Calvin Curtis Overby 1933-2014
Calvin "Cal" Curtis Overby, 81, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Our House Memory Care in Austin.
Cal was born on June 4, 1933, to Arnold M. and Mary E. (Hughes) Overby, in Amherst Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. His mother passed away in 1943, and he then lived with his Aunt and Uncle, Elmer and Martha (Overby) Brown in Mabel, Minnesota. He attended rural grade schools in that area.
When he was in seventh grade, his father took a job at Hormel, so then he moved to Austin to live with his father and step-mother, Lila Overby. He graduated from Austin High School in June 1951. He began working for Geo. A. Hormel & Co., in the office, on Dec. 3, 1951.
In February 1953, he volunteered for the Draft, and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, until February of 1955. After his honorable discharge, he returned home, and went back to work at Geo. A. Hormel & Co., and worked in several different departments for 33 years, including invoice, cost accounting, payroll, quality control, foreman of gelatin, and also filled in as temporary foreman in the cafeteria and livestock. He also took some of Hormel Company’s customers on private tours of the plant. He retired from Hormel on Aug. 31, 1984.
On May 11, 1957, he married Dolores Walz, daughter of Albert and Martha Walz, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. He and Dolores had two children, Thomas “Tom” and Kathy. Cal was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church for many years, and loved going to church.
Cal was a very sports-minded person, in personal participation, going to
games and coaching youngsters. He assisted coaching Little League baseball
teams, and YMCA flag football teams. He was a very loyal fan of the Austin
High School teams in baseball, football and basketball, and followed their
games both at home and away.
He also became actively involved with the
Austin Athletic Association for several years. He coached boys' travelers'
basketball teams for several years, and some of the boys who went to the
Minnesota State Basketball Tournament two years in a row, were boys he
had on this travelers’ team. He followed three of those boys, in going
to several of their games, when they played for college teams. As a sports
lover, his favorite was basketball. Cal played on City League teams, and
was also a member of the YMCA, where he played “noon” basketball for
several years, and also worked out regularly with weight-lifting. He also
played men’s touch football, broomball hockey, fast-pitch baseball, and
slow-pitch softball. He played softball until he was well into his 50's.
Even after having hip-replacement surgery, he played basketball at the
YMCA until he was in his 60’s.
Cal was also a fan of the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Gopher football and basketball teams.
After his Hormel retirement, he took a part-time job at K-Mart in their new store, on Oct. 14, 1991, working as a greeter, and later also delivered prescriptions. He retired from K-Mart in 2006.
Cal also worked as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for several years with their Daffodil Days promotion. For a couple of those years, he recruited some of the AHS basketball teams boys and cheerleaders to help with selling Daffodils, and for many years he conducted neighborhood collections for the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.
Cal was a very social person, and liked to be where the action was. Also, he loved to help anyone and/or everyone. If anyone ever needed help, he would be the first to volunteer. He had so many wonderful memories of the years he worked with coaching youngsters, and the relationships that came from those years.
He also loved little kids and babies, always doing things to make them smile. Cal dearly loved everyone in his family and considered everyone in the Walz family not only as family, but his very best friends.
Cal is survived by his wife Dolores of Austin; son, Tom (Lucinda Williams) Overby of Studio City, California; daughter, Kathy (Don) Jensen of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; grandchildren: Daniel Olson, Kate (Peter) Vann and Kristine (Jake) Whitsitt; great-grandchildren: Gavin, Maddie and Kaylen Whitsitt, Olan, Blake and Kylie Vann; sisters: Elaine Chihak of Austin, Lisa (Brian) Zipse of Montgomery, Minnesota; step-mother, Lila Overby of Montgomery, Minnesota.

John VanEpps 1955-2014
John VanEpps, 58
John VanEpps passed away at age 58 after a three-year, courageous battle with cancer, on June 27, 2014, at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada.
John was born on Nov. 29, 1955, in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated in 1974 from Austin High School in Minnesota. Soon after graduation he got married, started a family, and joined the U.S. Navy. Most of his time in the service was spent in the Philippines. While in the Navy, he proudly became the father of a boy (Dan) and a girl (Shelley), later two more boys were born (Paul and Steven).
In 1985 John moved to Juneau and began working for Alaska Airlines as a ramp service agent, eventually training as a departure coordinator. His career at Alaska Airlines spanned 27 years. John was a strong, hard worker, and at times a “work hard, play hard” sort of guy. John easily made friends and was known for his unbeatable sense of humor. He enjoyed telling and playing jokes on friends and family as much as possible, bringing them endless smiles and laughter.
In 1987 John met Diane, they fell in love, were married and spent 26 wonderful years together. They lived most of their married life in Juneau and had recently moved to Las Vegas in 2012 after retiring from their jobs.
John enjoyed fishing on his boat "The Cod Father" (too bad
Diane always caught the bigger fish!) and with friends and family anywhere
from Alaska to Minnesota to Mexico. John was a huge football fan,
"Go Minnesota Vikings." He was also a huge fan of Rock ‘n
Roll and liked to play it loud. He once broke his foot getting into the
music and dancing a bit too wildly on his birthday. When not watching
football and sports, his interests were in cars, science, history,
cooking, animals, or The Weather Channel (a favorite). Of course, they
all go with pizza.
John was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who looked out
for the best interest of his family, giving them numerous fun times
together and encouraging advice and support when needed. He had the
ability to see the good in difficult situations and was a caring,
generous man with a tender soul. He had a big heart for humanity and
especially loved animals. John was often seen in his yard or walking
the neighborhood with one of his beloved kitties.
At the end of this journey and the beginning of his next, John was
surrounded by his loving family that comforted him, a caring staff of
doctors and nurses that showed great sensitivity to his needs, and many
prayers from those who knew him. We will all miss him terribly but the
memories of the good times we shared with him will warm our hearts forever.
John is survived by his mother Audrey Halsey; wife Diane; children:
Daniel VanEpps, Paul (Kristina) VanEpps, Steven VanEpps, Shelly VanEpps;
grandson Graedan VanEpps; granddaughters: Kaylin Parfitt, Kiana Parfitt;
sister Debra (Guy) Wentzel; niece Jenny Winkels; nephews: Jeremy Winkels,
Michael Winkels, Anthony Wentzel; great niece Amanda Winkels; great nephew,
Noah Winkels; and numerous other family and friends that are dear to him.
He was preceded in death by his father John Glenwood VanEpps; and
grandson Trey VanEpps.
A celebration of life was held on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at the
Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure.

Jillian Louise Flink 1989-2014
Jillian Louise Flink, 25, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, December 14, 2014, in Fridley, Minnesota.
She was born June 3, 1989, in Austin, Minnesota, to Jerry and Sunnee (Johnson) Flink. Jillian was proud and pleased to be from Austin. From an early age she took advantage of all the city of Austin had to offer. Before she was a week old, she had attended fifth-grade graduation, a Girl Scout Brownie fly-up ceremony, a 4-H softball game, and several rummage sales. As a preschooler, she loved attending Apple Lane’s Montessori program.
As a child, Jillian eagerly looked forward to third-grade when she could become an official 4-H’er. She contributed to making the meetings fun and enjoyed her camp opportunities. Jillian found it important to be not just a spectator, but an active participant in helping make the Mower County Fair one of the best in the state. She especially enjoyed participating in the dog, pet, indoor garden, and rabbit projects, often garnering champion awards at both the county and state levels. She continued to be a 4H member until she graduated from the program, and then volunteered her time as a leader and rabbit project bowl coach. Jillian had a special talent with rabbits. She was on the rabbit judging team and was a member of the 4-H rabbit quiz bowl team for 13 years, serving as captain and often earning top honors at the district and state levels.
She bred champion Holland Lops and participated in showmanship contests at rabbit shows throughout the tri-state region, earning the coveted Best in Show and Premiere Display honors at the 2011 Minnesota State Fair. Jillian sold quality rabbits to 4-H’ers and could often be found at shows helping others choose stock to improve their herds. She was a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association, the Minnesota State Rabbit Breeders Association, and the Cedar River Rabbit Club, receiving the title MSRBA Princess twice in grade school, and two academic scholarships from CRRC.
Jillian advocated for all animals, volunteering at the Mower County Humane Society while in junior high. Over the years, she learned to swim like a porpoise at the YMCA; sail down the slide at the municipal pool; utilize area parks, waterways, and trails; and play in park and recreation sports. Jillian’s other activities as a youth included participating in camps and activities at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, attending plays and concerts, and marching in many parades. As a drummer and musician, Jillian participated in various musical groups, including bands, orchestras, choirs and bell choirs. She studied piano and music theory for 14 years and enjoyed the many programs, activities and borrowing opportunities at the Austin Public Library.
Jillian was grateful for the wonderful education she received from Austin Public Schools, especially after she had left town and realized not everyone had been so fortunate. She appreciated the clean, well-maintained facilities, extensive curriculum, fun Kid’s Korner program, science and math camps, and extra-curricular activities available to students. There were many dedicated staff members with whom Jillian maintained a positive relationship. Her passion was band and orchestra, especially the percussion section. She especially enjoyed playing the quad drum set at pep fests, games, and parades. Jillian felt it was her job to drum “Packer Pride” into the crowd. She was humbled by and grateful for the generous scholarships she received, especially the Horatio Alger Award.
Jillian had several collections, including zebras, Fenton glass, global art, drums, and tie-dyed T-shirts. Although she felt welcome in all faith communities, Jillian was a baptized and confirmed member of First United Methodist Church, as were five generations before her. She was active in Sunday school and vacation Bible school, participating in several programs and youth groups at many area churches. She was a member of the musical praise team and looked forward to Bible camp each summer. Jillian also was active as a volunteer in mission, participating in local, regional, national and global missions. She had a special affinity for the people of Haiti and was eagerly anticipating a third visit this spring. Jillian loved to travel, near and far, long or short, alone or with others.
She attended Hamline University in St. Paul and was expecting to complete her degree in social work at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, where she was currently enrolled. Her hope was to pursue a master’s degree in environmental social work. Jillian was employed full time during much of her matriculation at Metro State, working as a special education assistant at Learning for Leadership Charter School in Minneapolis and at Dependable Home Health Care as a direct support professional. She was very devoted to her students and clients and was always trying to come up with new outings and activities to enhance their education and enrich their lives. Jillian was very inclusive, enjoying friendships with diverse people based on their personal merit. John Wesley said, “The world is my parish.” For Jillian, the world was her friend.
Jillian is survived by her parents, Jerry and Sunnee Flink, of Austin; her sisters: Julene Flink of St. Paul, and Krista (Troy) Heinz of Mount Sterling, Wisconsin; her grandfather Clestine Johnson of Austin; nephews Tyler and Tanner; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Mildred Johnson; her paternal grandparents: John and Shirley Flink; her great-grandparents Holger and Blanche Flink, Walter and Dorothy Klingfus, Joseph and Frances Kraft, Harvey and Bernice Johnson; her uncle, Mark Johnson; and special great-aunt, LaDonna Johnson.
