Lucille Margaret (Byrne) Stratton 1924-2018
Lucille Margaret Stratton
February 29, 1924 - May 28, 2018
Lucille Margaret Stratton passed away peacefully Monday, May 28, 2018,
at the home of her son, surrounded by her loving family.
Lucille was born February 29, 1924 and grew up on the family farm near
St. Thomas, Minnesota with her parents, Richard and Cecelia Byrne and five
siblings. She graduated from LeSueur High School in 1941, attended teacher’s
training in Mankato, Minnesota and taught in a rural school setting.
She married Ronald Stratton on May 7, 1949 and together they raised six
children. Their first years were spent in Belle Plaine, Minnesota before
moving to Austin, Minnesota in 1958. Lucille was a stay at home mom until
they all reached school age. She then held a variety of jobs before working
many years at Osco Drug. Many will remember her as the lady with a smile
in the camera department. After retiring, she spent many hours volunteering
at her church, nursing homes and St. Olaf Hospital Auxillary.
Love of family came first to Lucille – from her lifelong marriage to
Ronald, to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had
countless friends and was a “second mother” to many. Cooking for all of
them was a great expression of her love. Apple pies, Special K bars,
cinnamon rolls and chicken dinners were especially enjoyed! She was a
faithful Catholic her entire life and an active member at Queen of Angels
Church since arriving in Austin.
She was an excellent dancer (as her sisters could tell you), enjoyed
reading and was an avid card player – a game was bound to break out any
time Lucille was around. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage.
She treasured the family’s annual summer vacations to northern Minnesota,
which eventually grew to 60 plus family members making the trip “Up North”
together.
Lucille is survived by her six children, Robert (Wendy) Stratton of
Austin, Minnesota, Bill (Shirlee) Stratton of Austin, Minnesota, Jim
(Kathy) Stratton of Rose Creek, Minnesota, John (Diane) Stratton of
Yuma, Arizona, Cece (Joe) Kroc of Austin, Minnesota and Roger (Annie)
Stratton of Austin, Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren;
her sisters, Mary Matejcek and Kaye McMillan; and many cousins, nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Alice Groh
and Mildred Zika, brother Jim Byrne, brothers-in-law Clem Groh, Tom Matejcek,
Edward Zika and Wayne McMillan.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1st at

Mortuary on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00

Obituary
Doris McCrea Schember
Doris McCrea Schember, 100 years old, left this world on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, after a long and full life through the colorful decades of the 20th century.
Born on October 3, 1917, in Muskegon during the First World War, she came to Grand Haven at the age of 3 with her parents, Frederick and Gladys McCrea, and her infant sister, Jane, when Mr. McCrea took a position as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. The family rode the high wave of false prosperity in the decade of the “Roaring ‘20s,” crashing down with the rest of the country into the Great Depression of the ‘30s. Much was lost to them, but one major resource remained: a large tract of land on the southwest end of Grand Haven. On this property, tucked up alongside the shoreward-most dune, was one lone little house. The family gave up their home on Spring Lake and moved in. Mr. McCrea began the work of developing the property into salable lots. That little home still stands at what is now the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and Wisconsin Street.
In 1935, Doris graduated from Grand Haven High School, went on to graduate from Hope College, and later received a master’s degree in English from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. Her fiancé, George Schember of Spring Lake, graduated from Michigan Tech and upon taking a Federal Civil Service exam, was ranked among the top tier of engineering students in the country. He accepted a position at the material headquarters of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. On July 5, 1941, six months before Pearl Harbor, the couple were married at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Grand Haven. Their home for the war years, and seven years of the cold war thereafter, was in Dayton. Those years took a severe toll on Mr. Schember’s health, as his skills were needed in many different combat and potential combat areas, working long hours in extremes of heat or cold.
In 1952, they returned to Grand Haven and raised their three children in the home they built on a dune, overlooking Lake Michigan. The road to their home winds in a southwesterly direction off Grand Avenue, up and down through the dunes. It had been named Doris Avenue by her father.
While in Grand Haven, they were very active in community affairs: St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Spring Lake Yacht Club, Spring Lake Country Club, Grand Haven Rotary, League of Women Voters, the PTA, Cub Scouts, and other special events as they arose. The family members were avid sports fans, with special loyalty to the University of Michigan that goes back five generations in Mrs. Schember’s family and continues in their lives, regardless of wherever they may be. In 1955, the citizens of Grand Haven elected Mrs. Schember to a special nine-member commission that wrote a new charter for the city. She was the only woman member of the commission. She also taught in Grand Haven Junior High School from 1961 to 1964, after which she and Mr. Schember returned to Dayton where Mr. Schember did some consulting work, and Mrs. Schember taught high school English and journalism.
In January 1968, the day after his 50th birthday, Mr. Schember died from a severe emphysema attack. Mrs. Schember then moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to be near her married daughter in Birmingham and her two sons as they went through law school at the University of Michigan. She trained as a remedial reading instructor and taught for nine years in that field, after which she and her second husband, Benjamin Grosse, a former resident of Grand Haven and longtime family friend, moved to Florida. Two of Mrs. Schember’s children settled their families in Florida, and one of them in suburban Washington, D.C. Doris always retained the Schember last name, but Ben was the only (and a very good) grandfather her grandchildren ever knew. He died in Florida in 1992, and was buried with a full military honors ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Schember spent 25 years in Florida. She was very active in environmental affairs, and served several terms on a state water board, having been appointed and reappointed by both Republican and Democratic governors. She also traveled the world, visiting every great city on every continent, cruising seas and rivers, going above the Arctic Circle, down to the tip of Africa, following the America’s Cup races in Australia, walking the Great Wall of China, riding a yak in outer Mongolia, an elephant in India, a camel in the Sahara, the Siberian Express across Russia, going on safari in the Serengeti, her father’s ancestral castle in the Scottish Highlands, her mother’s birthplace in Vienna, taking a helicopter to Corregidor where her second husband was captured during World War II, and many, many more places.
In 2004, Mrs. Schember returned to Grand Haven to live near the young families of her brother-in-law and sister, the late Paul and Jane Parks of Grand Haven. She again became active in St. John’s Episcopal Church and enrolled as a volunteer tutor in the adult literacy program R.E.A.D. She enjoyed renewing friendships with others who remembered going to junior high school on the top floor of Central School and then across the yard to Grand Haven High School, and she rejoiced every day to be back again among the scenes that had always been so dear to her heart. A special companion until his death in 2011 was George Nordhouse of Spring Lake, a lifelong friend.
In October 2017, one of her granddaughters, Dr. Caitlin Dunham, joined Mayo Brothers of Rochester, Minnesota. She and her software engineer husband, their 3-year-old daughter, 1-year-old son and their live-in caregiver settled in nearby Austin, Minnesota. Caitlin asked her grandmother to come join their happy household for the rest of her life. And so, Mrs. Schember did.
In addition to her two husbands and her sister and brother-in-law, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Schember; a nephew, Christopher Parks; and John Gellick, the half-brother of her second husband. She leaves her three beloved children: Jane Schember Robertson of Bradenton Beach, Florida, Steven (Linda) Schember of Sarasota, Florida, and Daniel (Susan) Schember of Bethesda, Maryland; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a dear step-daughter, Mrs. Barbara (John) Ruark of Comstock Park; three step-grandchildren of this area; a number of nieces and nephews of the Parks, Schember and Gellick families; and two cousins and their families in the McCrea family.
According to Mrs. Schember’s wishes, there will be no Memorial Service. Cremation has taken place, and the family will gather at a later date for her interment alongside her first husband in the McCrea family plot in Lake Forest Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. Please visit www.klaassenfuneralhome.com to sign Mrs. Schember’s online guest book.

Jeanne Faye (Champine) Lamp 1934-2018
Jeanne Faye (Champine) Lamp, 84, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, passed
away peacefully on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Grand Meadow Health Care.
Jeanne was born March 7, 1934, to George Lloyd (“Colonel”) and Grace
Ellen (Myers) Champine on the farm near Ceylon, Minnesota, that her
great-grandparents, Charles and Lucretia (Tiffany) Champine had homesteaded
in 1877. The family still owns the farm and has the original homestead
certificate, signed by then President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Like one of her grandmothers, she was known for her beautiful red hair.
She was also known for her quick wit and superb command of the English
language.
Jeanne attended the first six grades at the “Champine School,” so-called
because it was located on land donated by her great-grandfather. When that
country school closed due to consolidation, her remaining years were at
Ceylon, graduating as salutatorian in 1952.
After furthering her education at Clifton Terrace Institute in Minneapolis,
she worked at Western Union offices in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Albert Lea,
Minnesota. There she met her husband to be, Robert Arlo Lamp, who was a depot
agent with the Milwaukee Railroad. They were married Jan. 1, 1954, in Ceylon
and moved to Vienna, South Dakota, where he continued as a depot agent. Their
first son was born while there.
Jeanne and family moved to Grand Meadow in 1955. Her husband was the
Milwaukee Railroad depot agent and she was a stay-at-home mom for a number
of years. She then worked in the business office at Community Memorial
Hospital in Spring Valley, Minnesota, for eight years before taking a
position as cashier with Minnesota First, also in Spring Valley. Although
it was almost unheard of at the time to have a female in the position, she
soon became branch bank manager, a position she held for 19 years before
taking early retirement. Shortly after that, she assumed a part-time position
as a proofreader and typesetter with the Spring Valley Tribune, a job in
which she took great joy.
While continuing to work at the Tribune, she took on the monumental job
of retyping the 1976 history of Grand Meadow, “Of Days That Used To Be,”
by Harriett Torgrimson. She helped author Marceil Skifter incorporate and
update it through 2012 into the revised version, “What a Grand Meadow,” a
strictly volunteer labor of love that took several years. During this time
she also proofread and edited the book “A Minnesota Life and Sports” by
author Jon Laging.
Jeanne was well known in the Spring Valley area for her involvement
in community affairs, including being secretary of the Chamber of Commerce
for a number of years and one of the first female members of the formerly
all-male Kiwanis Club. Very shortly after joining that organization, she
was asked to become secretary-treasurer and held that position for nearly
20 years. Jeanne was known throughout the Minnesota-Dakotas Kiwanis District
as “the glue that holds the Spring Valley Kiwanis Club together.”
Survivors include four sons, Dean (Lynne) of Northfield, Minnesota, Dale
of Bloomington, Minnesota, Greg (Meghan) of Grand Meadow, and Michael (Lisa)
of Adams, Minnesota; one daughter, Laurie (Kevin) Kallinen of Silver Bay,
Minnesota; one brother, Robert (Lois) Champine of Ceylon; one sister,
Marilyn Will of Northfield; nine grandsons; one granddaughter; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2017; four brothers,
Donald Champine of polio at age 13, Ray (Sara) Champine and Jerry Champine,
both in 2015, and Veryl (Cheryl) Champine in 2018; and one sister-in-law,
Cheryl Champine, in 2017.
Jeanne’s body was donated to Mayo Clinic for research. Being the mother
of five children, Jeanne was always a very giving person in life and now in
death she continues to give of herself. In respect for her wishes, private
family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed
to the Grand Meadow Lions Club Foundation, the Grand Meadow Area Ambulance,
or to the donor’s choice.

Obituary for Margaret Eileen (Reller) Goodnature
September 12, 1925 - May 30, 2018
Our mother was born September 12, 1925 on her parents family farm just northwest of Ellendale, Minnesota to Herman Earle Reller and Lillian Nelson Reller. She grew up with her 3 sisters during the Great Depression. She worked very hard to help her parents with farming. Calvin Coolidge was president when our mom was born. His term ended in 1929; just around the corner would be the Great Depression. Eileen said she never felt the effects of the depression due to living on a farm and having enough to eat.
Then the first of many tragedies struck Eileen's world at just sixteen. Her mother died suddenly at home while in the presence of Eileen and other family members. She would later in life endure the death of her husband, oldest son, granddaughter, and all three of her sisters. Those events very likely steeled her for the long life she was to have and her amazing ability to deal with life’s changes.
Eileen attended a small town school in Ellendale, Mn. While attending, she met David (Paul) (Bucky) Goodnature with whom she would later marry and raise their four son’s. David, who was ahead of Eileen in school, took a fancy to her and asked her out on a date. As their romance blossomed, he often took her dancing at Monterey dance hall in Owatonna, Mn. Mom really loved to dance, our Dad, not so much! The local and world atmosphere in those days, with daily talk of war, must have been explosive.
In December of 1941, World War II broke out. David and Eileen were 17 and 16 at that time. One of our mothers favorite memories was on Christmas Eve in 1941. David gave her a gold locket that she cherished throughout her life. He asked Eileen to marry him that evening. Six months later on April 25, 1942, David and Eileen wed. David and Eileen, with great optimism, joined the War effort. David enlisted in the Army Air Corp while our mom would later become one of the famous “Rosie Riveters” (airplane factory workers).
Eileen stayed on the farm with her infant son Steven until David’s second leave in June of 1943. Eileen and Steven then traveled by train with David to the metropolitan air force base in Van Nyes Calif where he was stationed. Memory/quote: “I hate train rides,” our mom would blurt out whenever a train was mentioned.
Our mother often talked about the lengthy train rides with her new born in tow. Trains were the long distance mode of travel for soldiers and their families during that time period. Upon their arrival in California, David & Eileen became part of the the greatest generation. David as a Air Force instructor and Eileen as a proud member of female factory workers, constructing fighter planes (p-38 fighters) for the war effort. She also worked on the Air Force base doing office work.
Their military experience would cement life long patriotism in them and eventually in there family. One of their sons, Steven, was born during the war. Their second son, Wayne, was born shortly after the war ended. Both Steve & Wayne would serve honorably during the Vietnam war.
When Eileen found out she was expecting baby Wayne, she and David decided it would be best if she returned to her families farm in Minnesota. David left military service after the war in December of 1945, returning home to Minnesota and to his wife and two boys. Dave went to work for the phone company (North Western Bell) and completed over 30 years of service. The family eventually settled in Austin where they raised their family. They purchased a new home until after Jim and Greg were born.
James & Greg both had accomplished careers in the telecommunication industry. In 1955, the family built and moved into a new home until after Dave’s passing in early 1993. In the fall of 1993, Eileen launched a life long dream. She moved to a warmer climate, sold the family home, and started a new adventure in Phoenix, Arizona. Their wonderful love for each other created 39 decedents, four sons, ten grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
On a personal note, our mom and dad were truly part of the “Greatest Generation”, a term coined from Tom Brokaw’s book,“The Greatest Generation”. It is believed that their generation survived World War II by doing what they felt was the right thing, regardless of the potential consequences. It is truly astounding when you contemplate that they survived the worst depression in history followed by the most violent conflict in history. They stuck together through thick and thin! Raising their children with the same tenacity, values, and greatness that their generation is known for.
Watching my mother go through the experience of old age has been very painful at times, but no one that I am aware of has accomplished this feat with more bravery than she did. She has chosen herself when to move from one stage of life to another. It was mom that choice when to quit driving, when to leave her home and seek assistance, when to enter assisted living, and even when to move to a nursing home.
Our mom had a long and fulfilling life in Austin. Other than the weather, she liked the community. She always felt her main purpose was raising her four boys. However, from time to time, she added local employment to her busy life. She work on Main Street at the Wallace’s clothing store, Sterling Pharmacy, and at the Big Steer Restaurant, where she once met and served breakfast to movie star Steve McQueen. Moms favorite trip would far and above be Alaska. She spoke of there Alaskan adventures often. Mom and Dad loved fishing, snowmobiling, their lake cabin, and spending time with friends. Our mom loved her Catholic heritage and was an active church volunteer, both in Austin and Phoenix, Arizona where she retired.
She is survived by sons Wayne & Catherine Goodnature and his children, Heidi Goodnature, Kennedy Thompson, Riely Marsolek & Mikaela Cypher, Kynlie. Susan Howe (deceased), Kaitlan & Dolan Wagner, Jackson, Mason. Lauren Heiny, Joshua and Jordan Howe, Son, Greg & Julie Goodnature & their children Mike & Charity Goodnature, Jackson and Jayden. Dan and Ellen Goodnature. Teresa Bruce, Marleigh and Tatianna Punt. Sara & Conrad Moline, Ryann, Alexis, Madeline, Charlie. Son James & Lois Goodnature & their children Michele & Brad Norton, Samantha & Cody McCollough Jaylyn, Jackson. Derek Norton. Mark & Kimberly Goodnature, David, Mathew.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; husband David; son Steven; granddaughter Susan Howe; sisters Iloe Drake, Madeline Tews, Barbara Goldsberry.
A Prayer Service will be held 10 am on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Mayer Funeral Home, with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call from 8-10 am on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.Condolence may be online at www.mayerfh.com
