Miss Alice M. Cressey

c1857-1875

OBITUARY.

Miss Alice M. Cressey, daughter of Rev. A. and Hannah Cressey, died of cerebretis, in Morristown, Rice county, Minn., on Thursday, 22d inst., in her 19th year. Her remains were brought here and her funeral attended at Cedar City by a large number of relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Rev. C. J. Hays, assisted by Rev. L. Hall.

Alice was born at Cedar City, and when she was seven years old her father entered the traveling ministry of the M. E. Church in this State. She was converted at the age of 12 years, and lived an earnest and beautiful christian, endearing many hearts to her because of her unselfish and benevolent nature, cultured and fashioned after the image of Christ. Her expressed purpose and desire was to live for the glory of God.

The master has called her into the "excellent glory." While engaged in her favorite avocation--teaching school, the fatal disease made its approach, and in two weeks she closed her eyes to earth, to open them in heaven.

"Early, bright, transient, chaste as morning dew,

She sparkled, was exhaled and went to heaven."

She remained with her parents a dutiful daughter and loving sister performing the arduous duties which came to her lot with quiet patience and cheerfulness until the time of her marriage to Joseph Wynn November 1, 1893 after which nearly all the time, she with her husband has lived in Austin, or on their farm near this place. One child has blessed the union Myrtle Emily just past seven years of age.

The influence of her life in the home has always been of a quiet and peaceful character and her happy cheerful disposition will be missed by those whom she has served and cheered in their time of trial and trouble.

Although she has been a sufferer for nearly a year, yet her condition did not seem serious until about four days previous to her death, when she was taken suddenly worse and heart failure hastened the end. All that loving hands and skillful medical attendance could devise was done, yet of no avail for on Thursday morning she was called from a bed of pain to that "peace which passeth all understanding" which peace she so longed for and exemplified in her life.

A devoted husband and little daughter, an aged father and mother, four brothers and five sisters, besides numerous other relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss but may we learn to look forward to a meeting beyond that beautiful river of which she used to so love to sing and talk about.

A short funeral service was held at the home Saturday morning in which Rev. C. D. Belden of Austin spoke on the theme "He comforteth in affliction," the text being found in Psalms 119:50 after which the deceased was taken to the home of her sister Mrs. R. N. Ogden in Mitchell County Iowa, where many of the old friends and neighbors had gathered to pay their last tribute of respect. Here Rev. Wyatt of St. Ansgar conducted the service choosing for his leading through "Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?" giving words of assurance and consolation to those who put their trust in Him who doeth all things for our good. The hymns so beautifully rendered by the choir were favorite hymns of the departed one. She was laid in her final resting place in the Ogden cemetery. No words of ours can comfort in these times of affliction for we can only turn to Him for condolence, who doeth all things well, and who can comfort the soul in need.
