Julia Amanda (Biel, Kellogg) TITUS 1942-2017
Obituary for Julia Titus
Julia Amanda Titus, of LeRoy, Minnesota, passed away from ALS (Lou
Gehrig's) on May 8, 2017 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Visitation will be held at Saetersdal Lutheran Church at 21477
County 30 in rural Harmony on Saturday, May 13th at 2:00 pm; a Memorial
service also will be at Saetersdal on May 13th at 3:00 pm with Pastor
James Leonard of Valley Christian Center officiating. A graveside service
will follow at Saetersdal Lutheran Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home is
handling all the service arrangements.
Julia was born in Wykoff to Harvey and Mary Biel on February 19, 1942.
She went to high school at Harmony High School and graduated in 1960.
Upon graduation, she became a nurse's aide at Saint Mary's Hospital in
Rochester before marrying Morris Kellogg in September of 1961. While a
nurse's aide, she provided care to a weathered, white-hair man from Ketchum,
Idaho – it was Ernest Hemingway, who was at Saint Mary's for treatment.
After settling in as a homemaker and mother to raise four children
with Morris for the next two decades, Julia returned to Saint Mary's to
earn her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1982. She worked
for the next several years as an LPN at Saint Mary's.
Morris and Julia divorced in 1987, and she relocated to Kansas City,
Missouri, where she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital as an
LPN for 25 years. Her long-time companion, Rollins Mack Carpenter, passed
away in 2002.
Julia later moved to Lamoni, Iowa, where she married Thomas
Richard "Dick" Titus, a military veteran, retired pilot and long-time
rancher, in 2003. After retiring from her nursing career and then surviving
a battle with breast cancer, Julia and Dick enjoyed many happy years at
their ranch in Iowa, where they raised Angus cattle until full retirement
in 2015. Julia often tended her gardens at home, and took care of dozens
of stray cats who curiously found their way to the Titus Ranch, drawn in
by the tender treatment of a veteran caregiver who never quite gave up
nursing.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Mary, one
brother – Clifford; a sister – Cynthia; and a sister-in-law, Rosamond Biel.
Julia is survived by her brother Stan (LaVonne) of Durand, Wisconsin;
sister Marion of Harmony; brother Louis of DeWitt, Iowa; son Daniel of
Lake City; son Scott (Lorianne) of Fountain; daughter Polly (James) of
LeRoy; son Shannon (Kellyn) of Leesburg, Virginia; twelve grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; and many special friends, including Jerilyn
Grooters, Laura Rasmussen and Dave and Yasko Titus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association
(www.alsa.org).
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the ICU and Hospice
teams at Saint Mary's for their support in her final days.

Arthur L. Kuchera 1945-2017
Arthur L. Kuchera, 72, of Austin, Minnesota, died at his home, surrounded
by his wife and children, early Thursday morning, May 4, 2017.
Art was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on Feb. 2, 1945, and graduated
from Glenville High School in 1963. Shortly thereafter he began his career
at Hormel Foods where he worked in the cost department until he retired in
2006. He then became the City Clerk of Mapleview, Minnesota. On March 3,
1972, he married Susan Larson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. The
bond between Art and his wife Sue was impossible to miss, as you would
rarely see one without the other.
Their love was found in their commonalities, particularly their love
of children and the outdoors. These shared interests led to their decision
to devote their lives to serving others, which is evident in how they spent
their free time volunteering for organizations like the Boy Scouts of
America, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, VFW and Real Hope for the Hungry.
While raising their three children together, they were extremely active
in Boy Scouting, where Art came to earn the Silver Scout Award, a very
esteemed award recognizing his example of hard work, self-sacrifice,
dedication and many years of service. This is the highest level of
achievement in the Boy Scouts of America.
Art also received an award recently from the Red Cross for having
donated several gallons of blood over the course of his lifetime. He also
served as the president of the Men’s Auxiliary at the VFW Club 2016/2017.
As active members of St. Olaf Church, Art and Sue served on many boards
and spent countless hours volunteering at their dining hall at the Mower
County Fair.
The only thing loved more by Art than serving others and his community
was his family. This was evidenced by his presence at all of his children
and grandchildren’s sporting events and extracurricular activities. He and
Sue enjoyed camping and swimming and playing outdoor games with their
children as pastimes. They also participated in the Austin Horseshoe
league from 1993-2016. Art will be missed by all who knew him and it is
believed that his legend will live on through the lives of those he touched.
Art is survived by his beloved wife Sue; his children, Brian (Gina)
Kuchera, Angie Stout, Melissa (Paul) Miller, Michelle Kuchera, and Kirk
(Katie) Kuchera; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one on
the way; his sister, Charlotte (Leroy) Nelson-Shocker; sister-in-law,
Sandy (Roger) Baker; and brother-in-law, James Larson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles (Eva) Kuchera and
Eleanora (Clarence) Knutson-Peters; his brother, Harold (Deanne) Kuchera;
and his sister-in-law, Marlene Larson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017,
at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Todd Portinga, Associate in
Ministry, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday,
