William Joseph Boecker 1943-1955
A coroner's jury was to meet at 1 p.m. today in the death of
12-year-old William Boecker, Lyle farm boy killed in an auto accident
near Austin Saturday night.
Billy died of a brain concussion at 3:05 a.m. Sunday in St. Olaf
Hospital. The car in which he was riding swerved off Highway 105 six
miles south of Austin between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
Gerald D. Burton, 21, of 900 Harmon, was being held on an open charge today
in the county jail. Burton, driver of the car, was arrested Sunday morning
upon being released from St. Olaf, where he was treated for lacerations.
Also hospitalized Saturday night was Ralph Boecker, 10, brother of the
victim. Ralph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Boecker, Lyle Rt. 1 suffered
mouth and chin lacerations. He was released Sunday morning.
Wesley Huffman, 18, 1012 E. Water, was examined and released Saturday
night.
Burton formerly was married to Kathryn, 20 year-old sister of the Boecker
boys. Accompanied by Ralph, Billy and Huffman, he had left the Boecker farm
a mile and one-half west of Lyle about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to bring Huffman
home to Austin.
Tire marks on the highway indicated the car began to skid at a curve
near the Austin Ready Mix Gravel pit, crossing over into the southbound
lane just before it careened into the bushes and thickets along the banks
of the Cedar River. The car crashed through underbrush, hacking off a branch
six inches thick about eight feet from the ground, and landed on its side.
All four passengers were thrown out. Ralph Boecker and Huffman landing in
the shallow waters of the river.
Ambulance crews found Billy and Burton lying about two feet from the
river bank. Ralph had climbed up the eight-foot bank. Huffman was found
sitting in a car which had stopped on the highway.
Billy Boecker was the only unconscious passenger. In addition to his head
injury, the boy suffered a compound fracture of his leg and a fracture of
the right thigh. The bones of his left leg were poking through the skin
when the ambulance crew arrived a few minutes after 6 p.m.
Reinartz said the car had begun to leave the road 210 feet south of
the spot where it landed. Burton later told the sheriff that "someone
was crowding me off the road." Burton told the sheriff that he had brought
Mrs. Boecker home about 3 p.m. from Austin.
The 1949 car was demolished. Mud clung to the grill and top; the
windshield was shattered, the drive shaft bent, three tires were flat,
and two tire rims were bent.
As Ralph was being carried into the ambulance Saturday, he inquired
about their month old puppy, Lightning, which he was riding in the car. An
hour later the dog was found about a foot from the river bank with a broken
leg and part of its tail severed. The pup was taken to Austin and will be
returned to the Boecker home.
Survivors, in addition to Billy's parents are five sisters and four
brothers: Kathryn, John, 16; Theresa, 15; Gloria, 14; Ralph; Sylvia, 9;
Mary, 7; Russell, 5, and Gerald, 2 1/2 months.
Funeral services will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home
and at 9 a.m. at St. Augustine Church. Interment will be at the Catholic
Cemetery.

Robert Dean Knauer 1927-2015
Robert Dean Knauer, age 88, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on
Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the home of his son, Tony (Linda), in Rochester,
Minnesota.
Robert had lived with his son for the last five years. Robert was born
April 29, 1927, to Joseph and Grace (Capretz) Knauer in Austin, Minnesota.
He was the eldest of two sons. As a child he grew up in one of the first
houses in Austin located next to Knauer's Market in downtown Austin. At
age 16 he entered the United States Merchant Marine, attending basic
training at Sheepshead Bay, New York. He served on ships in both the
Atlantic and Pacific. He was honorably discharged by the US Coast Guard
in August of 1945.
Upon returning to Austin he was provided a diploma from Columbus High
School (later known as Pacelli). He also served in the Minnesota National
Guard Company H, 135th Infantry Regiment from which he was honorably
discharged in 1949.
In 1950, he married Dorothy Battey. They resided in Austin and later
moved to Rochester. Due to his father's health he returned to Austin to
manage and later own Knauer's Meat Market. He represented the third
generation of the Knauer family to operate the meat market which has been
in operation in Austin for over a century. In his early years he was also
very involved with motor racing in southern Minnesota, building and owning
racecars. He was also owner of Discount Car Sales for over 50 years and
collected vintage cars.
He loved art and music, especially big band and jazz. He got to express
his art with window and sign painting in the meat market. His passion was
operating the meat market and the art of meat cutting. He took great pride
in stocking a good-looking meat counter and having satisfied customers,
serving generations of the same families.
Robert trained many young apprentice meat-cutters who went on to work
in the industry. He considered the store as the last small independent
meat/grocery store in Mower County surviving the growth of corporate
chain stores.
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest." Matthew 11:28. Robert passed in peace, knowing the Lord's

Kathryn Eileen Holbert 1938-2015
"Where shall we see a better daughter, or a kinder sister, or a
truer friend?" -- Jane Austen
Kathryn Eileen Holbert, 76, born July 21, 1938, in Austin, Minnesota,
died April 21, 2015, in Davis, California.
Kay was much loved and will be sorely missed by her siblings: Terri
(Jerry) Cloutier, Mary (George, Jim) Upcraft-Miller, Judith (Ted) Heimer, Jim
Holbert, Rich (Linda) Holbert; and her nieces and nephews, whom she adored.
Kay was an unselfish, loving, generous person. She was understanding,
forgiving, honest, warm, stubborn and hilarious. She lived in Minnesota,
Montana and California. Her funny tales were often told at family gatherings
out on her big porch in the Old North Davis neighborhood. Kay was young at
heart and loved music, reading, playing cards and games.
We are forever grateful for the priceless memories of all goofy "Kay
Classics." She was genuine, patient, appreciative and humble.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eileen and "Lefty" Holbert;
and her sister Pat Holbert. Kay was an “Other Mother” and best friend to
her youngest sister Terri and Terri’s son, Devin Holbert.
Rest in peace, dear, precious, unforgettable Kay.
