Velma Isabel (Malcomson) Moe

1923-2013

BURIAL AT LE ROY, MINNESOTA

July 4, 1923 - January 29, 2013 (age 89)

Obituary

Velma Isabel Moe, loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, went to be with God on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday February 2, 2013 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church with Rev. Herman Bakker officiating. Burial will be at the LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to the visitation on (Friday) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy, Minn and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Velma was born July 4, 1923 in Cresco Iowa, to Alvin and Rosina Malcomson. She was raised on a farm adjacent to Hayden's Prairie. She attended school in Chester and was active in the 4-H Club. Velma graduated from Cresco High School and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught in a rural one-room school in the Oakdale and Chester school district for four years. When World War II started, Velma moved to California with two of her friends and worked as a secretary and clerk in Long Beach, California.

Velma married Arnet Moe on November 6, 1945 in LeRoy where they then made their home. They had four sons, Dennis, Mickey, Francis, and John. Velma was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She spent many years as the chief financial officer of her husband Arnie's garage in Le Roy. She also worked part-time at the LeRoy Ostrander School cafeteria. She was active in the VFW Auxiliary and the LeRoy Lutheran Church's Ester Circle.

She enjoyed Square Dancing while it was popular in LeRoy. Velma loved to travel to see new things. She and her family traveled to California several times, to the east coast and Florida three times, and to northern Minnesota numerous times to visit friends and relatives. One of the most memorable events on a trip happened in Yellowstone Park. While stopped to look at the bears with all the windows rolled up, Velma began looking for her camera. A bear discovered that her wing-vent window was not latched and pushed it open with its nose. Looking for a snack, the bear instead got a whack when Velma discovered where and how close the bear's nose was. The family quickly moved on, but the kids were excited because they saw Mom slap a bear.

While most of her traveling was in the United States, she and her son, John, traveled to Europe in 1979 to visit her first grandson. She liked to take photographs and collect them. Her home is full of pictures of friends and family as well as places she had visited. She enjoyed Sunday drives around the local area. In recent years, she always pointed out how time had changed things around her childhood home.
