Marjorie Ellen (Larson) Olson 1930-2018
Marjorie Ellen Olson, 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family
and friends on Jan. 25 at Wildwood Grove in LeRoy, Minnesota.
Marjorie was born November 22, 1930, to Floyd and Nellie (Liddy) Larson
in LeRoy. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Church in LeRoy
and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1948. She was joined in marriage
to Donald Olson on June 20, 1953, at St. Patrick’s Church, and from this
marriage they had four sons: Robert, William, James, and Thomas and one
daughter, Nancy.
Marjorie was a long time member of the St. Patricks’ Altar Society,
where she served as secretary-treasurer for several years.
Marjorie’s real passion was her family. She truly enjoyed babysitting
her grandchildren.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Donald, and children Robert (Lynn)
Olson of LeRoy, William (Bobbi) Olson of Byron, Minnesota, James (Debra)
Olson of Ostrander, Minnesota, and Nancy Olson of LeRoy, Minnesota;
grandchildren Jessica (Tyler) Hartman, Kirk (Janelle) Olson, Maggie
Olson, Brady Olson, Breanna (Cole) Resleff, Brittlyn (Taylor) Kunkel,
Dylan and Thomas Mackey; and five great-grandchildren.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Thomas.
Funeral service for Majorie will be held at 11 a.m.Tuesday, Jan. 30,
2018, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in LeRoy with Father Marreddy
officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm at St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church on Monday, Jan. 29 and will continue at the church for one hour
prior to the service on Tuesday.

Dixie Joann Hanson
April 17, 1937 - January 16, 2018
Dixie J. Hanson, 80 of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, January 16,
2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospitals – St. Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dixie was born on April 17, 1937 in Austin, Minnesota to Richard and
Frieda (Douglas) Downs and attended Austin Public Schools. Dixie married
William Hanson on November 17, 1956 in Chickasaw County, Iowa. They made
their home in Austin where she was a homemaker and raised their nine
children. Later, she worked in customer service at Walmart.
Dixie was a member of First United Methodist Church and she was active
in the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing Bingo and slots.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William in 1995; a
grandson, four sisters and a son-in-law, Robert King.
Dixie is survived by her children: Mitchell Hanson, Glen Flora, WI,
LaNora King, Austin, MN, Mark Hanson, Austin, MN, Jeannie Hanson, Austin,
MN, Carrol Amrich, Pueblo, CO, Nancy Hanson, Kensett, IA, Willis Hanson,
Austin, MN, Denise (Scott) Kamp, Austin, MN, and Suzette (Mike) Raimann,
Austin, MN; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 22nd at
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Reverend Shari Mason officiating.
Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday
one hour before the service.

Douglas Raymond Benson 1950-2018
Douglas Raymond Benson, 67, of Oakland, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday,
January 17, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin, Minnesota.
Doug was born February 1, 1950, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Raymond
and Elaine (Hassing) Benson. He attended country school and graduated with
the Class of 1968 from Austin High School. Doug went on to attend Austin Area
Vocational Technical Institute, where he studied auto repair. He served
his country for six years with the Minnesota National Guard. Doug loved
his lifelong career in farming. He was a historian, especially with
firearms and American history. He also enjoyed horseback riding and
coffee time with his old and new friends at the Austin HyVee. He will
be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include the love of his life and partner, Sandra Flim of
Oakland; sisters Jeanne (John Drake) Busse of Owatonna, Minnesota, and
Jayne (Steve) Sigurdson of Albert Lea, Minnesota; nieces, Stephanie and
Anna; and great-niece, Ireland. Doug was preceded in death by his parents;
his brother, Richard “Ace” Benson; his niece, Hannah; and other extended
family members.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at
the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with the Rev. Daphne Hamborg
officiating. Military honors by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216
will immediately follow the service. Visitation will be held at 9-11 a.m.
on Monday prior to the service at Worlein Funeral Home. Interment will be
in Fairview Cemetery in Oakland. Services are prearranged and performed
by the Worlein Funeral Home of Austin. Condolences may be expressed to

Wanda Medelia (Attig) Hemann 1925-2017
Wanda M. Hemann, 91, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Our House
Senior Living and Memory Care in Austin, Minnesota.
Wanda Medelia (Attig) Hemann was born on Aug. 6, 1925, in Freeborn
County to Adam and Olga (Heraldson) Attig. She grew up outside of Albert
Lea, Minnesota, on the family farm and attended Albert Lea Schools. On
March 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Hendrick Monson. To this
union five children were born. Hendrick passed away in 1966. Wanda
married Alfred Hemann in 1968, and the couple would later divorce.
Wanda worked at Land O’ Lakes in Albert Lea for a number of years. When
she moved to Austin, she worked at St. Mark’s Nursing Home as Nurse’s Aide
for over 20 years. She was a member of Central Freeborn Lutheran Church in
rural Albert Lea, and later St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. She was
active in the VFW Auxiliary and was also a part of the Lady Bugs – a
local dance organization. Wanda enjoyed reading, walking, fishing,
camping, music, and she loved to dance. She liked playing card games
with her friends and family. Wanda loved spending time with her family,
especially her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by both parents; first husband, Hendrik Monson;
sister, Genieva Olson; brother, Dale Attig; and grandson in-law, Tommy
Brewer.
Wanda is survived by her five children, LeAnn (Roger) Trolen of Twin
Lakes, Minnesota, Eldon Monson and significant other, LeAnn Prihoda of
Albert Lea, Marcelene (Phillip) Ziegenhagen of Owatonna, Minnesota,
Julaine (Delbert) Simpson of Albert Lea, and Helen (Robert) Zeise of
Faribault, Minnesota; grandchildren, Dylan, Rainya, Nels, Brittany,
and Rachel; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harry (Louise)
Attig of Gordonsville, Minnesota; along with many other loving relatives.
A private family funeral services was held. Bonnerup Funeral Service
assisted the family.

Gary Wayne Buzzard 1961-2018
Gary Wayne Buzzard, 56, of Mankato, Minnesota, died suddenly in his
home on Jan. 19, 2018.
He was born in Austin, Minnesota, on April 5, 1961, to parents Phyllis
(Hanson) and Gary Buzzard. He graduated from Austin High School in 1979
and attended Bethany Lutheran College, graduating in 1981. He later went
on to Mankato State University, where he graduated in 1985. He spent his
high school and college years active with wrestling and student council,
serving as Senior Class President in high school.
It was at Bethany Lutheran College where he met his wife of 30 years,
Linda Nelson. They were married on March 10, 1982, and had three children,
Alan, Ashley and Andrew. They were later divorced. Gary worked at various
jobs throughout his lifetime, including welding and boiler operation. He
loved to work with his hands, especially with woodcarving, and was a gifted
craftsman. He had a passion for the outdoors and Stephen King novels and
spent much of his free time reading, hunting, biking and fishing. He will
be remembered for his great sense of humor and ability to make others laugh.
He is survived by his children, Alan (Alissa) Buzzard of St. Paul,
Minnesota, Ashley (Peder) Theiste of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Andrew
Buzzard of Owatonna, Minnesota; grandchildren, Reagan Buzzard, William
Theiste, and expected baby boy; mother, Phyllis Buzzard of Austin; siblings,
Tammy Lohrmann of Austin, Phillip (Tina) Buzzard of Waseca, Minnesota,
Natalie (Larry) Plumley of Owatonna, and Arlene (Allen) Engel of Columbia
Heights, Minnesota; friend, Karen of Mankato, Minnesota; and many aunts,
uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Buzzard.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24,
at Emmanuel Lutheran Church (750 Jeffrey Street, Owatonna, MN) with Pastor
Smith officiating. Memorial donations are preferred.

Collette Teresa (Coffman) Collins 1934-2018
Collette Teresa Collins, 83, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018,
surrounded by her family.
Born on March 5, 1934, Collette grew up in Austin, Minnesota. She was
the first in her family to go to college and attended Mankato State College,
where she got her bachelor’s in science and her teaching credential. Collette
had an adventurous spirit and moved several places to teach, including Elko,
Nevada, and Fairbanks, Alaska, where she met her husband, David. After she
was married, she taught in Trenton, New Jersey.
After living in England while Dave was in graduate school, they returned
to the United States and had their first daughter, Nicole, in 1965.
Eventually they moved to California, where they had three more daughters,
Michele, Laurie and Suzanne.
Collette was a loyal and loving mother, grandmother and a dedicated
teacher. She wanted nothing more than for her children to go to college,
enjoy their professions and to travel and see the world as she had done.
She never ceased to be a teacher, whether it was working as a classroom
aide in the local middle school or reading stories with her grandchildren.
She had a natural ability to see her children’s’ and grandchildren’s unique
talents and curiosities and nurture them.
She was an avid reader and most enjoyed being with family and
friends, spending time at the beach, and sharing a good meal with
others. She had an infectious smile, a generous heart, caring spirit,
and a stubborn streak with sheer determination that never slowed her
down. She was quick to make a joke in moments of worry and would easily
laugh or cry with others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her four daughters, Nicole, Michele, Laurie and Suzanne;
and her five grandchildren, Angelina, Julia, Joshua, Iris, and Julian.
She was preceded by her parents, Elizabeth and Henry Coffman; her husband,
David; and six siblings, Gene, Paul, Camila, Larry, Dwight, and Billy.
Visitation begins at 4 p.m. followed by a vigil at 5 p.m. on Thursday,
Jan. 25, 2018, at Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home, 977 S. El
Camino Real, San Mateo, CA. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m .on
Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 300 Alameda de
las Pulgas, San Mateo, CA. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan.
29, 2018, at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Rd., Dixon, CA.

Raymond Joseph Kolb, 63, of Austin, Minnesota, died January 19, 2018, at
home with his mother by his side.
Ray was born May 14, 1954 in Austin to Duane and Donna (Schocker) Kolb. He
grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School.
In 1985 he married Judy Brandt and they were blessed with two children.
This union was later dissolved.
He served three and half years in the Austin National Guard. Ray worked
at Land O’Lakes for 30 years, he traveled with Dale Merriam Midway for many
years, and delivered Winnebago RVs around the United States. Ray also worked
for Quality Pork in Austin and Armour in Wells.
He loved to call into “Time to Trade” where he was known as “Gas Can
Man,”go fishing, camping, helping others and spending time with family.
He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
He is survived by his children, Christina Kolb, Medford, MN, Chasity
(Brian) Martin, Grand Forks, ND, and Chad Kolb, Minot, ND; three
grandchildren, Zachary, Alexis and Matthew; his mother, Donna Kolb,
Austin, MN; sisters, Rose (Gerald) Grunig, Peoria, AZ, and Renee (Randy)
Escherich, Kiester, MN; brothers, Rodney (Pat) Kolb, Wabasha, MN, and
Ralland Kolb, Austin, MN; uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends,
and his best friend Jerry Lee.
He was preceded in by his father, Duane; his brother, Russell; and
grandparents.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Wednesday, January 24, 2018
at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There
will be a 5 pm wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends

Obituary
Virginia E. Beck, age 84 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System - Austin, surrounded by her family.
Virginia Ellen was born April 17, 1933, in Tenstrike, Minnesota, to
Richard L. and Mayme M. (Konklin) Hovey. Virginia was a graduate of Bemidji
High School.
In 1951 she was united in marriage to Leo Tamke in Bemidji, and added to
this union are her loving sons, Dennis, Gary, and Mark. Virginia and Leo
later divorced. In 1963 she married Rodney Smith in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
and to this union were added her loving sons Keith, Dwight, Duane, and
Scott.
In 1966 the family moved to Lyle, Minnesota, before eventually settling
in Austin.
Over the years she was employed at Warehouse Market in Austin, and later
the Mower County Jail. Virginia started out as a cook at the jail, and
worked her way up to become the first female civilian jailor in Mower
County before retiring in 1999. Virginia enjoyed playing bingo, cooking
and baking, eating out with friends, and attending a good chicken fry at
the various service clubs in the Austin area. She was a member of the
Lansing United Methodist Church, and at the center of her life was the
love she had for her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons Dennis (Rose) Tamke of Austin, Gary (Tracy)
Tamke of Bloomington, Mark (Joy) Tamke of Austin, Keith (Kimberly) Smith
of Prior Lake, Dwight (Mickey) Smith of Austin, Duane (Tammy) Smith of
Austin, and Scott Smith of Austin; 20 grandchildren and
15 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Ruby, Marie, and
Edna; and by her brother Richard.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018
at First United Methodist Church in Austin with Reverend Sheri Mason
officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday
morning, prior to the service at First United Methodist Church. Interment
will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa. Worlein Funeral
Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.

Wlliam Donald Pyburn 1932-2018
Obituary
William “Bill” Donald Pyburn, age 85, of Austin, Minnesota, passed
away Monday, January 22, 2018 at The Cedars of Austin.
Bill was born December 5, 1932, in Austin, the son of James and Goldie
(Miller) Pyburn. Bill grew up in Austin, and attended Austin High School.
Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 until
his honorable discharge in 1955. He worked as a welder for the Oliver
Corporation and then for Milwaukee Railroad as a brakeman.
Bill wintered in California for many years. He was a past member of the
American Legion and V.F.W., and liked to read current events. Bill will be
missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his brother John “Tim” (Gretchen) Pyburn of Arizona;
sister-in-law Barbara Pyburn, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other
relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Roger
(Kathleen), Robert (Gladys), and Kenneth “George".
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27,
2018, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Elizabeth Endicott
officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on
Saturday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Services

Carl J. Decker 1936-2018
Carl Decker, 81, of Elma, Iowa, died Friday, January 12, 2018, at
Accura Care Center in Cresco, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17,
2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista, Iowa. Burial will be in First
Lutheran Cemetery Ossian, Iowa. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January
16 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco, IA,
and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Carl J. Decker was born on October 5, 1936 to Louie and Rose (Koester)
Decker in Howard County, Iowa. Carl grew up in the Lime Springs area and
quit school after 8th grade to farm with his dad. On October 26, 1958,
Carl married Marie Oakland in Austin, Minnesota. He continued to farm
throughout his life in areas of Tripoli, Alta Vista, Cresco, and Jerico.
After retiring from farming, he worked for Dale Reicks at Reicks View Farms.
He also helped Roger Reicks who became a close friend that helped Carl though
the loss of his beloved wife, Marie.
He enjoyed playing pool, attending tractor pulls, polka music, gardening,
and eating homemade ice cream. He had a large collection of Allis Chalmers
toy tractors. One of Carl’s greatest joys in life was dancing. Carl would
always say, “I’d rather dance than eat!” He liked traveling with his friend,
Roger Reicks. Carl loved spending time with his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Carl is survived by his daughters, Lorraine (Larry) Mullen of Charles
City, and their children Adam Howland of Mason City, IA, Jessica (Nikki)
Hanke of Ladora, IA, and Jenifer (Chad) Olsen of Austin, MN, Lynn (Joe)
Rose of Cresco, IA and their children Brandon (Michelle) Sickles of Altona,
Manitoba, Canada, Bryan Sickles of Cresco, IA, and Kennedy Rose of Cresco,
IA, his great-granddaughter, Ava Howland, sisters Betty Roesler of Lime
Springs, IA, Luella (Curt) Postel of Florida, Arlene (Jerry) Sjullie of
Cedar Rapids, IA, and brothers Donald Decker of Texas, and Louie (special
friend Irma) Decker Jr. of Cedar Rapids, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marie on January 11,
2013, a son, Randy, and a brother-in-law, Bernard Roesler.

LaVonne M. (Benson) Cochran 1937-2018
LaVonne M. Cochran, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, January 22,
2018, at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.
LaVonne was born on December 5, 1937, in Austin, Minnesota, to Ole and
Cora (Lostegaard) Benson and graduated from Blooming Prairie High School.
She married Myron Cochran on September 9, 1956, at Red Oak Grove
Lutheran Church. They later divorced. LaVonne worked at Younkers and
later was the dietitian at the Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea,
Minnesota. She was a lifelong member of Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Cora; and sister,
Shirley.
LaVonne is survived by her son, Mark Cochran, Hayfield, Minnesota;
daughter, Jody (Dean) Schrom, Owatonna, Minnesota; grandchildren,
Christy (Scott) Rogne, Austin, Stephanie (Tyrel) Kennedy, Byron,
Minnesota, Ryan (Brianna) Schrom, Claremont, Minnesota, Katie (Chris)
Emerson, Maple Grove, Minnesota, Jeffrey (Rachel) Cochran, Twig, Minnesota,
and Kelsey Jensen, Owatonna; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marlys (Bob)
Gable, Placentia, California, and Carol (Marlin) Liljerdahl, Northwood,
Iowa; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, at
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Lindsay Stolen officiating. Interment
will be at Red Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7
p.m. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and on Friday for one hour before the service.

Robert “Bob” Luverne Lee 1936-2018
Robert “Bob” Luverne Lee, 81, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday,
January 23, 2018, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Society in Austin.
Bob was born November 21, 1936, in Austin, the son of Russell Luverne
Theodore and Agnes Marie (Twedell) Lee.
Following his graduation from Austin High School in 1956, he entered
service in the United States Army, serving in Korea. Following his honorable
discharge from the Army, Bob returned to Austin and started working for the
city of Austin in the street department, retiring in the late 1990s. He was
a member of the Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. Bob would love
to drive around town to check things out. He will be dearly missed by all
who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his brother, Gene Lee of Austin; sisters, Gloria
Langan of Austin and Elaine (Gary) Sipple of Albert Lea, Minnesota;
and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents;
his brother, David Lee; and brother-in-law, Thomas Langan.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
Jan. 27, 2018, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with Father
Dale Tupper officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to
the service at the church on Saturday. Military honors will be by American
Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in
Austin. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with

Douglas Lee Scholten 1941-2018
Douglas Lee Scholten, 76, of Ottumwa, Iowa, died Jan. 22, 2018, at home.
He was born May 4, 1941, in Corsica, South Dakota, to Ben and Jeanette
Scholten. He married Nancy Meyer on Aug. 26, 1960, and she preceded him in
death on Feb. 9, 1982.
A graduate of Armour High School in Armour, South Dakota, Douglas
earned a bachelor of science degree from South Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell,
South Dakota. He taught at Austin High School in Austin, Minnesota, worked
at Hormel in Austin and Ottumwa as well as Excel and retired from the Zee
Co. in 2007.
Douglas played AAA baseball and managed the Austin Blues. He enjoyed
harness racing and owned and operated Doug’s Horse and Carriage Service.
Surviving are his daughters, Tamara J. Scholten (John Montgomery) of
Branson, Missouri, Jill E. (Alvin) Baker of Hedrick, Iowa, Wendlyn L.
(Todd) Durflinger of Gladstone, Illinois, Tracey K. (James) Hamilton of
Dallas, Texas, and Janel M. Scholten of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; a special companion of 20 years, Betty Eklofe; a
sister, Bonnie (Matt) McKeon of Sedona, Arizona; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Don and Brad
Scholten.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at Reece
Funeral Home in Ottumwa with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating. Graveside
service and burial will be 1 p.m. on Saturday in Holman Cemetery in Sibley,
Iowa, with Pastor Luke Schouten officiating. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. on
Thursday with the family present from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be made to the Iowa Cerebral Palsy Association, P.O. Box 4090, Waterloo,
IA 50704.

23, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospitals - St. Marys Campus in Rochester,

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 31st
at Cornerstone Church, 1403 1st Avenue SW, with the Reverend David
Simerson and the Reverend Dr. Terry Tuinder officiating. Interment

Erma Kathleen “Kate” Trembley
Erma Kathleen “Kate” Trembley, 94, went to be with her beloved Savior
on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys
Campus-Rochester.
Kate was born on February 2, 1923, in Orange Township, Guthrie County,
Iowa, to John Guy and Edna Rose Minnich. Kate was the seventh child among
13 siblings. She attended school until the eighth grade in Iowa and did
odd jobs until she married Casper Deters in 1944. They made their home
in Brownsdale, Minnesota, where Cap worked for Hormel and Kate was a
homemaker. Cap and Kate had five sons, Ronald, Brad, Max, Randy, and
Doug. Cap passed away in 1953.
Kate married Paul Trembley in 1955. They made their home in Austin,
Minnesota, where Paul worked for Austin Utilities until he retired and
Kate continued as a homemaker. Paul and Kate had two children, Suzette
and Paul “Ken.”
Kate was the most loving, kind, patient, supportive, accepting and
forgiving person. She loved to do crafts, quilting and collecting.
Collecting porcelain dolls was especially fun for her and at one time
she had over 300. She had a great sense of humor and always had words
of wisdom and a listening ear. Her greatest loves were Jesus her Savior,
her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
Kate is survived by her children, Brad (Terri) Deters, Austin, Max Deters, Mount Auburn, Illinois, Randy (Penny) Deters, Brownsdale, Doug (Pat) Deters, Austin, Suzette (Terry) Tuinder, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Ken (Carol) Trembley, Cottage Grove, Minnesota; 34 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Jolle Davis, Homer, Alaska; brothers, LeRoy (Marie) Minnich, Carson City, Nevada, Max (Marlys) Minnich, Austin, Doug Minnich, Grand Meadow, Minnesota, and Harley (Helen), San Benito, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Edna Minnich; husbands, Casper Deters and Paul Trembley; her son, Ronald; her grandson, Zachariah; brothers, Everett, John and Tommy; and sisters, Gertrude, Inez, Ila, and Ruth.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, at

Husband of Judith Fay Hagan
October 28, 1942 -- April 16, 2017 (age 74)
Gary died peacefully surrounded by loving family Sunday, April 16, 2017,
at Mayo Clinic Health Systems – Albert Lea.
Gary Lee Hagan was born October 28, 1942 in Missouri, the son of Raymond
and Martha (Warner) Hagan. He grew up in Missouri and attended school in
Cainsville, MO and Waseca, MN. Gary served for 2 years in the U.S. Airforce.
On July 21, 1962, Gary was united in marriage to Judith Fay Hamilton in
Eagleville, Missouri. Gary spent many years as an over the road trucker. He
was a member of AARP and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.
Gary enjoyed fishing, watching westerns – John Wayne was his favorite –
Vikings Football, camping, and boating. He loved being around and picking
on his family and friends.
Gary is survived by his wife, Judith; children, Vicky (Tom) Hamersma,
Janell (Mike) Arnt, and Ruth Ann Hunecke (fiancé W. E. Chambers “Wink”);
siblings: Paul (Rosalie) Hagan, Karen (Walt) Zimara, Kenny (Wendy) Hagan,
Susan Hagan, Diane (Doug) Eisenmann; 7 unofficial adopted daughters who
called him Dad, Deann, Jodi, Rose, Colleen, Sherry, Jill, Becky; 13
grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, g
randnieces, grandnephews, and an abundance of friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his son Gary L. Hagan, Jr., his parents,
older brother in infancy, younger brother Charles Thomas Hagan, and
brother-in-law Donald Barrows.

Marquette D. Turner 1965-2018
Marquette D. Turner, 53 of Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully on Friday
morning, January 26, 2018, at his home.
Marquette was born January 23, 1965, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Lance and
Cheryl (Baldwin) Turner. He grew up in Iowa City, Iowa and graduated from
Iowa City West High School. Marquette also earned his Associates Degree
from Riverland College in Austin.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Marquette was
employed by the Austin Country Club, Gerard of Minnesota and currently
with the United States Postal Service in Albert Lea. His hobbies included
hunting, fishing, listening to KFAN and blogging on Facebook. Marquette
loved his Iowa Hawkeyes and was a proud member of the NRA. He enjoyed
spending time with his family and his dog, Cash. His friends and family
will miss him dearly.
Survivors include his significant other, Christine Klein of Austin, his
nephews; Matthew Klein of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Mitchell Klein of Iowa
City; his step-father, Al Pecinozsky of Decorah, Iowa and his step brothers;
Butch Pecinozsky of Decorah, Iowa and Tom Pecinozsky of Cresco, Iowa, and
many other close family members and a host of special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Timothy.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018,
at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Visitation will be held
one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials to donor’s
choice. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 91.

Marilyn J. (Rabine) Smith 1943-2018
Like one of her favorite songs, Marilyn could only imagine walking by
Jesus’ side and being surrounded by His glory. Now she is standing in His
presence.
Marilyn J. (Rabine) Smith, 74, died on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at her
home in Rochester, Minnesota, surrounded by her family and a dear friend.
She was born on April 24, 1943. She grew up in Dexter, Minnesota. She
graduated from Elkton High School and went on for a nursing diploma at
St. Barnabas Nursing School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received a
bachelor of science in nursing from St. Theresa’s in Winona, Minnesota,
and a master in science in counselor education from Winona State University.
Marilyn started her career as a nurse at Spring Valley Hospital in Spring
Valley, Minnesota. She later decided to open a ceramic shop with her sister
in Stewartville, Minnesota. Marilyn then began a 25-year career with Mayo
Clinic as an educator in the Department of Patient Education. She then
became a learning and development consultant in the Office of Leadership
and Organizational Development at Mayo Clinic. Marilyn may be best known
for creating and facilitating Mayo Clinic’s new employee orientation for
which she became published.
Marilyn also spent many hours volunteering with several organizations.
It was important to her to serve others and give back to her community.
Some of her volunteer work included being an EMT with the Grand Meadow
ambulance crew, a facilitator with the Critical Incidents Stress Management
Team of Southeast Minnesota, a mentor for Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPs)
and a volunteer for Gift of Life Transplant House and the Lymphoma Research
Foundation.
Marilyn loved spending time with her four grandchildren and was excited
about her new great-grandson. She also loved scrapbooking and reading. She
and her husband, Gary, liked to travel, being fortunate to have taken many
overseas trips including Germany, Austria, and China. They enjoyed taking
day trips stopping at flea markets and antique stores along the way. Marilyn
also loved her trips up north to Half Moon Trail with family and to Lutsen
with the yayas.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Gary; her two children, Mike (Jill)
Smith of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, and Heidi (Michael) Dieter of Rochester;
grandsons, Stefan (Kate) Smith of Edina and Killian Smith of Phoenix;
great-grandson. Everett Smith; granddaughters, Mikaela and Emily Dieter;
and her sister, Lynette (Curt) Utpadel of Sun City West.
Marilyn wanted to thank everyone for their love, encouragement and care.
She always felt surrounded and cared for by family, friends, co-workers and
neighbors. She wanted to be certain that her friends and family knew how
much she loved them and how much they meant in her life. “I always wanted
to make sure my family and friends knew how important they were to me.
Thank you for loving me and caring about me. I was truly blessed.” She
also wanted to thank Dr. Habermann for helping to give her way more time
than she thought possible.
A visitation will be held at Christ Community Church from between 4-6
p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Christ Community Church on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, followed by a luncheon
at 11:30 a.m.
Memorials may be sent to Mayo Clinic Hospice, Lymphoma Research
Foundation, Christ Community Church (please state in memo line “Raising
Moms memorial gift”), or a charity of your choice.

Howard John Strey Sr. 1930-2018
Howard John Strey Sr., 87, long-time Austin, Minnesota, resident and
Austin High School coach and teacher, passed away peacefully on Saturday,
Jan. 27, 2018, in Apple Valley Minnesota, surrounded by his family.
He was born on the family farm in Wright County near Delano, Minnesota,
on Oct. 19, 1930, the son of John and Hattie (Wandersee) Strey. He graduated
from Delano High School in 1948 and from Hamline University in 1952. He
married Jo Ann Haddorff on Dec. 22, 1952, at the United Methodist Church
in Mound, Minnesota.
A Korean War veteran, he served in Okinawa as a communications and
recreation specialist. Following military deployment, he began his
teaching career in Mapleton, Minnesota, before moving to Austin where
he taught at Austin High School from 1957 to 1993. As AHS head and
assistant basketball coach, he participated in three state tournaments,
finishing runner-up in 1972 (assistant) and 1981 (head). As the assistant
baseball coach, he participated in four state tournaments. He was
Minnesota’s Assistant Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Riverland
Community College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an active member of Austin’s
Westminster Presbyterian Church, Izaak Walton League, and the American
Legion.
His passions included fishing and hunting with family and friends as
well as traveling with Jo Ann.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law,
Clarence and Deloris Strey; and brother-in-law, Oscar Haddorff.
Howard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jo Ann of Apple Valley; his
children, Howie Jr (Janet) of Duluth, Minnesota, Charlie (Mary) of Pella,
Iowa, Tom (Ann) of Apple Valley, and Jamie (Kelly) of Burnsville, Minnesota;
his grandchildren, Betsy (Dan), Jessi (Dan), Lora, Christina (Morgan),
Jackie (Darren), Erin, Allison, Matt, Patrick, Paul, Colin, Duncan,
Maddie, and Aiden; his great-grandchildren, Clara, Kalaya, Alice,
Oliver, Hannah, Amelia, Miles, and Imogen; sister, Helen (Jack) Gardner;
sister-in-law, Marion Haddorff; brothers-in-law, Jack (Janine) Haddorff
and Bob (Ginger) Haddorff; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018,
at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin with the Rev. Michael Olmsted
officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour before the service.
Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to Westminster
Presbyterian Church or the donor’s choice. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in

Ross M. Rockwell 1927-2018
Ross M. Rockwell, 91, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, following
complications from a heart attack. He died at home surrounded by his
loving family.
Ross was born in Red Rock township, Minnesota, to Paul and Gertrude
M. (Dibble) Rockwell on Jan. 13, 1927.
Ross grew up on his parents’ farm southeast of Brownsdale, Minnesota.
He graduated from Austin High School and joined the U.S. Army. He was
stationed in Hawaii and Guam.
Following discharge from the service, he married Lois Jarvis in Austin,
Minnesota. Ross worked at Hormel Foods for 37 years and upon retirement
worked for Joe Fuhrman for 10 years. Ross and Lois have seven children,
16 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Ross is survived by his wife, Lois; daughters, Linda (Ed) Eppler, Paula
(Philip) Palacios, and Robin (Tom) Pasztor; sons, Scott Rockwell, Garet
(Kelly) Rockwell, and Corey (Michelle) Rockwell; brother, Guy (Marcella)
Rockwell; and sister-in-law, Della Rockwell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Rockwell; brothers,
Fay, Paul and Harry Rockwell; and sister, Norrine Monson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018,
at Cornerstone Church with Pastor David Simerson officiating. Visitation
will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at Cornerstone Church.

Betty Jane (Wilkins) Christianson 1944-2018
Betty Jane Christianson, 73, of rural Austin, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018,
at her home.

2018, at Bethlehem Free Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Steele officiating.

Betty Jane Christianson, 73, died peacefully in her sleep on January
28, 2018, at her home of over 50 years in rural Austin, Minnesota.
Betty was born on November 25, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Mary Helen
(Wittenmyer) and Elmer Wilkins.
She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. While she was
attending, a mutual friend introduced her to her true love, Jerome
Christianson, who lovingly nicknamed her “Beege” because she liked
the Bee Gees. Betty and Jerry were married Feb. 12, 1966. She wanted
to be an airline stewardess, but had her dreams cut short by not meeting
the height requirements. She moved to Minnesota and worked at Albert Lea
Schools and Weyerhaeuser before she had her children and managed their
farm business.
Betty will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, generosity, kindness
and devotion to Christ. She loved boating and being on the lake, puzzles
and animals.
Betty had an incredibly strong faith and relationship with Jesus. She
poured her heart into praying and lifting up her friends and family in
His name.
Betty is survived by her beloved husband, Jerry; her wonderful sons,
Dale and John (Lilly); and her favorite grandson, Bernie. She is also
survived by many friends and relatives who will miss her as she goes on
her final journey to Heaven.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Helen and Elmer;
daughter, Wendy; and son, Dean.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, at
Bethlehem Free Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Steele officiating.
Interment will be at Red Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from

Allen Dennis Johnson 1925-2018
Allen Dennis Johnson, age 93, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, passed
away Monday, January 29, 2018 at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming
Prairie.
Allen Dennis Johnson was born on January 2, 1925 in rural
Blooming Prairie on the family Century Farm to Elmer and Edna (Dennis)
Johnson. He attended District 47 country school and Blooming Prairie
High School. At a young age Allen’s father died and he began working
on the farm.
On June 1, 1947, he married Dorothy Davis at Red Oak Grove Lutheran
Church. Their marriage was blessed with 3 sons. He was named the Steele
County Outstanding Farmer and placed 3rd in the state competition. In 1960
he purchased the Bixby Feed Mill that he operated until retiring in 1988.
He was an entrepreneur starting many local businesses including; Tri-Ford,
Prairie Farm Service, Prairie Pullet, Green Valley Egg, and others. In 1990
the couple began wintering in Arizona until 2011. He served on the Steele
County Fair Board for 37 years. He was a member of The Owatonna Elks, Osman
Shrine, and Prairie Lodge. Allen enjoyed traveling, square dancing, and
yardwork. He filled his free time fishing, playing cards, lawn mowing,
and golfing.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Johnson of Blooming
Prairie, three sons, David (Jan) Johnson of Houston, Texas, Greg (Betti)
Johnson of Blooming Prairie, and Doug (Tamzen) Johnson of Blooming Prairie;
seven grandchildren, Heather, Geoffrey (Emily), Jason (Jenny Wondra), Lori
(Nate) Arndt, Grant, Alex, and Erin (Matthew) Larsgaard; three
great-grandchildren, Talon, Ethan, Sophia, and one due in the spring
of 2018; sister, Geraldine Oswald of Blooming Prairie; sister-in-law,
Virginia Davis of Clarks Grove; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Edna Johnson; siblings,
Georgiann Toquam, Elmer “Don” Johnson, and Mary Alice Golden; six
brother-in-laws, and three sister-in-laws.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 1,
2018. At the First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie with Pastor Heidi
Heimgartner officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the
service on Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Union Cemetery,
Bixby. Memorials can be directed to Shriners Hospital, First Lutheran

Patricia Kay Andrews 1940-2018
Patricia Kay Andrews, 77, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully
on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at Sacred Heart Care Center, surrounded by her
loving family.
Patricia was born on June 8, 1940, to Bruce and Evelyn (Severtson)
Andrews in Blue Earth, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at
St. Olaf Lutheran Church and attended Austin High School. Pat’s passion
was her family. She enjoyed embroidery, making many beautiful stitched
tablecloths and wedding pillowcases as gifts. Her love of cooking and
baking kept her life busy. Every year for 60 years she entered her
beautiful embroidery items and her baked goods at the Mower County
Fair. She received many ribbons, including Grand Champion. Pat was
a member of the Mower County Senior Citizens Center where she enjoyed
playing cards. Her friends and family will miss her dearly.
Patricia is survived by four sisters, Sandra Carroll, Bonnie Britt,
Cheryl (Jim) Epley, and Sheila (Bob) Helmers, all of Austin; nieces and
nephews, Terri (Brian) Cambern, Julie (Mike) Diaz, Steve (Renae) Carroll,
John Karnes Jr., Sheri (Juan) Escondon, Shelly (Jason) Buresh, Angela Ferch,
and Valerie (Kenny) Yeakel; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bruce and Evelyn Andrews; two
infant brothers; and triplet sisters in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at
St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Susan Li officiating. There will be
a visitation held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment
will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting

Carol Ann (Lechnir) King 1933-2018
Carol Ann King, age 84, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday January
17, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System Austin.
Carol Ann Lechnir was born December 24, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota,
to Ernest F. and Mae A. (Pooler) Lechnir. Carol attended Austin Public
Schools, graduating from Austin High School in 1951.
On February 20, 1955, she was united in marriage to David N. King.
The couple were blessed with one son and two daughters, and made their
home in Austin. Carol enjoyed her role as wife, mother, and homemaker.
She belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church and was active in the LWML,
the United Support Group, and the Fairview Cemetery Auxiliary. David
passed away on March 11, 2017. In her spare time, Carol loved to read,
knit, and solve crossword puzzles. She considered her family, friends,
and her life all precious gifts from God. Carol will be dearly missed by
all whose lives she touched.
Survivors include her son Brian of Austin, son-in-law James Berg of
Eden Prairie, sisters-in-law Mildred King, Darlene Erickson, Beverly
and Lucille Lechnir, and many beloved nieces and nephews, other relatives
and friends. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, and daughters
Lisa King and Barbara Berg, three brothers, Ernest F. Lechnir Jr., Jerry
Lechnir, and Robert Lechnir.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2018
at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor James Groleau officiating.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Oakland, Minnesota. The
visitation will take place from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 22 at
Worlein Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on
Tuesday.
Memorials can be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church or recipient
of donor’s choice. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral
Home of Austin.

Barbara J. (Yocom) Olson 1940-2018
Barbara J. Olson, 78, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018,
at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus-Rochester.
Barbara Jean Olson was born Jan. 18, 1940, in Austin, Minnesota, the
daughter of Glenn Sr. and Bernice (Downs) Yocom. She graduated from Austin
High School in 1958. Barbara was married to Robert Eugene Olson on Nov. 2,
1962, in Austin. Barbara enjoyed bingo, playing cards, monopoly and was an
avid sports fan. For the past few months, she resided at Grand Meadow
Healthcare Center in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Connie Johnson;
parents; and brothers, Charles and Robert Yocom.
She is survived her daughters, Valerie (Olson) and Wade Schewe of
Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, and Carol (Olson) Gusa, Commerce City,
Colorado; son, Curtis Olson, Austin; seven grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie (Yocom) Geffert, St. Ansgar,
Iowa; brothers, Glenn Yocum Jr. , Austin, and Ronald (Carolyn) Yocom,
Austin; nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is in charge of arrangements.

Duane Gerald "Red" Lindgren 1924-2018
Duane Gerald "Red" Lindgren, age 93 of Austin, Minnesota, passed
away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at The Cedars of Austin.
Red was born March 17, 1924 in Braham, Minnesota to Nels and Olga
(Carlson) Lindgren. He attended school in Princeton and Monticello and
graduated from South St. Paul High School. Red enrolled at Augsburg
College, but his college education was put on hold as he enlisted in
the Naval Air Corp on December 7, 1942. There he served as a naval
aviator until an honorable discharge in March of 1945.
Following his military service, he returned to Augsburg College where
he completed his education with a major in history. He had numerous
outstanding achievements in baseball, football and basketball. Red is
the only person to have been captain of all three sports his senior year
and he was the first 12 letter winner. He was inducted into the Augsburg
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. Red’s baseball career started with a semi-pro
team, the Saint Cloud Rox, in the summer of 1946. Red also became a member
of the New York Giants organization.
In 1948 Red was recruited by Emil Scheid to play for the Austin
Packers baseball team and played with them until 1957. He hit the first
homerun at Marcuson Park. In 1950 Red set a southern Minnesota record of
hitting in 32 consecutive games with a .392 batting average while playing
for the Packers. He also began his career at Hormels at this time. Red met
Shirley Nicholsen in 1948 and they were married the following year. They
had three children, Nick, Ann, and Ellen.
He retired in 1984 from Hormel and became a caregiver for his wife
Shirley until her death in 1992. In 1995 Red met Donna Dosland and they
have spent many happy years together. They have enjoyed summers on Bad
Medicine Lake in Ponsford, Minnesota and winters in Gold Canyon, Arizona.
Red was a charter member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, the
Austin Country Club, and the Night Owls. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
golfing, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his son, Nick (Jeannette) Lindgren of Remer, MN;
daughters Ann Lindgren of Austin, MN, Ellen (Mark) Chrz of Oakland, MN;
five grandchildren: Marie (Adam) Helbach, Erin (Danny) Prazak, Andrea
(Matt) Lange, Ryan (Kayla) Chrz, Rachel (Nick) Wehner; nine
great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Enid (Emery) Thompson of Austin, MN;
nieces and nephews, and longtime special companion Donna Dosland of
Ponsford, MN.
Red was preceded in death by his parents Nels and Olga Lindgren,
his wife Shirley Lindgren, and his sister Joyce Francis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6,
2018, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling
officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday,
February 5, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and for one hour prior
to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Oakwood
Cemetery in Austin. Military honors by American Legion Post 91. Memorials
can be directed to recipient of donor’s choice. Services prearranged and
performed by Worlein Funeral Home in Austin. Condolences may be expressed

Phyllis Jean (Smith, Farnsworth) HANDEGARD 1934-2018
Born: November 12, 1934
Died: January 28, 2018
Phyllis Jean Smith/Farnsworth/Handegard, age 83 of Eagle, Idaho, and
formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully encircled by the strong
women she helped bring into this world and listening to Amazing Grace,
on Sunday, January 28, 2018.
She is survived by her three children, Jeff (JoAnn) Farnsworth, Cathy
(Dave) Larson and Bethany (Tom) Gadzinski; her brother and sister, Randy
(Kim) Smith and Delores Gemmel; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She is now in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her mother and
father and her two sisters and brother.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm,
Friday, February 9, 2018 at Worlein Funeral Home, 1801 4th St. NW, Austin,
MN 55912. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February
10, 2018 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Tim Smith
officiating. Lunch will be provided after the services with a committal
service to follow at the Geneva, Minnesota, cemetery.

Mary "Monica" Johnson, age 104 of Rose Creek
Monica Johnson, age 104, formerly of Rose Creek, Minnesota, died
Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Good Samaritan, Comforcare in Austin,
Minnesota.
Monica was born April 22, 1913, in Austin, Minnesota, Martin and Margaret
(McBride) Reagan. She grew up on a farm in Rose Creek and graduated
from Rose Creek High School, she went on to attend Teachers Normal
School and became a teacher, and taught all grades in country schools
in the area.
On January 8, 1951 Monica was united in marriage to Olaf Johnson at
St. Peters Catholic Church in Rose Creek. Monica was a devoted housewife
and a wonderful cook. She was a caregiver to her mother Margaret, who
lived with Olaf and Monica. She was very close to her sister Muriel,
they were always together.
Monica was involved with all her nieces and nephews, like a second
mother, she was also the sweet next door neighbor everyone loved to visit.
Monica loved to knit, cross stitch, and had a beautiful rose garden.
Survivors include sister-in-law Genevieve Reagan, Austin, MN; nieces, Mary
Nelson, Stockton, CA, Patricia (Ron) Dillavou, Rose Creek, MN, Bernadine

on Tuesday. Interment will be in St. Peters Cemetery.

David John Hall 1951-2018
Obituary for David John Hall
September 18, 1951 - January 30, 2018
David J. Hall, age 66, of Austin, died Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at
his home.
David was born September 18, 1951 in Austin, Minnesota to Howard and
Viola Hall. He was a graduate of Austin High School, attended Austin
Community College and Minnesota Bible College. David worked at Hormel
and also the Census Bureau and election polls.
David was a sports fan and throughout his life attended Austin High
School sporting events. For years he helped coach his church softball
team. David was an avid reader, especially on the subject of American
History. He enjoyed geneology research and collected music albums.
Survivors include his brother, Richard (Helen) Hall; sisters, Carol Hall,
Mary (Donald Green) Owen; nieces, Stacey Sorenson, Lindsay Hall; great
nephew, Hunter Sorenson.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held 1 pm on Friday, February 16, 2018, at
Mayer Funeral Home. The family will greet friends at a reception following
the service at Mayer Funeral Home.

Nathan Hovland c1934-2018
Nathan "Nate" Hovland, 83, of Laguna Woods, California, passed away on
Sunday, Jan. 28, at his home.
Nate was born and raised in Austin, Minnesota. He attended Austin High
School, where he met his wife, Virginia Shutt. He went on to Mankato State
for college. Nate enjoyed his career as a teacher and counselor for the
Tustin Unified School District for over 35 years. When he retired, he was
so lucky to be able to play his favorite sports, tennis and golf.
Nate is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia; his daughter,
Anne Huber and her husband, Terry; his son, David Hovland; and his two
grandsons, Sam and James, who were one of the greatest joys in his life.
A celebration of life will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb.
17, at Clubhouse Two, 24112 Moulton Parkway, Laguna Woods, CA 92637.

Roy Charles Weber 1949-2018
Roy Charles Weber, 69, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of
Rock Valley, Iowa, died on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at the Dougherty
Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Roy Charles Weber was born Feb. 6, 1949, in Austin, Minnesota, the son
of Thomas and Hazel (Warrens) Weber. Roy married Anne Wagner on Feb. 6,
1971. Roy attended college at Mankato State University and received his
master of education from the University of South Dakota. Roy was an
elementary teacher, a high school wrestling and baseball coach and
junior high school football coach. Roy taught at Luverne, Minnesota,
from 1980 to 1982 and in Rock Valley from 1982 to 2010.
He enjoyed teaching and coaching children about his favorite topics,
history and literature, and his favorite sports, wrestling, baseball and
football. After his retirement from teaching and coaching, he worked part
time for St. Mary’s Catholic Church, mowing the church and cemetery lawns
and doing church maintenance.
Roy is survived by his wife of 47 years, Anne; his children, Roy "R.C.’"
(Rhiannon) Weber of Sioux Falls and Elizabeth (Trevor) Rolfes of Eagan,
Minnesota; grandchildren, Payton, Cael, Sawyer and Kyra; sister, Linda
(David) Christiansen of St. Cloud, Minnesota; brother, Scott (Kari) Weber
of Austin; mother-in-law, Sharon Wagner of Austin; sister-in-law, Deborah
Burroughs of Milaca, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Hazel; and brothers,
Andrew Lamb and George Lamb.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Rock Valley with Father Douglas Klein officiating.
Visitation, with the family present, will be held prior to the service
from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial of cremated remains will be
held on a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Austin. Condolences may be

Keith J. Farrell 1946-2018
Keith J. Farrell, 72, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, died Tuesday, February
6, 2018, at Comforcare Good Samaritan Society in Austin, Minnesota.
Keith was born on January 31, 1946, in Austin, the son of Robert and
Gladys (Cerny) Farrell. He attended school at Brownsdale and became a
mechanic. He was the owner of Keith’s Repair in Mapleview, Minnesota. Keith
married Kathleen K. Skjeveland and they had two children, Chris and Rebecca.
They later divorced. He was married to Janet Hansen.
Keith enjoyed the Monday card games with his sisters, his football bets
with George and watching WWE Wrestling with his nephew, Richard. He also
liked to watch a variety of game shows on television.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and William;
a granddaughter, Maddison Farrell; brothers-in-law, Norman Anderson, Lowell
Pike, Darrell Maas and Giles Motzko.
Keith is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Debbie Farrell,
Austin; daughter, Rebecca Schilling, Charles City, Iowa; five grandchildren;
12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Judy Pike, Brownsdale, Gloria Anderson,
Brownsdale, and Joyce Motzko, Brownsdale; sisters-in-law, Retha Farrell,
Brownsdale, and Doris Farrell, Lansing, Minnesota; nephews and nieces.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Comforcare Good Samaritan
Society, St. Croix Hospice and the doctors and staff of the Mayo Clinic for
their care and kindness. A very special thank you to Keith’s loving sisters
for all of their care and help.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with Chaplain Theresa Turnbull officiating.
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour
before the service on Saturday at the Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Larry Lee Elit 1937-2018
Larry Lee Elit, 80, of Rushford, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, February 6,
2018, at his home in rural Rushford.
Larry was born to Irene (Seefeldt) and George Elit on April 7, 1937,
in Austin, Minnesota. He lived on the family farm in Elkton, Minnesota.
Larry moved to Dexter, Minnesota, in 1946 with his mother and grandparents.
Larry graduated from Elkton High School in 1955. He then joined the United
States Air Force and was on active duty for four years.
In 1959, Larry was hired at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota, where he
worked for 35 years. In 1966 he re-enlisted and served with the 96th
Tactical Airlift Squadron, “Flying Vikings,” Air Force Reserve. Later,
two of his sons would also serve with him in the 96th in the late 1980s.
He served 30 years with the Reserves until his retirement in 1990.
He was an avid sportsman along with gardening, research, literature,
woodworking and geology.
Larry married Elaine (Drugg) Elit in 1961. From this 27-year marriage
came four children, Brian Elit of Peyton, Colorado, Wayne Elit of Hanover,
Minnesota, Erich (Mendie) Elit of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Dawn
Elit-Arnett (Darrell Calhoun) of Cedaredge, Colorado. He has four
granddaughters and one grandson.
In 1989, he married Priscilla (Adams) Elit. They were later divorced.
From this marriage Larry had one child, Laura Elit of San Antonio, Texas,
and another granddaughter.
His companion, Penny Hatlan, has resided with him and cared for him
throughout his illness.
Preceding him in death are his parents, George in 1969 and Irene in
1997; as well as a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law.
There will be a funeral service for Larry at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10,
2018, at Hoff Funeral Home in Rushford with the Rev. Allen Hanson officiating.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at the Minnesota State
Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior
to the service at the funeral home.

Phillip Miller 1935-2018
Phillip Miller, 83, of Park Rapids, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin,
Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018.
Phillip was born on Jan. 29, 1935, in Grand Marais, Minnesota, to Truman
and Ida (Butterfield) Miller. He began his schooling at the Maple Hill
public school near Grand Marais. At the age of seven, he moved with his
family to southern Minnesota, where they settled near Winnebago, Minnesota,
and he continued his schooling through the 10th grade. His family again
ventured to northern Minnesota and settled in Aitkin, Minnesota, where
he finished his public schooling, graduating with the AHS class of 1955.
Right after high school, Phil entered the United States Air Force, where
he proudly served his country until receiving his honorable discharge on
Feb. 6, 1959. He later attended the Albert Lea Area Vocational Technical
College where he earned his boiler license. Phil had a long career with
the Malt-O-Meal Company in Northfield, Minnesota. While at Malt-O-Meal,
he entered the Dunwoody Institute to study electronics. He received his
chief boiler’s operators and electronics licenses while working there.
Phil married Janet (Hamberg) Miller on Nov. 7, 1998, in Myrtle, Minnesota.
Phil was a strong man of faith and loved to study and memorize the
Bible. He was a faithful and active member of the First English Lutheran
Church in Dorset, Minnesota, where he served on the Board of Christian
Education. Phil enjoyed airplanes and flying. He loved the solitude and
peace he found while flying over the beauty of God’s handiwork. Phil was
a talented sketcher and especially liked drawing airplanes. He also loved
the beauty of northern Minnesota’s forests and lakes, where he especially
enjoyed fishing.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Janet Miller of Park Rapids; his
children, John (Kathleen) Miller of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Meghan
Miller of Lake Preston, South Dakota, and Janelle Miller of DeSmet, South
Dakota; his two stepsons, Keith (Merideth) Hamberg of Excelsior, Minnesota,
and Kurt (Marcy) Hamberg of Fridley, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Truman and
Ida Miller; and his brother, Burt Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at
First English Lutheran Church in Park Rapids with the Rev. Chris Davis
officiating. Visitation was held on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Jones-Pearson
Funeral Home in Park Rapids. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National
Cemetery with military honors by Star of the North Marine Corps League.
