Chauncey Leverich

1827-1856

Birth: 1827
Richland County, Ohio
Death: Aug., 1856
Austin, Mower County, Minnesota

NOTE: Chauncey Leverich was originally buried next to his store, but was later reinterred in Oakwood Cemetery.

FACTS ABOUT C. LEVERICH--
Cause of Death: First murder in Mower Co. MN

The first person murdered was Chauncy Leverich, of Austin, by two men by the names of Silvers and Oliver, in 1856. Leverich had just opened a saloon, and Silver and Oliver, becoming intoxicated and noisy, were ordered out. They went into the street and dared him to come out; just as he stepped out of the door Silvers struck him with a steel wagon spring, and he died about one week after that time. Silvers and Oliver were arrested, the former fined $2,000, and the latter $1,000 and costs.

The first frame house was erected by C. Leverich in 1855.

From interview by the Austin Daily Herald, July 1956:

Grace Leverich Bixby, granddaughter of Chauncey. (Grace's father, Sylvester, was three years old when Chauncey was killed. Apparently his mother, Marilla Usher Leverich had died previously, and Chauncey had remarried. [to Hannah Tifft] )

"His famous father was murdered in his store on the corner of Bridge and Chatham streets. Sylvester was then three, youngest of three children, who were later abandoned bythe second Mrs. Leverich.

Both Sylvester and his older brother [ James] Bird were astute business men, like their father. Sylvester became wealthy in the real estate business at Marion, Iowa. He also was a prominent Democrat. Bird, though capable, was unfortunate in his choice of friends, and was never successful."

The Leverich boys were reared by their older sister, Sarah Caroline, who was the grandmother of Helen L. Richards, who will take part in the unveiling ceremony. Both Helen and Grace admired the Leverich family, but not for Chauncey' s second wife [Hannah Tifft]. "who left the children to shift for themselves in a hotel over a saloon. The woman, who had been a school teacher 'had a pretty face, and that's about all."

NOTE: Hannah Tifft Leverich later married David Tubbs.
