She taught 34 years with the Department of Defense, retiring to Hayfield, MN in 1991. She enjoyed participating in the annual gathering of “overseas teachers” held each summer somewhere in the US. Even while confined to Field Crest Care Center, she continued to correspond with friends all over the world.

Following her retirement, Mary continued to teach through her volunteer work with McCurdy Schools in Espanola, New Mexico and at the Red Bird Mission at Beverly, Kentucky, both mission schools founded by the Methodist Church. Carroll Ray Allgood

1928-2017

Carroll Ray Allgood, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Aug. 28, 2017, in Rice Memorial Hospital, in Willmar, Minnesota.

He was born in Brownwood, Texas, on Oct. 3, 1928, the son of Billie and Thelma Allgood. Due to his family’s rather nomadic lifestyle seeking employment and a better way of life, education and experiences came in many way ays and in various parts of the country. Carroll recounted attending 23 different schools mainly throughout Texas, Illinois, and Indiana before graduating from high school in Poteet, Texas. He went on to college at Southwest Texas State, San Marcos, before enlisting in the U. S. Marine Corps for six years, three of which were spent serving as an embassy guard in Paris, France.

On June 30, 1954, he married Rosemary Paulson in Ellendale, Minnesota, after which they settled in Austin until they retired in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, in 1990. Carroll had many careers, mostly in retail management but really seemed to enjoy his sideline businesses of sign-making and engraving. He also enjoyed volunteering, family trips, and social activities with the Kings’ Folk group of Crystal Evangelical Free Church.

An avid fisherman and accomplished woodworking worker, Carroll was also gifted in language, speaking fluent French, Spanish, and Tex-Mex slang. Having grown up with very little, he was a collector of sports cards, coins, and stamps. Despite his meager beginnings, Carroll was extremely generous, often saying, “It’s yours” as someone admired one of his prized items.

Carroll’s ever-present companions were his sense of humor, fishing rod and tackle, stories of the one he just caught or the one that got away. His greatest gifts were the love and time he gave us all. Carroll’s generous spirit continued until the end of his earthly life when he donated his body for research to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program.

A family memorial service will be held in New London, Minnesota, on Sept. 23.

Leona (Jindra) Langan

c1932-2017

Leona Jindra Langan, 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter, Minnesota.

She was a 1950 graduate of Pacelli High School in Austin, Minnesota.

Leona was blessed with a love of people and culture. She always looked to expand her knowledge and actively pursued ways to do this. At the time of her high school graduation, her parents offered either funding for a college education, or education by exploration. She happily chose the latter and embarked on a trip around the world with a close friend. Her love of travel continued until the end, with many trips all over the world with friends and family.

Leona had a love of style and fashion, and refused to look shabby all the way until her last breath. On her last days, she wore a beautiful purple scarf that was a gift from her niece, as well as lipstick and perfume. She relished beauty in all forms — people, places, art, food, knowledge and, especially, animals. She was fortunate to get to Africa for a safari a few years ago. It was a dream come true to also meet the natives and experience their culture. She loved animals of all kinds and was thrilled to meet the visiting therapy dogs at St. Benedictine.

She was a great chef, relished cooking for her loved ones, as well as eating the food they cooked for her! She had many great meals at her nieces’ and nephews’ homes in California and Edina, and looked forward to getting spoiled at every household.

She cherished every one of her family and friends, and she will be forever missed. She was loved by everyone she ever met.

Leona is survived by her nieces and nephews, Paul Englund (Annette Elizabeth), John (Nancy) Winter, Patti (Tom) Brennan, Nanci (Brian) Gunning and Gary (Karen) Winter; 23 great-nieces, great-nephews, and their spouses; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Gertrude Jindra; her brother, Jim; and her most beloved sister, Mary.

A memorial service was held Sept. 11 at the St. Peter Funeral Home. Those wishing to send a memorial are asked to make a donation to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund
