Roger Kenneth Larson 1936-2017
Roger Kenneth Larson, 80, of Lyle, Minnesota, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 17, 2017.
He was born July 13, 1936, to Alvin and Ethel (Swenson) Larson and attended grade school in Ostrander, Minnesota. While still a boy, he spent many hours studying math with his father, while his grandfather Swenson taught him to drive at the tender age of seven. He also learned farming from his father, and farmed with him on the family farm in Chester, Iowa, where he helped milk and raised his own steers. Roger attended high school in Harmony, Minnesota, and LeRoy, Minnesota, graduating from LeRoy High School in 1954.
While attending college in Austin, Minnesota, he met the light of his life on a blind date. She finished high school, while he completed two years of junior college. The blind date was the girl he married in 1957, Marlys Schocker. Their union was blessed with eight children, Deborah (Reuben “Sam”) Fraser of LeRoy, Robert (Peggy) of Spring Valley, Minnesota (now deceased), Timothy (Lori) of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, Richard (Karla) of Madison, Wisconsin, Jeffrey (Sharon) of Owatonna, Minnesota, Terry (Becky), of Dodge Center, Minnesota, Sheila of Jordan, and MaLisa (Matt) Fundine of Kasson, Minnesota.
Roger excelled in school, and was never afraid to try new projects or tackle hard work. Farming remained his first love, especially working with cattle, sheep and pigs, which he raised at different times. Many of the jobs he took to support his growing family also involved agriculture, including growing peas and pumpkins for the Festal Foods canning company in Owatonna.
Prior to retirement, Roger and Marlys embarked on the ambitious project of building their own house on land near Lyle. Though he had no training in construction, his math skills, native intelligence, and perseverance — and the help of his faithful wife and partner Marlys — resulted in a beautiful country home where he resided with Marlys until health concerns prompted a move to Field Crest Health Care.
He is survived by his loving wife Marlys; seven children; siblings Eileen, Karen (Julian), Janice, David (Shelly), and Diane (Adrian); and many special and beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and eldest son, Robert.
Roger was a wonderful, hardworking husband and father who will be missed by all who loved him.
Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 103 Pershing St. Lyle, with the Rev. Steven Woyen and Pastor Jane Wiersma officiating.
Funeral services will follow visitation starting at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be held at a later time.

Cassandra Lynn Askelson 1989-2017
Cassandra Lynn Askelson, 27, a Minnesota girl living in a Montana world, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017, after a short, but heroic, battle with cancer.
She was born September 30, 1989, in Owatonna, Minnesota. She grew up
with her parents, Mindi Federman Askelson and Steve Askelson and her
brother, Vinny. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Austin,
Minnesota, where she learned to love the land, the animals and the
outdoors. She especially loved horses and dogs. She was a member of
the Moscow 4-H Club and the Austin FFA. Through these, she spent a lot
of her summers showing steers and her horses. When she wasn’t working
with her animals, Cassie and her family spent summers along the Jersey
Shore. Days there were spent building sandcastles in the shade of a beach
chair or riding her boogie board in the surf.
She graduated from Austin High School and went on to attend Eastern
Wyoming College and transferred back to Rochester Technical Institute
where she earned her associate degree as a veterinary technician. After
graduation she headed west to Billings, Montana, where she worked as a
veterinary technician at Moore Lane Emergency Hospital and Boarding
Clinic. Her love of animals also took her to the Race to the Sky dog
sled races in Helena, Montana, every year where she tended to the animals
as a veterinary technician. She also worked at Highlands Elementary School
as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher, the Laurel Golf Course and
as a sales associate at Torrid. She was enthusiastically involved in
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Laurel, Montana, where as a member she
served on the church council, as a Sunday school teacher, and was an
avid leader in the music program.
She loved to travel and see the sights, capturing the wild beauty of Montana through her photography. She also loved to draw and sketch and was learning to play the guitar. She was an avid movie watcher and loved anything Disney. Car rides with her were always loud and fun with Disney and country jams sung at the top of her lungs. She loved to read fantasy, science fiction and anime genres. Starting in high school, Cassie developed a love for reading and writing poetry. She published a collection of her poems and was soon to publish another. What Cassie is most remembered for, though, was her warm heart and the way she touched the lives of everyone around her.
Cassie was a loving, devoted daughter and lively friend and her smile and laugh were pure sunlight. She was a devout believer in God and lived by those beliefs. However, her sass could make anyone laugh. Her fun, warmth, wit and tenderness will always be with those who knew her, and to know her was to love her.
Cassie is survived by her parents, Mindi Askelson, Steve Askelson and Julie Nelson; PopPop Burton Federman, grandma Mary Schroder; brothers Vinny, Chris and Tucker; sister, Abbey; uncles Allen Federman, Troy Askelson, Gordy Briggs, Tony Briggs, Barry Goldstein, Steve Wollschlager and Tim Jackson; her aunts, Heidi Skorin, Cecilia Rios, Sookie Federman, Terry Briggs, Barb Buckley, Paula Goldstein, Alicia Dammen, Paula Briggs, Donna Wollschlager and Kathy Jackson; along with her cousins Stephanie, Tucker, Kylie, Jesse, Skylar, Savannah, Emily, Nick, Grace, Kelly, Ryan and Jenny. She also has her Montana family, Carolyn Gregory, Michael Gregory, Katrina Burington, Aunt Shirley, Raychel, Kole, Madelynn Hust and Jackson Clark. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Argyle and Marjorie Askelson; her Nana Annette Federman and her aunt, Kathy Askelson.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 707 West Third St., Laurel, MT 59044.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Freeborn County 4-H, Highlands Elementary School in Billings, and Neveln Elementary School in Austin.
Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery in Billings. Condolences can be sent through www.cfgbillings.com through “Our Families.”

Peter Thomas Winkels
Peter Thomas Winkels, 69, of Rose Creek, Minnesota, died Sunday night, April 23, 2017, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Pete was born on February 8, 1948, in Minneapolis and was adopted by Casper Winkels and Blanche (Belshan) Winkels, on Deceember 21, 1949. He attended Austin Catholic Schools and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1966. Pete was a very proud member of the Boy Scouts where he became a member of the Order of the Arrow. He often spoke with fondness of his time spent in the Boy Scouts at Luck, Wisconsin.
Pete loved spending time at the Winkels’ family cabin on Sand Pointe Lake in northern Minnesota and enjoyed hosting several friends there over the years. It was there where he would learn to swim and fish and later would teach his children and grandchildren to do the same.
He also had a fondness for fast cars and won many trophies drag racing at Brainerd International Raceway.
On September 26, 1970, Pete married Debra VanEpps and had three children together. They were divorced in 1984.
Pete went on to fight for his beliefs as the union business agent during the P-9 Hormel strike in 1985. He was not called back to work at the Hormel plant and would later find rewarding work at the Sheriff’s Boys Ranch and Espeland Van Service. He enjoyed making a positive impact in people’s lives and seldom left people without a smile. His witty humor and vast library of quotes and facts were second to none.
Later in life Pete would spend 17 wonderful years with his special friend, Rita Stahl, and loved spending time with her and her children, Jessie and Ian. It was during that time when his two grandchildren were born, Amanda and Noah (Jeremy) Winkels. They were truly the light in his eyes. There was nothing in this world he would rather do than spend time with them; teaching them about life, laughter and love. He especially liked teaching them some of his unique shenanigans, “Guess What. Chicken Butt.”
Pete had a very strong Christian faith and was a devoted Catholic who could be seen regularly at any one of the local Catholic churches for Sunday Mass. It was his faith, family and friends that would give him comfort until the end. Pete Winkels was a great man and the world is a better place for having him in it. His like may never be known again and he will be sorely missed by all who have known him.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer, Duluth, Minnesota; his sons, Jeremy, Duluth, and Michael, New Brighton, Minnesota; and grandchildren, Amanda and Noah, Duluth.
There will be a funeral Mass at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. A “Celebration of All Things Pete” will follow at 3 p.m. at the Austin VFW.

John was one of the rare people who once you met, you would never forget. John was defined by his love for his children and his love for family. John was a survivor of polio (infantile paralysis) and carried that indomitable spirit with him always. He grew up with a love of cars, motorcycles and all things mechanical.
John spent a good portion of his working career at Iowa Manufacturing and other manufacturing concerns in the Cedar Rapids area, applying his mechanical skills as a production manager. John was one of those people that could fix just about anything.
John was a gifted artist who could create a stunning personal portrait, nature scene or a customized car or motorcycle that would amaze. He loved the outdoors, loved to fish and loved spending time at his getaway in Waubeek, Iowa, on the Wapsipinicon River. John also loved music and attending concerts, particularly the New Orleans Jazz Festival. But more than anything, John loved his children, Shannon and Sean.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held the second week in July at Waubeek. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a contribution to your favorite charity in John’s name.

James Cornelius Crowley 1934-2017
James Cornelius Crowley, 82, of Lansing, Minnesota, died peacefully at his country home on Friday, April 28, 2017.
Jim’s wish and prayer were to stay in his country home, that Jim and his beloved wife Jackie built in 1958. Jim’s sweetheart Jackie died Sept. 1, 2016; she could only wait eight months to see her Jimmy again. Our parents never wanted to be apart.
Jim was born December 28, 1934, to Evelyn and Rex Crowley in Chatfield, Minnesota. He married his sweetheart, Jackie Husemoller, on Oct. 22, 1955. Jim and Jackie were married at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Brownsdale, Minnesota, after returning from Korea. They have two children, Jane Crowley and Dan Crowley. Jim has three grandchildren that meant the world to him, Cody, Madison, and Emma Crowley. Jim loved being with his grandchildren, enjoyed being outdoors, snowmobiling, skiing, collecting classic cars, and just being around people. He would never do anything the easy way; he loved an adventure and making a normal day fun.
Jim started Crowley Beverage in 1967. He loved his work, customers, and co-workers. Life down in the warehouse was never dull. The stories and fun that were experienced at the Crowley Beverage will never be forgotten. Our dad’s true joy was his work and driving the beer truck. Cody, and even the family dog, were invited on the beer truck for deliveries, trips to the breweries, and liquor warehouses.
Our dad taught us how to drive anything with wheels and to go fast. Jim was always there for his kids and grandchildren and also all of their friends. Jim always helped people in need and always stepped in to help; he was the first one to pull someone out of the ditch or change a flat tire. Whatever his kids were doing my dad was doing it too, from moving the cows from one pasture to another, taking the boys dirt biking, or going for long walks in the woods.
Jim believed in three things: hard work, prayer, and fun. Jim never ever gave up, even when he was so sick he would ask “should I give up?” Jim was a true fighter in what he believed in.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Jim is also survived by his brother, Max Crowley; and three sisters, Mary Snyder, Colleen Lisk, and Sally Anderson. Jim loved his in-laws, dear friends, neighbors, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hayfield, Minnesota, with Father Tom Niehaus officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Waltham, Minnesota, with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and V.F.W. Post 1216.

Robert Arlo "Bob" Lamp 1932-2017
Robert Arlo “Bob” Lamp, 84, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and diabetes.
He was born in Austin, Minnesota, on June 25, 1932, to William J. and Cora Frances (Champlin) Lamp. At age 12 his family moved to Grand Meadow, Minnesota, where they ran a grocery store and meat locker.
He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1951, attended Gale Institute in Minneapolis and became a depot agent for The Milwaukee Road in a number of cities, including Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he met Jeanne Champine. They were married Jan. 1, 1954, and lived for a time in Vienna, South Dakota, but returned to Grand Meadow, where he was depot agent and also held the part-time position of village clerk.
It was in that capacity that he oversaw the building of the city-owned Meadow Manor Nursing Home, which opened in 1964. The Village Council asked him to run the facility “until they found someone suitable,” so he took a six-month leave of absence from the railroad. After six months, he was asked to take the job permanently and did so, running one of the most highly regarded facilities in the state for 28 years, then served as a consultant for six months before final retirement.
He was extremely active in the Minnesota State Association of Health Care Facilities and was on the board up through 2nd vice president. When asked to become president he felt unable to do so because of the time commitment involved. Whereas facilities of similar size usually had an administrator, a secretary, a treasurer, and sometimes an additional staff person, he handled all those duties himself.
He was an avid outdoorsman, known for successfully hunting deer, bear, antelope and many types of small game with both gun and bow and arrow. He traveled to Ignace, Ontario, for 50 years to fish, first with a group of friends and later with two of his sons. He also made three trips to Alaska to fish, during one of which he caught a 119 pound halibut.
He also excelled at trap and skeet shooting, winning many events and holding the Cedar Valley Conservation Club traveling trophy for skeet for nine straight years. He was elected to the Minnesota All-State Skeet Team in 1985 and 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne; four sons, Dean (Lynne), Glidden, Iowa, Dale, Bloomington, Minnesota, Greg (Meghan) Grand Meadow and Michael “Matt” (Lisa); one daughter, Laurie (Kevin) Kallinen; nine grandsons and one granddaughter; three sisters, Norma Simonson, Marlys (David) Goodsell, and Lou Ann Broten.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William III and Gaylan.
There will be no service at this time. In accordance with his wishes a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Meadow Ambulance Association or the Grand Meadow Lions Club.
Hindt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.Hindtfuneralhomes.com.
