Mason Merl Mace

1932-2015

Born: February 29, 1932
Died: October 19, 2015

Mason M. Mace, age 20 (or 83 if you do not go by leap years), formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died, Monday, October 19, 2015 at his home in Ellsworth, Wisconsin.

Mason was born in Austin, Minnesota, on February, 29, 1932 to Mason and Elizabeth (Winn) Mace. Mason attended a one-room schoolhouse and would tell you he trudged uphill both ways and through three foot drifts of snow to get there. He always described Hazel Johnson as the best teacher he ever had, but we are not sure Hazel would describe him as her best student. He was active in 4-H and has a box full of ribbons to show for it. He was very proud of his son Ron's accomplishments in 4-H, and hopefully, in the afterlife, he will get over the fact that he could not convince his daughter Amy to show animals.

He graduated from Austin High School and spent his early adult years farming. He then became a salesman, selling marking guns and labels most recently. Mason married Ramona Christianson in June of 1952 and they were married for 39 years before Ramona's death in 1991. After Ramona's death, Mason had a long-time relationship with Yvonne Wright for more than fifteen years before her death in 2009.

Mason loved life and to spend time visiting or playing cards/games with relatives and friends. Mason was a practical joker and loved to laugh and make others laugh. He would be pleased that he was able to continue working and living independently until his death. He would describe his demise as a "corker." He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mason is survived by his children: Ronald (Kim) Mace, Austin, Minnesota, and Amy (Tim Parlin) Mace, New Brighton, Minnesota; four granddaughters: Melissa (Brett) Hussey, Megan (Brent) Wilde, Elena Parlin, and Vienna Parlin; two great-granddaughters, Charliee Wilde and Hazel Hussey; along with many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 26th at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Scott Roser officiating. Interment will be in the Udolpho Cemetery. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary for one hour before the service on Monday.

Charlotte Carter

c1819-1889

Death of Mrs. John Carter.

On the evening of the 26th, of November in the seventieth year of her life. Charlotte, beloved wife of John Carter fell asleep in this world to waken in that other where there is no more death. Among the earliest settlers of Mower county, Mr. Carter and his wife had known the hardships and privations incidental to frontier life. They had met the sickness and death which sooner or later invade every home circle, but never for one moment had the wife and mother lost the Christian trust and the happy faith which made her character so striking.

The young and joyous loved grandma and found her a faithful ally and friend in all their pleasures. The sorrowing were lifted up out of the slough of despond by her cheerful council. The weak and erring were met by her with the love and sympathy which we all hope for when we are summoned to our judgement. Those two whom life's cares seemed to heavy for their endurance took heart from her bright words and brave example and tried again. The old and helpless forgot that they were aged and grew strong again when talking with "Grandma."

How many hearts have been uplifted, how many lives made better how many souls saved, by this one strong, sweet life! As the sweet voices of some of the young folks she loved sang softly one of the old hymns which was a favorite with her, "Going Home to Die No More," one could not wish her recalled from that beautiful new home where the rich fruit of her Christian life shall ripen through eternity.

Leon Orlando Wilder

News reached here Sunday of the death of Leon Wilder who has been in a St. Paul hospital for the past few weeks. His sister from Washington was telegraphed but arrived a few hours after he had passed away. Leon was a young man just ready to start out on life's way. A young man who looked the picture of health but a few months ago. It seems sad that he should be cut off so early in life.

Leon Orlando Wilder, son of Shedric and Kate Wilder, was born in Lyle township April 10, 1882, and died at St. Luke's hospital, St. Paul, October 4, 1902, aged 20 years, five months and 25 days. He has always lived with his parents. The cause of his death was blood poisoning resulting from an operation undergone at the hospital.

He was a good steady heard working boy and was a great comfort to his parents. He has two sisters and one brother. The older sister lives at Wiser, Washington, and the other brother and sister, aged eight and ten years, live at home here. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. C. D. Seward William
Van Camp

1851-1888

Most of your readers have heard of the death of Van Camp. He and two other men were in the act of replacing the trucks under a car when the support gave way and his head was caught between the axle of the trucks he was moving and the step of the car. The top of his head was completely severed. It was a very sad affair. The afflicted ones have the sympathy of all. His family have returned to their home in Otranto.

What a sad home. No life insurance or pecuniary appropriation from the company can compensate for the loss they have sustained.

Abraham S. Lott

1832-1894

Death of A. S. Lott.

Another of our pioneer settlers has passed over the river. Last Monday evening at 7.30, Abraham S. Lott died at his home in Austin township, aged 62 years. He has been in poor health for the last thirty years but has not been confined to the house except for the past two months. The last time he as off of his place was when he went to vote on election day. He died of heart and stomach trouble.

Mr. Lott was born in Painesville, Ohio, July 7, 1832. He moved with his parents to Missouri in 1846 and soon after to the present site of Des Moines, Iowa, where his father traded with the Indians for several years. In 1850, he joined a party going overland to California, leaving the Missouri river May 8, and reaching Georgtown, California, July 22. He remained four years on the Pacific coast as a miner, returning by way of Panama. He came directly to Evansville, Wisconsin.

In September, 1854 Mr. Lott in company with C. H. Huntington, Moses Rolph and Calvin Powers came to Mower county looking for claims which they have since occupied and returned to Wisconsin.

January 1st 1855, Mr. Lott was married in union township, Wisconsin, to Miss Jane C. Bebee. They started for their new home in Minnesota April 15 arriving here May 6, making the trip overland. They settled on section 27, Mr. Huntington taking the Sweetwater claim on 34. Mr. Lott thus became closely identified with the earliest history of this county. He lived to see the wilderness settled and improved until it has become the habitation of thousands of prosperous settlers and to this result his energy and perseverance aided much.

He was one of the charter members of Fidelity Lodge No. 49, A. F. & A. M. and always took great interest in its affairs. Only two of these charter members (C. H. Huntington and A. Dickerson) now survive.

He leaves a widow and two children, Colbert H. Lott and Mrs. Olive M. Brooks.

Funeral services were held today at one o'clock at the Enterprise school house under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, Rev. C. D. Belden officiating. Interment at Enterprise.

We have been acquainted with the deceased for nearly twenty years. By those who knew him the best he was highly regarded. We tender the bereaved family our sincere sympathy in their time of sorrow.
