Beverly Ruth (Finley) Klusmeier, born August 4, 1933 in LeRoy, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Dorris (Engstrom) Finley, was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, May 18, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

At a young age, her family moved from LeRoy to Rose Creek, Minnesota, where she attended school for 10 years. The family then moved to Otranto, Iowa, where she graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1951. After graduation, she worked for two years in the offices of Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa.

They adopted two children: LuAnn Marie and Lora Lee. When Leslie passed away suddenly in 1966, Beverly continued to live in Otranto for the next 68 years, where she raised their young daughters, had many friends, and attended Otranto Community Church, where she taught both Sunday School and Bible School.

She was also an active member of the Ladies Aide there. She was baptized by Reverend LaBrenz at the First Baptist Church in Austin, Minnesota, and renewed her Christian faith with the Reverend David Jerimiah Ministries in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2013.

Beverly worked at various part-time jobs until her daughters were grown, after which she worked at Cargill Corp. in Albert Lea, MN, retiring after 23 years. She then worked part-time at Casey’s Pizza in St. Ansgar until her health failed.

Phyllis Marie (Reed) Cole

1924-2017

Phyllis Marie (Reed) Cole, 92

Phyllis Marie (Reed) Cole, 92, passed away in Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday, February 27, 2017.

Phyllis was born in Estherville, Iowa, on April 14, 1924. She was the second of six children born to Bruce and Bertha Reed. She grew up in Hollandale, Minnesota, and graduated from high school in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Phyllis and her brother, Veryl, were attending college in Mankato, Minnesota, when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Veryl immediately left for the service and Phyllis stayed and completed her teaching degree. Her first job was at a one-room school west of Oakland, Minnesota, where she taught first through eighth grades. She would shovel a path through the snow to the outdoor bathrooms and start the wood stove before the students arrived.

In March 1944, she rode a train to San Diego, California, where she married a local Hollandale boy, Meredith Cole, who was serving his country in the U.S. Navy.

Meredith and Phyl owned and operated Cole’s Grocery in Oakland for many years before selling the business. Phyllis worked in the store and kept the books. Later, Meredith had the Kirby Vacuum distributorship and Phyllis again kept the books.

Phyllis and Meredith enjoyed camping and hosted an annual pig roast event at their Oakland farm that drew family and friends from miles around. Phyllis enjoyed traveling with her husband and they were blessed with many opportunities to do so. They retired to Crystal Beach, Florida, in 1975 where Phyllis started a Sunday school class for children at the Crystal Beach Community Church. Their three children, David, Myrna and Don, eventually moved their families to Florida as well.

After Meredith’s untimely passing on Dec. 23, 1986, Phyllis continued to live in Crystal Beach, supported by nearby family and friends. She enjoyed visits from local grandchildren, Waylyn and Cole Baumann, Trisha Cole, Ashley Cole, church members, and winter visits from extended family.

By 2010, as she became more frail, son David and his wife, Bonnie, moved her to an assisted living facility near their new residence near Asheville.

Surviving are sons, David Cole and wife Bonnie, of Leicester, North Carolina, and Donald Cole of Holiday, Florida; daughter, Myrna Baumann and husband Michael of Crystal Beach; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Jean Davis of Norman, Oklahoma; and sister-in-law, Doloris Reed of Albert Lea.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Meredith; grandson, Cole Baumann; brothers, Veryl, Bruce and Robert; and an infant sister who died at birth.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at Crane Community Chapel in Austin, Minnesota.

Edith Marie (Olson) Guy

1920-2017

Edith Marie Olson was born May 25, 1920, in rural Adams, Minnesota, to Peder and Isabelle (Hagen) Olson. She attended and graduated from LeRoy (Minnesota) High School in 1938. On Oct. 19, 1938, Edith married the love of her life, Wayne Guy, in Osage, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Robert Wayne Guy and Kathleen Marie Guy.

Together Wayne and Edith farmed in the Grand Meadow area for about 30 years. Edith also volunteered at the Ostrander (Minneosta) Nursing home for 28 years, loving every minute she spent there visiting, playing cards, or helping out wherever she could. Whether dancing with Wayne or attending her birthday club, you could always count on many smiles and even a hug from Edith. Edith and Wayne loved dancing so much, on the way home one night they stopped the car to dance in the street, only to be told by an officer to go dance at home. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding her very own snowmobile. Edith loved traveling with Wayne during the winter months. While traveling you could always find Edith on the beach looking for pretty rocks to keep as souvenirs.

Elizabeth "Betty" (Simme) Schummer

1926-2017

Elizabeth "Betty" Schummer, 90, of Le Roy, Minnesota, died Saturday, May 20, 2017, at her home.

She was born December 3, 1926, in Sturgis, South Dakota, the daughter of Peter and Mabel (Simme) Schummer. Betty moved into the Adams Group Home in 1982, and then in 1991 moved to Le Roy, where she resided for approximately 25 years with three other friends. Betty enjoyed being a part of her community, working at the Kids Carnival during the Summerfest and the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which had been held for many years in Betty’s backyard. Betty touched the hearts of all people she met. She had a smile and a wave for everyone.

She enjoyed working every day at the Cedar Branch DAC. When work ran out, she still enjoyed going, if only to be with her friends.
