Albert H. Fleiner 1925-2013
Albert H. Fleiner, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, December 17,
2013, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.
Al was born November 21, 1925, in Waunakee, Wisconsin, to William and
Anna Fleiner. He grew up in Waunakee where he graduated from high school.
Al entered the United States Army in 1943, and served in the Philippines
during World War II.
On Jan. 5, 1952, he married Janice Gee in Waunakee. They have resided
in Austin since 1952, where they raised four children.
Al was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church, the Elks Club, the
American Legion and the Austin Country Club. He enjoyed baseball, golf,
cross country skiing, fishing and hunting.
Al began his career at Hormel in 1952, and he retired in 1985. He
held numerous positions including Director of Cured and Smoked Meats
and the title of Cure Master of Cure 81 hams.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Fleiner, of Austin; daughter,
Susan LoCantro (Jerry), of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Peggy Fleiner, of
Florence, S.C.; daughter, Amy Cutter (Bill), of Eagan, Minn.; son,
Bill Fleiner (Wendy), of Austin, Minn.; eight grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; brother, Bob Fleiner (Maryanne), of Waunakee,
Wis.; brother, Bill Fleiner (Judy), of Waunakee, Wis.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Fleiner;
brother, Romain; sisters, Marion and Alma.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 21,
2013, at St. Edwards Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
Military rites will be by American Legion Post 91.
Memorials are preferred to St. Edwards Catholic Church and the American
Cancer Society.

Robert L. Clark 1926-2013
Robert L. Clark, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, December 15,
2013 at his home.
Robert Loren Clark was born April 7, 1926, in Austin, to Martin Clark,
Sr. and Bertha (Fleming) Clark.
Bob was a lifelong resident of the Austin area. He attended the Austin
Public School system. While attending school, he was employed in concrete
construction, some of which can still be found on Main Street.
Bob worked for the Hormel Co. and married Margaret (Peg) Schrunk on
September 2, 1944. Bob served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954, and
was stationed in Japan.
After his service, Bob returned to the Hormel Co. where he worked for
38 years, in various departments. He last worked in the shipping department,
which was his favorite. During his employment at the Hormel Co., Bob was
committed to the Union, served on the Executive Board of Local P9, and
played a key role in the negotiation team with Jay Hormel. Bob was a
person true to his beliefs and spoke what he thought.
Bob and Peg spent 34 years of their life raising their "girls"
on a "hobby" farm south of Austin. They moved back to Austin where
they have resided for almost 19 years at Oak Park Village. Bob served many
years on the Oak Park Village Board.
Bob was especially active in the community after his retirement, serving
on the council at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, in Lutheran Brotherhood,
and was instrumental in bringing Habitat for Humanity to Austin. They are
currently members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Bob enjoyed visiting and
seeing people in the community.
Besides Bob's talent in the area of carpentry, he was gifted in many
areas and was a beloved handyman to many.
Bob and Peg enjoyed traveling. They traveled the United States, as well
as, many parts of the world. Their travels included a treasured trip to
Tanzania visiting their missionary daughter.
Bob loved his girls. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather
and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Erin Ransom,
sister Beatrice Hull, brothers Edward, Richard, Marvin, Martin Jr., and
Lenard.
Bob is survived by his wife Margaret, of Austin; daughters and
sons-in-law: Roberta and Jerry Ransom, of Rose Creek, Minn.; Wendy
and Kerry Dennison, of Rochester, Minn.; Jaynan Clark, of Spokane,
Wash.; grandchildren: Kristen (Chris) Prescott, Cory (Amanda) Ransom,
Neil (Sarah) Dennison, Colten, Augustus, Anandae, and Asher Clark;
great-grandchildren: Dayne, Ruby, Jasper Ransom; Kellen and Hadley
Prescott; Cayden and Amarah Dennison; sisters-in-law: Lois Clark, of
Austin; Verdell Clark, of Austin; Janis (Ed) Brockhouse, of Lake Benton,
Minn.; nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial service will be held. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary
is in charge of arrangements.

Scott Raymond Sheeley 1962-2013
Scott Raymond Sheeley, 51, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at
his home in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota.
Scott was born October 4, 1962, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Phillip
and Janet (Bjorgo) Sheeley. He is survived by his sons, Patrick and Peter,
from Elk River, Minnesota; and Nicholas, of Hugo, Minn.; his mother, Janet
(Bjorgo) Sheeley, of Austin; his brother, Steven (Teri) Sheeley, of
St. Cloud, Minnesota; sister, Sandra (Ross) Ohman, of South St. Paul,
Minnesota; His very special friends Angelo Rulli and Sue Hendricks, of
Vadnais Heights; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dustin, in December 2012;
his father, Phillip, in 2012; his sister, Stacy, in infancy; his
grandparents Vernon 'Barney' and Clarice Bjorgo.
Scott loved any kind of sports. He wrestled and played baseball. He loved
animals and had his dog, Rudy. They were the best of friends. Also, since
he was a child he was very inquisitive about how things worked and he could
fix just about anything. His life consisted of his family, and he enjoyed
all the get-togethers. When you spoke of Scott, you always said Scott and
the boys. He treasured them and was so proud of his sons.
Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. December 27, 2013, at Grace Lutheran
Church in Austin, with Pastor Jeff Forbes officiating. The gravesite service
will be at a later date.

Thomas Lowell "TL" Larson 1952-3013
Thomas Lowell "TL" Larson, 61, of Austin, Minnesota, died
peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at
Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born January 30, 1952, in Austin, Minnesota, to Douglas and
Elizabeth (Madix) Larson. A 1970 graduate of Austin High School, Tom
married Joan Anderson on Nov. 7, 1980, in Owatonna. After working and
living in Owatonna from 1979 to 1993, the couple moved back to Austin.
Tom worked as a self-employed carpenter in the Austin/Owatonna area. He
enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, family, and friends, going to
stock car races, and shooting pool.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Larson, of Austin; and his son, Matthew
(Amanda) Larson, of Owatonna, Minn.; three grandchildren Brady, Blake, and
Anthony; one brother, Mike (Rae) Larson, of Webster City, Iowa, one sister,
Leslie (Mikey) Newton of Greenville, S.C.; a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Douglas and Elizabeth Larson.
A private family memorial service will be held Monday evening, December
23, 2013. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Worlein
Funeral Home in Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the
family. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with

Elmer Edward Lee 1925-2013
Elmer Edward Lee, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, December
18, 2013, at his home.
Elmer was born July 10, 1925, to Edwin and Elsie (Hightshoe) Lee. He
attended school in Owatonna, Minn.
On June 14, 1947, he married Dorothy Bender in Austin. She preceded him
in death on December 17, 1977. On Feb. 14, 1981, he married Phyllis Bender at
St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.
Elmer worked on the Milwaukee Railroad and then Hormel for 40 years. He
was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
Elmer enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, fixing cars and
welding. He especially enjoyed his lake home at Madison Lake, Minn.
Elmer was a member of the Austin Eagles, American Legion and Moose Club.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Lee, of Austin; daughters, Judy
(Donald) Jacobsen, of Austin; Sheila Blacketer, of Rochester, Minn.;
Shirley (Richard) Nelson, of Austin; Joyce (James) Flink, of Albert
Lea, Minn.; sons, Edwin (Judy) Lee, of Bixby Minn.; Dale (Julie) Lee,
of Madison Lake; Dennis Lee, of Waseca, Minn.; David (Brenda) Lee, of
Waseca; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard
(Ida May) Lee, of Austin; Virgil (Nancy) Lee, of Bloomington, Minn.;
sisters, Evelyn (Marvin) Durben, of Bloomington; Vera Armbrust (sp.
Friend, Richard Schumacher), of Austin. In addition to his first wife,
he is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Elsie Lee; sisters,
Lucille Lee and Rose Durben; granddaughter, Michelle Majewski.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at
St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristi Koppel officiating. Friends may
call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour
before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Grandview
Cemetery.

Arlene Louise (Sheumaker) Pike 1913-1971
#1:
Carpenter Woman Killed
OSAGE, IOWA - A two-car accident yesterday afternoon north of Osage took
the life of a 58-year old Carpenter woman, Mrs. Guy Pike.
Mrs. Pike was killed outright in the crash as the car she was driving
collided head-on with another car on a curve on Highway 218 six and a half
miles north of here about 4 p.m. yestarday.
Authorities said a car driven by Garry E. Miller, 20, of Dexter,
Minnesota, crossed the center line and struck the Pike car.
Miller is a patient at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage with
chest injuries and facial cuts.
Wayne Krull, 18, a passenger in the Miller car, is also at the Osage
hospital, with head injuries, cuts and bruises.
Two other passengers in the car were transferred to a Rochester,
Minnesota hospital following treatment at the Osage hospital. They are
Bucky Evan Kuhlman, 21 of Dexter, and Charles MacLachlan, of Rose Creek,
Minnesota.
Authorities said all four were thrown from the car while Mrs. Pike was
pinned inside her auto. Both vehicles were a total loss.
Charges are pending, authorities said.
Schroeder and Houg Funeral Home at St. Ansgar is in charge of funeral
arrangements for Mrs. Pike.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Roger Osmonson of
Otranto, and one son, Roland, at home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Pike. Rev. J.
Sopko, pastor, and Rev. E. Labrenz, a former pastor, were in charge of
the services at the Otranto Community Church. Burial was in the Woodbury
cemetery near Lyle, Minnesota, and Schroeder and Houg of St. Ansgar, made
the arrangements.
Arlene Louise Sheumaker was born on February 24, 1913, at Wiota, Iowa,
the daughter of Eli and Nell Sheumaker. The family later moved to Worth
county and she attended and graduated from Otranto high school.
She married Guy Pike on February 26, 1936. They farmed in Worth county
until 1951, when they moved to Oakdale, Iowa. They returned to the Otranto
area in 1951, when she was employed as a cook at the Otranto school. In the
fall of 1961 the Pike family moved to Carpenter, where she was employed by
the St. Ansgar school system as assistant cook, until the time of her death
on July 31, 1971.
Mrs. Pike was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, one
sister and her son, Roger.
She is survived by her husband, Guy; one daughter, Sara, Mrs. Roger
Osmonson; one son, Roland, at home; and one granddaughter, Jill Osmonson.
She was a member of the Otranto Community church. She was church
custodian for a number of years.

Sharon K. (Johnson) Kasten 1946-2013
Memorial service for Sharon Kasten will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,
December 28, 2013, at the LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Herman
Bakker officiating. Burial will be in the Big Spring Cemetery at a
later date. Friends may call at the church for one hour prior to the
service at the church.
Sharon K. Kasten, 67, died Thursday, December 19, 2013, at St. Marys
Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Sharon was born October 31, 1946, in Spring Grove, Minnesota, to
Darrel and Jarla Johnson. She graduated from Rose Creek High School in
1964. Sharon married David Kasten on October 1, 1966, in Our Saviors
Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota. They had two children that they
raised on a farm near LeRoy, Minnesota.
Sharon is preceded in death by her beloved sister, Polly. The two of
them loved to take trips to Lake Tahoe and Virginia. Sharon is also
preceded in death by her son, Rodney. The two of them shared a love of
flowers, cooking, baking, and entertaining family. She was never the
same after that tragic day in June 2002, and it gives her family
tremendous peace knowing the two of them are reunited once again.
Sharon loved her family, her cats, playing bridge, bingo, and taking
trips to Virginia to see her daughter and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, David Kasten, of LeRoy, Minn.; one
daughter, Rhonda (David) Tuck, of Lake Monticello, Virginia; four
grandchildren, Riley Kasten, of Byron, Minnesota; Hayley Tuck, Allyson
Tuck, and Aiden Tuck, of Lake Monticello, Virginia; two sisters, Pam Meling,
of Austin; and Cindy Graham, of Austin; and two brothers, Rick Johnson, of
Austin; and Randy Johnson, of Rose Creek, Minnesota.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Darrel and Jarla Johnson; her
sister and brother-in-law, Polly, and Gary Kraling; and her son, Rodney

Ione Ruby (Peterson) Hedrick 1936-2013
Ione Ruby Hedrick, 77, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully
Friday, December 20, 2013, at her home.
She was born on April 7, 1936, in Austin to Emil F. and Ruby F.
(Nelson) Peterson. A lifelong southern Minnesota resident, Ione graduated
from Austin High School, was married and later divorced. As a homemaker,
Ione enjoyed cooking, baking wedding cakes for her friends and family,
watching NASCAR and westerns and reading nonfiction books. She loved
spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and taking care of her cats.
Survivors include her children, Kelly Pramann, LeVerne Michael Altenburg
Sr., of Austin; SueAnn Holland, of Lafayette, Colorado; Steven Charles
Hedrick, of Faribault, Minnesota; and Kathy Hedrick, of Austin, Minnesota;
nine grandchildren, Melany, Melissa, Andrew, LeVerne Jr., Tahja, Ashley,
Layne, Dwight and Katie; seven great-grandchildren. Her siblings include
Niles (Marg) Peterson, of North Carolina; Louise (Paul) Munson, of
Rosemont, Minnesota, Jerry (Gail) Peterson, and many nieces, nephews,
other relatives and wonderful friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Roger Peterson,
a grandson, Kiley, and infant son, Michael.

Frances D. Fryer 1925-2013
Frances D. Fryer, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died at home Wednesday,
December 18, 2013.
Frances was born April 23, 1925, in Gilman, Wisconsin, to Daniel L.
DeLaney and Gertrude Wenninger (DeLaney). She received a masters degree from
the University of Wisconsin — Madison and taught seventh grade. Her hobbies
included knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading and singing.
She is survived by her son, Frank (Marie) Fryer, of Lyle, Minnesota;
daughter, Kathy DeLaney, of Tucson, Arizona; sister, Loretto Schwantes,
of Santa Barbara, California; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, Dan and Gertrude DeLaney; sister,
Kathleen Schmitt; brother, Dan DeLaney.
A service time will be held at a later date. Rochester Cremation
Service is in charge of arrangements.

Larry A. Waltz, 69
Larry A. Waltz, 69, of rural Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully,
surrounded by his family, on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at St. Marys
Hospital in Rochester.
He was born September 7, 1944, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to
Archie and Ivy (Brandes) Waltz. He grew up in Clarks Grove, Minnesota. After
graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1962, Larry began farming
with his Dad. He showed sheep, and greatly enjoyed farming. On
April 22, 1978, Larry married Vickie Wilcox at Crane Community Chapel in
Austin. He especially loved the time he spent with his family and friends.
Larry is survived by his wife, Vickie Waltz, of rural Austin; nephew,
Joel (Diane) Lunning, of Plymouth, Wis.; many other wonderful relatives
and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Ivy Waltz;
sister, Arlene Lunning, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013,
at Crane Community Chapel with Pastor Dale Christianson officiating.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Worlein Funeral Home,
and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment

Vivian Viola (Vaith) Ruzek 1914-2013
Obituary for Vivian Viola Ruzek
Vivian Viola Ruzek (Vaith), 99, of Austin, died Tuesday December 24,
2013 at Sacred Heart Care Center Assisted Living.
She was born June 23, 1914 in Blooming Prairie to Edward H. Vaith and
Anna M. Vaith (Haubenschild) and spent most of her life in the Austin and
Blooming Prairie area.
Vivian was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
She was hard working and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting,
creating many beautiful doilies, table clothes, bedspreads, quilts,
mittens, booties, and more in her free time.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth V. (Janet) Ruzek, Jr.; two
grandchildren, Daniel (Maren) Ruzek and Valerie (Scott) Geary; six
great-grandchildren, Brady Geary, Beckett Geary, Basie Geary, Beth
Geary, Benny Ruzek, and Maya Ruzek; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 31,
2013 at Sacred Heart Care Center with Father Donald Zenk officiating.
Friends may call one hour before the service at Sacred Heart Care Center
on Tuesday.
Interment will be in St. Columbanus Cemetery in Blooming Prairie in the
spring.

Dewey James Campbell 1898-1971
Funeral services were held September 2, 1971, for Dewey Campbell, 73,
a resident of the Otranto community, who died August 30, at the Veteran's
hospital in St. Paul. Mr. Campbell had been hospitalized for a time at
Mitchell County Memorial Hospital before going to the St. Paul hospital.
Rev. D. Ashley of Bethel Alliance Church in Lyle, and Rev. E. Unseth,
church pastor, were in charge of the services at the Mona Lutheran Church.
Burial was in the Woodbury cemetery.
Dewey James Campbell was born on May 23, 1898, on a farm near Meltonville,
the son of Wilmer J. and Randena Anderson Campbell.
Rosa Anna Schlosser of Nora Springs and Dewey Campbell were married on
August 23, 1919. They lived in Worth and Mitchell counties before moving
to Otranto in 1928.
Mr. Campbell was a grain and livestock dealer most of his life.
Surviving are his son, Roger Campbell; two granddaughters of Lyle;
one brother, Robert W. of Austin; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Anderson
of Austin, Mrs. B.F. Wilson (Cora) of Miami, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa, who died in 1962; his
parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Donald Campbell.

Dewey Campbell Funeral Held September 2
Funeral services for Dewey James Campbell, 73, who died Monday, August
30 in Veterans hospital, St. Paul, were held on Thursday, September 2 at
Mona Lutheran church with the Rev David Ashley of Bethel Alliance church,
Lyle, Minnesota, and the Rev Einar Unseth of Mona officiating.
Interment was in Woodbury cemetery west of Lyle.
Dewey J. Campbell, son of Wilmer J. and Randena (Anderson) Campbell
was born May 23, 1898, on a farm near Meltonville. On August 23, 1919, he
was married to Rosa Anna Schlosser of Nora Springs and they lived in Worth
and Mitchell counties before moving to Otranto in 1928. One son, Roger was
born to this union. His wife Rosa Anna died in 1962.
Dewey was a lifelong resident in the area, being active as a grain
and livestock dealer most of his life.
Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Arlene Campbell,
his two granddaughters, Mary and Anna, all of Lyle, one brother, Robert
W. of Austin, two sisters, Mrs. Florence Anderson, Austin, Mrs. B.F.
(Cora) Wilson of Miami, Okla., nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rosa Anna; two
brothers. Kenneth and Donald Campbell.

Harold Bjortomt Funeral Services
Held February 3, 1989, at
Albert Lea Lutheran Church.
Funeral services for Harold "Shorty" Bjortomt of Albert Lea, Minnesota,
and formerly of St. Ansgar, who died Tuesday, January 31 (1989) at Naeve
Hosptal, Albert Lea, Minnesota, of natural causes, were held Friday,
February 3 at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, with the Reverend Donald
Rose officiating.
Mr. Bjortomt was born April 4, 1915 to Helmer and Alma (Melum) Bjortomt.
He was baptized and confirmed at LeRoy Lutheran Church. He was graduated
from Waldorf College in Forest City.
He married Ruth Petersen June 14, 1941. They lived in LeRoy and
Adams, Minnesota, St. Ansgar, and then moved to Albert Lea in 1965.
Mr. Bjortomt earned the rank of Eagle Scout while in LeRoy and was
Scoutmaster in St. Ansgar. He worked for Interstate Power for 35 years. He
was a member of the Moose, Eagles, and International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three sons, Don of Huntington,
Indiana, Larry of Waterloo, and Roger of Mankato; six grandchildren;
one great grandson; and one sister, Mrs. Robert (Violet) Adams of
Asheville, North Carolina.
Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Gene R. Cafourek 1939-2013
Gene R. Cafourek, 74, of Stewartville, Minnesota, died Thursday,
December 26, 2013, at Maple Manor in Rochester, Minnesota.
He was born March 1, 1939, at home in rural Hayward, Minnesota, to Rudy
and Emily (Blecha) Cafourek. Gene attended grade school in Maple Island and
Moscow before graduating from Austin High School in 1957. He married Delores
Wolfe in December 1958. The couple had three children, and were later
divorced.
Gene made his career in agriculture, working at various elevators over
the years. He worked for Farmer’s Elevator for many years, and then moved
to Stewartville in 1992, to work for All American Coop, retiring in 2001. He
also had a lawn spraying business, taking care of 45 to 50 residences in
addition to seven cemeteries.
A past member of the Eagles Club, Moose Lodge, and Saddle Club, Gene
enjoyed music, especially country. He loved to dance and enjoyed woodworking.
He cut out many people’s names and sayings from wood. A lover of horses and
buggies, he was also a bull rider and participated in many rodeos. Gene's
favorite saying was, "Ya gotta have fun!"
Survivors include one daughter, Kelly (Dennis) Gimberline, of
Cameron, Wisconsin; two sons, Dean (Lynn) Cafourek, of Tyler, Texas;
and Scott Cafourek, of Tyler, Minn.; special friend Dorothy Toogood, of
Rochester; three grandchildren, Kaylee, Kyle, and Dwight; sisters and
brothers-in-law Donna Berry, of Austin, Lois (Stan) Wiegers of Plymouth,
Minn; Sherry (Allan) Lunt, of Austin. He was preceded in death by his
parents Rudy and Emily Cafourek and one brother Allan.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at St. Olaf
Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Kristi Koppel officiating. Visitation
will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. In accordance with
Gene’s wishes, his body has been donated to the Mayo Clinic Anatomical
Bequest Program. Interment will be in Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, at a later
date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed
to the ALS Association at 333 North Washington Ave, Suite 105, Minneapolis,

Muriel D. Schwartz, 84 of Austin, MN, died Wednesday, December 25, 2013
at Mayo Clinic Health Systems of Austin.
Muriel was born on August 12, 1929 in Blooming Prairie, MN to Raymond and
LaVera Christofferson. She graduated from Austin High School in 1947. Muriel
married Norman Schwartz on November 9, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in
Dexter, MN.
Muriel was a “Red Hat Lady”, a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church,
the Daughters of the American Revolution and the hospital auxiliary. For
many years, Muriel ran "Cakes by Muriel" making wedding cakes. She
was very active in the garden club and the card club. In her spare time, she
did a lot of genealogy research. She loved flowers, especially orchids.
Muriel enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Tony Schwartz and
sister Marjorie.
Muriel is survived by her husband Norman Schwartz, Austin, Minnesota;
children: Carol & Don Jesness, Eagan, Minnesota; Ronnie & Patty Schwartz,

Marion Elsie Kessel 1931-2013
Marion Elsie Kessel was born June 29, 1931, at home in rural Dexter
Township, Mower County, Minnesota to George Fred and Elsie Mary Charolette
(Studer) Schwartz, youngest of 10 children. She passed away Friday, December
20, 2013, at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa, at of 82 years.
Marion graduated high school with the class of 1949. On June 16, 1955,
she married Donald Keith Kessel and to this union three sons were born:
Dale, David, and Daniel. After attending college, at Mankato State Teachers
College, she taught grade school in several rural Minnesota schools.
Following marriage and moving to Eagle Grove, Iowa, she was an active
farm wife. After her children were all in school, she began working as a
cook. First at Brian’s Restaurant, followed by the Rotary Ann Nursing home
in Eagle Grove. After moving to rural Melrose in 1976, she worked at the
Chariton Manor until retiring in 2002.
After her husband retired from farming, they moved to Russell in 1984.
She lived there until she suffered a stroke this summer. She maintained
her independence, driving herself to a doctor’s appointment the day before
her stroke. Following rehabilitation, she lived at Chariton Manor until
the week of her death.
Marion enjoyed gardening, while living on the farm, she would regularly
can hundreds of jars of vegetables. After moving to Russell, she enjoyed
cultivating Hostas as well as Christmas Cactuses. She also collected tea
kettles. She used to sew most of her own clothes. After retiring, she
began quilting, making several quilts per year which she used as gifts.
She was a life-long Lutheran. Marion was baptized, confirmed and
married at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Dexter Township, Minnesota,
which was located within ½ mile of her childhood home. She told stories
of being carried on her brothers' shoulders when the snow was too deep
for her to walk to and from church. For the past 14 years, she has been
an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Chariton, Iowa. Marion was
also a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aide and the Red Hat Ladies club.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Keith Kessel; her
parents, Fred and Elsie (Studer) Schwartz; her sister, Caroline Beckman;
her brothers, Ervin, William, Earl, Henry, Ray, and Elmer Schwartz.
She is survived by her children, Dale Kessel, of Russell, Iowa; David
Kessel, of St. Louis, Missouri; and Daniel Kessel, of Russell; her sister,
Frieda Parrish, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; her brother, Norman Schwartz, of
Austin, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Services were held 2 p.m., Monday, December 23, 2013, at the Trinity
Lutheran Church located in Chariton, Iowa, with Pastor Dean Christ
officiating. Visitation took place from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, December
22, 2013, at the Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was held in the Chariton
Cemetery following services. Bearers were Matt Richardson, Ronnie
Christensen, Joseph Christensen, Curtis Roach, Mike Beatty, and Nick
Rowland. Memorials may be directed towards the Trinity Lutheran Church

Madonna Marie "Non" Bergman 1931-2013
Madonna Marie "Non" Bergman, 82, Duluth, died on Tuesday,
December 24, 2013, after a courageous struggle with a rare immune blood
disorder.
She was born in Austin, Minnesota, on January 24, 1931, to Irving H.
and Dorcas G. (Newling) Weber, and grew up in Lyle, Minn.
Non was a graduate of Saint Marys School of Nursing in Rochester,
Minnesota. She married Melvin Bergman on Aug. 20, 1955, and they have been
Duluth residents for the past 57 years. After raising her family, she
started the nursing re-certification program at VoTech, and gradually
moved into Blue Cross Blue Shield as a medical records reviewer.
Non loved to spend time with her family at the Crane Lake family
cabin. She was a world traveler, seeing all seven continents. She was
also a voracious reader and learner. She was a member of St. Johns
Catholic Church.
Non was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin; children Tom (Becky), Lisa,
Jim (Anne Marie), and Amy (David) Onken; grandchildren, Matt (Katherine),
Andy (Jennie), Laura, John, Dan, Hannah, Tanner, Emily, Maddy and Grace;
siblings, Jim (Helen) Weber, Mary (Jerry) Keenan, Sharon (Garry) Ellingson,
Tricia (Jim) Mork and Kathy (David) Damjanovich.
The Bergman family would like to thank Dr. Goueli, Dr. Knuths, and
the St. Lukes Oncology staff of 2W for their outstanding care.
Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation
continues on Monday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial

Maxine S. (Sproul) Klassen 1921-2013
Maxine Frances Klassen
(January 16, 1921 - December 26, 2013)
Maxine Sproul Klassen, 92 of Adams, Minnesota, passed away on December 26, 2013.
Maxine was born on January 16, 1921 in Barnes City, Iowa to Charles and Zephyr Sproul. She graduated from McIntire High School in Mcintire, Iowa. Maxine was married to the late Leonard Joseph Klassen on September 14, 1941. The couple was married for 66 years.
Maxine joined Leonard in a successful farming enterprise outside of Adams, Minnesota from 1947 to 1985 when they retired, leased their farm and built a home in Adams.
Maxine was the ultimate homemaker and mother. She kept a meticulous house and was a creative cook and an especially good baker. She loved recipe books and followed magazines devoted to cooking and baking. She often surprised her family with new and special dishes. Christmas was the season she dearly loved. She decorated her home with a beautiful tree and kept busy making candies, cookies, cakes and pies. Maxine also liked to travel.
Maxine raised five children, always helping with homework and counseling the children to work hard and take school seriously. She wanted her children to build good and successful lives. Family was important to Maxine, and she stayed close to her children, grandchildren and her other relatives.
Throughout her life, Maxine was as an active member of Sacred Heart Parish and a member of CCW. Later she volunteered at the Adams Health Center where she worked in the beauty shop.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents Charles Barrett and Zephyr Maude Sproul, her husband Leonard Joseph Klassen, sisters Letha Spencer, Verda Errington, a half brother, Vincent Grubb and several nieces and nephews.
Maxine is survived by her five children: David and Suzanne Klassen, Portland, MI, Diane Marks and Joseph Harmon, Charleston, SC, Sherrie (Prescott) and Rick Yerhot, Rochester, MN, James and Lori Klassen, Cheyenne WY, and Mark and Paula Klassen, Lockport, IL; grandchildren: Anne (Sean) McGuire, Ryan (Sarah) Sullivan, Nicole (Phil) Gernes, Jennifer (Shaun) Schreiber, Christopher (Kristen) Prescott, Jason (Nicole) Klassen, Eric Klassen, Barrett Klassen, Jacob Klassen, Amanda (Michael) Stanko; great grandchildren: Shannon, Aidan, and Claire McGuire; Chloe and London Sullivan; Bradyn and Kinley Gernes, Grace and Zachary Schreiber, Kellen and Hadley Prescott, Addison Klassen, and Mark Stanko; sisters: Sally (Everett) Leland, Bricelyn, MN and Mildred Eastman, Osage, IA; nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to Kathleen Swancutt (niece of Maxine) and Lillian Blade for their compassionate and excellent care of Maxine. Kathleen and Lillian loved and faithfully cared for Maxine in her home on a 24 hour basis for the past three years. Also, the family extends gratitude to Vernon Schaefer, long time friend of Maxine and Leonard, who faithfully and impeccably served as bookkeeper and business manager for their affairs in the last years of their lives.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 31st at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Swaminatha Pothireddy officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 6:30 PM on Monday at the Adams Funeral Home where friends may greet the family from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. There will also be a visitation at the church for one hour before the service on Tuesday morning.
Casket bearers will be Barrett Klassen, Jacob Klassen, Eric Klassen, Jason Klassen, Christopher Prescott, Phil Gernes, Shaun Schreiber, and Mike Stanko.

Sheldon J. Forthun, 77
Sheldon J. Forthun, 77, of Shoreview, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin,
Minnesota, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at home in Shoreview.
Sheldon was born April 17, 1936, in Moscow, Minnesota, to Elmer and Ruth
(Fodness) Forthun. The family then moved to Austin, where he grew up
with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sheldon was a 1955 graduate of Austin High School. In 1956, he was
married to Beverly Albert. They lived in Austin where their three children
were born. Sheldon and Beverly moved their family to Shakopee, Minn., in
1967, and that was their home until 1988, when they moved to Shoreview to
run their business. They also had their lake home in Brainerd, Minn.
Sheldon struggled with medical issues later in life, but always stayed
positive and strong in his faith. He was truly an inspiration to everyone
that met him.
Sheldon is survived by his sons: Jeffrey (Diane) Forthun, of Rosemount,
Minn.; Joel (Barbara) Forthun, of Cottage Grove, Minn.; daughter: Brenda
(Tom) Richards, of Plymouth, Minn.; seven grandchildren; sister in-law:
Judy (Doug) Meany, of Eagle River, Wis.; niece, nephews, a great-niece
and two great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly, parents Elmer and Ruth,
and his brother Paul.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 3, at the
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Glenn L. Monson
officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will
be at the mortuary for one hour before service on Friday.

Ruth Marie (Nelson) Allen, died on December 28, 2013 at St. Marks
Lutheran Home.
Ruth was born March 9, 1920 in Myrtle, Minnesota to Harry and Minnie
(Swanson) Nelson. She attended the Country School of Freeborn County. On
August 25, 1942, she married Harold (Dick) Allen at the Hayward Lutheran
Church. Ruth lived in or near London, Minnesota for most of her life. In
1957, she and the family moved to Austin.
Ruth spent time caring for her three children, enjoying her
grandchildren, working as a nurse’s aid caring for the elderly in
their homes, working at Gambles, cooking at the Alcove, Austin Country
Club and Tolly's. Ruth later volunteered for the Chamber of Commerce and
drove people to appointments. She enjoyed helping others, going to garage
sales, traveling and being with her children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and lately having her great-great-grandkids visit
her at St. Marks. Being Norwegian she made lefse, flatbrod, and krumkake.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Harold (Dick)
Allen, her parents Harry and Minnie Nelson, brother Harold Nelson and
sister-in-law Janeth Nelson, her sister in law and husband Mavis and
Leonard Billedeau, her brother in law and wife Lewis and Gladys Allen.
She is survived by her children Sharon Schmeling (Tim Anderson) of
Austin, Minnesota; John F. Allen of Schroeder, Minnesota; Bonnie Moen
(Allison) of Plover, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren,
nine great-great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, January 2nd,
2014 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Reverend Karen Behling
officiating. Interment will be at Woodbury Cemetery. Visitation will
be on Thursday from 12:30 PM until the time of the service at the church.

Henry Lowell Iverson 1924-2013
Henry Lowell Iverson, 89, of Port Lavaca, Texas, died December 22, 2013,
in Port Lavaca.
He was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Bennington Township to Theodore and
Dena (Gilbertson) Iverson. He was married September 1, 1950, to June Carol
Francis. He went to school all the way to eighth grade. He was employed
at Hormel Foods Corp. in Austin, Minnesota.
He is survived by sister Marlys Larson, of Spring Valley, Minnesota;
daughters, Debbie (Curt) Long, of Katy, Texas; Sherri (Benny) Judice, of
Port O Connor, Texas; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June; parents, Theodore and
Dena; and siblings, Raymond, Laverne and Violet.

Henry Iverson, 89
Henry Iverson, 89, previously of Austin, Minnesota, died of renal
failure Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca,
Texas.
Henry Lowell Iverson was born January 13, 1924, in Bennington Township
to Theodore and Dena Iverson.
Henry served in the U.S. Army during World War II, doing special duty
during war crimes trials in the Philippines. He married June Carol Francis
on Sept 1, 1950, and they lived in Austin, where he worked at Hormel for
30 years, retiring in 1980. Henry loved to work in the yard and raised a
large garden for many years. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed history
and biographies. Henry was a member of the American Legion, and Henry and
June were both members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, even after they moved
to Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June, in 2007; brothers
Leverne and Ray; sister, Violet, and sister, Doris, who died in infancy.
Henry is survived by his sister, Marlys Larson, of Spring Valley, Minn.;

Henry Iverson
Henry Iverson, 89, previously of Austin, Minnesota, died of renal
failure Sunday, December 22, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Port
Lavaca, Texas.
Henry Lowell Iverson was born January 13, 1924, in Bennington Township
to Theodore and Dena Iverson.
He served in the US Army during WWII, doing special duty during war
crimes trials in the Philippines. He married June Carol Francis on September
1, 1950, and they lived in Austin, Minnesota, where he worked at Hormel for
30 years, retiring in 1980. Henry loved to work in the yard and raised a
large garden for many years. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed history
and biographies. Henry was a member of the American Legion, and Henry and
June were both members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, even after they moved
to Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Henry is survived by his sister Marlys Larson of Spring Valley; daughters
Debra (Curt) Long of Katy, Texas, Sherri (Benny) Judice of Port O'Connor,
Texas; grandchildren Ashlee Long of Katy, Texas, Curtis (Brittany) Long
of Houston, Texas, Tara (Adam) Taylor of Austin, Texas, Tasha (Luis)
Falcon of Waianae, Hawaii, Brian Judice of Port O’Connor, Texas; and
three great-grandchildren Simon Taylor, and Adrian and Maddox Falcon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife June in 2007; brother's
Leverne and Ray; sister Violet, and sister Doris who died in infancy.
The Funeral will be at St. Olaf Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. on Monday,
June 30, with interment at Grandview Cemetery following the service

Lawrence Charles Schulz 1923-2013
Lawrence Charles Schulz, 90, died surrounded by his family on Saturday,
December 28, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was born at
home in Udolpho Township, rural Waltham, on January 22, 1923, to Theodore
and Leona (Faber) Schulz. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran
Church rural Waltham. He attended Trinity Parochial School for seven years
and District 51 public school for the eighth grade.
Lawrence served his country in the U.S. Army from January 15, 1945, to
December 20, 1946, serving with U.S. Occupational forces in Japan and
Korea. Before and after his service he worked on the family farm and for
other area farmers. He married Charlotte Esther Anderson on October 2, 1953,
at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waltham, Minnesota. He farmed and was employed
at Blooming Prairie Co-op Creamery and Golden Dairy, in Austin, Minnesota.
Lawrence was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Waltham,
Minnesota, and a member of the Hayfield American Legion Post 330. In
his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He
and Charlotte took several bus trips. Some one-day and others several
days within the U.S. He enjoyed farming, gardening and raising pigs,
chickens and cattle. He loved trivia and kept his and other’s minds
alert. He was always ready with a joke or quiz for family members and
friends. In later years he enjoyed watching Jeopardy and listening to music.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of 60 years; and three
sons; Gary (Karen) Schulz, of Carroll, Iowa; Paul Schulz, of Austin; and
Jim (Darcy) Schulz, of Dundas; one daughter, Kay (Boyd) Hysell, of
Stewartville; 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Sarah) Berg, Matthew (Kimberly)
Schulz, Jeff (Aly) Schulz, Jennifer (Jordan) Frayne, John (Emily) Schulz,
Dan (Danyel) Hysell, Rebekah (fiancé, Kent Dixon) Schulz, Gregory (Holly
Herr) Schulz, David Schulz and Crystal Hysell; 12 great-grandchildren
with two more expected in the spring; sister, Irene Schramm, of Red Wing,
Minn.; brother, Allen Schulz, of Austin; sister-in-law, Lois (Marvin) Stehr,
of Edina, Minn.; three nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death
by his parents, Theodore and Leona Schulz, step-mother, Minnie (Fett)
Schulz; brothers-in-law, Henry Schramm and John William “Bill” Hybben.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at
Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Waltham with Pastor Jeff Kuddes, officiating.
Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 330 will follow the
service in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m.,
Wednesday, January 1, at the Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to
the service at the church on Thursday. Condolences may be expressed to the

Peter Kent Darling 1946-2013
Peter Kent Darling, 67, of Springfield, Missouri, died Saturday,
December 28, 2013, at Cox Medical Center, Springfield, Missouri, after a
short illness.
He was born January 3, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Glenn and Gertrude
(Gruber) Darling. He was married to Linda Ann Rensink Darling Nov. 24,
1971, in Lime Springs, Iowa. He graduated from Austin High School in
1964 and attended Austin Jr. College (now Riverland). During his career
he worked for Digital Equipment Corporation in Massachusetts and spent
many years at the News-Leader in Springfield, Mo., as a computer technician.
He’d been retired the last 14 years. He was proud to serve his country
during the Vietnam War.
Pete could repair just about anything. He particularly enjoyed working
on cars and owned many antique cars over the years. He loved to travel
the country in his motorhome with his family and closer to home camping,
boating, fishing, skiing and, four-wheeling.
He is survived by his sons, Kent Peter Darling, of Springfield; and Brent
Scott Darling, of Minneapolis; daughters Sarah Jane Darling, and Jennifer
Jane Darling; ex-wife Linda Darling, of Austin, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jon David Darling.

Henry H. Deblon, Jr. 1933-2013
Henry H. Deblon, Jr., 80, died Saturday, December 28, 2013, of
complications resulting from a fall at his home on December 7, 2013.
He was born in Watertown, South Dakota, on March 11, 1933, to Henry
Sr. and Francis (Friske) Deblon. He graduated from Watertown High School
in 1951, and married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Balthazor, in 1953.
They then moved to Austin, Minnesota, where Henry worked for Northwestern
Bell. His job moved the family to Winona, Minnesota, in 1979, and he
continued to work for Northwestern Bell until his retirement in 1992.
The next year, Henry and three friends opened Fifth Street Liquor and
were known as the Four Knights on Fifth: Henry, Bill, Larry, Jack.
Henry was very active in his community, in both Austin and Winona. He
was a Cub Scout leader, Austin’s Annual Snowflake Festival chairman and
served on the Wilkie Board. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights
of Columbus and an active member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Winona.
Of all his community involvement, he took the most pride in coaching Club
League baseball in Austin for more than 15 years.
Henry is survived by Audrey, his wife of almost 61 years; a son Joe
(Carlene), of Austin; daughter, Julie (Mike) Biggerstaff, of Winona;
grandsons, Jared and Riley; granddaughter Sarah (AJ) Scherbring;
great-grandson Owen; brother, John (Adrienne), of Bloomington, Minnesota;
and many loving nieces and nephews.
Henry is preceded in death by his brother Bill; sister Patricia; three
children; Tracy (died 1992), Kim (died 1995) and Jeff (died 2005). Henry
will also be reunited with three infants whom he never had a chance to
meet who are buried in Austin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 4,
2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona with Rev. James Berning,
Rev. Robert Stamschror and Rev. Monsignor Thomas Hargesheimer officiating.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at Fawcett-Junker
Funeral Home, Winona with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral
home. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Visitation
Commons of St. Mary’s Church.

Florence May Hatleli, 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday morning,
December 29, 2013, at Our House Memory Care in Austin.
Florence was born January 26, 1927, in Albert Lea,
Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Edna (Solum) Johnson.
She attended school in Albert Lea and on August 23, 1944, was united
in marriage to Guy R. Roberts in Oceanside, California.
The couple had one daughter before Guy was killed serving his country in
World War II. In 1947, Florence married Elert Hatleli in Mason City, Iowa.
The couple were later divorced. Florence moved to Austin in 1954 and while
living there was employed as a waitress. She enjoyed dancing, roller
skating, sewing and gardening.
She is survived by five children, Karen (Jay) Carlson, and Linnea
(Carlos) Sanchez, all of Austin; Donna (LeRoy) King, of Cobbs Creek, Va.;
Robert (Rochelle) Hatleli and Mark Hatleli, all of Austin; son-in-law,
Miles “Mike” Irwin, of Austin; 19 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren
and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Arthur and Edna Johnson; first husband, Guy Roberts; daughter,
Judith Irwin; step-son, Bruce Hatleli; grandson, Brandon Dixon; son-in-law,
Randy Dixon; three brothers, Allen, Arthur and Robert Johnson and three

Leo C. Weis, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully, surrounded by
his family on Monday, December 30, 2013, at Comforcare Good Samaritan
Center, Austin. He was born August 4, 1924, in Perham, Minnesota, to
William and Saraphine (Altstadt) Weis. Leo grew up and attended school
in Perham. In the early 1940s, he moved to Austin and began work at
Hormel Foods Corp. He served his country in the United States Navy from
1942 to 1945, and then returned to Austin where he finished his career
with Hormel.
On August 3, 1946, Leo married Mary H. Dolan at Queen of Angels Catholic
Church in Austin. The couple had five children. A member of the American
Legion, Leo served as commander from 1968 to 1969, was an American Legion
funeral escort, and also was a bus driver for the American Legion Drum and
Bugle Corps. Leo belonged to Queen of Angels Catholic Church, the VFW, the
40-8 Club, and served on the Austin Industrial Park Development Committee.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and dancing.
Survivors include his children William (Kathy) Weis, of Kingman, Arizona;
Robert (Carol) Weis, of Austin; Patricia (David) Schmidt, of Austin; seven
grandchildren Molly, Katy, Bridget, Becky, Janelle, Anthony, Nikki; eight
great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis (Jim) Pfeffer, of Minneapolis;
brother-in-law, John Huber, of Rochester; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Weis

Roger Ray Trask, age 62, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died December
19, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Seattle Wash., of cancer. Local services

Roger Ray Trask, 62
Roger Ray Trask, 62, died on December 19, 2013, at the Veterans Hospital
in Seattle, Washington, from cancer.
Roger was born in Charles City, Iowa, to Raymond Trask and Ruth Trask
Collette on November 6, 1951. He attended school in Buckner, Mo., where his
father passed away, and then moved to Austin and graduated in 1971. He
then went into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He married Mary
Ross and had two children, Peggy Young and Valeri Declue. They divorced
and he then worked in Duluth, later moving to Tacoma, Wash., in 1994.
He found he had cancer in 2006, and has had several free years
until 2013, where he has been treated at the Veterans Hospital in Seattle.
He leaves his daughters, Peggy Young, and Valeri Declue; four
grandchildren; his mother, Ruth Collette; sister, Pamela (Darrell)
Meyer; and many nieces and nephews, friends both in Austin and Tacoma.
There will be no local service. He will be laid to rest at the Fort
Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

Chad F. Dennison 1973-2013
Chad F. Dennison, 40, of Lakefield, Minnesota, formerly of Austin,
Minnesota, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday afternoon,
December 28, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
He was born September 15, 1973, in Austin, the son of Frank W. and
Cheryl R. (Wilcox) Dennison. Chad grew up in Austin and attended Crane
Community Chapel as a young man. He lived and worked as a welder in many
towns in southern Minnesota. He enjoyed taking his kids fishing, listening
to music, tinkering on cars and fixing things.
Chad is survived by his mother, Cheryl (Dave) Stigney of Lakefield;
significant other, Amanda Zemke of Lakefield; four children, Miranda
Brede, Chantel Dennison, Haley Dennison and Cole Dennison; seven
brothers and sisters, Lisa (Paul) Sangineto, of Brownsdale, Minnesota;
Kristine (LaVerne) Maier, of Sargeant, Minnesota; Vicki (TC) Powell,
of White Water, Wis.; Laura (Bobby) Gladden, of Austin; Stephen (Kristi)
Dennison, of Winona, Minnesota; Katy (Scott) Brechtel, of Austin; Todd
Dennison, of New Ulm, Minnesota; and Melissa Root, of Austin; aunts

Joanne Marie (Titus) Cassidy 1931-2013
The funeral for Joanne Marie (Titus) Cassidy, 82, will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church
with Rev. Mark C. McNea officiating. A visitation will be held Thursday,
January 2, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass at St. Francis of
Assisi Catholic Church.
Joanne died Saturday, December 28, at Samaritan Bethany on Eighth where
she had resided for the last 13 months.
Joanne was born to Lloyd and Esther Titus on August 27, 1931, in
Austin, Minnesota. She graduated in 1949 from Pacelli High School.
After graduation, she completed her training as a medical technician
in Bismarck, N. Dakota, and went on to work in Ogden, Utah. She moved
back to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1954, where she worked at the Mayo
Clinic for several years until marrying Eugene Cassidy on June 6, 1959.
Joanne was actively involved in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic
Church where she was president of the Parish Council as well as president
of the Rosary Society. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading,
and traveling throughout the country with her husband. She was a devoted
wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she will be dearly
missed.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene; daughter, Kelly; son, Tim;
six grandchildren, Jesse (Jada); Megan (Adam); Emily; Janna; Jacob; and
Baily; and four great-grandchildren, Maddy, Noah, Lennon, and Palmer.
Joanne is also survived by her sister, Mary (Jerry) Wilde; three brothers,
Richard, Leonard (Charlotte), and Tom (Janet); and one sister-in-law,
Dorothy Fogarty.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Esther Titus;
sister-in-law, Irene Titus; brother-in-law, Ralph Fogarty, and brother-
and sister-in-law, Bob and Evelyn Kearney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to either the Samaritan
Bethany Resident Activity Fund or St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

2004 at her home in Le Roy.
Lillian is survived by her son, John (Margie) of Winona, and grandson,

Joseph (Jerry) Chopski, 85
Joseph (Jerry) Chopski, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday,
January 1, 2014, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
Joseph Gerald Chopski was born July 29, 1928, at Northfield, Minnesota,
the son of Joseph P. and Frances (Koperski) Chopski. Jerry left high school
to enlist in the U.S. Army. He returned to Minnesota after being discharged
and was married to Gladys Olhoeft at Waseca, Minnesota, on Oct. 18, 1949.
Jerry was employed as the shipping manager with the Weyerhaeuser
Company until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran
Church where he served as an usher for more than 25 years, a volunteer with
the Meals on Wheels program and a member of the Conservation Club. Jerry
was a lifelong member of both the American Legion and the VFW, and was a
member of the American Legion Color Guard and funeral escort. He was
appointed to and served on the Fire Commission for several years. He
served as the Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 124 and during his years
as Scout Master he received the Silver Scout Award, Silver Beaver Award
and the Lamb Award.
Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and the
Hormel Nature Center. He had a passion for his garden and lawn. Jerry
loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph P. and Frances Chopski
and an infant sister.
Jerry is survived by his wife Gladys Chopski, of Austin; daughter and
son-in-law, Nancy and Mike Waltz, of Allen, Texas; grandson and wife, Bret
and Katherine Waltz, of McKinney, Texas; grandson, Tyler Waltz, of Allen.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 9,
at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Todd Porting, AiM officiating. Interment
will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Austin Post 91
American Legion is in charge of military rites. Visitation will be at the
church on Thursday morning for one hour before the service. Clasen-Jordan
Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be designated to the donor's choice.

Mark Douglas Auringer 1961-2014
Mark Douglas Auringer, 52, of Austin, Minnesota, died unexpectedly
at his home on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
Mark was born in St. James, Minnesota, on May 5, 1961, to Eugene and
Lois (Olson) Auringer. He attended grade school at Central Lutheran and
was a graduate of Austin High School in 1979. He married Sandra
"Sandy" Rauen in Austin on his birthday in 1984. Mark worked
for Woodvale/REM for a total of 17 years and enjoyed befriending the
residents there. He then worked for Hormel Foods in the accounting
department as a clerk for the last 17 years.
Mark enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and spending time at
the Boundary Waters with his son Matthew. He was a member of Northwestern
Singers group. Mark, his father Eugene and his older brother, Brian was in
the group at the same time and that meant a lot to Mark. He loved music and
gardening. His father-in-law, “Red,” loved gardening together with Mark,
as Red spent his final years living at the Auringer residence. Mark was a
happy and proud father and was very excited to find out he was going to be
a grandfather to two grandbabies this coming summer.
Mark is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Austin; his parents, Eugene
and Lois Auringer, of Austin; son, Matthew Auringer and his significant
other Kareen, of Austin; daughter, Brittney (Brendon) Plowe, of Sturtevant,
Wis.; siblings, Brian (Paula) Auringer, of Mantorville, Minn.; Gail (Rodney)
Jensen, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Lynn (Greg) Handzel, of Andover, Minn.;
and Jason (Karla) Auringer, of Wentzville, Mo.; along with many nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at
St. Johns Lutheran Church with Rev. Tom Ogilvie officiating. Visitation
will be held 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Mayer Funeral Home
and again an hour before the funeral on Monday. Interment will follow
the funeral at Calvary Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
the St. Johns Radio Broadcast fund or the choice of the donor. Online

Donald R. "Ozzy" Osmonson 1932-2013
Donald R. Osmonson, 81, of rural Albert Lea, Minnesota, passed away on
December 31, 2013, at home on his farm.
Donald R. "Ozzy" Osmonson was born June 26, 1932, in Albert Lea,
Minnesota, to Rufus and Valda Osmonson. He was raised on the family
farm and attended Austin High School. In 1950, he entered service with
the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged
in June of 1953. Donald married Harriet C. Brown in October of 1953. They
started a family in 1954, and subsequently had seven children.
During his lifetime, Donald started working part-time at Sears Roebuck
and eventually worked full-time as a livestock buyer for Hormel. He was
stationed in Nebraska, Iowa, and returned to Preston, Minn., where he
opened the new station and from where he retired in 1993. Donald and
Harriet then moved to the family farm in Freeborn County.
During his time in the Preston/Lanesboro area, he farmed full-time
while working at Hormel. Upon retirement, he took up golfing and bowling,
as well as continuing his love for the outdoors and all things associated
with it. His biggest joy was spending time in his woodworking shop making
beautiful pieces of furniture for family and friends.
Donald is survived by his wife Harriet, of 60 years, sons; Jeff,
Patrick and Kenneth; and daughters, Brenda and Marcia.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas and daughter, Terese.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 3,
2014, at St. Augustine Church in Austin, Minn. Please, no flowers;
instead, if you wish, send a donation to a Christian based charity.
