1861 - William W. Williams -- 1944
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Christ
Episcopal church for William Williams of 1607 E. Oakland, the Rev. Charles
H. Crawford in charge. Interment was in Oakwood cemetery.
Mr. Williams, one of Austin's honored citizens, was retired
from service as machinist for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. P and P railroad
eight years ago, after giving service for 50 years at the age of 76. His
health was impaired and his failing was gradual. He received treatment
in Rochester during these years, but not until four days previous to his
passing on Friday afternoon, last, did he take to his bed and the end
came peacefully and without great suffering.
Mr. Williams was a man of true worth, born and
reared in England, 83 years ago, he was a lifetime member of the
church of England, attending the Sunday school as a child and holding
membership throughout the years. He lived his christianity for he dealt
fairly with workmen and friends. He was sincere, quiet and home loving.
William W. Williams was born on January 26, 1861, in Dawley
Magne, Shropshire, England. He received his schooling there and learned the
machinist's trade which he followed through his lifetime until his
retirement. On March 28, 1887, he was united in marriage to Mathilda
Dangerfield of Shropshire. They took their vows in St. James parish
church in Warwick. The young couple came to the U.S. following their
wedding and for most of the 57 years they have been citizens of Austin.
It was then that they took memberhsip in Christ Episcopal church. Upon
their arrival in this country they paid a brief visit with friends in
Chicago, then came directly here, where Mr. Williams took up his trade
with the railroad. Everyone knew this quiet, kindly gentleman.
To Mr. and Mrs. Williams, one son, Alfred, was born, who
with his wife, survives a kind husband and father. His first interests were
in his home. His church too received the same devoted service. He was a
member of the local lodge 563, of the International Association of
Machinists.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams were the oldest living members of
the church. In his passing, Austin has lost a grand man, a citizen who
gave his all to home, to church and state.

Mavis A. (Christofferson) Bishop 1924-2014
Mavis A. Bishop, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, March 14, 2015,
at her home.
Mavis was the youngest of nine children born on February 7, 1924, to
Anker and Annie Christofferson. She graduated from Blooming Prairie High
School. In 1942, she married Bernardo (Jim) Bishop. After the war, they
moved to Austin and Mavis started working for Hormel in the dairy pack.
She was proud of her work at the plant and made many close friends there
that lasted her lifetime. Many of these friends she continued to lunch
with after retirement. Though very afraid of water, Mavis enjoyed boating
on Sunday afternoons with Jim, Charlene, Bernard, and Sandra. You wouldn't
catch her without her personal life vest and a wide straw hat.
She loved gardening with Jim, after moving to a small acreage outside
of Austin. They would share bushels of tomatoes with friends and family
after filling every jar she owned. Her rose garden was her pride and joy.
Shortly after her retirement, Jim had a stroke. Mavis cared for him
for more than 20 years. They enjoyed camping at Beaver trails every weekend
and continued to travel to Arizona. She was always game for a road trip to
visit a grandchild and even got her first passport at age 88, so she could
attend her grandson’s wedding in Mexico.
St. Olaf was her church home. Wednesday suppers and after church coffee
hour were times when she could visit with her close friends. Helping make
lefse was the highlight of her year. She also crocheted afghans like a
production line until her shoulder got sore. Her lighthouse collection was
amazing. Mavis had many interests and enjoyed life. Mavis will be sadly
missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bernardo ‘Jim,’ daughter Sandra,
grandson, Dan Donhowe, four brothers and four sisters.
Mavis is survived by her daughter: Charlene Donhowe, of Sun City,
Arizona; son and daughter-in-law: Bernard and Vernice Bishop, of Austin;
five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Shirley Kent,
of Iowa; Jean Chipp, of Iowa; brother-in-law: Ronald Bishop, of Iowa; many
nieces and nephews.

will be at the church on Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Memorials may be

Lawrence E. Harris, 85, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, was born April
22, 1928, in Mason City, Iowa, and passed away on Monday evening, April
29, 2013, in Sun City West, Arizona.
Lawrence Earl Harris was born to William Earl Harris and his second
wife, Martha (Johnson), in Mason City, Iowa, on April 22, 1928. Lawrence
was the fourth of five children born to William Earl. Lawrence’s brothers
and sisters were Myrtle, Marie (Everhart), Warren Glen Harris, Frederick
Arthur Harris and Ella Mae (Carberry).
Lawrence's second great-grandparents, William T. Harris and Mary Ann
(Warmington), emigrated from Cornwall, England, to Wisconsin around 1848.
Lawrence’s mother, Martha, and his grandparents, Alfred Johansson (changed
name to Johnson arriving in the U.S.) and Maria (Lorentzson), emigrated
from Sweden to Illinois when Martha was about three months old in 1900.
Lawrence was raised in and around the Mason City area. His father,
who went by his middle name of Earl, farmed just southwest of Mason City
and later near Clear Lake until he died of heart failure when Lawrence was
only 13 years old. For about a year, Lawrence continued to farm with his
mother. Then, for almost two years, he farmed with relatives. When he was
16, Lawrence was hired by the Milwaukee Railroad, from which he retired
in 1984 at Mason City, Iowa.
Lawrence married Betty Jane Cogill, daughter of Benjamin Leroy and
Christina (Fjeldstadt) Cogill, on Sept. 8, 1946, at Riverside Park in
Independence, Kansas. Lawrence and Betty have three children, Barbara
Jean Poindexter, Linda Sue Harris, and William Earl Harris. Lawrence
and Betty moved to Austin, Minn., in 1954 when the Milwaukee Railroad
transferred Lawrence there. In July 1969, when the Milwaukee Railroad
closed down operations in Austin, Lawrence and Betty were transferred
to Aberdeen, S.D. Around July/August 1982, the Milwaukee Railroad
transferred Lawrence and Betty from Aberdeen back to Mason City,
where he retired. Lawrence enjoyed building things. He had many
of his own tools to build things. Over the years, he built several
homes, garages, barns, and renovated some homes, too.
In 1973, Betty and Lawrence became empty nesters. They flew to tour
Europe in July 1978, visiting Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, England
and the Netherlands. After Lawrence retired in 1984, he enjoyed more than
25 years of retirement life with Betty, in their recreational vehicle,
traveling all over the U.S. They enjoyed bowling, fishing, crafting,
playing cards and Betty playing her piano/keyboard organ. In 2008, Betty
and Larry gave up the RV life and settled in the Phoenix, Arizona, area.
Lawrence and his wife, Betty, were married nearly 65 years when she

Lawrence passed from complications of acute renal failure, further
complicated by diabetes and cancer, on Monday evening, April 29, 2013,
at Hospice of Arizona in Sun City West, Arizona. It was his desire not
