Lorraine Lenora Griggs was born on August 24, 1915 in Lyle, Minnesota,
to Milo and Lenora (Riehm) Griggs. She attended Rockford High School. In
1934 Lorraine married the love of her life, Glen Hall. To this union a
daughter was born, Deloris. Glen passed away in 1989.
Tami remembers her grandmother writing a letter, saying she had been to
the doctor and was given bad news. She was healthy and could live another
10-15 years. That is what she did, Lorraine lived life to the fullest.
Even her last year and a half in a wheel chair she made it to the many
activities at Good Shepherd. She loved bingo, having many prizes in her
room to show from it.
Lorraine had a love for travel and adventure. Every winter she spent the
winters traveling the southern states and Mexico. Arizona was probably her
favorite.
She had a love of cats. She had many cats over the years. Oliver was
much company to her. She fed all the feral cats in the neighborhood. Making
sure they had blankets and a warm place and they were fed when she went south
in the winter.
Lorraine loved to cook and bake. Collecting recipes and making different
dishes for her family and friends. She always had cookies for the
grandchildren, nieces, and nephews when they came to visit.
She became a NASCAR fan in the later years and Sunday afternoons she
was glued to the television to watch her favorite driver, Jimmie Johnson
to see if he would take the checkered flag that week. She enjoyed playing
cards with the neighbor ladies, doing puzzles with Glen, enjoyed reading
and doing puzzle books to keep her mind sharp.
Left to cherish Lorraine's memory are her daughter, Deloris (Orlando)
Lindley of Nora Springs; her grandchildren, Tami Lindley of Altoona, David
Lindley of Mason City, and Scot (Joanne) Lindley of Nora Springs; four
great-grandchildren, Tony, Colton, Cody, and Amber; three
great-great-grandchildren, Zander, Logan, and Destiny; as well as
numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen and
her two sisters, Eleanor Emmons and Donna Klemesrud.
Lorraine lived life to its fullest and she hopes each of you gets out
and does the same. Don't let life pass you by… Make It Happen!

Dr. John D. Hagen c1924-2018
Dr. John D. Hagen, age 94, former long-time Austin, Minnesota resident,
more recently of Rochester, Minnesota died on Aug. 3, 2018, surrounded by
his family.
Known for his high ideals, humility and personal warmth as well as his
intelligence, kindness and sense of humor, John touched many hearts in the
course of his life. He was a man of strong faith and believed that God is
a God of love.
His interests were broad and he was ever alert for and receptive to new
ideas. He loved music, art, poetry and history in equal measure. He was
known for his ability to recite hundreds of passages of poetry and historic
quotations from memory, each suited to the topic under discussion, or the
mood of the moment.
He sought out music of all kinds whether it was Handel’s Messiah, Ravi
Shankar on the Sitar, playing his recorder, or singing in the Charter House
Choir until he no longer had the breath to sing. But perhaps his favorite
form of music, always with him, always brightening the space around him,
was his ability to whistle — virtually anything, impeccably rendering
lengthy classical pieces as he walked through the clinic, down the street,
or around the house.
John was born to Elmer and Sally Dahl Hagen in the tiny border town of
Wales, North Dakota, on Feb 23, 1924. His father died when John was eight,
but not before giving him a parting blessing in which he found solace all
of his life.
With his mother and grandmother he moved to Austin for a time and then
to Minneapolis where he graduated from West High School.
He joined the Navy, volunteered to be a medical corpsman, but was found
on placement testing to be more suited to Medicine. He attended Denison
University on the G.I. Bill, and went on to medical school at the University
of Minnesota. There he met his future wife, Joan Kunny. They were married
Sept. 20, 1948.
He completed his residency in Internal Medicine, and was transferred
to the Army as a Captain at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. After completion of
service and with an ever growing family, he and Joan moved to Austin in
1955 where he joined the Austin Clinic.
Beloved by patients for his warmth and empathy, John practiced Internal
Medicine at the Austin Clinic and St. Olaf Hospital for 38 years. With an
ever-active mind, a love of innovation, and a strong desire to contribute
to the town, he enthusiastically worked with colleagues to bring the latest
cardiology services to Austin, including the intensive care unit at St.
Olaf Hospital. He was the first physician from rural Minnesota to be
honored with the American College of Physicians’ Laureate Award, and
recognition as a master clinician.
Despite 80 hour work weeks, and because of Joan, he always kept family
as a priority. Together they raised seven children, confident in, and
supportive of, the outstanding school system in Austin. They put great
energy into enriching the lives of their children through vacations to
the National Parks, trips to the opera, Minnesota Symphony concerts, art
museums, weekend hikes and maybe most of all by instilling a love of
reading in each of them.
In 2011 John and Joan moved to Charter House, in Rochester, where they
were happy and had family nearby.
He is survived by his wife Joan, by his children John Jr., Joel (Susan),
Gregory (Therese), Bradley (Linda Niehaus), Philip (Missy), Andrea Gates
(Eric) and Judith Derauf (Bruce), by grandchildren Mikaela, Kirsten, Jesse,
Christopher, Micah, Nikolas, Kiona, Kenneth, Kyra, Ian, and Torstein, and
by a great-grandson, Harrison.
A memorial service will be at St. Olaf Church in Austin at 11 a.m. on
Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, with a lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers the
family suggests memorials to Doctors Without Borders.

Richard Michael Benzkofer 1940-2018
Richard Michael Benzkofer, 77, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 20, 2018,
in Austin, Minnesota, from a heart attack.
Dick was born December 2, 1940, on a farm outside Milford, Iowa, the son
of Edward and Denise (Aldred) Benzkofer. He attended St. Joseph Parish grade
school and Milford High School, graduating with a degree in accounting
from what was then Mankato State University, “the Harvard of Midwest,”
he liked noting.
Dick relished exploring new places, from Port Aransas, Texas, to Grand
Marais, Minnesota, as well as new ideas, whether found at a state fair or
an art museum, an orchestra hall or an arboretum. He had a lifelong love
of rock ’n’ roll. Dick was the longtime finance director of the City of
Austin, serving the city from 1972 to 1997. In 1985, under Dick’s
leadership, the city for the first time earned the Government Finance
Officers Association’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in
Financial Reporting, which encourages local governments to go beyond
the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles
in the spirit of transparency and good government. The city has won the
award every year since.
Later, he was honored with a lifetime membership to the Minnesota
Society of CPAs. After Dick left his employment with the city, he worked
for a number of years at Scanlon, Nietz & Murch LLC in Dodge Center,
Minnesota. Since retiring, he whole-heartedly volunteered his services
as treasurer for The Friends of the Austin Public Library and the Paramount
Theater (now the Austin Area Commission for the Arts). Earlier in his
career, Dick worked as an auditor for the State of Iowa. His first job
in Austin was with the CPA firm then known as Bowlby, Anfinson and Co.
Dick was a gentle, compassionate, selfless and patient soul who
cherished family, and at its heart, his wife of 53 years, Peggy. His love
for her and their marriage remains an inspiration. Dick’s immediate family
gathered every year for RickFest, a week of laughing, loving, 4×400 relay
races, 500, tennis, puzzles, Four Square, and epic water fights (of which
he was an eager participant) to remember and honor and mourn his son,
Rick, who was killed in 1987 in a car accident at the age of 18.
One of Dick’s enduring gifts to his family will be its own history. Dick
tirelessly researched the Benzkofer and Aldred family trees, traveling to
cemeteries and churches and courthouses and reaching out to potential
relatives across the Midwest and in Germany. He would have loved the
family gathering caused by his passing.
In addition to his wife, Peggy (Smith) Benzkofer, Dick is survived by
his daughters, Rachel (Tim) Guire of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Sara
Benzkofer of St. Paul, Minnesota; son, Stephan (Marjorie) Benzkofer of
Oak Park, Illinois; grandchildren, Megan and Diana Guire and Samuel and
Audrey Benzkofer; brothers, Alan (Liz) Benzkofer of Mankato, Minnesota,
and Philip (Carolyn) Benzkofer of Dingman’s Ferry, Pennsylvania; and his
sister, Diane Williams of Cherokee, Iowa. In addition to his son, Richard
M. Benzkofer II, he was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother,
Robert Benzkofer.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at
St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 2000 W. Oakland Avenue in Austin with Father
James Steffes officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the
service on Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery
in Austin. In lieu of flowers, the Benzkofer family suggests that memorials
in Richard’s honor be directed to the Austin Area Foundation, P.O. Box 6,
Austin, MN 55912, in care of The Friends of the Library. Please consider
jotting down a few remembrances of your own life or that of your parents
and grandparents for future genealogists—which may very well be you.
Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
