Laverne Palmer Sorenson 1929-2016
Laverne Palmer Sorenson, 87, of Burnsville, Minnesota, formerly
of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Arbor Lane
Memory and Specialty Care, Burnsville, Minnesota from complications
of True Autonomic Failure.
He was born March 7, 1929, in Owatonna, Minnesota, the son of Herman
and Kristine (Ramse) Sorenson. Verne grew up on the family farm outside
of Blooming Prairie. He left school at age 16 and worked as a hired hand
before enlisting in the U.S. Army in December 1946, serving until his
discharge in 1948. Verne was a corporal in active duty in Korea. He
visited Japan at least once. Upon his return home, he completed his
last two years of high school and remained in the Reserves for six years.
Verne attended the University of Minnesota on the G.I. Bill and took ROTC
courses while he studied Agriculture Education. On June 13, 1953 Verne
was appointed a Reserve commissioned officer of the Army as 2nd Lieutenant,
and was designated a "Distinguished Military Graduate."
Upon receiving his degree in Ag Education, he taught in Pemberton and
Lanesboro. It was in Pemberton that Verne met the love of his life, Marion
Hanson, at a square dance. They were married on April 3, 1955, at Salem
Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota. In 1956, the couple moved from
Waseca to Lanesboro. After teaching in Lanesboro, Verne earned his M.S.
degree in Guidance and Counseling from Winona State University. He then
served as a guidance counselor in Preston and Southland.
Verne, Marion and family were members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church
since moving to Austin in 1975. The Sorensons remained in their Austin
home for 40 years, while they worked, enjoyed their family, and later in
retirement years traveled all over the U.S.
Family was of the greatest importance to Verne, and education was a
priority -- all five Sorenson children attended college. They were also
devoted to the in-laws and grandchildren, enjoying the special privilege
of helping raise Ashley and Darrin. Verne was especially proud to watch
his children or grandchildren playing (or conducting) in the Austin
Symphony Orchestra. The Sorenson family outings included picnics,
hikes, trips to apple orchards, and rides to Hayward to check on the
land. Simple things were a great joy to Verne. It gave him great pleasure
to give his grandchildren money for candy at Ankeny's.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marion Sorenson of Burnsville,
his children Cynthia (Carl) Albing, David (Susan) Sorenson, Vicki (Tom)
Kowalsky, Margaret (Sam) Seltz, and Katherine (Kevin) Sellers; 14
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings Allan Sorenson,
Sharon Walters, June Buenger and many nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother
Maynard, and sisters Irene and Delores.

Everett L. Murphy 1918-2016
Everett L. Murphy passed away in the hospital from heart failure, a
month after celebrating his 98th birthday with his family.
He was born to Agnes and Francis Murphy near Lyle, Minnesota, nearly
a century ago on Aug. 13, 1918. His mother Agnes died two weeks after
Everett's birth. His grandparents lovingly raised him on the farm, in
a house with kerosene lamps and outdoor plumbing. In his high school
senior essay, Everett concluded that his achievements were the ability
to do many different jobs on the farm, and he learned how to treat and
get along with different kinds of people.
After high school, he attended business school in Mankato, Minnesota.
Murphy Finance (no relation) offered Everett his first job; the managers
recognized his work ethic and outgoing personality. His first job bonus
was meeting his future wife at work. World War II interrupted his career
for five years; the U.S. Army stationed Everett in San Diego and Hawaii.
In January 1944, Ruth Alice Mohn traveled from Minnesota to San Diego for
their wedding. Discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Master
Sergeant, Everett returned to work for the finance company. He and Ruth
lived in Idaho Falls, Duluth, Minnesota, and eventually settled in St.
Paul. Their daughter, Mary Jo, was born in Duluth in 1949.
A larger company purchased his employer in 1971 and Everett became
the manager of Twin City Coop Credit Union. After successfully placing
the credit union on a growth trajectory, Everett retired in 1982. The
credit union, renamed Spire, today has over 60,000 members. He and Ruth
enjoyed their retirement traveling the country in their motor homes and
camping with their granddaughters, Melanie and Shannon. Like many Minnesota
snowbirds, the couple discovered the sunny southwest, beginning with
Brownsville Texas. The warm skies of Arizona drew them next. Everett
lived in Arizona for 20 years before relocating to MorningStar Retirement
Community in Boise to be near family.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth. Everett was Ruth’s primary
care giver when her health was failing. The couple enjoyed 65 years of
marriage.
He is survived by daughter Mary (Dennis) of Meridian; granddaughters
Melanie (Jeffrey Evans) of Laramie, Wyoming and Shannon (Jesse) Gray of
Meridian; and great-grandchildren Anna and Ethan Gray of Meridian.
A memorial service will be held at MorningStar Retirement Community,
Boise, Idaho, at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 29. Donations in Everett’s memory may
be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 331 N. Linder Road, Eagle, Idaho, 83616.

Margaret Ann (Watson) Williamson 1923-2016
Margaret A. Williamson, 93, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota,
died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at Prairie Manor Care Center in
Blooming Prairie.
Margaret Ann Watson was born August 2, 1923, in Oak Park,
Illinois, the daughter of Clyde and Jenny (Conway) Watson.
She grew up in Oak Park and graduated from Oak Park High
School in 1941. Following high school, she attended secretarial
school and later worked for the Chicago Motor Club, which
eventually became part of the American Automobile Association.
Margaret married the love of her life, Frank Williamson, in
Oak Park on Aug. 10, 1944. At the time, Frank served in the
U.S. Navy and commanders cut his ship's leave short, leaving
the new couple little time to plan or celebrate their wedding.
In 1947, the couple moved to Lemont, Illinois, to follow
Frank’s lifelong dream of being a farmer. They later moved to
Sandwich, Illinois, to work for another farmer. Jill, the
couple’s first child, was born there. The opportunity to
rent a farm took the couple to Belvidere, Illinois, in 1950
and they bought a separate farm in that area in 1958. During
their years in Belvidere, Margaret gave birth to their sons
Terry, David and Mark.
A larger farm in Waltham, Minnesota, became available for purchase
and the Williamson family moved there in 1968. Upon moving to Minnesota,
Margaret became a member of First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie
and became very active in the congregation through teaching Sunday
school and volunteering for other activities. Margaret continued
to live on the Waltham farm until 1998, when she and Frank retired
to a new home in Blooming Prairie. She was very happy in their new
home and lived there until 2012, when she moved to Prairie Manor Care
Center for health reasons.
In her free time, Margaret enjoyed gardening and homemaking.
Her family relished the special meals she frequently
prepared and the desserts she lovingly baked. They also admired
Margaret for her lifelong devotion to Frank and his dream to be
a farmer, even though he was born and raised in Chicago. She was
a city girl who became the perfect farm wife and allowed Frank to
follow his dreams without ever complaining.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Frank Williamson of Blooming
Prairie, Minnesota; her children: Jill (Terry) Gamlin of Huntington,
Indiana, Terry (Diane) Williamson of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, David
(Shelley) Williamson of Woodbury, Minnesota, Mark (Debra) Williamson
of New Brighton, Minnesota; grandchildren: Michelle (Todd) Dischinger

Camille G. (Boit) Becker 1916-2016
Camille G. Becker, 100, of Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully on
September 28, 2016.
She was born to Louis and Antoinette Boit in Dilworth, Minnesota, on
July 5, 1916, (although she always celebrated her birthday on the Fourth
of July). She was one of eleven children (seven survived into adulthood)
raised in the city's "Little Italy" neighborhood during the Great
Depression. Under the influence of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Camille
yearned to become the "modern" American woman she watched at the movies.
She and her sister Pat claimed they were the first women to wear pants
in Dilworth. It was the 1930s and the two teenagers thought the town
could use a bit of glamour, so they purchased red and white wide-legged
pants from a fashion catalogue and strolled downtown. When their father
got word of the spectacle, he swiftly put an end to the display.
There was only so little hard-working parents could do to discipline
seven children! As teenagers the Boit sisters would sneak out of their
bedroom window and run across the yard with their heels and lipstick in
hand. It was the height of the Jazz Age and they were set on catching
rides to the Big Band nightclubs and ballrooms in Fargo, dancing through
the night and sneaking back in before dawn. As a young girl Camille would
sit on the banks of the swimming stream and watch the trains on the Northern
Pacific Line, imagining the destinations of its passengers.
Following high school she headed for the Twin Cities, and after graduating
from cosmetology college became employed as a manicurist at the St. Paul
Hotel. She then travelled to Billings, Montana, where she became a buyer
and designer of hats in the millinery department of the Hart-Albin
department store. From there she ventured to Portland, Oregon, where
she moonlighted as a cigarette girl and worked for the fashion retailer
Nicholas Ungar, which was later purchased by Nordstrom's.
During World War II she volunteered making dressings and raising funds for
war bonds. After the war she returned to Minnesota and married Walter ("Curly")
Becker in July of 1948 at St. Elizabeth Church, Dilworth. She had two
children, Carla and Scott, and fulfilled her dream of owning a supper
club -- aptly named Curly's. At the club she took great pleasure in
greeting patrons nightly at the door with a string of pearls tied in
a unique fashion, and developed an esteemed reputation as a businesswoman
and club matron through her ability to curate
entertainment and dining. Curly's drew in customers from all over, even
attracting celebrities Peggy Lee, Phyllis Diller, Lawrence Welk and Bob
Hope. The Becker's moved to Austin in the late 1960s and opened a cocktail
lounge, The Lantern, and later became proprietors of Paramount Liquors.
She was a parishioner of St. Edward's Catholic Church. She enjoyed
cooking, baking, reading and following politics and current events. Camille
embodied a true civic spirit: believing in the virtues of social, political
and religious equality. She will be remembered by her family and friends
as an all-American woman, truly ahead of her time.
She is survived by
one sister, Lorraine Tix of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, daughter Carla
Becker-Wyant of Austin, son, Scott (Julie) Becker of North Oaks;
grand-children Carissa Wyant of Robbinsdale, Courtney Wyant of Austin,
Cody Wyant of London, England, Jenna (Corey) Christensen of Victoria,
Ellie (Connor) O'Neill of Arden Hills and Brett Becker of Minneapolis;
one great-grandchild, Emmet Christensen and many nieces, nephews and
great-nieces and nephews across the country.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; parents; brother
Jimmy Boit, sisters, Rose Knoll, Marian Mills, Patricia Gaustad, Gladys
Masters and son-in-law James Wyant.
A private family gathering will be held to remember her. To honor her
vivacious spirit, throw a party or simply show a random act of kindness.
