Richard James Thorson

1932-2018

August 6, 1932 - April 11, 2018 (age 85)

Richard James Thorson of Spring Valley, age 85, passed away April 11th surrounded by his family.

Richard was born on August 6th, 1932 in Bennington township to Bud and Laura (Kohn) Thorson.

Richard attended school in Grand Meadow and served his country in the US Army from 1953-1955.

In December of 1955, he was united in marriage to Joan Thoreson and they had four children, Becky, Bobbi, Mark and Lynee.

Richard farmed for most of his life and worked at LeRoy Products for many years.

He enjoyed fishing, especially in Northern MN creating a lifetime tradition of summer vacations for the entire family. He also enjoyed watching Packers football, creating a healthy rivalry with most of his Vikings family fans.

Richard was active in the American Legion for 60 years and held several commander posts within the county, district and local Ostrander chapter.

Richard reunited with his high school sweetheart Iola Thompson and they have spent the last 18 years together enjoying bus trips, summer vacations, gardening and occasional casino visits.

Richard is survived by his children, Becky Hansen (Phil) of Grand Meadow, Bobbi Olson (Bill) of Byron, Mark Thorson of Grand Meadow, Lynee Schaefer of Cannon Falls, two sisters, Delores Phillips and Glendora Root, sister-in-law Delores Thorson, 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and Iola Thompson, “his Honey and Best Friend”.

Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander, MN on Monday, April 16th from 5:00-7:00 pm. The funeral will also be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander, MN on Tuesday, April 17th at 10:30 am, burial to follow at 2:00 pm at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN.

Lorys Avon (Sorenson) Nauman

1937-2018

June 11, 1937 - March 31, 2018

Lorys A. Nauman, 80, of Cross Lake, Minnesota, died Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Sojourner Place, Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Lorys Avon Sorenson was born on June 11, 1937 in LeRoy, Minnesota, the daughter of Leonard A. and Laura O. (Thoreson) Sorenson. She was a 1955 graduate of LeRoy High School in Minnesota. On June 1, 1957, Lorys married the love of her life James Nauman, in LeRoy, MN. They had three children, Jeff (Sherri) Nauman, Brad Nauman, and Jann (Mark) Holeman. Lorys was a secretary at Hormel Foods in the 1960’s and, over the years, held several volunteer positions at Grace Baptist Church in Austin and the Evangelical Free Church in Cross Lake. She loved and enjoyed her nine grandchildren and they enjoyed visiting her at her lake home in Cross Lake. She also enjoyed her weekly visits with her friends from The Log Church’s Young at Heart group.

Lorys is survived by her children: Jeff (Sherri) Nauman of Truman, MN; Brad Nauman of Buffalo, MN; Jann (Mark) Holeman of Kalamazoo, MI. Two former daughters-in-law: Betty Eschler of Scottsdale, AZ and Jill Nauman of Buffalo, MN. Nine grandchildren: Lindsay Nauman, Jamie (Martin) Danner, Jeremy Nauman, Stacey Nauman, Krista Nauman, Derek Nauman, Christian (Anna) Holeman, Adam Holeman, and Laura Holeman. Two great granddaughters: Kylee Danner and Kaylee Danner; and nieces and nephews.

Lorys was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her parents, Leonard and Laura, her sister Helen, and her five brothers Les, Don, Vernon, Orlo, and Russ.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, April 23, 2018, at Grace Baptist Church in Austin, MN with Pastor Mark Holeman officiating. Visitors may greet the family Sunday afternoon from 3-5 pm at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at the church on Monday from 12-1 pm preceding the memorial service. Interment will be at the LeRoy Cemetery in LeRoy, Minnesota the afternoon of April 23rd.

Dorran Vernon Rickert

1952-2018

Dorran V. Rickert, 65, of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

Dorran Vernon Rickert was born July 14, 1952, in Glencoe, Minnesota, the son of Vernon and Lucille (Lucas) Rickert. He was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton, Minnesota, and graduated from Brownton High School in 1970. He attended Willmar Community College and Marshall State University, where he received his teaching degree for K-6. He student taught for one year in Woodlake, Minnesota, and then received a job at Southgate Elementary School in Austin. Dorran continued his education, receiving his masters degree from St. Cloud State University. He retired from teaching at Southgate Elementary in the spring of 2017.

Dorran was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the Teachers Association, Senior Card Club and an avid volunteer, working whenever he was asked. He loved his church, family, friends, spending time on the farm where he grew up and playing cards, but his passion was teaching and tutoring kids whenever he could. He enjoyed watching Austin High School sports and found it was a way to stay connected with many of the kids he had taught. He liked to keep in touch with his many family and friends. Dorran was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Rickert; grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his mother, Lucille Lucas Rickert, Brownton; brother, Kerry Rickert, Brownton; sister and brother-in-law, Ranaye and Randy Baumgarten, Becker, Minnesota; nephews, Nate Baumgarten, Becker, Cody Baumgarten, Brainerd, Minnesota, and Caleb Baumgarten, Plymouth, Minnesota; niece, Cassie Baumgarten, College Station, Texas; aunts and uncle, Jan and Chuck Draeger, Hutchinson, Minnesota, and Rose Ehrenberg, Buffalo, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 13, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Niethammer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and for one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Brownton. Memorials are preferred to the Austin Area Education Foundation.

Allen Lyle Andree

1959-2018

December 26, 1959 - April 09, 2018

Allen Lyle Andree, 58 of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died Monday, April 9, 2018 surrounded by his family at Comforcare Good Samaritan Society in Austin, Minnesota.

Allen was born December 26, 1959 in Adams, Minnesota to Robert and Catherine (Williams) Andree. He attended Sumner Elementary, Ellis Junior High and graduated from Austin High School in 1979. He went on to attend two years at the Austin Vocational School.

He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, crafts, making rugs and painting. Allen loved collecting stamps, coins, comic books and all kinds of memorabilia including pocket watches and glasses. He also liked fishing, watching old movies and birds.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Rudy Andree, Sr. and nephew, Eric Andree.

Allen is survived by his mother, Catherine (Kate) Andree, Austin, MN; brothers, Robert Andree, Jr., St. Peter, MN and Barry Andree, Austin, MN; sister, Patsy Koontz, Austin, MN; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, April 13th at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Reverend John Schleicher officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Friday.

Donna Louise (Lambert) Froehlich

1927-2018

Donna L. Froehlich, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018, at St. Mark’s Living in Austin.

Donna Louise Lambert was born on August 10, 1927, to Henry and Ruby (Reno) Lambert in Aldrich, Minnesota. She lived various places in her childhood. On Oct. 9, 1948, she married Arthur Froehlich in Bertha, Minnesota. The couple moved to Hewitt, Minnesota, and lived on the farm until relocating to Austin in the early 1950s. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Gary. Donna worked as a housekeeper for many years.

She was a long time member of Holy Cross in Austin, where she taught Sunday school. She was very artsy and enjoyed baking and cross stitch. Donna will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Arthur Froehlich of Austin; son, Gary (Diane) Froehlich of Owatonna, Minnesota; two grandsons, Josh Froehlich and Dakota Froehlich; brother, David Lambert of Florida; four sisters, Carol Person of Lakeville, Minnesota, Virginia Lyson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Linda Hrabi of Winnipeg, Canada, and Marilyn Lambert of Grand Forks, North Dakota; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ruby Lambert; grandson, Justin Froehlich; two brothers, Richard Lambert and Charles Lambert; and sister, Ethel Novak.

Mary "Linda" (Daniels) Diekmann

1943-2018

March 06, 1943 - April 09, 2018

Linda Diekmann, 75, of Austin, Minnesota, died on April 9, 2018, at the Adams Health Care Center after a battle with cancer.

Mary Linda Diekmann was born on March 6, 1943, to Mary Howard and Edsel Daniels in Santa Ana, California. When Linda was still a young child, Howard met and married George Ammerman, and they moved to Graceville, Minnesota. Linda graduated from Graceville High School in 1961. In June of 1962, Linda married Bernard (Bernie) Diekmann from Beardsley, and they moved to Minneapolis. Linda and Bernie had three children together, and Linda took great pride in providing a loving home for them.

Linda had many talents, including sewing, cooking, baking, and painting. Her skills as an organizer benefited the family and several employers. She graduated from Anoka Ramsey Community College in 1991 and worked as a Medical Records Technician for many years until her retirement in 2010.

Linda was preceded in death by her daughter Leigh Diekmann, her parents, Howard and George Ammerman and Edsel Daniels and her siblings Joyce, Dale and Wayne Ammerman.

She will be dearly missed by sons, Brent (and Mary Margaret) Diekmann of Winona, Minnesota, and Darren (and Carla) Diekmann of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota; sister, Trudy (and Dave) Shepard of Waterloo, Iowa, and brother, Dave (and Deb) Ammerman of Graceville, Minnesota. Linda will also be missed by her five grandchildren: Nathan (Kyle) Diekmann of LaCrosse, Bretta Diekmann Thomas of Winona, Joe Diekmann of Winona, Caity (Mark) Heinen of Sartell, and Dylan Diekmann of Sauk Rapids; Linda also had seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 1 pm at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Graceville, Minnesota, on Saturday, April 21, 2018, with visitation from 12 noon-1pm. She will be put to rest at the Graceville Cemetery.

Shirley Marie (Hanson) Saaranen

Obituary for Shirley Marie Saaranen

Shirley Marie (Hanson) Saaranen, age 86, passed away Monday, April 9th, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin, Minnesota, surrounded by her children.

Shirley was born, July 3rd, 1931 in Newry Township, [Freeborn County], Minnesota, to Archie and Hattie (Braaten) Hanson. She grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School on June 2nd, 1949.

On July 31st, 1954, she was married to Gordon M. Saaranen at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, in Austin, Minnesota. She was employed by George A. Hormel and Company for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She and Gordie moved to the Saaranen family farm on Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, where they lived fully for 10 years. In 1996 they moved to St. Ansgar, IA, where they lived until Gordie’s death in October of 2004 after 50 years of marriage. Shirley then returned to Austin, where she resided until her death.

Shirley thrived on spending time with her family. She was an avid reader, and known for her crocheting, holiday turkey dinners and holiday decorating. Her children, grandchildren and many others, share fond memories of playing cards, games and classic Nintendo with her. Her children feel blessed to have grown up in a joyful home, with unconditional love, which provided the feel of a second home to many of their friends.

She is survived by her children Jennifer Saaranen (Jim Huebner), Karen Baldridge, Carol Jean (Dan) Thomas, Fred (Kay) Saaranen, Tim Saaranen (Christy Upchurch); grandchildren Chad (Rachel) Thomas, Sarah Unverzagt, Amanda (Shannon) Schulz, Sam (Bret) Wierson, Michael Saaranen, Elliott Baldridge, Jenna Baldridge, Rachel Saaranen, Megan Saaranen, Kyle Upchurch; great-grand children Dillon, Conner and Charlie Thomas, Scarlett, Brock and Quinn Schulz, Violet, Archie and Henry Wierson; sister-in-law, Lucy Hanson; special nephews, Frank (Nancy) Saaranen, Bob (Nola) Saaranen, Melody Scheffel-Saaranen-Schrag.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordie Saaranen; her parents; three sisters; Hen (Dan) Greenameyer, Katie (Don Sr.) Burgess, and Millie (Doug Sr.) Saaranen; three brothers; John (Addie), Archie (Edith), and Harry Hanson; special nephew Doug Saaranen; grandson Luke Unverzagt.

Shirley Saaranen

Shirley Marie (Hanson) Saaranen, 86, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin, Minnesota, surrounded by her children.

Lenore Margaret McCutchen

Lenore M. McCutchen, age 81, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

She was born October 2, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. Lenore grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School.

Survivors include two brothers, Eugene Etzig, Austin, Minnesota, Ron Lee, Lyle, Minnesota; grandson, Jordan Etzig, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lenore was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Lee; her brother; her son, Steve.

A Memorial Service was held 9:30 am on Friday, April 13, 2018 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Jim Steffes officiating.

C. Ed Hanson

1928-2018

C. Ed Hanson, age 90, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Adams Health Care Center in Adams, Minnesota.

He was born on March 17, 1928, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Austin and Evelyn (Shave) Hanson one of six children. He spent most of his adult life in Austin, working as a surveyor for the City of Austin before retiring in 1983. In August of 1957 he married Patsy Hatch at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin; they had two children. After years of marriage, Ed and Pat divorced. They spent a brief period apart, after which they reconciled, and spent their last years together devoted to one another. When Pat passed away, Ed missed her very much.

He loved to travel in the motorhome and wintered in Arizona. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, working on vehicles and fixing things. Ed was a past member of St. Olaf, and belonged to the Elks, Eagles and Winnebago Motorhome Club. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Survivors include his son Timothy (Filomena) Hanson of Austin; daughter Julie Johnson of Tucson, Arizona; brother, Barney (Margaret) Hanson of Eden Prairie; sisters, Sally (Gene) Gerhart of Brownsdale, Helen Ruth Bartlett of Minneapolis; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Ed is preceded in death by his parents Austin and Evelyn Hanson; wife Patsy Hanson; sister Pat, and brother Stan.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin with Todd Portinga, Associate in Ministry officiating. The Hanson family will greet friends from 9:00-10:00 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Dorothy E. Ackerwold, 93 of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, April 11th at Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 16th at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Intern Pastor Anders Nelson officiating. Private family interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and at the church on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.

Dorothy Ackerwold

Dorothy Ackerwold, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at Thorne Crest Health Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Dorothy was born March 14, 1925, at Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, the daughter of the Rev. John C. and Ragna Walledom. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to New Richland, Minnesota. Dorothy was a graduate of New Richland High School and went on to St. Olaf College, graduating with a major in sociology. Following graduation, she worked for a year at the Lutheran Inner Mission Society of Brooklyn, New York, and later placed children for adoption with Lutheran Children’s Friends Society in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1954, she and Robert Ackerwold were married. They lived in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, until 1962, when they moved to Austin with their three children. Dorothy was a devoted mom and grandma and was also active in various organizations, including Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, League of Women Voters, AAUW, Red Cross Gray Ladies and hospital auxiliary. From 1972-87, Dorothy worked as a library assistant at Sumner Elementary School. She and Bob then enjoyed many years of retirement together. Dorothy enjoyed gardening and baking, but she enjoyed being with people most of all.

Dorothy is survived by daughter, Kari Bain of Austin; son, Robert Ackerwold of Norwood Young America, Minnesota; daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Neal Erickson of Austin; nine grandchildren, Eric Bain (Jessie), Jonathan Bain (Kelly), Daniel Ackerwold (Tina), Megan Larsen (Darren), Sarah Bain, Thomas Ackerwold, Annie Erickson, Laura Ackerwold and Tim Erickson; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Bain, Ian Bain, Levi Larsen and Mika Bain; nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents; brothers, Melvin (Bud) and John Walledom; sister, Lois Rollefson; and son-in-law, Ian Bain.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 16, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Intern Pastor Anders Nelson officiating. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and one hour before the service on Monday at the church.

A private family interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery prior to the service. Memorials may be designated to Lutheran Social Services or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Nels George Jorgenson

1931-2018

Nels George Jorgenson, age 87, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

Nels was born January 13, 1931, in Austin, Minnesota, to Nels and Alice (Carew) Jorgenson. He grew up in Austin and attended St. Augustine Parochial School. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War from February 7, 1952 till his honorable discharge November 1, 1953.

On July 2, 1955, Nels married Bonnie Moe at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Together, they had seven children. They made their home in Austin, where he worked for Hormel Foods for 36 years retiring in 1986. Nels was a lifelong member of St. Edward’s in Austin. He enjoyed woodworking.

Herman George Hormel II

1930-2018

U.S. VETERAN

Herman “Herm” George Hormel II, 87, passed from this earth on March 28, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus-Rochester, Minnesota, surrounded by his loving wife and family just six days shy of his 88th birthday.

He was born April 3, 1930, in Austin, Minnesota, the youngest of three children born to Donald and Olive (Blondell) Hormel. He attended St. James School for Boys in Faribault, Minnesota, and graduated from Austin High School.

While in high school, he was active in his church and volunteered at the Red Lake Indian Reservation, teaching Sunday school and helping to repair homes in the area. Following his high school graduation, Herman attended Macalester College for two years, but chose to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. While in the Air Force, Herman was a radio operator and navigation instructor. In 1951, he married the love of his life, Kirsten (Aune) Hormel. Two of their daughters, Kari and Gretchen, were born during their time at Nellis Air Force Base.

Following his years in the Air Force, Herman and his family moved back home to Minnesota, settling in Minneapolis. Following graduation from the University of Minnesota, Herman worked as a parole officer and social worker. Herman always had a love of music and photography. While in Minneapolis, he played folk and classical guitar in small cafes.

Following a move to Faribault, he worked at the Faribault State Hospital. He also taught Sunday school at the Cathedral of our Merciful Savior, working with the youth group. Soon after moving to Faribault, they welcomed another girl, Kirsten, to the family.

In the 1960s, Herman’s career changed from social work to teaching, and he began teaching at St Mary’s Hall in Faribault. He taught there for five years, then continued teaching in Episcopal schools in Gates Mills, Ohio, and Memphis, Tennessee. In 1979, Herman and Kirsten made their home in Rochester, Minnesota, and were active members of St. Luke’s and Calvary Episcopal churches. He then began work as a program director at Hiawatha Homes. He loved his work there with the children and staff. Herman was a kind and gentle spirit, always supportive of family and friends and never spoke ill of others. Throughout his lifetime, he welcomed many pets into their home, often strays.

Herman is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kirsten Aune Hormel; daughters, Kari (Mason) Ouderkirk, Gretchen (Dennis) Davey and Kirsten (Richard) Vitale; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Olive Hormel; and his sisters, Mary (Hormel) Moss and Helen (Hormel) Johnson.

His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Rochester. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Calvary Episcopal Church Sunday School.

Eileen Joanne Sheedy - Obituary

Eileen J. Sheedy, age 76 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2018 at St. Mark’s Living in Austin.

Eileen Joanne was born on July 27, 1941 to James and Esther (Lysne) Dalager in Austin, Minnesota. She graduated from Blooming Prairie High School with the Class of 1959. Eileen was united in marriage to John “Jack” Sheedy on June 14, 1959 at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church in rural Austin, Minnesota. Together the couple raised two children. Eileen was a homemaker, and for many years worked as a CNA at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.

She enjoyed crocheting and crafting. Eileen and Jack together enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, fishing and family trips to Leech Lake. She was a longtime member of Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church where she was active in Naomi Circle, and taught Sunday school.

Eileen is survived by her children Lori (Greg) Stackhouse of Hayfield and David (Connie) Sheedy of Little Elm, Texas; three grandchildren, Blaine (Katherine) Stackhouse of Hayfield, JB Stackhouse of Hayfield and Cheyenne Redfearn of Lewisville, Texas; parents James and Esther Dalager of Austin brother Darrell Dalager of Savage; sister-in-law JoAnn (Richard) Tufte of Austin; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband John “Jack” Sheedy on November 7, 2017; sister-in-law Judy Dalager.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church in rural Austin with Pastor Lindsey Stolen officiating. Obituary

Joyce D. Flink, age 60, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 12, 2018 surrounded by her family at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.

Joyce Diane was born May 30, 1957, in Austin, Minnesota to Elmer and Dorothy (Bender) Lee. She grew up in Austin and graduated with the Class of 1976 from Austin High School.

On March 11, 1978, she was united in marriage to James Perry Flink at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin. Joyce and Jim were married for 40 wonderful years, and to this union two sons were born. Joyce was a homemaker and enjoyed raising her family in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Joyce enjoyed bowling, needle work, and scrapbooking for her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Joyce is survived by her husband James of Albert Lea; sons Jeremy E. Flink, Jeffrey (Kelly) Flink, and her grandchildren Jarrett, Joselyn and Holger, all of Albert Lea; step mother Phyllis Lee of Austin; siblings Judy (Donald) Jacobsen of Austin, Edwin (Judy) Lee of Bixby, Sheila Blacketer of Rochester, Shirley (Rick) Nelson of Austin, Dennis Lee of Waseca, Dale (Julie) Lee of Madison Lake, David (Brenda) Lee of Waseca; by many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Robert Edward Blahnik

1945-2018

June 22, 1945 - April 9, 2018 (age 72)

Robert "Bob" Blahnik, age 72, of Spring Valley passed away Monday April 9, 2018, at his home.

Funeral services for Bob Blahnik will be held 10:30 am Friday April 13, 2018 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, with Father Marreddy Pothireddy officiating. Burial will take place at the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery. Rosary service will be at 4:45 p.m. with visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday April 12 at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Robert Edward Blahnik was born June 22, 1945 in Austin, Minnesota, to Fred and Catherine (Snyder) Blahnik. He grew up on a dairy farm near Spring Valley and graduated from Spring Valley High School. Bob enrolled at Rochester Junior College before attending and graduating from Winona State University in 1967 with a teaching degree in education. He worked in the Byron School District teaching Civics, American History, and Drivers Ed. for a couple years. Bob realized he wanted to further his education so he enrolled at the University of Iowa to study law. He started his law career working for Clem Snyder in Preston in 1972. From 1976 to 1987 Bob dedicated his skills as the “country lawyer” for Spring Valley. In 1987 he merged his practice with Baulder, Baulder, and Maus law firm until retirement in 2011.

On May 5, 1973 he was united in marriage to Patricia Boucsein at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley. Bob enjoyed spending time on his farm, fishing, and reading Western novels. He was a good conversationalist and was respected and trusted by all. Bob loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandkids. He was an active member at St. Ignatius Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Bob was also a member on the Nursing Home Board and Spring Valley Mutual Insurance.

Bob is survived by his wife Patricia “Pat” of Spring Valley; children: James (Terri) Blahnik of Mankato, MN, Joel (Tonya) Blahnik of Rochester, MN, Jon Blahnik of Owatonna, MN, Shannon (Kent) Bezdicek of Hokah, MN, and Emily Blahnik of Rochester; two grandchildren: Jacob and Andrew; three step-grandchildren: Matthew, Marshall and Mason; siblings: Rose Van Kirk of Spring Valley, MN, Richard (Sheila) Blahnik of Winona, MN, Roger Blahnik of North Branch, MN, and Tom (Jackie) Blahnik of St. Charles, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Catherine Ann (Balsley) Wigant

1924-2018

Catherine Ann Wigant, 93, died on February 1, 2018, at St. Mark’s Memory Care in Austin, Minnesota.

Catherine was born on April 24, 1924, in Orchard, Iowa, to Alfred Dennis and Almeda Marie Balsley. She graduated from Orchard High School in the class of 1941. As valedictorian of her small class, she was awarded a scholarship, which she gave to another classmate. Catherine worked at an egg factory and at the Oliver Tractor until her marriage.

She married Raymond William Wigant on January 18, 1945, at the Congregational Church in Orchard. As an Army bride, she lived in Georgia with Ray until his discharge. They came back to Austin, where Catherine worked at Nelson’s Supermarket and at the Piggly Wiggly store. Catherine and Raymond celebrated 64 years or marriage. To that union, they had four children: Raymond Alan, Ruth Ann, Brenda Joy and Wendy Fay.

Catherine was one of the oldest members of the Austin Church of Christ, having joined in 1946. Catherine and Raymond spent 24 winters in Hawaii and enjoyed other travels as well. In her spare time, Catherine enjoyed square dancing, yard work and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Alan and Pam Wigant, Centerton, Arkansas; daughters and son-in-law, Brenda and Eddie Brekke, Spring Valley, Minnesota, and Wendy Arnett and special friend Al Smith, Austin; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Serleth, Las Vegas, Nevada, Mildred Whitcomb, Austin, and Barb Grinstead, Austin; numerous nieces and nephews; and other extended family.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; brother, Alfred Junior Balsley; and daughter, Ruth Ann Langohr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the Austin Church of Christ.

Melvin C. Bawek

1929-2018

Melvin C. Bawek, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus-Rochester on Friday, April 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Melvin was born in Windom Township, Minnesota, outside of Austin, on Sept. 8, 1929, to Benjamin and Theresa (King) Bawek. He grew up on the family farm and attended Austin area schools. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Melvin was employed by Hormel Foods Corporation and retired from the company after nearly 40 years. His life focused on family, friends and faith. Among Mel’s favorite pastimes were playing golf, riding his scooter around Austin, attending church at St. Augustine, where he was a lifelong member, and attending functions at the many clubs he belonged to, including the Moose, Eagles, Elks, VFW and American Legion. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Pat Rabideau of Austin, Rick (Judy) Bawek of Lakeville, Minnesota, Lisa Thomas of Austin, and Diane “Deetz” Spaid (Bawek) of Austin; six grandchildren, Amy, Travis, Brandi, Mark, Tyson, and Ingrid; 13 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Ronald, Leo, Darlene and Janet; brother-in-law, Jack Guintire; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Rasmussen; many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Theresa Bawek; his wife, Julianne Bawek; and seven of his 11 siblings, Gilbert, Alice, Lurena, Bob, Eugene, Laverne and Norbert.

Visitation will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, followed by a prayer service. Private interment will take place at a later date. Jerald Louis "Jerry" Faber

March 15, 1943 - April 14, 2018 (age 75)

Jerald “Jerry” Louis Faber, the son of Harold and Mariel (Rappe) Faber, was born in Austin, MN on March 15, 1943. He graduated from Austin High School in 1961. Jerry met Kay Wussow in Austin, MN and together they were united in marriage on February 2, 1963 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin, MN. In 1972 they moved to Alexandria where they raised their three children Chris, Dave and Paula. Jerry worked in the trucking industry most of his life. He owned and operated JK3 trucking for many years. Jerry traveled the entire lower 48 states and Canada, logging more than 3 million miles, mostly accident free.

During Jerry’s younger years, he enjoyed taking his kids deer hunting up north and fishing in Canada. Later in Jerry’s life he liked spending time at his hobby ranch in Deer Creek. He also enjoyed reading. Jerry loved his grandchildren and was always interested in their hobbies, sports, and careers. Fond memories of Jerry will be of him telling stories of his travels around the country and of him listening to Twins Baseball on the radio.

Jerry L. Faber died on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Knute Nelson at the age of 75 years old. He is survived by his children, Chris Faber (Julie Cassell) of Alexandria, Dave Faber of Miltona and (Lori Rehovsky), and Paula Faber of Brandon; eight grandchildren, Ashlee (Cory) Abers, Jenell Faber, Chase Faber, Allison Sturges, Cody Faber, Jenna Sturges, Danielle Faber, and Marissa Sturges; brother, Larry (Gayle) Faber of Austin; sisters, Diane (Terry) Barnett of Austin and Cindi D’Ambrosio of New Jersey; nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Kay Faber and his granddaughter Alanah Faber.

Roger Allen Pump

1946-2018

Roger Allen Pump, 71, of Hartselle, Alabama, died on April 10, 2018, at the University of Alabama Hospital.

Roger was born on June 16, 1946, in Austin, Minnesota, and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1964. In his adult life, he lived in several states and worked in transportation. He enjoyed playing golf and working in his garden. Roger was a very friendly man who “never met a stranger” and always had a smile on his face. He retired in Hartselle with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, Lynnette Pump; a daughter, Shanna Nichols from Hemet, California; a son, Cody from Hartselle; three grandchildren, Natalie Dove, Melanie Nichols, and Glenn Christian; one great-grandchild, Kayden; three sisters, Betty Osmonson from Austin, Teddy (Tom) Muyres from Fleming Island, Florida, and Patty (Duane) Anderson from Champlin, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Margaret Pump; two sisters, Beverly Jean Pump and Mary Lou Hubbard; and a son-in-law, William Nichols.

Roger chose to donate his body to science and The Science Care Organization is planting a tree in Colorado in honor of Roger.

Obituary

Larry Allen Kraushaar, age 57, of rural Glenville, Minnesota, died suddenly Monday, April 16, 2018 at his workplace in Austin, Minnesota.

Larry was born April 29, 1960 to LeMoyne and Gloria Louise (Thompson) Kraushaar. He attended Austin High School, graduating in 1978. After high school, Larry farmed with his father for 20 years, and then returned to school at Albert Lea Vocational College in the mechanical program.

On June 17, 1995, Larry married Michele Kay Mickelsen at the Chapel of Love in the Mall of America, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Together, they had two sons.

Larry worked for Hormel Foods in Austin in the rendering area. He also helped his sons with their Pinewood Derby Cars. He was known as “best at his craft” and “the tool man”. Larry recently began participating in recreational shooting. He loved his dog “Zeus” and his Jeep very much. Larry was always willing to give blood at the blood bank. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Steven Brian Nolte

Obituary

Steven Brian Nolte, age 66 of Dexter, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. Steve was born on March 2, 1952 in Austin, Minnesota to Irvin and Jeanette (Dickens) Nolte. He was homeschooled until high school, graduating from Elkton High School in 1970. Steven grew up and lived in Dexter all his life.

He met the love of his life Barb Grzanek on May 28, 1987, and then they later married on September 12, 1998 in Dexter. He worked 19 years at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota. He, his father, and his three brothers all worked at IBM at the same time. Steve was always determined; he liked woodworking and would make plant stands for people. Steve and Barb would try travel once a year to Duluth for their anniversaries, where they loved watching the ships on Lake Superior. He was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, and fishing. Steve also went to many sports games in the area to watch his nieces and nephews. He filled his free time with cooking for people; one of his specialties was making a turkey on the grill.

Steve was a lifelong member of the Dexter United Methodist Church. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Nolte of Dexter, Minnesota; sisters-in-law Georgie Nolte of Spring Valley, Minnesota, and Linda Nolte of Dexter, Minnesota; aunt Ione (Kenneth) Dippel of Austin, Minnesota; 7 nieces and nephews Gale, Amy, Brenda, Nancy, Jeff, Jennifer, and Chad. He was preceded in death by his parents Irvin and Jeanette Nolte, brothers Jim in 2010, Jerry in 2012, and Jon in 2017.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at the Dexter United Methodist Church with Pastor Jon Marburger officiating. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Shirley Mae (Hanson) Jan

1931-2018

Shirley Mae Jan, 86, passed away from natural causes on December 1, 2017, at the Annapolitan Assisted Living Center in Annapolis, Maryland, after a courageous multi-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Shirley was born on May 9, 1931, in Austin, Minnesota, to Corrie and Ruth Bagley Hanson. She grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in 1949. After high school, she attended one-year of x-ray technician training at Minneapolis General Hospital.

Shirley married Lloyd V. Jan, in 1951, in Austin. As the mother of five children and the wife of a U.S. Army Green Beret, Shirley traveled the globe for 20 years, living at numerous Army bases across the U.S, France and Japan. She worked as a certified chiropractic assistant in Severna Park, Maryland, for nearly a decade and completed her career as a medical record transcriptionist in Annapolis.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd V. Jan, MAJ USA, of Severna Park; her son, Kolin M. Jan, CAPT USN, of Ridgeley, West Virginia; her daughter, Karen R. Jan of West Palm Beach, Florida; and her granddaughter, Jessica Hill of Lorton, Virginia.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Lisa Jan of McHenry, Maryland; her daughter, MaryEllen Seehafer, and her husband, Erich Seehafer, of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; her son, Eric Jan, and his wife, Deborah Jan, of Annapolis; her grandchildren, Bryan Jan, Lauren Kichinko, Reade Harbitter, Evin Urban, Roxanne Harbitter, Lieutenant Ryan Jan, USAF, Ensign Kaitlyn Jan, USN, and Kelly Jan; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Charlotte Braaten of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; and her brother, Raeburn Hanson, and his wife, Patricia Hanson, of Waltham, Minnesota.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Red Oak Grove Church in Austin. Shirley wished to be cremated and buried next to her husband, Lloyd, at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Marjorie Ann (Bell) Lau

1935-2018

April 28, 1935 - April 20, 2018

Marjorie Ann Lau, 82 of Austin, Minnesota, died at her home on Friday, April 20, 2018.

Marjorie was born April 28, 1935, in Lyle, Minnesota to Verne and Ethel (Nelson) Bell. She graduated from Lyle High School in 1953 and on April 28, 1954, she married Arvid “Bud” Lau in Lyle.

She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine. She was known as “the rock and heart” of her family. She provided many hours of care for her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her listening ear will always be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jane.

Marjorie is survived and truly missed by her husband, Arvid “Bud” Lau, Austin, MN; sons, Doug Lau, Albert Lea, MN and Tim (Amy) Lau, Austin, MN; grandsons, Jeremy Lau and Aaron Lau; granddaughter, Emilee Lau; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Grace Lau; sister, Carol (Oscar) Huff, Austin, MN; brother, David (Carolyn) Bell, Albert Lea, MN; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 24th at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Leonard William Beckel

1929-2018

Obituary for Leonard William Beckel

Leonard Beckel, age 88, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away February 1, 2018 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Leonard was born November 29, 1929 in Austin to Harvey and Marian (Phillips) Beckel. He graduated from Austin High School in 1948 and from Austin State Junior College in 1950. He attended the University of Minnesota prior to joining the Air Force in 1951.

While in the Air Force, he was a fighter jet pilot serving in the Korean War. After the war ended, he was stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, where he was a Flight Instructor and Gunnery Instructor. He left active duty in October, 1955 but continued his service in the Air Force Reserve. He was the Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy retiring at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was very fortunate to attend many reunions with members of his 52-G class.

Leonard started working after his high school graduation for Hormel Foods as a cost test clerk. He retired from Hormel Foods in January, 1992, as the Corporate Director of Purchasing.

On January 16, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Anne Jones. To this marriage they added six children. After retirement, they moved to their lake home in Northern Minnesota. They also spent their winters in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Leonard was the past president of the Austin Country Club, a member of the American Legion, the Austin Development Corporation, the Austin Jaycees, and the Big Mantrap Lake Association. He enjoyed hunting ducks and pheasants as well as trap shooting. He had a knack for being the “foreman” of any building project going on—his own, the neighbors’ or his children’s—making sure everything was done correctly.

Leonard is survived by his children: Jeni (Brad) Lindberg, Austin, MN; Greg Beckel, New Hope, MN; Laura Rasmussen (Tom Schmidt), Vacaville, CA; Tony (Julie) Beckel, Woodbury, MN; and Andy (Paula) Beckel, Lakeville, MN. He is also survived by Sally Wilson, sister-in-law and significant other; sister, Dorothy McMichael; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Jane Jones; daughter-in-law, Laurie Beckel; grandchildren: Scott (Nicole) Lindberg, Michael Lindberg, Nathan Beckel, Yaisa (Nathan) Banek, Jack Beckel, Kate Beckel, Allison Beckel, Kristin Beckel; great-grandchildren: Camille Lindberg, Avery Greene, Elliot and Jonas Cates, Mya, Lise and Luka Banek; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anne, in 2000; son, Jeff, in 2003; and brother-in-law, Lloyd “Mike” McMichael.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Steven McMichael and Father Raul Silva officiating. Friends may call from 4-7 pm on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Mayer Funeral Home. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Honor Flight of Minnesota, Wounded Warrior Project or the charity of your choice.

Norma Jane Mullenbach

Norma Jane Mullenbach, 60 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Norma was born September 13, 1957, in Osage, Iowa, to Norbert J. and Alice (Klapperich) Mullenbach. She grew up in Johnsburg, Minnesota, and graduated from Adams High School in 1975.

Norma loved spending time in her garden and playing cards. If you stopped by to visit, you could plan on at least one game of cribbage or Skip-bo. She was such a generous soul that had time for anyone that needed a kind, listening ear. Her love of animals was widely known, as she took her dogs with her as many places as she could.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Samuel and Mathias, and her nephew, Calvin Mayer.

Norma is survived by her sisters, Linda (James) Wagner, Osage, Iowa; Sharon Mullenbach, Austin, MN; Ann (Joe) Mayer, Stacyville, Iowa; and brother, Mark Mullenbach, Austin, Minnesota; five nephews, four nieces, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

A private family interment will be held.

Obituary for Irene Alice McGee

September 23, 1920 - December 28, 2017

Irene Alice McGee, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at the age of 97.

Irene Alice Cummings was born September 23, 1920, in Elma, Iowa to Francis Emmett and Mary Evelyn (Harris) Cummings. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school with her four sisters and six brothers.

She met the love of her life, Bernard J. McGee, at a dance in Cresco, Iowa. Rene corresponded with Bernard during the years he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, while she was working at a munitions factory in California and later at a company in Waterloo, Iowa. Bernard and Rene were married on May 6, 1947 in Cresco, Iowa and moved to Austin, Minnesota where Bernard pursued a career in carpentry and Rene worked at the Canton Café.

In June of 1948 they welcomed their first born, James M. McGee and a short year later their daughter, Susan in May of 1949 and soon to follow, Ann, in December of 1951 and Mary, in December of 1952.

Rene was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Along with the Canton Café, she also worked at the Austin Bowl. Rene was a member of the “Sewing Club” along with several friends and neighbors.

Survivors include her four children, James (Sheri) McGee, Susan Bothun, and Ann McGee, all of Austin, MN, Mary Huemann of Albert Lea, MN; grandchildren, Carmen (Jeff) Weber of Menasha, WI, Skot (Heide) McGee of Austin, MN, Michael J. (Theresa) Merten and Kelly (Brian) Walton of Texas, Brad (Candice) Bothun of Annapolis, MD, Lindsey (Kevin) Haney and Kelly and Ryan Lamont of Austin, MN; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Margaret Burkett of Cresco, IA; sisters-in-law, Diane Cummings of Iowa and Doris Cummings of McIntire, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Bernard J. McGee on November 27, 2017; brothers, Donald (Bernetta), George, William (Agnes), Thomas, Richard (Marlene), and James Cummings; sisters, Marie (Dan) O’Neil, Geneva (Art) Peckham, Edna (Milton) Miller; brother-in-law, Marvin Burkett; McGee brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leo (Olive), Paul (Angie), Emmett (Doris), and Dan McGee, Vera (Bennie) Ulwelling, Esther (Ben) Roberts, Rozella (Ruben) Skogeboe, and Lucille (Clarence) Peterson; sons-in-law, Peter Merten, Vaughn Bothun, and Stan Coughlin.

Roger Alan Kehret

1942-2018

Roger Alan Kehret, 75, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, passed away ondd April 19, 2018, in Mountain Home.

He was born on July 28, 1942, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Matilda Moltz Kehret. He married Lynn Schultz Harrison on June 15, 1990, in Lake City, Minnesota. He was an earth science high school teacher with a bachelor’s of science degree. Roger lived in Mountain Home since 2012, moving from Austin. While living in Minnesota, Roger was a key figure in the development of Mystery Cave in southern Minnesota. He was an author of several books on caving.

Roger is survived by his wife, Lynn Kehret of Mountain Home; two daughters, Shelly (Craig) Bell of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Kathy (John) Hines of Hopkins, Minnesota; three brothers, Vern (Virginia) Kehret of Austin, Bruce (Sue) Kehret of Moses Lake, Washington, and Jerry (Carolyn) Kehret of Norwalk, Iowa: 11 grandchildren; sister-in-law, Peg Kehret of Wilkeson, Washington; and four stepchildren, Tammy Harrison of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kelly Rukavina of Cedar City, Utah, Scott Harrison of Rochester, Minnesota, and Tim Harrison of Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Carl Kehret.

Larry Do, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

He was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Hanoi, Vietnam, the son of Hoa Do and Mui Tran. On Dec. 25, 1972, Larry married Tam Huynh in Vung Tau, Vietnam. Larry moved to the United States in 1996 and his family followed 10 years later. While living in Austin, he was employed by Quality Pork Processors.

Survivors include his wife, Tam Huynh of Austin; his children, Trung Do and Thanh Do of Vietnam, Tien Do, Toi Do, and Trinh Do of Austin, Tung Do of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Tan Do of Phoenix, Arizona, Ha Do, Minh Do, Ngoc Do, Nga Do, Thuy Do, and Binh Do of Binh Long, Vietnam; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother, Kien Do of Hanoi; and his former wife, Nguyen Dung of Binh Long. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Ronald “Dwight” Ault, 87

It is with great sadness that the family of Ronald “Dwight” Ault, 87, announces his passing after a long battle with dementia. Dwight passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2017, surrounded by his family.

Dwight was born to parents Cassie and C.G. Ault on June 6, 1930, on his home farm in Bayard, Iowa. He grew up with his older brothers Joe and Louis, enjoying farm life in Iowa. He graduated from Bayard High School in 1948 and served for two years in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Iowa State University in agronomy in 1957. Iowa State is where he met Becky. They were married in 1957. He began a career in agriculture as an assistant county agent in Albert Lea, Minnesota. As his childhood on the farm was so impactful, Dwight decided to go into farming himself in 1961 in Scranton, Iowa, near his home farm. They had four children during this time. He and Becky bought their farm in Austin, Minnesota, in 1970 and it is there that the family resided.

Dwight was an avid conservationist and was a pioneer in the sustainable agriculture movement. He worked with many environmental organizations in this arena and was on the boards of both the Minnesota Food Association as well as the Land Stewardship Project for many years, as well as being active with the Animal Welfare Institute, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Izaak Walton League, Farmers Union and the Union of Concerned Scientists. He dedicated his life to the care of the Earth and the welfare of farm animals. His legacy will live on for many years.

Dwight will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Becky; their children, Kurt (Lynn), David (Lisa), Grant, and Melissa (John); seven grandchildren, Erin (Blake), Megan (Andy), Anna, Andy, Erik, Ian and Thalie; and three great-grandchildren, Laken, Micah and Holden.

A memorial service in memory of Dwight will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Austin with the Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Roger Allen Schaefer, 68

Roger Allen Schaefer, 68, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, April 26, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Roger was born July 8, 1949, in Austin, to Wilfred and Isabel (Giles) Schaefer. He grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School.

On Oct. 19, 1968, he was united in marriage to Marlene Christopherson. To this union, seven children were born. The couple later divorced. Roger made his career working at Hormel Foods as a general laborer. He retired in 2013 after 29 years with the company.

Roger was a devoted hockey coach in Austin for over 50 years. He enjoyed telling stories about his hockey players. Roger was well known for his “roger-isms.” Hockey was one of Roger’s true passions; his legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren.

Roger loved fishing, especially at Whitefish Lake, were his family has been going for 50 years. Roger would go fishing with anyone who wanted to wet a line, but he especially loved sharing the boat with his brother, Wheels. He went up to the lake every chance he could. Roger was able to get in his fishing, cribbage and quality family time. He also enjoyed his annual deer-hunting trip to Lanesboro, Minnesota, with the boys. Roger loved spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and would light up when they were around.

Survivors include his children, Tim (Lynn), Terry (Lisa), Troy (Kat), Becky (Chad) Rasmussen, Brandon (Tami), Bryan (Kylene) and Beth (Derek) Laskewitz; 17 grandchildren; brothers, Dave (Connie) and Joe (Penny); sisters, Nancy (Brad) King and Lori (Ron) Jacobs; and significant other, Jan Spriggs.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Isabel; brother, Bruce; and brother in-law and sister in-law; Larry and Diane Christopherson.

Roger will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The world will be a lot less bright without Roger in it. The Schaefer family would like to extend our thanks to Heartland Hospice. The care that was provided exceeded expectations and we are forever grateful for your services.

Lillian M. Grundmeier, 101, died on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Elderwood Assisted Living in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Lillian Marie (Klaehn) Grundmeier was born in Marshall Township, Mower County, near Elkton, Minnesota, on Sept. 19, 1916, to Frank and Irene (Rothenburger) Klaehn. She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church near Elkton. She grew up and attended school in Elkton and graduated as valedictorian of her class. She became a country schoolteacher in Mower County and, in later years, Kanabec County.

She married Roy Grundmeier on August 23, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church near Elkton. That marriage lasted 66 years. They farmed near Elkton, Grand Meadow, Minnesota, Dexter, Minnesota, and Sandstone, Minnesota (Dell Grove Township). In 1998, she and her husband moved to the Sandstone Square Apartments. After enjoying many years with friends there, she moved to Elderwood Assisted Living in Hinckley, where she lived until her death.

She had a love of the country and beauty of the outdoors and a strong Christian faith. She was a member of Emmanuel Dell Grove and Grace Lutheran Churches. After teaching, she worked as a clerk in Drilling’s Coast to Coast store, as a secretary at Watrin’s Distributing, clerk of Dell Grove Township and a dedicated volunteer of the church. She was employed by Frank Loken and Jean Boyer as a tax preparer.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers; one sister; a grandson; nephew; niece; and many relatives and friends.

She is survived by two sons, Frank (Jane) of Hinckley and Larry of Austin, Minnesota; four grandsons, Joel (Julie) of Forest Lake, Minnesota, Eric (special friend Rhonda) of Lakewood, Colorado, Bret (Cheryl) of Hinckley and Todd (Gina) of Dexter: nine great-grandchildren, Wade, Kari, Dean, Ryan, Megan, Holly, Lori, Wyatt and Raeann; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Emma and Madison; several cousins; nephews, nieces and their families; and a host of wonderful friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Dell Grove, Minnesota, with the Rev. Kim Sturtz officiating. Music for the service will be provided by Nathan Frazer. Casketbearers are Wade Grundmeier, Kari Grundmeier, Dean Grundmeier, Ryan Grundmeier, Megan Grundmeier, Holly Grundmeier, Lori Grundmeier, Wyatt Grundmeier, Raeann Grundmeier, Emma Waters and Madison Sladek. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Dell Grove. Arrangements by Methven Funeral Home.
