Nancy Jean (Jahr) Cummings

Nancy Jean Jahr Cummings, 69

Nancy J. Cummings, 69, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, December 14, 2015, at her home.

Nancy Jean Jahr was born February 27, 1946, in Austin, Minnesota, the daughter of Orvis and Alice (Smith) Jahr. She grew up in Austin, graduating from Pacelli High School in 1964 and going on to earn her degree from the Austin Area Vocational Technical Institute as a beautician. On July 16, 1966, Nancy was united in marriage to Roger L. Cummings Sr. at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, where she was a lifetime member. For the first four years of their marriage, Nancy and Roger lived in Booth Bay Harbor, Maine, before returning to Austin. In 1971, she opened Nancy's Beauty Shop, retiring in the fall of 2015 due to health concerns. In her leisure time, Nancy enjoyed fishing with Roger, reading, travel, restaurants and cooking. She especially loved her time being with and caring for her grandchildren. Nancy will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her husband Roger Cummings Sr. of Austin, Minnesota; her children: Chris (Doug) Zahradnik, Roger (Tonya) Cummings Jr. and Jason (Kim) Cummings, all of Austin, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Amanda, Samantha, Mitchell, Kyla, Blake, Lee; and one great-granddaughter Payton; siblings: Richard (JoAnne) Jahr and Marlys (Kenny) Haney, both of Austin, Minnesota, William (Brenda) Jahr of Bock, Minnesota, James (Becky) Jahr of Rochester, Minnesota, Robert (Stephanie) Jahr of Deer River, Minnesota; sister-in-law Cindy (Mark) Ulland of Kasson, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Orvis and Alice Jahr.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. The Cummings family will greet friends from 12 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Betty Jorgenson, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, Decmber 4, 2015, in Decorah, Iowa.

Service: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Paul Lutter officiating.

Obituary

Betty J. Jorgenson, age 87 of Austin died Friday morning, December 4, 2015 at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa, at the age of 87.

Betty Jean (Winslow) Jorgenson was born on June 14, 1928 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Ralph and Myrtle Jeanette (Hyland) Winslow. She graduated from Austin High School with the class of 1946.

Betty was united in marriage to Eugene Jorgenson on January 25, 1947, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, in Austin, Minnesota. They were blessed with three children: Jayne, Nancy, and Gregg. Betty worked at Hormel's, Nate's Clothing, Schaub Chiropractic, Robbin's Furniture, and East Side Red Owl. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, was active at the Austin Senior Center and was a member of the Sons of Norway.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Eugene on November 4, 2006; one grandson Kyle Jorgenson on August 25, 2002; one sister, Ruth Hoffman; and one brother, Marvin Winslow.

Betty is survived by her three children, Jayne Noble of Spring Lake Park, Minnesota; Nancy Jorgenson of Gig Harbor, WA; Gregg (Gwen) Jorgenson of Decorah, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Karen (Jerry) Becker of Lake City, Minnesota.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2015 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Visitation begins on Saturday at 10:00 p.m., one hour before the service, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Six Mile Grove Cemetery in rural Lyle, Minnesota. Gerald A. Scott

1939-2015

Obituary--

Gerald A. Scott, age 76 of Adams, Minnesota, died Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the Adams Health Care Center.

He was born November 8, 1939 in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Russell and Ruth (Aase) Scott. He grew up in Albert Lea, where he graduated from Albert Lea High School and worked at Weyerhaeuser. On June 14, 1975, he was united in marriage to Barbara Carter at the First United Methodist Church in Austin.

Following his retirement in 1986, Gerald and Barbara moved to Rogers, Arkansas. In 2012, they returned to Minnesota due to health issues, and resided in Adams. Gerald loved spending time with his dogs. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gerald is survived by his wife Barbara Scott of Adams, Minnesota; three nieces Linda Larson of Austin, Minnesota, Kathy Critzer of Mankato, Minnesota and Susan Hamilton of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; his nephew Gayland Hamilton of Kasota, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Ruth Scott.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. Visitation will take place beginning at 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery, Albert Lea. Memorials are preferred to the family. Obituary

Mary Dennison, age 74 of Austin, Minnesota died Monday, December 7, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.

Mary Ann was born May 30, 1941 in Preston, Minnesota to William M. and Alice M. (Peterson) Bowe. Mary grew up in Austin, and graduated from Austin High School. She was united in marriage to Frank Wayne Dennison Sr. on August 31, 1979 at Crane Community Chapel in Austin. Following Frank's death in July of 2011, Mary has continued to make Austin her home. She was a longtime member of Crane Community Chapel. Mary enjoyed camping, playing cards, baking and playing bingo. She most enjoyed time spent with her family and many friends.

Mary is survived by her sons, Lon Oleson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and William Oleson of Waseca, Minnesota; her daughter, Robin Oleson of Meriden, Minnesota; her grandchildren and great grandchildren; step sons, Todd Dennison and Steve (Kristie) Dennison, step daughters, Katie (Scott) Brechtel, and Melissa (Doug) Root; step daughter-in-law, Dawn Dennison; sisters, Beverly Ingersoll and Wanda (Tom) Engelman, all of Austin; also by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Alice Bowe, husband, Frank; step-sons, Frank W. Dennison Jr. and Chad Dennison.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Crane Community Chapel in Austin, with Pastor Dale Christiansen officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church, immediately preceding the service. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Thelma Idell (Pike) DeLaney

1921-2015

Thelma I. DeLaney, age 94 of Austin, Minnesota passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

Thelma Idell Pike was born April 14, 1921 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Isabelle (Kvale) Pike and the youngest of ten children. Thelma had many delightful stories of her childhood growing up on the farm. She attended school in Otranto, Iowa, where she graduated in 1939 as salutatorian of her class. On October 30, 1943, Thelma and Eugene J. DeLaney were united in marriage. They made their home in Lyle, Minnesota, where they raised six children and attended the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. For a time, Thelma worked as a telephone operator during their years in Lyle. She was a wonderful mother and enjoyed caring for her home and family.

She loved flowers and always had a beautiful garden. Her fabulous apple pies and other baked goodies were favorites among her family members. In 1972, Thelma and Gene moved to Austin and became members of Grace Lutheran Church. Thelma began working at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home, retiring at the age of 65 after a 15-year career in the dietary department. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting, making afghans for everyone in her family, as well as many quilts. Thelma often said that words could not express how much she dearly loved her family.

Thelma is survived by her children Jim DeLaney, Lonnie (Linda) DeLaney, Kathy (Paul) Behn, and Susan (Darryll) Thompson, all of Austin, Minnesota; nine grandchildren Darla (Dan) Dammen, Pamela (Bob) Lenz, Lyn (Jason) Merritt, Kristen (Zachary) Knox, Kelly Wiese, Natalie (Ben) Bushaw, Andrea Olson (Troy), Ginny (Zachary) Virock, Darcy (John) Corkill; 16 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Isabelle Pike, her husband Gene DeLaney in 1973, a granddaughter Tricia DeLaney, two sons Gary DeLaney, Steven DeLaney in infancy, all of her siblings, Harold Pike, Guy Pike, Archie Pike, Roy Pike, Dorothy Nabor, Truly Nelson, Alice Olson, Elmo Pike, Lucy Pike, and all their spouses. Thelma was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Near the end of her life, she said she was just waiting to go to heaven and when He said it was time to go, she would go.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 14, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, with Pastor Jeff Forbes officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 13 at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Union Presbyterian Cemetery, Stacyville, Iowa. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.

James Patrick Schmitz

1947-2015

James Patrick died from complication of liver failure surrounded by family and friends at St. Mary's hospital on December 16, 2015, at 11 a.m.

James Patrick Schmitz, "Jim," was born in Osage, Iowa, March 17, 1947. Jim graduated from Adams High School in 1965. He was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve in Vietnam from 1965-1968. Jim married Lynda Wacek in 1969. Jim lived in Rochester in the first part of his career, and worked as a butcher. Jim then worked for Hormel and went on to open a meat locker in Adams, Minnesota, in 1982. Throughout his career Jim worked construction, carpentry, snow removal and trimmed trees. In 1990, he began driving semi-truck for Styer. At Styer he had a reputation for safe driving and he earned an award for traveling a million accident-free miles.

Jim married Sue Gaskill (now Sue Schmitz) of Austin in 1995 and since the two have racked up millions of miles together. Jim always surrounded himself with nature and friends and family. He was a lover of the outdoors and Mother Nature was his sanctuary. Jim loved to ride motorcycle and was a member of the biker group the Dry Riders. Jim was sober for over 30 years, but still he knew how to have a great time right along with any party.

Jim was a most patient of fishermen. He spent hours on the water with a pole in hand just waiting for the big one to come his way. He also enjoyed hunting small and big game. He was a very skilled field dresser on account to his time working as a butcher. This made him a great guy to hunt alongside. In addition to being a sportsmen, Jim loved to tell stories to his children and grandchildren. He would talk about his travels, his trades or just about the people that he had met on his many adventures. Jim also had a great sense of humor and he loved to interact with banter and wise cracks.

Jim was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Sue Schmitz of Adams; his mother Florence Schmitz of Adams; his siblings: David and Julie Schmitz, Bob and Carol Schmitz, Roger Schmitz, Tom Schmitz, Mary and Mike Albercht and Ann Viveros. He also leaves his children: Micheal and Kris Schmitz of Rochester, Heather Schmitz of Rose Creek, Sarah Honeywell of Minneapolis, and Isaac Schmitz of Hayfield. Jim also had many grandchildren that he loved to play with and enjoy watching grow up, including: Megan, Connor, Oliver, Simon, Owen, Ryan, Amelia, Huxley, Theo and Webster. In addition to this long list of family members, Jim also extended his care and kindness out to many family members and friends beyond his immediate family. Jim was a fantastic cousin, step-uncle, second father, mentor and role model. He leaves behind many people that were connected with him in this important way as well.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 300 West Main Adams, MN. A Rosary will take place at 4:30 p.m., and a prayer service will be at 5 p.m., along with a visitation, all at the Adams Funeral Home. Social hour will follow at the American Legion from 7 to 9 p.m.

Jean Mary "Jeanne" (Gordon) Sweeney

1950-2015

Jean "Jeanne" Sweeney, 64

Jean "Jeanne" Sweeney, formerly of Dexter, Minnesota, passed away November 28, 2015, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after a brief illness.

Born Jean Mary Gordon on December 17, 1950, in Rochester, Jeanne lived in Dexter and attended Elkton High School, graduating in 1968. She married Marvin Sweeney on January 11, 1971, and moved to Alexandria, Virginia, then relocated to Winston-Salem in 1980.

They had two daughters, Dianne (Everett) Buswell, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Brenda (Jason) Smith, of Winston-Salem. Jean worked for Allegheny Airlines and later for U.S. Air, until retiring in 2005.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; both parents, Samuel and Madelyn; and a brother, Daniel.

She is survived by her daughters; six grandchildren: Maxx, Daulton, and Irelyn Buswell, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Justin, Caden and Addison Smith of Winston-Salem; two sisters: Elizabeth Gordon, of Eyota, and Margaret Reed of Rochester; and six brothers: Samuel Gordon of Eyota, Randy (Marilyn) Gordon of South Dakota, Michael Gordon of Austin, Timothy Gordon of Dexter, John Gordon of Ellendale and Wade Gordon of Mankato.

A memorial service will be held at a later day, with interment at Carimona Cemetery, near Preston.

Carol Marie Asleson

1940-2015

Carol Marie Asleson, age 75 of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, Minnesota.

Carol was born August 19, 1940 in Rochester, Minnesota to Melvin "Happy" and Ethel (Martin) Asleson. She grew up in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1958. After attending Austin Junior College for two years, Carol moved to Minneapolis where she lived for two years before moving back to Austin. She made Austin her home for over 72 years. An active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Carol enjoyed serving on her class reunion committees, gardening and baking. She canned produce, mostly beet pickles, and she made peanut brittle that was enjoyed by many people.

Carol is survived by several cousins and many friends who will dearly miss her. She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Ethel Asleson as well as many aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 15, 2015, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Todd Portinga, Associate in Ministry, officiating. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday December 14 at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Obituary for Amy Eunice Chamberlin

Amy Eunice Chamberlin, 53, of Austin, died on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at her home.

Amy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 7, 1962 to Ann Bridgid (Fitzgerald) Wenigar. She moved with her mother to California and then to Austin when she was 15. Amy attended Pacelli High School then transferred and graduated from Austin High School. Amy met her life-long partner, Fred Hemann, when she was 18. She raised her family and worked for Mower County Transit for over 12 years.

Amy loved fishing, camping, attending demo derbys and craft work like sewing. She loved being around family and always had a smile on her face. Amy always wanted people around her to be happy.

Amy is survived by her life partner Fred Hemann of Austin; children, Alfred Hemann of Austin, and Heidi (Tony) Jensen of Blooming Prairie; siblings, Patrick (Sylvia) Whitcomb of Faribault, Beth Wilson of California, Sue Petty of Arizona, Mike Chamberlin of Austin, Jacky (Cecil) Hatfield of Austin, Melissa Haroldson of Austin; along with many nieces and nephews.

Amy is preceded in death by her mother, brother David Chamberlin and sister, Deborah Harris.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Fr. Raul Silva officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church only. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Marilyn E. (Sorose) Van Grevenhof

1923-2015

Marilyn E. Van Grevenhof, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at the Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester, Minnesota.

Marilyn Van Grevenhof was born September 8, 1923, in Astoria, Oregon, to Odin and Ester (Maarstad) Sorose. Her family moved to the Osage, Iowa, area when she was a small child. She graduated from Osage High School and continued her college education at Hamilton College in Mason City, Iowa. With her beautiful voice she was always called upon to sing for special occasions. After finishing her education, Marilyn moved to Austin, Minnesota, where she worked in the Hormel business office. She met Clarence Van Grevenhof who also worked at the Hormel and they were married in September 12, 1953. With her love of singing she joined Sweet Adeline's.

She enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, sewing and singing. Clarence and Marilyn loved to travel in their Airstream after they retired. They lived in Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. When deciding to put down roots again, they moved back to Rochester, Minnesota. She became an active member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and the Rachel circle. Marilyn was a member of the Rochester Senior Center and she loved to sew crafts for the gift shop. She was an active member of the “Young at Hearts” singing group. She developed an interest for genealogy and began researching her family history.

Marilyn is survived by her step-sons: Vernon (Gerry) Van Grevenhof of Londonderry, New Hampshire, Del (Priscilla) Van Grevenhof of Rochester, Minnesota; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.

A small family graveside service will be held at the Oakwood Cemetery at 11 a.m., on Monday, December 14, 2015. Memorials are preferred to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or Mayo Clinic Hospice. Mahn Family Funeral Home -- Rochester Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Angelo Enoch "Buzz" Crandall

Angelo Enoch "Buzz" Crandall, age 94, of Austin, Minnesota died on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at his home in The Cedars of Austin.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 18th at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 1001 Oakland Ave. E, with Father Raul Silva officiating. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary 209 2nd Avenue NW Austin, on Thursday, December 17th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and at the Church for one hour prior to services on Friday.

Buzz was born in 1921 to Enoch Angelo and Jessie Pearl (Yaw) Crandall in Faribault, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Frances Kramer on May 9, 1944. Together, they raised two sons (David and Duane “Jake”) and a daughter (Carol). With experience he gained cooking in the Army, Buzz first worked as a cook at a restaurant on the east side of Austin. Later he became a plasterer and eventually owned his own business, Crandall and Cambern Plastering with Dale Cambern of Austin. The firm plastered many homes in the area as well as businesses, schools, hospitals and churches in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

After he and Dale closed their business, Buzz worked at the Wilson Meat Packing Plant in Albert Lea until retirement. Buzz was a bowler, golfer, fisherman, and a lifelong deer hunter, bagging his last deer in his 90s. He enjoyed his large vegetable garden each year and canning and freezing the bounty with Fran. He also loved dancing; he and Fran took up square dancing in retirement and he seldom could sit out a single dance.

He is survived by three children, David (Mary) Crandall of Austin, Carol (Jim) LeDuc of St. Paul, and Duane "Jake" (Angel) of Sunfish Lake; six grandchildren, Angie Crandall (Sean McGuire), Adam Crandall (Katie Giedt), Nicole LeDuc Meehan (John), Claire LeDuc Ruud (Derek), Allison Crandall Burke (John), and Sarah Crandall; and six great-grandchildren, Kieran, Darby, Beatrice, Benjamin, Lucas, and Murray.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his beloved wife of 67 years, Frances; two brothers, Charles and Frank Crandall; and five sisters, Blanche Dienst, Fern Thompson, Ruth Kern, Jessie Lampert and Pearl Crandall.

Burial with full military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Austin.

Memorials preferred to Pacelli High School or donor’s choice.

The family is deeply appreciative of the care and comfort given to him by Cedars staff and his nurse Nancy Johnson.

Glenn Melvin Brandt, 92

Glenn Melvin Brandt, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, December 14, 2015, at his home at The Cedars of Austin.

Glenn was born April 27, 1923, in Austin, Minnesota, to Michael and Edna (Priem) Brandt. He graduated from Austin High School in 1941. Glenn married Loriene Hanson in Austin on Nov. 8, 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Company until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Austin Post No. 91 American Legion, Olaf B. Damm Post No. 1216 VFW. He served as secretary for the Cedar Valley Conservation Club where he was a member for over 50 years. Glenn enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing and spending time with his family. In 1950, he started deer hunting in Yucatan, Minnesota, and continued hunting until he was 90 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Steven Brandt; and sister Virginia Myhre.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Loriene Brandt, Austin, Minnesota; children: Patricia (Fred) Ekrem, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Glenda Brandt, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Brian Brandt, Austin, Minnesota, Lynette (Mike) Bartesch, Austin, Minnesota; six grandchildren: David (Maggie) Ekrem, Daniel (Lisa) Ekrem, Joanna Ekrem, Janelle (David) Lewison, Andrea (Chris) Brown, Katy (Brandon) Parr; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Robert Myhre, Bella Vista, Arkansas; sister-in-law: Peg Johnson, Tulsa, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Organist will be Becky Bissen and soloist will be Sarah Lysne. Interment will be at Cedar City Cemetery with Austin Post No. 91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Lawrence Eldred Mayzlik

1948-2015

Lawrence E. Mayzlik, age 67, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, December 12, 2015 at his home.

He was born April 7, 1948 in Austin, Minnesota to Eldred and Donna (Carlson) Mayzlik. Lawrence grew up in Austin. He lived in Faribault and Rochester for a time before moving back to Austin in 1980. He worked at Cedar Valley Services for many years. Lawrence had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, dining out, and spending time with his two great-nieces.

Survivors include his father Eldred Mayzlik of Austin, Minnesota; his sisters Marilyn (Brian) Larson of Dover, Delaware, Janice (Stan) Frank of Medford, Minnesota; his brother James Mayzlik of Molalla, Oregon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Donna Mayzlik and his brother David.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Rev. Dr. Stephen DeFor officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Please direct memorials to the family of Lawrence Mayzlik.

Florence Leone (Bray) Maloney

1924-2015

Florence L. Maloney, age 91 of Austin, Minnesota died Sunday, December 13, 2015 at her home.

Florence Leone Bray was born August 13, 1924 in Rochester, Minnesota, to John and Clara (Hanenberger) Bray. She attended school in Austin and worked at the Rose Room as a waitress, and later at the Woolworth's lunch counter -- she was the "Hoagie Lady." On December 31, 1940, Florence married Gerald "Jerry" Maloney in Osage, Iowa. The couple raised two daughters, Patricia and Colleen. A member of Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church, Florence became a charter member of Fellowship Methodist Church, returning to First Methodist after Fellowship closed. In her leisure time, she enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards and doing puzzles. Florence once had a hole-in-one at Ramsey Golf Club. She and Jerry enjoyed square dancing for several years; Jerry was a caller and Florence helped teach others. At one time, at Colleen's request, they invited the neighbor kids to their basement to learn square dancing.

Florence is survived by her daughters Patricia Schaefer (Allen Horning) of Austin, Colleen (Malcolm) Prinzing of Albert Lea; her sister Marlys Farris and step-sister Rochelle Jensen, both of Austin; her grandchildren Susan Hartson of Austin, Lee Hartson of Cannon Falls, Neal Hartson of Austin, Lisa (Wayne) Thompson of Albert Lea, Tanya (Scott) Hemmingson of Alden; 11 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and her dog Abbey, which she called "Poopsie."

She was preceded in death by her parents John Bray and Clara Haugland, step-father Andrew Haugland, her husband Gerald Maloney in 1995, her son-in-law Benno Schaefer, her brothers Beryl Bray and Robert (Mina) Bray, step-brothers Donald, Albert, Floyd and Sherman Haugland, step-sister Janice Duncan, and her companion of several years Milton Stout.

The Maloney family is eternally grateful for the loving care that Florence received from her caregivers, including Nancy Crosby, Carol Quam, Carol Hanf, Teresa Bailey, Tammy Flicek, Janell Jacobs, and especially her granddaughter Susan Hartson.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Austin with Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.

Peter John Kahl

1951-2015

Peter J. Kahl, 64, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, passed away Monday, December 14, 2015, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

Peter John Kahl was born July 29, 1951, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, to Darrell and Eugena (Weseman) Kahl. He was a 1969 graduate from Grand Meadow High School. After high school, Peter attended one year at Rochester Community College. He then served as an electrical apprentice. On Aug. 22, 1970, Peter was united in marriage to Jane Lindelien at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church in Frankford Township, Minnesota. Peter worked at Swanson Lumber Yard in Grand Meadow, Minnesota Truss, Foster Electric and Andrea in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as an electrician, Federal Medical Center in the prison electrical shop, and Mayo Clinic as the Faculty Construction Manager. He also owned and operated the Feed Mill in Grand Meadow. Peter wrote books of poetry, "Another Man's Face" and "Amanda's Story," which was printed in the local paper. Peter spent many summer nights in the cabin he helped build in the woods for his sons. He always had a giving heart.

Peter is survived by Jane of Racine, Minnesota; daughter, Patricia (Paul) Pladsen of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; sons: James of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Nicholas of Racine, Minnesota; grandchildren: Aidan, Avery, and Wyatt; mother, Eugena Kahl-Bush of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; and brother, Michael (Cathy) Kahl of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Patrick Christopher; father, Darrell; and sister-in-law, Norma Kahl.

Funeral services for Peter Kahl will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at Bear Creek Lutheran Church in Frankford Township, Minnesota, with Pastor Larry Iverson officiating. Christine Doris

1922-2015

Christine Doris Handrahan, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died of natural causes on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Christine was born on September 30, 1922, in Saginaw, Michigan, to August Johlke and Augusta Boethke.

She was the fifth of six children and grew up working on her parent's farm. Her early years were hard but she prevailed with a fierce determination she exhibited her entire life. Christine loved her family. She loved to garden and to paint. She made some of the best pickles known to man and her paintings show the work of someone with a wonderful eye for color, composition and symmetry.

She was also an expert at needlework and was an awesome cook. Later on in life, she was able to fulfill her dream to travel on a pilgrimage to Israel and was later able to travel extensively throughout the United States. Christine also enjoyed her time with her friends in the Golden Girls Club, making many trips with them to plays and shows in Minneapolis. She was a woman of strong faith and a very kind and gentle person. She did volunteer work, home health care and was a senior companion. Christine was blessed to live on her own until a few short weeks before her passing. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Robert F. Hambright, Walter H. VanRyn and James E. Handrahan; and by a daughter Donna Hambright Huinker.

She is survived by her children: Aloma (Hambright) Wilde, Robert (Pat) Hambright, Richard VanRyn, Joseph (Annabelle Wagner) VanRyn, Marion (Al) VanRyn Koss, Margaret (VanRyn) Svien; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father James Steffes officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

James "Jim" H. Hopp

1946-2015

Friday, December 18, 2015 at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow, Minnesota and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

James "Jim" Hopp, age 69, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota passed away Sunday, December 13, 2015 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

James H. Hopp was born August 29, 1946 to Herbert and Ruby (Pagel) Hopp in New Ulm, Minnesota. He was baptized on September 15, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he was also confirmed. After high school, he attended college at Mankato State and graduated in 1968 with a degree in teaching. On December 17, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Pam Ohland in Gibbon, Minnesota, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He accepted his first teaching position in Grand Meadow, Minnesota, where he served the school district for 40 years as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director, Dean of Students, and Transportation Director.

He also served many terms on the church council. As a teacher, Jim spent his life guiding his family. His summers were spent painting barns and houses in the area. Jim’s true joy in life was his family. He was proud of all his children and grandchildren and traveled many miles to watch their activities or take care of them. Hours were spent pheasant hunting, fishing, cooking, and playing Cribbage. He strived to be fair toall and had a unique sense of humor. Jim will be missed but will live on in those closest to him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Pam of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; children, Chris (Christina) Hopp of Elkader, Iowa, Sarah (Matt) Reiland of Spring Valley, Minnesota, and Jen (Nate) Graham of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Isaiah Hopp, Elijah Hopp, Anika Reiland, Zach Reiland, and Greta Graham; one step grandchild, Bill Carda; siblings, Larry (Shirley) Hopp of Gibbon, Minnesota, Vickie (Terry) Carter of St. James, Minnesota, and Kim Paa of New Ulm, Minnesota; mother-in-law, Mae Ohland of Ham Lake, Minnesota; sisters and brother-in-law, Cheryl (Randy) Herschman of Ham Lake, Minnesota, Janet (Gary) Scharfencamp of Franklin, Minnesota, and Bruce (Shari) Ohland of Stillwater, Minnesota; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Margaret Jacobson, age 94, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at the Grand Meadow Healthcare Center in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

Margaret Christina Jacobson was born August 31, 1921 to Solmon and Marie (Feuerhak) Jacobson in Austin, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm near Austin. In 1941, Margaret graduated from the Austin High School. After graduation she joined the U.S. Navy was part of WAVES, which is Women Accepted for Volunteer Service. She served 18 months during World War II on a base outside of Washington, D.C. where she did secretarial work at various offices. After World War II was over and the Korean Crisis started, Margaret was a year too old to rejoin the U.S. Navy so she joined the U.S. Marines, where she served 3.5 years. When she returned home after the war, she held various secretarial jobs and took care of her parents.

She was a member of the Zumbro Lutheran Church for many years until moving to the Meadows Assisted Living in 2012 and also a member of Paws and Claws. She enjoyed going to movies, going on long walks, playing solitaire, and doing the daily crossword puzzles. Margaret enjoyed her peaceful life at the assisted living center with good company, fine foods, Bible study, church, and Bingo.

Margaret is survived by her special friends, Lisa and Bradley Whelan of Grand Meadow, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Solmon and Marie and beloved brother, Ralph Edward Jacobson. Condolences may be left online at www.hindtfuneralhomes.com

Percy Withey, age 81, of LeRoy, Minnesota passed away Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, Minnesota.

Percy Lee Withey was born February 24, 1934 to Marvin Sparks and Mildred Pierson in Sioux City, Iowa. He was later adopted by Alvah Withey. Percy attended school through the 10th grade in Kaneville, Illinois. After school he joined the United States Navy on March 8, 1954. He served on the USS Midway.

On September 5, 1956, Percy was united in marriage to Selma L. Hanner in Kaneville, and they settled on a farm. Together they had one daughter, Cindy. Percy, Selma, and Cindy moved to Tucson, AZ where Percy worked in real estate. They moved back to Minnesota to a farm, where Percy retired. Percy enjoyed spending time with family and friends, woodworking, the outdoors, and being with his cats. He loved listening to country music, his favorites being Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, and Johnny Cash, living and hiking in Arizona, watching Westerns on TV, eating, especially Mexican cuisine and Mr. Pizza, and proudly sharing his military experiences.

Percy is survived by his wife, Selma of Mabel, Minnesota; daughter, Cindy (Morey) Bandel of LeRoy, Minnesota; three half-brothers, Mark Withey of LeRoy, Minnesota, Alvah (Sue) Withey Jr. of Illinois, and Dave (Margie) Sparks of Florida and Ohio; half-sister, Joy (Bob) Raczka of Des Plaines, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred, adoptive father, Alvah, father, Marvin, a half-brother and half-sister, and a nephew.

Jane Sievertsen, age 94, of Chatfield, Minnesota formerly of Grand Meadow, Minnesota passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, Minnesota.

Jane Cora Dalen was born August 29, 1921 in Sargent, Minnesota to Oscar and Stena (Kyllo) Dalen. She attended country school and was a 1941 graduate of the Austin High School in Austin, Minnesota. After high school, Jane worked at Hormel until 1945. On November 18, 1945, Jane was united in marriage to Hermes Sievertsen in Austin. Together they farmed until 1978 when they moved into Grand Meadow. Jane loved to travel throughout the United States, sew, and take care of her family. She was a member of the Mothers Card Club for 50+ years and was also a member of the Circle for Grand Meadow Lutheran Church. In 2006, Jane moved into Meadows Assisted Living in Grand Meadow and since 2012, she was a resident of the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.

Jane is survived by her daughters, Sandra (John) Rehse of Alma, Wisconsin, Linda (Lonny) Berge of Chatfield, Minnesota, and Susan (Jery) Jacobson of Kasson, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Kari Peterson, Neil Peterson, Brent Berge, Renae Keller, Jodi Giesen, and Jeremy Jacobson; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Stena, husband, Hermes in 1980, brother Olgar, sister, Olive, and great grandchildren, Cole and Cash.

Gerald "Jerry" Kerrins

1938-2015

Gerald "Jerry" Kerrins, age 77, a Grand Meadow, Minnesota area farmer for the past 50 years, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2015 peacefully in his sleep at Our House in Austin, Minnesota, where he had resided for the past three years.

Jerry was born February 9, 1938 in Wesley, Iowa to Charles V. and Edna E. (Loebig) Kerrins. He moved to Grand Meadow as a young boy and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1956. He was enlisted in the Marines from 1956 to 1960. He returned to Grand Meadow and began farming with his father.

He married Catherine (Kitty) McGrath in 1964 and to this union three children were born: Chuck (Lori Hanson) of Grand Meadow, Amy (Charles) Roberts of Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Scott (Kim) of Grand Meadow. They later divorced, and he married Louise Hardecopf in 1989. He worked at Mayo Clinic for 22 years and farmed in Grand Meadow until 2011.

Jerry was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus, Adams Council, and St. Finbarr Catholic Church. Jerry loved farming, dancing, eating ice cream, and anything John Deere.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Louise of Austin, Minnesota; his three children; four grandsons; three step-sons, Kim (Vicki) Hardecopf of Dexter, Minnesota, Kevin (Mary) Hardecopf of Adams, Minnesota, and Kelly (Melissa) Hardecopf of Rochester, Minnesota; eight step-grandchildren; two great-step-grandchildren; eight siblings: Bob (Marlene) Kerrins of Palto Alto, CA, Nadine Corsi of Colorado Springs, CO, Marlys (Ben) Ruzicka of Eagan, Minnesota, Kay Kerrins of Los Angeles, CA, Sandra (Bill) Allaire of Wabasha, Minnesota, Connie Kerrins of St. Paul, Minnesota, Copper Slettum of Hampton, Minnesota, Randy Christensen of Hampton, Minnesota, and Dan (Tammy) Kerrins of Aurora, IL; brother-in-law, Ron Lee of Rosemount, Minnesota; the mother of his children, Kitty Kerrins of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna and sister, Virginia Lee.

Richard K. "Dick" Sherman

1934-2015

Dick Sherman, 81, went home Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015.

Dick was born July 2, 1934, to Roy and Ruth (Loebig) Sherman in Wesley, Iowa. He grew up in Austin, Minnesota, and graduated from Pacelli Catholic High School where he and all his brothers loved to play football. After high school he briefly attended St. Johns University, worked the railroad, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army (Korean War, stationed in Virginia). After an honorable discharge, he entered Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, where he majored in history and minored in biology. More importantly, it was in Dubuque where he met his future bride, Martha E. Kolck, who was attending Clarke College there at the time. From there, he was off to his first teaching/coaching post at St. Anthony's High School in Sterling, Colorado. He and Martha married on June 10, 1961. During his summers in Colorado, he was a national park ranger (Rocky Mountain, Glacier and Yellowstone).

In 1965, he joined the Lourdes High School community. He was a natural educator and coach, and knew how to work with young adults, on and off the field. When asked what subject he taught, he would jokingly answer "Discipline." He helped established girls tennis and basketball programs in Minnesota. He coached some talented athletes and did his part to help win a few titles along the way. After he retired, he worked 15 years as the school’s archivist and display manager. He was a humble follower of Jesus Christ and believed in the Catholic educational system. He loved Lourdes.

Dick also loved to travel the U.S., especially national parks and historic sites. He was always planning the next great family trip. Rocky Mountain and Glacier were his favorites. Yet nothing beat the annual Fourth of July trek to Grand Marais with the family. He loved to camp and hike with his kids, take pictures and do slide shows, cross country ski, read the paper on the porch, and work in the yard.

Dick is survived by his wife, Martha; children: Rick (Ale), Beth (friend Kathy) and Mike; step-grandchildren: Adolfo, Moises and Hosanna; bothers: Ike (Juanita), Bill (Diana), Gary (Terryl) and John; adopted sister Vicki.

He is proceeded in death by his parents; and brothers: Teddy and Frank.

We invite you to join us in remembrance and celebration of Dick’s life on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester. There will be a mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Lunch will follow the mass. Dorothy Fisk, age 85, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at the Grand Meadow Healthcare Center in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

Dorothy Arlene Iverson was born April 18, 1930 in Grand Meadow, Minnesota to Adolph and Mabel (Skaren) Iverson. She was a graduate of Grand Meadow. On April 18, 1949, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Fisk at the old Lutheran church in Grand Meadow. Dorothy worked at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota for 15+ years, Grand Meadow Nursing Home as a cook, Grand Meadow School, babysat, ran a paper route, and had many other miscellaneous jobs throughout her life, retiring in 1997. In her free time, Dorothy also enjoyed gardening, dancing, and playing cards.

Dorothy is survived by her siblings, Marcella (Bob) Wiese of St. Cloud, Minnesota, David Iverson of Sturgis, South Dakota, Ronnie (Karen) Iverson of Santa Maria, CA, and Audrey (Fritz) Olson of Stewartville, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Shirley Iverson of Spring Valley, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Mabel, husband, Harold on July 10, 1997, two sisters, and two brothers.

Amy Green, age 91, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at the Grand Meadow Healthcare Center in Grand Meadow.

Amy Ruth Jensen was born December 31, 1923 in Rochester, Minnesota to Chris and Mary (Nelson) Jensen. She attended school in Rochester and graduated in 1944. Amy worked as a nurse’s aide at the Worrall Hospital in Rochester for two years after high school. On June 1, 1947, Amy was united in marriage to Maynard Green at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota. They were married for 62 years. Together they lived on a farm northeast of Grand Meadow, where they farmed with Maynard's father. After five years, they moved into town, and Maynard worked at IBM for 30 years.

Amy belonged to the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church, where she was involved with the Circles and aid and taught Sunday school and Bible School. She was interested in embroidery work and also enjoyed reading magazines, especially Country Women. Amy, along with her husband, were also interested in rocks and jewelry. They went to many rock shows in different states to show and sell their rocks and jewelry. Amy belonged to the Austin Gem and Mineral Club in Austin, Minnesota, where she was secretary for many years. She worked at the nursing home as a volunteer as a Grey Lady.

Amy is survived by her daughters, Judy Green of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, and Joanne Olson of Sun City, Arizona; sister, Lenora “Lee” Jensen of Ellsworth, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Mary; her husband Maynard in 2010; son-in-law, David Olson; three sisters: Connie, Elnor, and Alice; and three brothers: Richard, Nels, and James.

Mayvis Kathleen (Hanna) Speer

1937-2015

Funeral services for Mayvis K. Speer will be held 1:30 Monday November 2, 2015 at the Le Roy Lutheran Church with the Rev Herman Bakker officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 3 – 5 p.m. on Sunday November 1, 2015 at the Hindt Funeral Home in Le Roy and will continue for 1hr prior to the service at the church.

Mayvis Speer, age 78 of Le Roy, Minnesota died Thursday October 29, 2015, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

Mayvis Kathleen Hanna was born on March 21, 1937 in Thompson, Iowa to George and Ida (Brekke) Hanna. She attended kindergarten in Manly, Iowa, and later attended a country school, driving a horse and buggy. She then attended school through the 6th grade in Fertile, Iowa. In 1948 they moved to Adams, Minnesota and then to Le Roy, Minnesota in 1952 where she graduated from High School in 1955. In 1957 she met Kenneth Speer and the two were joined in marriage on July 20, 1958 at the Le Roy Lutheran Church. In 1967 they moved to the family farm where together they have farmed ever since. On April 28th, 1978 their son Kevin was born.

Over the years she worked for Mendleson and Halling "The Egghouse" in Le Roy, was appointed Acting Post Master in Taopi, Minnesota and in 1993 started working for the Treehouse nursery near Chester, Iowa. Over the years Mayvis was active in many clubs and organizations including; The American Legion Post 161 Auxiliary, The Monday Birthday Club and served as a Bennington Twp. election judge . She was a long time member of the Le Roy Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and enjoyed making assorted ceramics, quilts, blankets and scarves. She had a green thumb, loved gardening and adored horses, especially "Tony" and her dog “Shep”. She also loved music and playing cards with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth Speer, and one son, Kevin, both of Le Roy; by two grandchildren, Jaxon and Amelia Speer; one sister, Janice Hepker; two brothers, Marvin (Judy) Hanna and Merle Hanna; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Maynard and his wife Alta Hanna; a sister-in-law, Kathy Hanna; and a brother-in-law, Ken Hepker.

John Vogelsang, age 90, of Dexter, Minnesota passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 at the St. Marks Lutheran Home in Austin, Minnesota.

John Vogelsang was born September 8, 1925 on the west side in rural Dexter, Minnesota, on the family farm to George and Reka (Hofdman) Vogelsang. He attended the Monitor Rural School, and then 3 years at Elkton High School. John served in the United States Army as a Corporal from 1946 to 1947. On May 14, 1949, John was united in marriage to Kathryn Cardinal at the Congregational Church in Grand Meadow, and together they had three daughters, Peggy, Jody, and Connie. John worked at Witte Transportation for 30 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering around, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and spending time with his family. John was a member of the Root River Motorcycle Club.

John is survived by his daughters, Jody Mieska of Lakeland, Florida, and Connie Rabine of Faribault, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Eric (Lynn) Ottman of Chatfield, Minnesota, Jason (Mylene) Ottman of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, Jeremiah (Gina) Mieska of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Zachary (Amber) Mieska of Lakeland, Florida, Rochelle (Josh) Steiger of Stewartville, Minnesota, and Kyle (Erika) Rabine of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, George Vogelsang of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas; and sisters, Margaret Schraefel of Austin, Minnesota, Helen (Ralph) Colberg of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Mary Halvorson of Phoenix, Arizona, and Clara Vasey of Austin, Minnesota.

Shirley B. Temanson, age 87, of Stewartville, Minnesota and formerly of the Spring Valley area passed away Friday, September 11, 2015, at the Stewartville Care Center.

Shirley was born on Nov. 3, 1927 near Pine Island, Minnesota, to Sydney and Beulah (Farrar) Frost. She graduated from Pine Island High School in 1945.

Shirley was employed briefly in Rochester, Minnesota, at St. Marys Hospital. She was married to Roger in 1948, and worked as a loving homemaker and a partner in dairy farming near Spring Valley for over 40 years. They retired to Stewartville in 1995.

Shirley especially enjoyed going out dancing with husband Roger. She also found pleasure in sewing and some of her creations have become family heirlooms.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Roger of Stewartville, Minnesota; children, Marjorie (Calvin) Williams of Madison, Wisconsin, Mary (Thomas) Roe of Brookings, South Dakota, Nancy Temanson of Bloomington, Minnesota, Anita (Michael) Filzen of Olivia, Minnesota, and Randy (Kelly) Temanson of Stratford, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis (William) Gablenz of Little Falls, Minnesota and Patricia Dutcher of Tenstrike, Minnesota; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Frost of Byron, Minnesota.

Graveside services for Alice P. Thorpe will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday August 26, 2015 at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Minnesota with Rev. David Baumgarn officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-6 P.M. on Tuesday August 25, 2015 at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Waseca, Minnesota, with a memorial service being held at 6:00p.m.

Alice P. Thorpe, age 84, of Waseca, Minnesota and formerly of Austin, Minnesota died Sunday at Lake Shore Inn in Waseca where she had resided for approximately nine months.

Alice was born June 26, 1931 in Austin, Minnesota, to Albert and Cora Bell (Dorn) Rubel. She attended and graduated from Austin High School in 1949 and attended college for a short time.

She was united in marriage to Bud Thorp on August 5, 1950, in Austin, Minnesota. Alice was a home maker and worked as a cook for the Old Mill Restaurant in Austin for many years. She was a member of the Senior Center and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waseca she enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting, bingo, and playing pfeffer.

Alice is survived by 10 children; Terry Thorpe of Rochester, Minnesota, Jerry Thorpe of Austin, Minnesota, Barb (Dale) Simpson of Truman, Minnesota, Dave (Sue) Thorpe of Austin, Judy (Tom) Hindt of Waseca, Minnesota, Kirk (Deb) Thorpe of Kasson, Minnesota, Suesanne Thorpe of Rochester, Minnesota, Linda (Penny) Thorpe, of Faribault, Minnesota, Penny (Jerry) Roemhildt of Waseca, Minnesota and Mike Thorpe of Sparta, Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; and one brother, George Rubel of Florida.

Violet I. Fimon, age 92, of Spring Valley died Saturday July 18, 2015, at the Spring Valley Care Center.

She was born July 1, 1923 in Spring Valley Township to Emil and Ida (Seabright) Koball. Violet attended and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1941 and was united in marriage to Lester Fimon on September 23, 1950 in Spring Valley. Together Lester and Violet farmed in the Spring Valley area all their lives. Violet enjoyed fishing and always planted a large garden. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church for many years.

She is survived by two grandchildren, Charles Fimon of Spring Valley and Kimberly Fimon of Stewartville; four great-grandchildren: Marissa, Emma, Aiden and Charlie and one sister, Arlene Kappers of Spring Valley. Violet was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Curtis; and by two brothers, Lawrence and Carl.

Arthur B. Foster, age 60, of Spring Valley, Minnesota passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015 doing what he loved most, fishing at Lake of the Woods.

Arthur was born April 24, 1955 in Adams, Minnesota. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them how to fish. He had a passion for the great outdoors and spent his time hunting, fishing, and camping. Arthur also had a talent for telling stories. There was always a story to be told and laughs to be had when he was around. One of Arthur's biggest passions that he took everywhere he went was his love of music. As always, the louder the better.

Arthur is survived by his three children, Andrew Axel, Arie Lynn, and Ashley Marie; five grandchildren, Morgan Quinn, Brooklyn Hope, Kaden Nicholas, Wyatt Dean, and Tayven Axel; and siblings, Diana Sutton and James Foster.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Felper and Meredith "Tootie" Foster; step father, Frank Foster; and brother, Charlie Foster.

Shirley Leota (Eastman) Bucknell

Burial will take place in the LeRoy Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy, Minnesota and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Shirley Leota Eastman was born April 18, 1929 in Todd County, Minnesota, to Mahlon and Elsie (Shepherd) Eastman. She was the tenth of eleven children and was raised in rural Howard County near McIntire, Iowa, where she attended McIntire High School until 1946. Shirley earned her GED Certificate as a working farm wife and the mother of five sons.

On February 4, 1946 Shirley married Virgil Bucknell in Cresco, Iowa. To this union five sons were born: Bruce, Harlan, Bradley, Craig and Bryon. Together, Virgil and Shirley farmed for forty-five years, forty-two of them on the River Road between LeRoy, Minnesota and Chester, Iowa. Shirley was a farm wife who operated machinery, cared for farm animals, and cooked, laundered, doctored and loved their five sons. Most importantly, she worked alongside the love of her life, Virgil.

Shirley also found time to work outside the home at LeRoy Products Corporation, the Ampride convenience store, and for Howard County, Iowa, as an Advocate for Aging. The LeRoy Saddle Club, the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, bowling and her children and grandchildren's sporting events were passionate pursuits of Shirley's. Her immediate and extended family were a focal point of her life.

Shirley died at Wildwood Grove care facility in LeRoy, Minnesota, Monday May 25, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; her parents; seven brothers; three sisters; and one daughter-in-law, Jeanne Bucknell.

Shirley is survived by five sons: Bruce and wife Linda of Racine, Minnesota, Harlan and wife Pat of Spring Valley, Minnesota, Bradley of Postville, Iowa, Craig and wife Deb of LeRoy, Minnesota, and Bryon of LeRoy, Minnesota; by fourteen grandchildren; by fourteen great-grandchildren; by four great-great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Margie Bucknell, LeRoy, Minnesota and Sharon Eastman Riceville, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Robert P. Orum

1922-2015

March 17, 1922 -- May 21, 2015 (age 93)

Obituary--

Funeral services for Robert P. "Bob" Orum will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday May 26 at the Le Roy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Herman Bakker officiating. Burial will be in the Le Roy Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Monday May 25, at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bob Orum, age 93, of Le Roy died Thursday May 21, at Wildwood Grove Care facility in Le Roy, Minnesota.

He was born March 17, 1922 in Cresco, Iowa to Paul and Grayce (Powers). Bob attended school through the 8th grade and joined the United States Army Air Corp in 1942. He served in the Army Air Corp until 1945. On June 5, 1943, he was united in marriage to June Roesler at the Lutheran Parsonage in Cresco, Iowa and to this union five children were born: Ron, Barb, Gail, Don and Craig.

Bob farmed in the Chester and LeRoy area for many years, he also hauled eggs for Mendelson and Halling out of Le Roy and operated the mill at the Le Roy Co-Op. In 1960 Bob and June purchased the Sweet Shop in Le Roy owning it until the early 1980s.

Bob enjoyed making yard art, collecting license plates and hub caps. He could fix almost anything and enjoyed family drives in the country.

He is survived by his wife June of Le Roy; daughters, Barb (Steve) Milburn of Rochester and Gail (Donovan) Dahlby of Northwood, Iowa; sons, Don (Judy) Orum of LeRoy and Craig Orum of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law Linda Orum of Jacksonville, Florida; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bonnie McFarlane of LeRoy and Eleanor (Bill) Ortman of Emmetsburg, Iowa; and by brothers: Manley (Norma) Orum of Waterloo, Iowa, Don (Betty) Orum of Palm Desert, CA, Earl (Bev) Orum of Walnut Creek, CA, and Dale (Pat) Orum of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ron Orum; a grandson, Todd Timmerman; and by six sisters: Gladys, Doris, Ruth, Norma, Nell and Marie.

Gina Marie (Kempe) Elit

Gina Marie Elit, age 54, of Hanover, Minnesota passed away Friday, May 8th 2015 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy heart disease and multiple organ failure. Gina had received a total artificial heart as a bridge to heart transplant.

Gina Marie Kempe was born October 20, 1960 to Karl and Betty Ann (Moe) Kempe in Austin, Minnesota. She was a 1979 graduate from LeRoy-Ostrander High School. After high school, Gina attended Rochester Area Vocational-Technical Institute and graduated in 1981 with a nursing degree. On September 23, 2000, Gina was united in marriage to Wayne Elit at the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Corcoran, Minnesota.

Gina worked at the Ostrander Nursing Home, Meadow Manor in Grand Meadow, Shamrock Home Health in Austin and in 1995 started at the Monticello Clinic in Monticello Minnesota as a nurse for a pediatrician. Gina worked at the clinic for 17 years.

Gina is survived by her husband, Wayne of Hanover, Minnesota; mother, Betty Ann Kempe of LeRoy, Minnesota; and brother, David Kempe of Owatonna, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her father, Karl; maternal grandparents, Carl and Sigrid Moe; and paternal grandparents, Theodore and Gesina Kempe.

Harold L. Remley, age 87, of Dodge Center, Minnesota passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Harold Laverne Remley was born June 20, 1927, in a farmhouse near Plainfield, Iowa, to Walter "Leland" and Emeline (Youmans) Remley. He was the eighth child of nine children. He attended Kindergarten through the 8th grade at Laffette #3 Country School, which he had to walk 1.5 miles to get to. He then attended Waverly High School for two years, in which he completed the 10th grade. After completing school, he worked on his parent's farm until he married Dorothea Wilke on May 21, 1950. They raised two daughters and later divorced.

Harold worked briefly for John Deere and at a canning factory in Iowa, but farming was in his blood. Harold and Dorothea moved from the Plainfield-Clarkesville area to Stacyville, Iowa in 1958. They farm there for eight years until they moved to Taopi, Minnesota in 1967 for four years. Harold finally bought his first farm by Ostrander, Minnesota in 1971, then bought a hobby farm in 1975 north of Spring Valley, Minnesota, and finally moved to Dodge Center in 1976. When crops didn’t yield enough finances, he took a brief job at Cren-lo in Rochester, Minnesota and then to Pace Dairy, where he worked until he retired. Harold liked working with wood, whether it be cutting a tree down with a chainsaw, making a birdhouse, or building, yet another, playhouse.

Harold and Dorothea rekindled their friendship and became roommates. They traveled together to many place, including a trip to Alaska.

He is survived by his special friend, Dorothea; daughters, Roberta (Jim) Heckerson of Spring Valley, Minnesota and Rosemary (Ed) Hoefs of Hayfield, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Loretta Hoefs, Adam (Jackie Smith) Hoefs, and Tracy (Don) Jenkins; six great-grandchildren: Liz Hoefs, McKenna Swenson, Alyssa Hoefs, Leanne Hoefs, Caitlyn Jenkins, and Melany Jenkins; three step great-grandchildren: Bradley Struckmann, Ean Smith, and Katie Chappuis; one sister, Gertrude Bienemann; and one brother, Marlowe Remley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Emeline; granddaughter, Amanda Hoefs; two brothers, Lloyd and Walter Remley; and by four sisters: Gladys Hughes, Alice Holmes, Anna Hirsh, and Nettie Lebeck.
