Richard Clayton Miller

1949-2016

Richard Clayton Miller went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 10, 2016, at the age of 66 after fighting stage four cancer.

Richard Miller was born in Austin, Minnesota on December 2, 1949. He graduated from Austin High School, in Austin in 1967. Richard served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After the military, Richard established a career with Puffer-Sweiven, working on industrial gas and oil control systems all over the world and eventually moved to the sales department in New Braunfels, Texas.

Richard retired from Puffer-Sweiven 15 years ago and spent his retirement doing Kingdom Work for Jesus Christ. When his wife, Kathy, became ill, he spent all of his time caring for and serving her during her yearlong battle with cancer. During this time, he was an inspiration to us all and an example of a true Biblical husband.

Richard’s true calling was always bringing people closer to our Savior and he exemplified his love for the Lord in every area of life. A common memory of friends and family is of Richard guiding them through difficult times by pointing them to the Bible and to the grace and power of the Lord. He helped establish and also served as a deacon at Southwest Calvary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.

After moving to New Braunfels, Texas, he continued serving Christ by always helping those in need at First Baptist Church of New Braunfels. He would often be found serving as a deacon, church member, and dear friend. He led many Bible study classes, taught Sunday school, and was always ready to listen to anyone who needed a friendly ear. During those conversations, he made it clear that true peace and comfort could only be found in the Word of the Lord. He would also help church members, neighbors, and friends with various home or computer repairs or by providing oil changes and other automotive services.

He was a fantastic example of Christ's love to all who knew him, and was a huge part of everyone’s personal walk with God.

Thank you for teaching and showing us all how to deal with life and how to grow nearer to God. Everyone will miss you, but we all know we will see you again. By the way, your brothers have been eating all your Paydays and cupcakes, which is still not a meal.

Kathy was the love of his life, and he joined her on her birthday and legendary House-Cleaning Thursdays. Richard is survived by his two devoted daughters, Brenda Miller Pieper (husband William) and Rebecca Miller Thummel (husband Stan); and his beloved granddaughters, Jordan and Paige Pieper; his mother, Blanche Miller Kramer of New Braunfels; his sisters, Cheryl Acuna of Henderson, Nevada (husband Michael) and Debra Dorr of Austin, Minnesota; his brothers, David Miller of Richmond, Texas (wife Ila), Jim Miller of Monticello, Illinois (wife Deborah), Robert Miller of Spring Hill, Tennessee (wife Marceline) and Michael Miller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota (wife Jill); and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen Ann Miller, and his father, Clayton Louis Miller, both of New Braunfels.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 19, 2016, at First Baptist Church of New Braunfels, 733 Cross St., in New Braunfels, Texas.

Richard and his family request that instead of flowers, a memorial contribution be made to First Baptist Church that will be divided among the missionaries he supported and the benevolence fund or you can make a donation directly to Hope Hospice of New Braunfels.

Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home of New Braunsfels is in charge of arrangements.

Berniece Grace (Duken) Nelson

1934-2017

Berniece Grace (Duken) Nelson, 83, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, peacefully entered the gates of heaven on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, after spending the past seven and a half years at Prairie Manor Care Center.

Bernie was born April 18, 1934, to Herman and Marie (Anderson) Duken in Austin, Minnesota. She attended country school south of Blooming Prairie, graduated from Austin High School, and went on to receive her nurse’s training in Rochester. Bernie was a registered nurse at Saint Marys Hospital-Rochester, St. Olaf Hospital-Austin, and Prairie Manor Care Center-Blooming Prairie. Bernie fell in love with Mervin E. Nelson and they were married on Dec. 15, 1957, at First Baptist Church in Blooming Prairie, where the Nelsons remained members. To their union of 59 years, three rambunctious boys were born, Brian, Rodney, and Bruce, whom they lovingly raised. Berniece and Mervin enjoyed the warmth of Arizona winters for many years during retirement, as well as trips to Germany and Alaska. Bernie was a loving wife, an amazing mother, and an extraordinary grandmother.

She loved and treasured her family and prayed for them regularly. The legacy she left her family was a gift. Known for her excellent cooking and baking, Bernie would spend hours in the kitchen making meals and delights for her family. Her peach pie and homemade rolls were second to none. She loved to serve delicious meals in her home and was a meticulous house keeper, as well as an avid window washer with never a streak or fly speck left behind. Gardening and her beautiful flowers brought Bernie much joy. She quietly waged a long and weary battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

As she lay exhausted and vanquished, she gracefully slipped away from us. Her suffering finally ended as God carried her home to where her body and mind could be restored. All the while, she trusted in God’s promise of salvation and looked forward to entering her eternal home. She was a faithful daughter of God. Bernie always had a gentle spirit, filled with graciousness and a deep consideration of others. Precious moments and memories were made in her home that will always remain a part of her memory. Elizabeth L. (Sebek) "Bette" Bradash

1917-2017

Elizabeth L. "Bette" Bradash, 99, a long time resident of New Prague, Minnesota, died Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center.

Born February 26, 1917, in New Market, Minnesota, to Henry and Mary Sebek, her first years were spent helping her father at his sawmill and creamery in Plum Creek, Minnesota. In 1932 Bette moved with her family to New Prague where she finished high school. During World War II, she trained and worked in the nursing profession prior to being united in marriage to Francis Bradash.

Living in Austin, Minnesota, with her husband and four children, Bette was always volunteering where needed, spending many hours working with Catholic Charities and assisting migrant farm workers. She was personally involved with helping Spanish speaking families with relocation needs and was recognized by the Bishop of the Diocese of Winona for her extraordinary efforts. In addition, she was always thinking of others -- knitting stocking caps and making quilts, not to mention recycling greeting cards, never missing someone’s birthday.

She was very proud of her Bohemian heritage and had the privilege to travel to the Czech Republic while working on her ancestor’s history. From the verse “ Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” those words define Bette -- strong, peaceful dove, gentle and bright. Bette was dedicated in helping those in need with positive thoughts and her legacy will be passed on generations to come.

She leaves behind daughter: Sandy [Dick] Millerbernd, sons: Craig [Patti] Bradash and Bruce Bradash, special friend: Snigdha Sagar and daughter Sammy, nine grandchildren: Rebecca and Thomas Hanson, Matthew, Michelle, Danielle, and Eric Klatt, Heather Boyum, Jarad Behne, Katie Reich and several great-grandchildren. Awaiting Bette in heaven is her beloved husband, Fran, and daughter, Nancy, along with her parents and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, at Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague with Father David Barrett officiating. Friends may call at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Cemetery in New Prague following Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials are the preferred donor's choice.

Dawn Louise (Anderson) Morehouse

1953-2017

Dawn Louise Morehouse, 63, a longtime resident of Austin, Minnesota, died Jan. 4, 2017, at Our House Memory Care after a long and progressive battle with frontal temporal dementia.

Dawn was born July 7, 1953, at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin to Eugene and Helen (Lee) Anderson, she grew up in Brownsdale, Minnesota and graduated from Hayfield High School in 1971. She worked at Sterling State Bank as a teller. On Jan. 17, 1976, she married Tom Morehouse in Austin. Dawn stayed home to raise their three children until all of them were in school full time. She then attended Riverland Community College, which prepared her for positions with Gopher Distributing, Mower County Council for Handicapped and Nelson Family Dental, where she retired in 2009 after receiving her diagnosis.

Once retired, Dawn and Tom spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, until her progression got to where it was hard for her to travel. Dawn never tried to hide the fact that she had dementia — she wanted people to know and didn't want them to treat her any differently. While in Mesa, Dawn participated in a couple's golf league, played water volleyball, spent her afternoons in the pool, enjoyed rides in the desert and mountains and even skydived a few times. Dawn loved sports and enjoyed playing tennis, racquetball and golf.

Dementia took a lot from Dawn -- but it wasn't able to take the love she had for her family.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; sons, Joshua and Jonas (Michelle), both of Austin; daughter, Jessica (Jacob) Knox of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren, Hunter, Kadence, Savanna, Landen, Nevaeh, Gavin, Calvin and Hannah; and her brother, Steven Anderson of Austin.

Dawn was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Anderson, mother, Helen (Lee) Planz and stepfather, Hugo Planz.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. David Lieder officiating. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday and for one hour before the service on Monday morning.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimers Association.
