Daniel Benjamin Kasten

1949-2017

Daniel Benjamin Kasten, 67, of Farmers Branch, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 12 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Born November 27, 1949, in Austin, Minnesota, he grew up on a farm near Rose Creek, Minnesota, with his sister, Lorna, and three brothers, Gary, Keith, and David. His earliest memories were of working the fields, nurturing the animals, and observing the seasons. He left the farm after graduating as the valedictorian of Rose Creek High School in 1967 to attend St. Cloud State University. He is probably the only person to put himself through college because of an orphaned lamb. He bottle-fed the baby, then he sold the lamb to buy two pigs, then he sold a lot of pigs to buy a cow, and he slowly built a herd. He then sold a cow every time tuition came due.

He spent his early years on a farm, but always dreamed of seeing the world. After earning a masters degree in English at St. Cloud State, he fulfilled his dreams and taught in Turkey and traveled the Middle East for three years. He came back to marry the love of his life, Susan Mitsven, in 1975, and they crisscrossed the globe together for over 40 years. Daughters Amanda and Jennifer were born in Japan, where Dan and Susan taught at Kobe College for six years, but the couple returned to the United States and settled in Texas in 1983. The family eventually expanded to include sons-in-law Eric Bresie and Jay Turner and grandchildren Leo Bresie, Zoey Turner and Nora Turner.

Dan was preceded in death by his parent, Delbert and Esther Kasten.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, sister, brothers, nieces and nephews. His family also includes friends from church, colleagues from schools across the globe, and every student he ever taught.

After his family, Dan loved nothing more than Greenhill School, where he taught for 33 years. Students in his English, World Religions, and Meditation classes valued his kindness, his passion, and his authenticity. He taught them Shakespeare, poetry, and composition, but more importantly, he taught them to center themselves with three deep breaths and to live with purpose and gratitude.

A tribute to his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, at Greenhill School in Rose Hall (Marshall Family Performing Arts Center, 4141 Spring Valley Rd., Addison, TX 75001).

In lieu of flowers, the most fitting honor for Dan would be a donation to the scholarship fund at Greenhill School.

He is survived in Minnesota by his sister, Lorna Taylor of Austin; brothers Gary of Faribault, Minnesota, and Keith and David of LeRoy, Minnesota, and their families.

Bernice Carllie Ada (Schmidt)
LINGBECK

1924-2017

Bernice Lingbeck, 92, of Shakopee, Minnesota, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 8, 2017.

On Nov. 10, 1924, Bernice Carllie Ada Schmidt was born to Herman and Amanda (Poeschel) Schmidt. Bernice enjoyed growing up on the family farm near Spring Valley, Minnesota. As a girl, she liked spending time raising her own calf, cleaning and shucking black walnuts, and making homemade ice cream in their old wooden ice cream maker.

After graduating from high school, Bernice completed normal training and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. Not only did she teach first through eighth graders, but she also had to arrive at the school bright and early to get the stove going so it would be warm for the children. Bernice enjoyed being a teacher and spending time with the children.

One evening Arlin’s aunt Hazel, who lived in Spring Valley, invited Bernice to her house for dinner. She had a plan to set Bernice up with her nephew. It worked, and Bernice and Arlin hit it off immediately. Their love grew quickly, and they exchanged wedding vows on Nov. 17, 1946. They settled in Austin, Minnesota, where Arlin worked for Hormel, and they led a very traditional life. Bernice gave up her teaching job to become a homemaker, and she always enjoyed getting together for a good cup of coffee with the women in her Austin neighborhood. In October 1947, they were blessed with a wonderful daughter, Sharon.

As a family, they enjoyed vacationing on Lake Saganaga at the end of the Gunflint Trail near Grand Marais, Minnesota. In the early years, they would pitch a tent on an island, fish, and explore the area with their Irish setter, Penny. Later, they liked the convenience of a cabin and became lifelong friends with the family who owned the resort.

Bernice had many hobbies. She was a wonderful baker and enjoyed making special birthday cakes in the shape of animals for her daughter and nephews. She was also very skilled at cross-stitching — one year taking first place at the Mower County Fair for her detailed work on a beautiful linen tablecloth and matching napkins. Bernice loved to stay in touch with friends and family and wrote many letters over the years. She was a loyal pen pal. In her later years, she enjoyed playing Scrabble, Canasta, doing jigsaw puzzles and word-find books with her family and special friends. Reading was one of her favorite hobbies, and she would spend many evenings enjoying her wide variety of books.

After Arlin retired, they moved north to Backus, Minnesota. They enjoyed 12 years of retirement together and traveled extensively during that time. In January 1993, Arlin passed away suddenly at home from a massive heart attack. Bernice missed him deeply, but she was a strong woman and persevered. Soon she left Backus to be closer to her family. Over the years, she lived in the Minnesota communities of Edina, Prior Lake, and finally Shakopee. She was a resident at St. Gertrude’s Health and Rehab Center since April 2013, and enjoyed being close to her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandson, Wil.

Bernice was a very classy lady, and she will be missed by many. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Gerry) Proskin; grandchildren, Steve Proskin and Emily (Bill) Benson; great-grandson, Wil Benson; brother, Dan (Lee) Schmidt; and other loving relatives and friends. Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, Arlin; parents, Herman and Amanda Schmidt; and siblings, Paul Schmidt and Neva (Carroll) Winslow.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, with visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation, 833 S. Marschall Road, Shakopee.

Vera (Hildreth, Pace) Carney

1921-2016

U.S. VETERAN

Vera Hildreth Pace Carney, 95, a longtime resident of Austin, Minnesota, died on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, from complications of dementia in Portland, Oregon.

Vern was born on Sept. 27, 1921, in Litchfield, Minnesota, the first of four children, to parents Marie and Leslie Hildreth. She was raised in and around Spirit Lake, Iowa. She moved to Austin with her family as a high school senior, but never forgot her classmates of the previous 12 years. For years she looked forward to the good times when they got together for school reunions. She told many stories about her wonderful friends and her life in Iowa. She always claimed her Class of 1939 was the best and brightest.

Vera enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and was stationed in El Centro, California, for the duration of the war. There she met and married another young Marine far away from home, Millard Lee Pace. They had a daughter together, Alice Pace Talbott, but divorced soon after the war.

Vera was a resident of Austin from 1945 until her move to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2008 to be near her sister, Alice. She had a variety of jobs in her many years in Austin. One of her most memorable and life-changing was a job at the Hormel plant just after World War II. It proved she had the strength and willingness to work hard and succeed. She soon enrolled in a two-year teaching course and ended up teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in the countryside of Mower County.

Vera took advantage of the GI Bill two years later and was off to college to pursue a degree in teaching. She got her bachelor’s degree at Iowa State Teacher’s College and her master’s degree in teaching from Minnesota State University at Mankato, Minnesota. She taught in the Austin Public Schools as a first-grade teacher for a number of years before going back to college, this time at the University of Minnesota to pursue her interest in library science.

After earning another master’s degree, she joined fellow teacher and friend, Margaret “Becky” Beck, and the two became Austin’s first elementary school librarians. They wrote a series of books on introducing elementary children to the library during their years together. The last job Vera held before retiring in 1981 was to set up a library for post-high school students at the Austin Area Vocational Technical Institute.

In 1980, Vera married Mort Carney, a long-time acquaintance and teacher and administrator in Austin schools. They had many wonderful times together, traveling, spending time with family, entertaining friends, gardening and yard work, bicycling, hiking through the Hormel Nature Center and just enjoying being together. Sadly, Mort died in July 1986, but Vera held many fond memories of their time together in her heart.

At the age of 80, in 2001, Vera decided to sell her house and move to an apartment in downtown Austin. Here she continued to visit friends and enjoyed being near the Elder Center, where she took many classes.

She moved again in 2008, to be closer to her sister, Alice, and many of her nieces, nephews, and their families. She made new friends at her independent living apartment, Summerhouse in Shoreview, Minnesota, and moved again, this time reluctantly, in 2015, to an assisted living facility some time after her sister moved there.

After Vera’s beloved sister, Alice, died in February 2016, she again reluctantly moved, this time to Portland, to be closer to her daughter, Alice. She was in a memory care facility there when she died.

Vera is survived by her only child, Alice Pace Talbott; her three grandchildren, Rebecca (Christopher Black) in Arizona, Benjamin (Ashley Lindberg) in Oregon, and Edward (Allison) and their family of three (her great-grandchildren) Cailyn, Colby and Camryn Jade, in southern California; her sister, Mary Herrick; and 12 loving nieces, nephews and their children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Leslie (wife Naomi); her sister, Alice Tedrow (husband, Richard); her brother-in-law, Robert Herrick; and her husband, Mort Carney.

Vera was a special lady and will be missed by all. The family hopes to share some of their favorite memories at her memorial service on July 1.

Her daughter, 12 nieces and nephews, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren will meet with friends and family during a celebration of life at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Austin. A lunch will be served at the church following the service. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery.
