and grandson, Joel, until Francis was 90 years old.

Esther passed away in 2002. Francis entered the Good Samaritan Center at St. Ansgar, Iowa in July of 2006, where he had many special friends on the staff.

He is survived by his children: Shirley (Nels) Golberg, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Jean Nelson, Lyle, Minn.; Roger (Marjorie) Nelson, Lyle; Lois (Ronald) Peters, Austin; by nine grandchildren; by 19 great-grandchildren; by three great-great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Irene Fahje, Lyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Esther; and by a sister, Shirley Bengtson.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 27, 2007, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle, with The Reverend Barbara Finley-Shea officiating.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, at Worlein Funeral Home, in Austin, and at the church for one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Woodbury Cemetery, rural Lyle, Minnesota.

 

Delores J. Barnett, 84, of New Hope, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died on September 21, 2007, at the Northridge Care Center in New Hope.

Delores was born June 28, 1923 in Oelwein, Iowa, to Frank J. and Cora E. (Bond) Sherwood. She was a retired employee of Hormel Foods.

Survivors include her children: Larry Engelmann, San Jose, California, Colleen Engelmann, Lonsdale, Minnesota, Michael (Nancy) Engelmann, Andover, Minnesota, Mary (John) Murphy, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Julie (Paul) Wacker, Plymouth, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Cleda Blumenrader, Spring Park, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley Engelmann; by her second husband, James Barnett; by her brother, Jerry Sherwood; and by a sister, Helen Foster.

Private family services were held on Thursday afternoon, September 27, 2007. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements were by Mayer Funeral Home.

 

Kom Khamsa, 77, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 20, 2007, at his home. He was born on September 19, 1930, to Tha and Deang Khamsa, in Sayaboury, Laos, where he grew up.

He married Peng Khamsa in 1958 in Laos. Kom worked hard as a farmer to support his family. He and his family moved to Thailand in 1975. Because of the war in Laos, he raised his family in Thailand, in a refugee camp. In August 1987 Kom moved to the United States. They made their home in Stockton, California, where Kom attended adult school to learn English. After 25 years they moved to Minnesota in 2002, making their home in Austin. He was a farmer his entire life.

Survivors include his wife, Peng Khamsa, Austin; six children: Souk Khamsa, Austin, Joey Khamsa, Austin; To (Dao) Khamsa, Webster City, Iowa; Kham (Chanh Sudjaidee) Khamsa, Stockton, California; Boun (Chan Heaung) Khamsa, Stockton; and Chan Khamsa, Stockton. Kom had 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by one brother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin, with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

 

Dorothy Ann Goodmanson, 77, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 22, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

Dorothy was born on January 3, 1930, in Fertile, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Cora (Revland) Halvorson. She graduated from high school in 1947 and attended the North Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She was married to Lloyd Goodmanson on December 12, 1950, in Fertile, Iowa.

The mother of three, Dorothy worked for many years in clothing sales at Fantles and Leutholds, in Austin, where she could use her eye for design and her love of color and fine fabrics. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, she participated in circle and worked with the quilters. She also served as chairman of the “Helping Hands” for several years, coordinating funeral receptions.

Dorothy was an accomplished musician in her early years, and she won a national award in clarinet performance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, Lloyd; and by a sister who died at birth.

She is survived by her children: Brian and Marcia Goodmanson, Rochester, Minnesota; Lynn and Nels Peterson, Park Rapids, Minnesota; Gary Goodmanson, Austin; by five grandchildren: Paul and Erik Goodmanson, Christopher and Jon Peterson, and Evan Goodmanson; and by sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene Ingebritson, Lake Mills, Iowa, and Laurie and Gene Smit, Sheffield, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin, Minnesota. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Edward Zrucky, 92, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 23, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Edward Richard Zrucky was born April 14, 1915, in Austin, the son of Franz “Frank” and Augusta (Pekarek) Zrucky. He was baptized at St. Augustin’s Catholic Church and confirmed at Holy Cross Lutheran Church as a child. He attended school in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1933.

On February 28, 1939, he was united in marriage to Violet Ruth Andersen in Hampton, Iowa. He worked as an auto mechanic at several local shops including Park Motors, Sherman Garage, Zrucky Garage, and later owned and operated Zrucky’s South Main Shell service station, retiring in 1977. He was an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, serving on the building committee, as a trustee, a choir member and as an auditing committee member. Violet died on Aug. 13, 1991.

Edward is survived by three sons: Dale (Darla) Zrucky, Austin; David (Haruko) Zrucky, Chula Vista, California; and Ozzie (Julie) Zrucky, Austin; by seven grandchildren: Dan Zrucky, Darcy (Marty) Johnson, Dean Zrucky, Jeff Zrucky, Ben Zrucky, Nick Zrucky and Michelle Zrucky; by three great-grandchildren: Karlee, Kayla and Mitchell Johnson; by one sister, Ella Berg, Austin; and by a special friend, Hazel Hinz, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Violet; by three brothers: Joe, Jim and Frank Zrucky; and by two sisters, Mary Peterson, and Agnes Quinn.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with Rev. Daniel Provost officiating. Interment followed the service in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, September 24, 2007 at the Worlein Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

 

Helen A. Ronne, 89, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, died on September 22, 2007, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

Helen Amelia Kindler was born September 8, 1918, in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, to William and Anna (Felber) Kindler. She attended Rush Lake School of Blue Earth County and Graduated from Mankato Commercial College. Helen worked very hard for the Blue Earth Poor Farm, and later, for Swanson’s Wallpaper and Paint.

On Aug. 29, 1940, Helen married Jesse Ronne at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato. In March 1941, they moved from Mankato to the family farm in Grand Meadow. Helen was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Luther Church, in Austin. She belonged to the ladies aide and neighborhood birthday club.

She is survived by her husband Jesse, Grand Meadow; by a daughter, Rebecca (Jim) Bissen, Rosecreek, Minnesota; by a son, Wayne (Joanne) Ronne, Grand Meadow; by eight grandchildren: Amy, Tricia, Andy, Brian, Valerie, Darin, Jennifer and Ashley; by three great-grandchildren: Colin, Caitlin and Max; by a loyal friend, Roger Julson, Dexter, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by a son, Gary; and by a granddaughter, Annette.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bob Seifert of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Roger D. Kamp, 67, of Forest City, Iowa, died on September 22, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, in Mason City, Iowa.

Roger Duane Kamp, the son of Vernon Henry and Mildred Louise (Steile) Kamp, was born July 24, 1940, in Austin, Minnesota. He attended the rural schools near Brownsdale, Minnesota. Roger served his country in the Army, and was stationed in Germany.

On Nov. 27, 1965, he married Virginia Mary Earl at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Austin. They lived in Forest City, Iowa, where Roger was employed at Winnebago Industries for 35 years, retiring in January 2001.

Gilbert John Smith, age 82, of Stacyville, Mitchell County, Iowa, died on September 21, 2007, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Gilbert was born on October 27, 1924, in Stacyville, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Krebsbach) Smith. He attended St. John’s Catholic School in Johnsburg. Gilbert spent his life on the family farm, where he was engaged in farming. He was very interested in animal husbandry, especially in the raising of cattle. He was a lifelong member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Johnsburg.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; by two sisters, Martha Smith Jax, and Margaret Smith; and by three brothers: Nicholas, Gregory, and Ray Smith.

He is survived by Brothers and sisters-in-law: Leo and Stella Smith, Stacyville, Iowa; Bernard Smith, Stacyville; and Gerwin A. and Florence Smith, Mitchell, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 24, 2007, at St. Johns Catholic Church, in Johnsburg, Minnesota, with Father James Seitz officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

Leo M. "Red" Rauen, 92, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 19, 2007.

Leo was born on August 4, 1915, in Adams, Minnesota, to Phillip and Katie (Heimer) Rauen; where he was raised as well.

On May 25, 1937, he married Viola Vogt. Leo worked at Hormel for 36 years, retiring in 1978.

Survivors include his 11 children: Jeannine (Russell) Birk, Carolyn (Gayland) Huber, Celesta Klapperick, Raymond (Carol) Rauen, Janice (John) Palmeri, Linda (Jim) Ivanic, Rosemary (Dana) LaFrance, Leann (Richard) Jacobson, Philip (Lori) Rauen, Sandy (Mark) Auringer, Thomas (Diann) Rauen; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe Rauen; and sisters, Gert Loecher and Margaret Severson.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Viola on November 25, 1983; by his parents; by five brothers; by five sisters; by a son-in-law, Linus; by grandchildren, Mindy and Philip III; and by a great-grandson, William.

A funeral mass was celebrated on Sunday, September 23, 2007, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There was a wake service on Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota.

 

Jack Guyette, 82, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 18, 2007, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, Minnesota. He was born on March 25, 1925, to Jack V. and Mary S. (Denning) Guyette, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He graduated from Faribault School for the Deaf. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jack was employed by Hormel Foods for over 40 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Moose Club and American Legion.

Survivors include six children: James (Iris) Guyette, Red Hook, New York; Mary Guyette, Austin; Gerald Guyette, Austin; Steven Guyette, Eden Prairie; Wayne (DeAnne) Guyette, Austin; Cindy (James) Rernert, Champlin; 14 grandchildren; and a former wife, Kathleen Guyette, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mary Guyette.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 22, 2007, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. The Worlein Funeral Home, in Austin, was in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in Grandview Cemetery, south of Austin.

 

DeLores M. Novak, 78 of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died early Thursday evening, September 20, 2007 at Austin Medical Center.

DeLores was born on October 17, 1928 to Anton and Hazel (Hyland) Klouse, in Austin, Minnesota. DeLores was baptized in Austin, and when she was two years old, the family moved to a small farm near St. Ansgar, Iowa. A year later they moved back to Minnesota. Her dad farmed, and the family belonged to Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church near Lyle, where DeLores was confirmed.

After she graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1947, she began work at Geo. A. Hormel & Company. She married Duane Grimley in 1952, and they were later divorced. DeLores married Francis Novak on June 13, 1970. He died on June 9, 1977. DeLores retired from Hormel in 1988, after 41 years with the company.

A member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, she was very active in Eagle's Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Doug Cranston) Snyder, Rochester, Minnesota; by two sons, Michael (Kathy) Grimley, Austin, Minnesota, Steven Grimley, Austin, Minnesota; by seven grandchildren: Troy (Andrea) Snyder, Ryan Snyder, Michael Grimley, Jr., Kellie Grimley, Josh Grimley, Justin Matthews, and Logan Grimley; by one great-grandson, Quinton Grimley; by four brothers: Richard (Debbie) Klouse, Sarcoxie, Missouri; Clifford (Clarabel) Klouse, Creston, Illinois; Marvin (Mavis) Klouse, Austin, Minnesota; and Ervin Klouse, Mason City, Iowa.

DeLores was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Anton Klouse, and by her husbands, Duane Grimley and Francis Novak.

Herman Max William Klaehn, 84, of Taopi, Mower County, Minnesota, died on Friday, September 21, 2007 at the Adams Health Care Center, Adams, Minnesota.

Herman was born on November 28, 1922 near Elkton, Minnesota, the son of Frank and Irene (Rothenburger) Klaehn. He graduated from the Elkton High School.

He married Dorothy Mae Rolf on June 3, 1945 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Elkton. They farmed in the Elkton area until 1950 when they moved to a farm near Taopi where he resided until entering the assisted living area of the Adams Health Care Center. Herman was a lifetime member of the St. John's Lutheran Church.

Herman is survived by a son, Bryan (Teri) Klaehn, Adams, Minnesota; by a daughter, Linda (Ronald) Sample, Chatfield, Minnesota; by five grandchildren: Ronda Fishbaugher, Michael Sample, Stephanie Murphy, Stacey Klaehn, Emily Olson; by six great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Lillian Grundmeier, Sandstone, Minnesota, and Louise Littlefield, Elkton, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 1984, and by brothers, Freddie and Emil.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 24, 2007 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elkton, Minnesota, with the Rev. Liz Erickson officiating. Burial was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs. Eliza Hart Dennis died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lewis, 1006 West Oakland avenue, Monday morning, May first, 1922, after suffering a severe stroke of paralysis.

Eliza Hart was born December 29, 1839, at Liverpool, England. At the age of eighteen she came to America with her parents, residing for a time in Wisconsin. Later she came to live in Austin, Minn., where in 1884 she was married to Isaac M. Dennis of Waltham. After several years residence near Waltham they moved to Lansing where they lived until the death of her husband in 1915. No children were born to the union, but she proved herself to be a good mother in the care and love she bestowed on her husband's small children.

Mrs. Dennis was optimistic, patient and kind, always regarding others wishes before her own. She was a home lover and friend to all who became acquainted with her.

While still a young woman she united with the Presbyterian church and has lived a conscientious christian life until her death. Her aged brother, two neices, three nephews and eight step children mourn the passing of one loved and respected by all.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church this afternoon, Rev. J. McFarlane officating. Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery.

 

Clara E. Chaffee, 96 of Austin, Minnesota, died on Wednesday September 26, 2007 at her son's home in Silt, Colorado.

Clara was born July 12, 1911 in Austin, Minnesota, the daughter of Julius and Elizabeth (Scholl) Johnson. She graduated from Austin High School and worked in the offices of the George A. Hormel Co. Clara was married to Miles "Mike" Chaffee on February 2, 1941 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.

She was a life-long member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where she was active in WELCA and circle. Clara had been a "den mother" with the Cub Scout program and was also a member of a birthday club, bridge club and the collectors club, acquiring many antique pieces over the years. She had also served on the Welfare Board.

Clara is survived by a son, Michael (Kim) Chaffee, Silt, Colorado; by a granddaughter, Kristin Chaffee, New Castle, Colorado; by a grandson, Michael John Chaffee, Denver, Colorado; and by great-grandchildren: Lindsay, Ashley, and Darik Hobbs.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Mike; and by a brother, Arthur P. Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kristi Koppel officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday, October 2nd, from 3 to 7 p.m., and at the church for one hour before the service on Wednesday.

 

Marcella Lucille Dulitz, age 83, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on September 25, 2007, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Marcella Newgard was born on July 13, 1924, to Elmer C. and Elsie (Rachuy) Newgard, in Little Rock, Iowa. A graduate of Hayfield High School, Marcella married Arnold Dulitz on July 12, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Waltham. They made their home in the Austin-Brownsdale area. She was member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin.

Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca "Becky" (Michael) Panter, Charles City, Iowa; two sons, Richard (Shirley) Dulitz, Marion, Iowa, and Mark Dulitz, Austin; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Josephine Dulitz, Brownsdale.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Elmer Newgard; by her husband, Arnold Dulitz; and by a brother, Nathan Newgard.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota. The Worlein Funeral Home in Austin was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Waltham.

 

Winferd (Windy) Wangen, age 83, of Hayward, Minnesota, died on Wednesday at the Austin Medical Center, Austin, Mower County, Minnesota.

Windy was born on March 15, 1924 in Freeborn County, Minnesota, to Clarence and Gladys (Nasby) Wangen. He graduated from Albert Lea High School.

After high school Windy joined the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II, where he was injured and earned the Purple Heart. After the war he returned to the Hayward area where he farmed and drove tractor until 2000.

He married Barbara Kermes on February 18, 1948 in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

He was a member of the Oakland Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member and also served as the congregation president, was on the planning commission for the new church building and was a member of the Hillcrest Cemetery committee.

Windy is survived by two sons, Gary (Linda) Wangen, Blaine, Minnesota, William Wangen, Willmar, Minnesota; by a daughter, Karen Wangen, Albert Lea, Minnesota; by 14 grandchildren; and by a brother, Stanley (Judy) Wangen, Woodstock, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; by his parents, Clarence and Gladys Wangen; and by a sister, Betty Jean Jackson.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Oakland Lutheran Church. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, with Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 VFW and Austin Post #91 American Legion in charge of military rites.

The Clasen-Jordan Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

 

Dale Garnatz, age 90, of Wykoff, Minnesota, died on Friday, September 28, 2007 at the Spring Valley Care Center.

Dale August Frederick Garnatz was born on April 16, 1917 in Sargeant, Mower County, Minnesota, the son of Lorn and Ella (Karges) Garnatz. He attended country school in the Dexter-Sargeant area. Dale worked for various farmers as a hired man in both Iowa and Minnesota.

On September 8, 1940 he married Metta Konken at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dexter, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Mower County, Minnesota. In 1948 they moved to the Wykoff area where he farmed. Dale retired from farming in 1964 and the couple moved to Wykoff. After this he drove school bus and also was a self-employed painter.

Dale was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, a longtime member of the Wykoff Lions Club, and was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Wykoff. He was a representative of the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, and was a past recipient of the Fillmore County Outstanding Senior Citizen Volunteer award. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Dale is survived by a son, Larry Garnatz, Cannon Falls, Minnesota; by two daughters, Lynda (Charles) Stephen of Spring Valley, Minnesota, and Myrna Meyer, Sierra Vista, Arizona; by seven grandchildren, by 15 great-grandchildren, and by three great-great-grandsons; by a brother, Dallas (Ruth) Garnatz, Lanesboro, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife Metta in 2006, by three children, by two grandchildren, and by four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff, with the Rev. Peter J. Sestak officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 at the funeral home, and also one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Walter Brandt, 96, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center in Austin.

Walter Clarence Brandt was born on July 27, 1911, to Ferdinand and Emma (Beuthien) Brandt of Worthington, Minnesota. They later moved to the Hayward, Minnesota area.

On February 13, 1938 he married Tressa Wradislavsky at St. John's Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, where he is still a member.

Walter was a lifetime farmer, living on his farm south of Oakland, Minnesota, until moving to Austin in 1971.

Walter is survived by his two sons, LeRoy (Shirley) Brandt of Austin, Wayne (Cheryl) Brandt of Austin; by grandsons: Allen Brandt of Austin, Brian (Jolene) Brandt of Austin, Michael (Wendy) Brandt of Austin, Jamie Brandt of Shakopee, Minnesota; by great-grandchildren: Jacob Brandt, Kelsey Brandt, Robin Brandt, Nick Brandt, Ashlyn Brandt; by a brother, Edmund (Alberta) Brandt of Albert Lea, Minnesota; by two sisters, Loretta Brandt of Wells, Minnesota, Edna (Olin) Darnel of Vista, California; and by a sister-in-law Helen Brandt of Hayward, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife Tressa in 1998, by his parents, by brothers, Leonard, Raymond and Helmer Brandt; by sisters, Bertha Cafourek, Audrey Watkins, Elva Jochumsen and LoVonna Glassel.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Twila Roush, 91 of Austin, Minnesota, died on Friday, September 28, 2007 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Twila Lydia Gillson was born on September 15, 1916 to Ezra and Edna (Bliese) Gillson in Austin, where she lived her entire life.

She married Lloyd Rousch on February 29, 1936 in Northwood, Iowa. Twila was an instructor for nurses' aides and retired from Burr Oak Manor. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Roush, of Austin; three daughters: Patsy (Walter) Campbell, Walpole, New Hampshire, Sharon VanSant, of Brooksville, Florida, Robbin (Mark) Knudtson, Austin, 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Pollin, of Austin, Lois (Frank) Felty, of Blaine, Minnesota; one brother, Raymond (Betty) Gillson, of Austin, one brother-in-law, Howard Just, of Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by one daughter, Karla Jennison; by a sister, Joann Just; by two sons-in-law, Rodman VanSant and Nila Jennison.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, with the Rev. Gordon Larson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota.

 

Doris Faust Schendel, 86, of North Oaks, Minnesota, died at her home on September 25, 2007.

Doris was born on January 19, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from Kalamazoo, Michigan High School and from North Central College, Naperville, Illinois.

In 1944, Doris married college classmate Lyndon Schendel of Bellingham, Minnesota, and began her 20-year career as an elementary school teacher. Doris' husband, a Presbyterian minister, served churches in Bay City, Michigan, Austin, White Bear Lake, and Cloquet, Minnesota. The couple also lived for a brief period in Altamont, New York, where the Rev. Schendel was the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood of Albany. In retirement they lived in Alexandria, Minnesota, and retirement communities at Boutwells Landing and North Oaks, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister Ruth, and by her brother Dwight.

Doris was a loyal wife, accompanying her husband on many camping adventures and fishing trips. She loved to entertain and took pride in the fact that she had china enough to serve 144 guests. Doris was a long-time member of the P.E.O. sisterhood which promotes educational opportunities for women.

The family traveled extensively. The highlight of the family's travels was an 11-week camping trip through Europe in 1966 when they visited 22 countries and spent 10 days in the Soviet Union. After retirement, the couple continued to travel widely visiting Egypt, Kenya, China, India, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Thailand among other places.

Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lyndon Schendel, North Oaks, Minnesota; by her four daughters: Chottie and Woody Angst of Anchorage, Ark., Judy and Charlie Williams, Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Mary Schendel and Phil Gleason, Cumberland, Maine, and Susan and Alan Reiss of Mahtomedi, Minnesota; by eight grandchildren: Susan and John Angst, Christina and Austin Williams, Hanna and Henry Gleason, and Sam and Ben Reiss; by sisters-in-law, Jane Faust and Mae Schendel; and by brothers-in-law, Samuel Russell and Stanley Schendel.

A service in celebration her life was held on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Presbyterian Homes of North Oaks.

 

Roger LeRoy Briggs, 82, of Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, died on Friday at the Austin Medical Center. Roger was born on November 4, 1924 in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, to Ralph and Ida (Benson) Briggs. He attended Austin area schools. Roger served with the United States Army Engineers in World War II, from 1943 to 1946 -- serving both the Asian and Pacific theaters.

On March 15, 1947, Roger married Ella Mae Bates in Austin. Roger worked in the Hormel plant for 43 years. He enjoyed gardening and ceramics. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 VFW, and Austin Post #91 American Legion.

Roger is survived by his wife Ella Briggs, of Austin, Minnesota; by a son, Terry (Mary) Lou Briggs, Buffalo City, Wisconsin; by grandchildren: Amanda (Brian) Lacey, Winona, Minnesota, Kory Briggs, Buffalo City, Wisconsin, Katie Briggs, Winona, Minnesota; and by great-grandchildren: Brenden and Addyson Lacey, and Bella Mae Turnmire.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 1, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Patricia Toschak officiating. Burial was in Rose Creek Enterprise Cemetery, with Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 VFW, and Austin Post #91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and also for one hour before the service at the church.

ROY LOU FURTNEY, BOY LEADER, DIED

High School Graduate, Scout and Sunday School Worker, 17

Yesterday morning at 7:55 death claimed one of Austin's most outstanding young men, Roy L. Furtney, a member of this year's high school graduation class. Roy was taken ill on April 28 and underwent an operation for a ruptured appendix at St. Olaf Hospital ten days later. Many complications followed and had it not been for his exceptional mental attitude and the strong fight he made personally, it is doubtful if he would have survived to leave the hospital on his graduation day. This he did, however, after a five weeks battle. The few days he was at home he went to school to receive his report cards and diploma, took his cap and gown home so he could have some snapshots made in them, and on Sunday morning attended his Sunday school class meeting. He did not, however, gain in strength but rather developed a fever which specialists and the family physician realized called for a second operation to locate the source of infection. The operation was performed last Thursday afternoon and for many hours the family was most hopeful for recovery as the fever lowered, but when the temperature started to rise and went to 110 it was not long until the light of life burned out.

Birthday in Hospital

His seventeenth birthday came while Roy was in the hospital, on May 13. That day he was showered with card greetings from his school and church friends and close to fifty of his friends called at the hospital to visit him.

In his Boy Scout work he was a member of Troop 2 and the senior patrol leader. He was always considered the outstanding Scout in the troop, far above the average, a born leader. In his mind he was always with his troop until the last. Saturday night he called them all by name and gave them their Scout orders. In the Methodist Church of which he has been a life-long member, he was a member of the junior choir, was active in Epworth League and Sunday School work, and since last November had had charge of the recreational activities for the young people of the church one night each week.

In the recreational work he had built up a tremendous interest but when illness took him away as the leader, interest in the activities themselves was lost to his followers so that the only thing they desired to do on Monday evenings was to visit him at the hospital and hope for his speedy recovery to return him to them as a leader.

Planned to Attend U.

Plans were all made for Roy to enter the University of Minnesota this fall and had his plans carried he doubtless would have become an outstanding student, as few young men had the promise of as bright a future as did he. It was refreshing to meet and to know him, a strong upright young man, who stood for things that were right, clean, and worthwhile. His short life, however, will stand out among his schoolmates and church friends in Austin and his splendid example will long survive.

Services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3: 30 at the Methodist Church with Rev. W.E. Shields of the Methodist Church officiating. Members of his Sunday School class and Scout troop will act as pall bearers. Representatives of the junior choir will sing two selections, "If Ye Love Me" by Lansing and "Love Divine All Love Excelling" by Dale. Survivors are his mother and father, three brothers, Ferris, Dana, and Larry, and his grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Furtney.
