Christine L. Brown

1951-2014

Christine L. Brown, 63, of Austin, Minnesota, died at her home on May 7, 2014.

Christine, or "Kryss" as most people knew her, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 13, 1951, to Hugo and Corinne Freed. She moved with her family to Laramie, Wyoming, where she was raised and educated, graduating from Laramie Senior High in May of 1969.

She was married to Darwin Joseph (Joe) Brown on January 13, 1978. In December of 1989, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming, Casper, in Social Work. In 2002, she earned her MSW from South Dakota State University. Kryss was quite musical, and over the years enjoyed playing cello, piano, pipe organ, and singing with various church choirs and barbershop ensembles. She also enjoyed using her impressive talents as a seamstress and needle worker. She was a tireless champion of women's safe-house shelters, and volunteered countless hours taking calls on various crisis hotlines in whatever community in which she found herself. Kryss was a person known for her solid dependability, kind generosity, and an undeterrable will.

In her family of origin, she was legendary for the depth and detail of her memory, seemingly able to retrieve exact dates, names, and detailed memories whenever needed. She was a thoughtful listener, and identified deeply with the pains of others. How quick she was to laugh at life's all too abundant supply of comic relief. She took great delight in her roles as mother and grandmother, happily knitting or crocheting blankets, booties, or buntings for who knows how many happy additions to the families of relatives and friends.

Kryss is survived by her son, Adelbert Wilbur (Wil) Brown (friend Leslie), Elgin, North Dakota; her mother, Corinne (Franklin) Freed Janecke, Austin, Minnesota; David Freed, Austin, Minnesota; Mark Freed (Carol), Coon Rapids, Minnesota; Susan Freed Heck (Matthew), Durham, North Carolina; Holly Freed Sager (Rev. Mike), Austin, Minnesota; and Rev. Dan Freed (Sheila), Dickinson, North Dakota.

She is preceded in death by her father Hugo Freed.

A memorial service will be held at Faith Evangelical Free Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014, with the Rev. Michael Sager officiating. The Brown family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements

Joseph Edward
LOHMAN

1859-1938

Mr. Lohman passed away at his home in Mapleview Addition Thursday morning at 1:40, July 21, 1938, at the age of 78 years. Had he lived until August 18 he would have been 79.

He was born at Shullsburg, Wisconsin, one of a family of 10 children, all of whom have preceded him in death except the youngest sister, Nellie.

In 1892 he was united in marriage with Sarah Jane Woodson of Austin, daughter of earlier settlers here. They moved to Colorado where Mr. Lohman engaged in mining activities. Here their two oldest children were born. In 1898 they returned to Austin where they have since resided except for a few years spent at Wells, Minnesota.

Mr. Lohman's activities have been varied. Before his marriage he was employed by Eastman and Allen and as their foreman helped build several railroad lines. While in Colorado he was interested in the mining industry. When he returned to Austin he was for many years a member of the partnership of Martin, Cipra, Lohman and Shubert, sewer contractors. In all his work he never spared himself, but did his share and more of the hardest tasks.

About 11 years ago he was compelled to give up his active work on account of his health and moved from his old home at 1011 Grove street to the Mapleview Addition where he and Mrs. Lohman were engaged in building modest homes for resale, on property they had purchased there. Here they were very happy and contented.

Mr. Lohman was always an honest, outspoken man and he admired these qualities among others. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances but his main interest was his home and family. He was never more content than when he had his wife and children with him.

He belonged to no organizations in later years but always took a keen interest in local and world events. He was not a member of any church but thought they were all doing good work for the same end. He often expressed his belief in a supreme God and a life hereafter.

His wife and children were all with him when he passed away, except one son Jack, who resides in California and was unable to come. His wife has lost a true and devoted husband and his daughter and sons a kind and loving father.

He leaves besides his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lea F. Duholm and three sons, Art J. Lohman and J.E. Lohman, Jr. of Austin, and Jack Lohman of South Gate, California. Three sons have preceded him in death, Milton and Frank in infancy and William, a world war veteran, three years ago.

The funeral will be held at the Schutte Funeral Home on Sunday, July 24 at 3:00 p.m., the Rev. W. E. Shields of Waseca officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Jean was born May 16, 1936 to Arthur & Mary (Wilkinson) Larson in Madison, Wisconsin. At the age of 14 her family moved to Rochester, Minnesota. They moved to Austin two years later. Jean graduated from Austin High School in 1954. On October 1, 1960 Jean married Jon Rosenthal of Austin. They lived their entire married life in Austin. To this union three sons were born. Jean loved her job at the college. As part of the maintenance department, she had the opportunity to know and appreciate all of her coworkers, plus many of the students.

Everyone knew Jean was a trusted coworker and friend. After her retirement, she was able to spend more time pursuing her favorite pastimes. Jean looked forward to an annual fishing trip to northern Minnesota, watching her children and grandchildren enjoy the outdoors. The relaxation of summer brought such joy to her heart. Jean was very passionate about animals, loved dogs and cats, and was a supporter of the Humane Society. With her many "feeding stations," Jean's backyard was a haven for birds, squirrels and other wildlife. In recent years, Jean found that she loved the SW area of Arizona, Nevada & California.

She enjoyed extensive travel in Arizona, and looked forward to each and every opportunity to go in that direction. Colorado and Missouri were two of her other favorites. Jean enjoyed her quiet time by playing cards with family and friends, working in her garden or reading a good book. She always made a difference in the lives of all she knew and cared about. Her love, kindness and thoughtfulness for others made her a unique individual. She was deeply loved, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
