TWO AUSTIN
MEN DIE IN
AIR CRASH
Hagen, Campbell
Victims in Fox Hunt
Near Spring Valley
Two Austin men were killed Saturday when their light plane crashed in an open field on the Elmer Billman farm one mile west of Spring Valley and about a mile east of the Mower county line.
Both Raymond T. Hagen, 26, 105 S. Jay, pilot, and James Campbell, 28, Austin Rt. 3, passenger, died instantly, of skull fractures and other injuries.
Dr. J. Nehring, Preston, Fillmore county coroner, said the men evidently had been hunting fox from the plane. A dead fox and a gun were found in the wreckage, he said.
Allen W. De Voe, aviation safety agent, Rochester civil aeronautics authority office, said apparently the plane went into a stall and spin at low altitude.
A Veteran pilot said two things could cause the stall and spin. The plane could louse air speed and go into a stall either by turning sharply or by pulling up sharply.
At high altitudes, a stall and spin aren't serious, the pilot said. At low altitude, however, the pilot doesn't have time to recover and the plane crashes.
However, De Voe said it was too early in his investigation to come to any definite conclusion. He said the investigation would continue.
Apparently no one saw or heard the crash. Dr. Nehring said, although Billman had been a plane circling overhead earlier.
At about 1:30 p.m., Billman looked out the window of his home. He saw a snowplow in the ditch of the road which runs past his farm. He drove out to see if he could help the plow crew.
On his way he spotted the wrecked plane in the field about half a mile south of the stalled snowplow.
Billman notified Dr. Nehring and Walter Kruegel, Fillmore deputy sheriff. Kruegel said the plane landed on its nose and bounced about 15 feet from the point of impact.
There were no obstructions in the field, he said, and there was plenty of room to land.
Hagen's watch stopped at 12:48 p.m. According to Glen Hovland, Austin airport manager, the two men had been in the air about half an hour when the accident occurred. They left the Austin airport sometime between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m., he said.
The plane, a Piper Cub owned by Hagen, was demolished. The engine was driven back into the cockpit where the men were sitting in tandem seats.
Rescuers had difficulty recovering the bodies from the wreckage.
Hagen, who had been flying for about three years, and held a private pilot's license. He had logged about 350 hours of flying time and last week took his written examination for his commercial license. The commercial license had not been issued. He owned the plane for about a year.
Campbell had been flying for about 1 and a half years. He held a student's license and had logged about 60 hours of flying time.
Ray Brown, St. Paul, state department of aeronautics inspector, said the crash definitely could not be attributed to motor failure. He said a piece of propeller was found about 100 feet from the plane, indicating the motor was turning over when the plane crashed. Brown denied reports that the motor switch was turned off.
L. L. Schroeder, state commissioner of aeronautics, St. Paul, said Hagen evidently was flying in violation of two laws -- one state and one federal.
He said Hagen did not have a federal permit to fly at levels below 500 feet. He also did not have a state department of conservation permit to hunt fox from the air.
The state permit is cleared through the state aeronautics commission, Schroeder said, and is issued only to thoroughly esperienced flyers. They must have at least 1000 hours of flying time with a prescribed minimum of that time in the type of plane they are to fly when hunting, he said.
Since 1949, Schroeder said, six Minnesotans have been killed in the three aerial fox hunting accidents and in each case the pilot didn't have the department of conservation permit. And in each case, he said, the accident was caused by the same thing -- a stall and spin at low altitude.
"Almost invariably those low-level accidents are fatal," Schroeder said. With enough altitude, he said, a plane will recover from a stall by itself. It usually takes from 100 to 300 feet for that recovery to be made.
One of the three fatal accidents occurred near Geneva in Freeborn county, on Feb. 11, 1950.
Funeral services for Hagen will be held Tuesday. An employee in the beef department at Geo. A. Hormel & Co., Hagen is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kay, 3; a son, David, 15 months; two sisters, Donna and Arlene, Austin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hagen, Adams; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Hobson, Lansing; and a grandmother, Mrs. Henry Hagen, Elkton.
Funeral services for Campbell will be held on Wednesday. Campbell had been operating the home farm nine miles southwest of Austin in Lyle township since the death of his father, Archie. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Lois, who will be three on Tuesday, and Janice, 15 months; His mother, Mrs. Laura Campbell; one brother, Vernon, Rt. 3, and a sister, Mrs. Dale Dice, Myrtle. His father, Archie Campbell, died four years ago today.

TWO AUSTIN
MEN DIE IN

Kate J. Wheeler 1843-1876
Death of Mrs. Kate J., wife of E.O. Wheeler, Esq.
Sudden Death
Last Monday at about five o'clock in the afternoon, Mrs. Kate J., wife
of E. O. Wheeler, Esq., of this city, remarked to the family that she would
dress for tea and immediately retired to the bath room. Not reappearing as
soon as she was expected one of the family went to her room and knocked,
but received no answer. The door was then tried and found bolted. Her
not answering excited alarm and the door was immediately forced open, and
Mrs. Wheeler was found in a sitting position with her head leaning forward
-- dead!
She had removed her dress and was evidently before the mirror washing.
She semed to have fallen or rather to have sunk down without a single
premonition of the change. A slight mark on the forehead is the only
indication of external injuryt sustained by the fall. From the time of
her withdrawal from the sitting room until she was discovered, not more
than an hour had elapsed, and yet she was dead! Physicians say that she
died of apoplexy, and express the opinion that her dissolution was
instantaneous -- affording her not even a momentary anticipation of
the spirit's departure. She had with her husband, just returned from
an extended tour of the east, and although wearied she was supposed to
be usually well.
About ten days ago she had an attack of dizziness, but she recovered
in a few minutes, and thought nothing more about it. Mr. Wheeler now
thinks it was a preliminary shock of paralysis. She was thirty-three
years old last month, and had been married about seven years.
She leaves two little children destined never to know the tenderness of
their mother's affection for them. Although measurably fond of society,
her heart was in her home and her family and it is there that her loss
will fall with the most crushing weight.
The obsequies took place at the house yesterday, being conducted by
Rev. Rice, of Rochester, assisted by Rev. Crist of this city. The remains
were taken to Oakwood for interment.
The words of Rec. Rice at the funeral of Mrs. Wheeler yesterday were
preculiarly appropriate. They . . . [redacted]
