Donald Eldon Mattice 1925-2014
Donald Eldon Mattice, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully
on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester
surrounded by members of his immediate family at his bedside.
Don was born February 11, 1925, to Christine and Albert Mattice
in Minneapolis. He was the last to join the family, which included
four siblings, Richard, Alberta, Laurie and Helen. The family weathered
the depression better than most, as Don's father was one of the few to
have a stable job as a conductor with the Milwaukee Railroad. The family
moved from Minneapolis to Mankato and then relocated to Austin. Don
graduated in 1942 from Austin High School at the age of 17. With World War
II raging, Don wanted to serve his country, so like many others during
that time, he lied about his age and enlisted in the Army. Following
basic training he was sent to the Pacific Theater where he served in
New Guinea, the Philippines, and finally as part of General MacArthur's
occupying force in Japan following the Japanese surrender.
After serving several years in the Pacific and prior to a state-side
military assignment, Don was on leave in Austin when he met his future
wife Lee (Leona). After a whirl-wind two week romance, they got married
on March 1, 1946, by a Justice of the Peace in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Don's new bride accompanied him on his final assignment with the Army as
a supply sergeant at a military detention center in Milwaukee, Wis. The
young couple returned to Austin when his commitment with the Army ended.
In 1947, Don and Lee had two life changing experiences. Don started his
life-long career in law enforcement by joining the Austin Police Department
and the couple welcomed their first born, who was named in honor of Don's
eldest brother, Richard, who had previously died from severe injuries
received in an accident. Don rose quickly in rank to captain and then
was appointed inspector, as second in command of the Austin Police
Department. After 24 years serving the people of Austin, he was appointed
Chief of Police in Woodridge, Ill., in the western suburbs of Chicago. The
municipality further tapped his experience and capabilities by promoting
Don to Director of Public Safety, which gave him oversight over the police,
fire, ambulance services and Civil Defense.
After retiring from public service, Don and Lee moved to various parts
of the country to spend time with their children and grandchildren. The
final stop in his work career took them to Los Angeles, where Don worked
for the corporate security department of Hughes Aircraft Company for many
years. After retiring for real this time, they moved to Las Vegas and lived
there for many years. Don and Lee ultimately returned to Austin when their
daughter, Cathy, was diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer. Don spent
his final two years at Adams Nursing Home as a result of a fall which
required hip surgery, from which he never fully regained the ability to walk.
Survivors include the love of his life, Lee; four sons, Richard
(Connie), Craig (Melissa), James (DeDe), and Lynn (Deborah); nine
grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy; his parents; all
four siblings.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2014,
at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Pastor Karen Behling officiating.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
Private interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by
American Legion Post No. 91. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made
in Don's name to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund,
901 E Street NW, Suite 100, Attn: Memorial Fund Office, Washington,
D.C. 20004-2025, or through the Memorial's internet site, www.nleomf.org.

in Hayfield and Lansing, Minnesota, and High School in Mantorville,
Minnesota. He was active in sports, excelling in football and baseball.
In 1944, Cliff moved to Austin, Minn., where he was employed by the

a realtor for 12 years.
Everyone who knew Cliff knew of his love for gardening and lawn work. He
particularly enjoyed starting his garden early, planting the seeds in late
March indoors, giving his home-grown tomato plants to his family and
friends. He was a sports enthusiast, playing golf with friends as often
as possible. For many years Cliff enjoyed hunting pheasants, wild turkey,
deer, ducks and occasionally elk. He also loved to fish.
Cliff was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as trustee

Joseph Keith Price, 47, died peacefully at his home in
Rose Creek, Minn. on Friday, July 4, 2014. Funeral arrangements
are pending with Mayer Funeral Home.

Joseph Keith Price, 47
Joseph Keith Price, 47, born April 1, 1967, the son of Keith and Rosemary (Carey) Price, Rose Creek, passed away at his home on Friday, July 4, 2014, at the 3 o’clock hour. Joseph was chosen to live in a family of five brothers and seven sisters, and more important, he was a child of God knowing that he came from God and that Heaven was his eternal home.
He graduated from Southland High School and received the Rebel Award as the manager of the sports teams. Joseph was a loyal Minnesota Viking fan recalling the outcome of all games, playoffs and super bowls that had occurred throughout his lifetime. Joseph attended daily Mass and was lector and altar server for more than 35 years. Although he traveled extensively throughout the country during his lifetime, he never lived anywhere but Ash Street in Rose Creek, Minn.
Joe was well known throughout the community, and beloved by all. Even though nearly 30 years since high school graduation, he was still an avid supporter of all the Southland teams, attending as many games as his lifestyle would allow.
Joseph was preceded in death by his grandparents Emery and Gladys
Price, and Horace and Cecelia Carey; nieces Kelli Michelle Knee and Bridget
Rose Brantner; his nephews Joseph Lewison and Michael Wayne Peterson.
He will be forever remembered and dearly missed by his devoted family,
Keith and Rosemary Price of Rose Creek, Minn., Rosemary (Ronnie) Jepson of
Chippewa Falls, Wis., Jim (Betty) Price of Mille Lacs, Minn., Kathy (Gary)
Tapp Ellsworth, Wis., Teresa (Todd) Gadient, of Red Wing, Minn., Maria (Lee)
Schultz of Lake City, Minn., Tom (Tami) Price of Alden, Minn., Brian
(Shirley) Price of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Gina (Wayne) Peterson of Eden
Prairie, Minn., Anthony (Maria) Price of St. Anthony, Minn., Andrew
(Natalie) Price of Kasson, Minn., Mary (Jon) Lewison of Dodge Center,
Minn., and Anne (Mike) Bauer of Rose Creek, Minn.; over 100 nieces,
nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Joseph touched the lives of everyone he met by his sincere innocence
and his vulnerabilities, particularly his closest friends, Ron Stroup and
John Julson.
His life was so exceptional. Of course, Almighty God, in his wondrous
plan for Joe, designated the hour and day. Just the day before, the Gospel
reading for Mass was: Matthew 11:25-30: "Our Lord Jesus praises His
Father for revealing to the simple; the things that have been hidden from
the learned and the clever." We must remember that God is perfectly
simple to those who are simple. We will never truly be able to grasp the
treasure we had having Joseph in our life.
Friends and family are invited to attend Mass at 3 p.m. on Friday,
July 11, followed by visitation from 4 until 7 p.m. The Most Holy Rosary
will be prayed at 6 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Saturday,
July 12, at St. Peters Catholic Church, Rose Creek. Burial will take
place at St. Peters Catholic Cemetery and lunch will be served in the
church hall following interment.
