Walter C. Tomhave

1914-2013

Walter C. Tomhave, 98, of Austin, Minnesota, died Dec. 2, 2013, at St. Marks Lutheran Home in Austin.

He was born December 6, 1914, in Hager City, Wisconsin, to John and Ella (Vagts) Tomhave. He attended rural schools in the area of Hager City and Red Wing, Minn. After school, he worked on his family’s farm and delivered milk around the Red Wing area and he participated in government work projects along the Mississippi River. He moved to Austin in 1939, where he began his 47 year career at the Geo. A. Hormel Company.

On June 9, 1940, he married Alice Thompson. Shortly after their marriage they moved to a house near the packing plant that would be their home for 70 years where they raised two boys and entertained many visitors. They moved to The Cedars of Austin on Dec. 15, 2010.

During his early years in Austin, he played roles in community theater and radio drama productions. From an early age, he was a singer and used that talent for weddings, church services and special events until he was in his 90s. He trusted Christ as his Lord and Savior and became an active member of First Baptist Church where he participated in special music, taught a variety of Sunday School classes and served as a deacon and a trustee for several years. After his retirement he spent hours planting flowers, painting and doing other tasks that called for his patient attention to detail. He worked to maintain his lawn and flower gardens, even cultivating a few tomato plants for Alice although he disliked tomatoes in almost any form except catsup. Walt loved the outdoors.

He enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He was a loyal sports fan, both rejoicing and suffering with the ups and downs of his favorite teams, whether it was the Austin Packers, the Vikings or the Twins. He enjoyed hunting ducks, pheasants, deer and turkeys especially with his sons or the young men who became his adopted sons. His community service included a 25-year stint as a member of the Police Civil Service Commission. Walt will be remembered as a servant of God, a loving husband and father, one who loved to tell a good story and a man of great loyalty and personal integrity.

Bonnie Lee (Twait) Grundmeier

1938-2013

Bonnie Lee Grundmeier, 75

A service to honor the life of Bonnie Grundmeier will be held at St. Johns Lutheran Church of Elkton, Minnesota, at 11 a.m. December 11, 2013, with the Rev Liz Erickson officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Johns Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bonnie Lee Grundmeier, 75, went home to be with our Lord on December 7, 2013, at Our House Memory Care in Austin, Minnesota. She will be spending Christmas in Heaven this year, an honor to have her as our angel as well as knowing she went home this time of year as Jesus Christ's birth was her favorite piece of history to celebrate.

Bonnie always listened to people, never left anyone out and had a real passion for serving God. She was well known and respected in the local community. She was a very caring and compassionate person, and always put the needs of others before her own. Her devotion to God was never hidden and anyone that met Bonnie knew the love she had for the Lord. She could often be seen in the church pews writing notes on the side of her bulletin for those things she wanted to remind herself and others about.

It was the simple things around her in life that she never took for granted, commenting daily how fortunate and thankful she was. Above all, Bonnie was absolutely devoted to her family, her friends and God. She was a mother who always involved herself in every detail of her son and daughter-in-laws life and could often be heard bragging about all of her grandchildren. She was a woman of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that would await her after her passing.

She was born on October 1, 1938, in Cylinder, Iowa, to Emmet and Mildred (Thompson) Twait. Bonnie graduated in 1956 from Elkton High School. After her graduation, she went with her friend Peggy to Ohio and worked at an Air Force base for about one year.

Bonnie married Larry Grundmeier in 1960 in Sargeant, Minnesota. They were later divorced. Bonnie was a member of St. Johns Church of Elkton, Minnesota. She wore many hats throughout her years of membership of St. Johns, from Council member to WELCA group, from her beloved Circle to being in the choir. She was also a member of the Adams-Dexter Red Hat group.

Bonnie worked at Northwestern Bank (now Wells Fargo) in Austin prior to going to work at Farmers State Bank of Elkton, where she was until she retired in 2001 after 42 years of dedication to her job. After her retirement, she then proceeded to pursue her next biggest passion as a representative for Primerica Financial Services. She was with Primerica until 2009 when her health would no longer allow her to work.

Bonnie was preceded in death by parents.

Bonnie is survived by her son, Todd (Gina) Grundmeier and her beloved grandchildren Wyatt, Raeann, Emma & Madison of Dexter, Minnesota; her siblings Denny (Pat) Twait of Kasilof, Alaska; Roger (Jeannie) Twait of Kasilof, Alaska; Barbara (Rich) Hemingway of Tonasket, Wash.; Lin (Ray) Abriola of Winchester, Va.; and Steve Twait of Scotia, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family would be preferred. Anyone who knew Bonnie, knew she was very conscientious about money and the family will be donating to some organizations as Bonnie would have loved, in her honor such as Alzheimers Association and St. Johns Church.
