Cheryl A. (Briggs) Clancy, 66, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota

Cheryl A. (Briggs) Clancy, 66, a beloved mother, grandma, sister and friend of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, formerly of Woodbury, Minnesota, passed away peacefully surrounded by family July 1, 2013, after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Cheryl is survived by her son, Matt (Jen) and grandchildren, Logan and Addison; brothers, Warren Briggs (Dona Klaehn) of Austin, Minn., and Charles Briggs (Phyllis Schulz) of Sheboygan Falls, Wis.; sister, Julie Briggs of Minnetonka, Minn.; loving partner of eight years, Larry DeVries and his children Loren (Kelly) DeVries, Rebecca (Adam) Omelianchuk, and Rachel DeVries (Nick Finberg); extended family including many cousins, nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 8 at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 1583 Radio Drive, Woodbury. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday July 7 at the new O’Halloran Murphy-Woodbury Funeral Home, 8700 Valley Creek Road, one block east of Radio Drive, Woodbury, and Monday at the church one hour preceding the service. Memorials preferred. Private burial will take place at Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

Helen Louise Herrick, 94 of Austin died on Tuesday July 2, 2013 at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin, Minnesota.

Helen was born on April 10, 1919 at Austin, Minnesota to Charles and Louise (Nelson) Hoffstater. The family moved to Calmer, Iowa in 1921 where she spent the next nine years making lifetime friendships. Helen graduated from Austin High School in 1936. After graduation she worked for two years in the office at the Hormel Company. She was employed by the Austin Public Schools as a secretary for 26 years.

Helen was married to Oliver Herrick on November 19, 1938. They were married for 72 years and had two sons James V. Herrick and Vincent J. Herrick.

Helen enjoyed her work and family. In her free time she enjoyed crocheting, following baseball and playing cards. She and Oliver also enjoyed traveling. They took several road trips and did some traveling in Europe.

Helen will be remembered lovingly by her family, son and daughter-in-law James and Mary Herrick; Judy Herrick Horton; grandchildren, James C. Herrick, Kimberly Herrick, Anne (Steve) Haes and Tom (Sadie) Herrick; great-grandchildren Katelyn and Emily Herrick and Thomas and Madison Herrick.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver, parents Charles and Louise Hoffstater, son Vincent John Herrick and grandson John Vincent.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Friday July 5th at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson officiating. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service on Friday morning. Memorials may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to the Karl Potach Pediatric Fund at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Austin.

Darla Lynn Dahmen, 54, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Darla was born December 14, 1958, in Austin to Earl and LaVonne (Skauge) Dahmen. Darla graduated from Austin High School and attended Riverland Community College. She worked for the Corporate Offices of Hormel. She loved traveling and was a loving mother and daughter to her family.

Darla is survived by her father; sister, Sherry Dahmen; brother, Larry Dahmen; and sons Preston Horton, Coniah Horton and Bronson Dahmen Horton.

A visitation will be held for Darla at Mayer Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013. Condolences may be left for the family at www.mayerfh.com.

Betty Rose (Day) Voigt died, 83, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home on Saturday, June 29, 2013, after a painful struggle with cancer. Her son, Tim, and daughter, Nancy, were by her side for weeks.

Betty was born August 5, 1929, to Arthur and Alta (Danley) Day in Brownsdale, Minnesota, where she grew up, the youngest of 10 children. She was married to Donald D. Voigt for 53 years, who passed away in 2003. Betty and Don moved to Yuma, Arizona, in 1960, where they raised their children, and owned a successful dry cleaning business, and later a laundromat. They also owned the local Tendermaid Sandwich Shop in Austin for a few years after they returned to Minnesota. Betty worked many years at the Austin Senior Center, weaving hundreds of rugs.

She loved and nurtured many houseplants, and tended to numerous birds that arrived at her feeder daily. Betty enjoyed watching car races on TV as often as she could. She was very frugal, practical and creative throughout her life. She was fiercely independent to the very end. Betty found great joy in her relationship with her two grandsons. They both loved her and kept their communications frequent. Nothing pleased her more than receiving a phone call from the "boys." As she would want, her oldest grandson, Josh, will bagpipe Amazing Grace at her private memorial service, just as he did for his grandfather Donald.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Krage; son in-law, Chris Krage; her son, Tim Voigt; and her grandsons, Josh and Bryan Krage. She is the last of the Day family. Betty will be missed and was loved by her family. Her soul is released to God. Her family would like to thank the kind nurses, aides, Hospice, and Nancy Donahue who offered care and support for Betty and her children.

Myrel E. Bauers, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Myrel Evelyn Brandes was born December 20, 1919, in Albert Lea to Julius and Belle (Schneider) Brandes. She attended grade school in District No. 20 for one year and then transferred to District No. 22. In her first year at Albert Lea High School, her mother had a stroke so Myrel left school to take over running the household.

On September 2, 1939, she was united in marriage to Harold W. Bauers in Albert Lea. The couple raised two children. Myrel and Harold lived in Freeborn County until moving to Austin in April 1989. Harold passed away in 1990. An active member of Moscow Lutheran Church, Myrel worked as a cook and a waitress. She enjoyed socializing with people at church, feeding her birds, camping with her family and dancing.

Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Kruse of Ossian, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Sandy Bauers of Stewartville and Sandy’s daughter, Leah, of Rochester, Betty Bale and her son, Lenny, of Rochester; nephew, Larry (Vickie) Waltz of Corning; faithful friends Tom Dearmin and Paul Neilsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Belle Brandes; her husband, Harold Bauers; son Richard Bauers; sister- and brother-in-law, Ivy and Archie Waltz; sister- and brothers-in-law, Lois and Herbert Bauers, Harry Bauers and Ernest K. Miller; sister-in-law, Freida Miller; and niece, Arlene (Waltz) Lunning.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Moscow Lutheran Church with the Rev. Cheryl Szabo officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Obituary

Kenneth Dean Highet, age 72 of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin. He was born on July 17, 1940 in Austin, Minnesota to Kenneth and M. Lorraine (Swenson) Highet. Ken grew up in Austin and graduated from Austin High School, joining the United States Air Force in 1958 where he served his country for eight years. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, Anchorage, Alaska, Sacramento, California, Duluth, Minnesota, Saigon, Vietnam, and Klamath Falls, Oregon. Ken received a business degree from Moorhead State University.

On November 18, 1961 Ken married Barbara Jane Monahan in Austin, the same year that the Ken doll was introduced to the Barbie doll. He spent his career in the banking industry, working at a Savings & Loan in Oregon, Moorhead State Bank, and Sterling State Bank in Austin, where he lived for the last 20 years. A member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, Ken served as a Trustee there. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and Shrine. As a member of Blue Lodge, York Rite Commandery, Ken received the Hiram Award for his work in the Blue Lodge and the Knights Templar Cross of Honor from the Commandery. Golfing, fishing, and woodworking were among Ken's favorite pastimes. He also loved to help at the Shrine Circus.

Survivors include his wife Barb, of Austin, Minnesota; mother, M. Lorraine Highet, also of Austin; his children: Curtis (Diana) Highet of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Craig (Darlene) Highet of Zumbrota, Minnesota, Bryan Highet of Shakopee, Minnesota, and daughter-in-law Laura Highet of Shakopee; his grandchildren Rachel (Chris) Toland, Megan Highet, Christina (Dane) Halverson, Keith Highet, Emily Highet, Kyle Hughes, Ayden Highet and Isabella Highet; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Derek Toland; brother, David (Della) Highet of Nicholasville, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Alan Highet, his grandparents, and his brother Duane Highet.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Rev. Glenn Monson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday July 8, 2013 at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, with a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. The American Legion Post 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1216 are in charge of military honors. Karen Ann Helgeson, 60, of Iowa, died July 3, 2013, in Iowa, from a heart attack.

Karen was born September 5, 1952, in Austin, Minnesota, to Kenneth and Norma (Johnson) Legried. She graduated high school in Austin in 1971 and was a homemaker. Karen loved decorating, crafts and floral arrangements. She was always caring, loving and full of laughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelly (Jason) Kersey; two sons, Craig (Lynn) Helgeson and Scott (Abby) Helgeson; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church with Pastor Lydia Mittag officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Grandview Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ann Irwin of Bloomington, Minnesota, died in Minneapolis.

Shirley was born November 29, 1938, in Mower County, Minnesota, to Melvin and Martha (Fairbanks) Newkirk. She married Charles "Charlie" Irwin. She retired as an office administrator for Hancock Fabrics.

Survivors include her children, Cathy (Ulie) Seal, Church Irwin, Cindy (Duane) Haddick and Chris (Phil) Wolf; sisters, Thelma Givan and Donna McCullough; brothers, Jim (Shirley), Ray (Nylene) and Marv Newkirk; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Charlie.

Gill Brothers in Bloomington is in charge of arrangements. A service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Redemption at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at 927 E. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington, with Pastor Robert W. Nowak officiating. A visitation will be held half an hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will follow. Jack Wayne Beddow, 66, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, died on Friday, July 5, 2013, surrounded by the love of his family.

Jack was born April 1, 1947, in Forest City, Iowa, to Donald and Charlotte (Cooke) Beddow. In 1959, he moved with his parents to a farm north of Chester, Iowa. Farming was he and his dad’s greatest love. He attended school in LeRoy, Minn., and married Jolene Noe on December 29, 1963, in Lime Springs, Iowa. They have two children, Jeffrey Scott and Jill Annette. They farmed in the Lime Springs and Chester area until 1986, when they both started work at Hormel Foods, retiring in 2011.

Jack was everyone's "fixer." There was nothing he couldn't figure out a way to make work.

He enjoyed many trips out west with Jeff and Jill, and fishing on Lake of the Woods. When the grandchildren (six of them) came along, he had great joy in snowmobiling, biking and sleep overs at Grandpa and Grandma's. He loved the hours spent with them. He and Jolene's greatest enjoyment was snowmobiling "Up North" - Gunflint Trail, Aspen Lodge. Mark and his crew made it a great home away from home - The Trail Center, Hungry Jack Lodge, miles and miles of trails.

He was preceded in death by his father Don Beddow and mother-in-law Fern Noe. He will be sorely missed by his wife Jolene of Brownsdale, Minnesota; son, Jeff (Judi) Beddow and children Justin, Josh, Jarod and Janell of Dodge Center, Minnesota; daughter, Jill (Lee) Gooder and children Shelley and Zach; mother, Charlotte Beddow of Chester, Minn.; father-in-law, Harold Noe Sr. of Spring Valley, Minnesota; brothers, Tom Beddow of Chester and Jim (Carmen) Beddow of Stewartville, Minnesota; sister Deb Driscall of Kasson, Minn; in-laws Harold (Carrie) Noe Jr. of Cresco, Iowa, Bert (Joy) Noe of Rochester, Minnesota, Marolyn (Merlynn) Hetrick of Texas, Carolyn Eddy of Wyoming, Judy (David) Jacobson of Cresco and Jan (Bob) Behnken of South St. Paul, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews that always thought of him as their "Hero."

U.S. Veteran

Ronald Franklin Thompson, 83, of Fort Myers, Florida, died on June 9, 2013, at Hope Hospice.

Ron was born on February 3, 1930, in Austin, Minnesota, one of 12 children of Melvin Edward and Alice (Albright) Thompson.

Ron met his wife, Lorene, during his high school years in Austin, Minnesota. They were married May 5, 1951, just after he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1951 to 1954, and was a Korean War veteran. He worked in the insurance industry while living in Austin. Upon moving to Rochester, Minnesota., he was district manager for H&R Block for 25 years. Ron retired at age 56 due to health problems.

After retirement, Ron and his wife moved to Fort Myers. He was a member of Whiskey Creek Country Club where he enjoyed golf and bridge with his many friends. He loved following sports of any kind. Ron was a member of the Elks Club for many years and belonged to Peace Lutheran Church in Fort Myers from its inception.

Ron is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorene; four children: Craig (Jennifer) Thompson of Austin, Carol Weber of Fort Myers, Mark Thompson of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Scott (Crystal) Thompson of Carefree, Arizona; grandchildren: Christie Winter, Tyler Weber, Laurie Thompson Jones, Aaron Dill and Zachary, Jonathon, Ryan, Taylor, Merit and Killian Thompson; three great-grandchildren; four siblings: Daniel (Carol) Thompson of Fairfax, Minnesota, Wanda (Bud) Overby of Austin, Nancy (Vern) Tripp and Judith Moon of Layton, Utah.

He was predeceased by his son, James, in 1992; his parents, Melvin and Alice; and seven siblings, Tommy, Benny, Lowell, Dick, David, Theo and Sandy.

A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota, Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m. Friends are invited to call one hour prior to the service. Melvin Bernard King, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Adams Health Care Center.

Melvin was born March 6, 1926, in Riceville, Iowa to George and Eva (Johnson) King. On March 20, 1944, he married Maxine Spellman and they had two sons. Melvin proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. After the war he worked as a laborer for Hormel Foods until 1984.

Melvin was an avid fisherman with his neighbor Jack and they spent many hours catching Catfish and Northern Pike. Later, he spent time fishing on Cannon Lake with Brad and Nancy and grandson Patrick. He also enjoyed deer hunting along with Brad and Patrick at his sister’s farm in Harmony, Minn.

In his later years he and Brad fished at the channel in Albert Lea, Minnesota, where they caught more Walleyes than they ever did. Melvin spent many hours sitting in his recliner in his garage preparing fishing poles for his next outing. He was a collector of glassware, guns, fishing reels and rods and he enjoyed flea markets and gun shows.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother Marrold; and sisters Vesta Bergland, Wilma Bell, Marcella Murphy, Irene Weber and Roberta Jenson. He is survived by Gary (Shirley) King, Bradley (Nancy) King, three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

A funeral Mass for Melvin King will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with Father Dale Tupper celebrating the Mass. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Austin. There will be visitation one hour prior to the mass at Queen of Angels and on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mayer Funeral Home. Steven James Weber, 53, died July 7, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Survivors include his son, Joe; daughter, Jenna; grandson Brady; parents, Jerome and Dorothy Weber; brothers Larry (Cindy), Gary (Kathy) and Mike (Carol); sisters Lana (Denny) Prantner and Judy Jacobson; 15 nieces and nephews; and 21 great-nieces and -nephews.

Donald Eugene Morrison, age 84 of Winona, Minnesota, and formerly of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at Tower Light Hospice Care in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

He was born June 15, 1929 in Austin, Minnesota, to Harold and Marie (Schreier) Morrison. He graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 1947, and from the University of St. Thomas in 1951 with a B.A. degree in History. At St. Thomas, Don was a member of the 1948 St. Thomas University football team that played in the Cigar Bowl.

Donald married Janice M. Reuter on June 15, 1954 at St. Boniface Church in Waumandee, Wisconsin. Janice passed away on November 20, 1982. He served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954. On July 26, 1991, Donald married Marianne (Breza) Rice in Winona, Minnesota. He was a member of St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie, St. Stanislaus in Winona, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He spent most of his career as a banker, serving as president of the 1st National Bank in Blooming Prairie.

A very active member of his community and church, Don was a founding member of the Prairie Manor Care Center, and was proud of his involvement with the Polish Museum in Winona. Recently the museum dedicated the "Morrison Annex" in his honor. In 2010, he was inducted into the Blooming Prairie Sports Hall of Fame. Don’s favorite pastimes were golfing, playing cards, dancing, sporting events, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Marianne Morrison of Winona, Minnesota; sons Paul (Mary Jo) Morrison of Edina, Minnesota, and James (Jean) Morrison of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; daughter Mary Ann Amundson of Minneapolis; step-sons Russell Rice of Rochester, Minnesota, and Ted Rice of Winona; sister Margaret (Billy) Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, brother John (Edee) Morrison of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren, and seven step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Morrison; his first wife Janice; a brother and a sister in infancy; and by his sister, Joanne Van Wyck.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013 at St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, with Father Paul Breza officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. A Rosary service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday. Interment will be in St. Columbanus Catholic Cemetery. Military rites by American Legion Post 52 and V.F.W. Post 878. David Loren Nack, age 78 of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, July 8, 2013 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He was born November 26, 1934 in Austin, Minnesota, to Melbourne and Bedelia (Meyer) Nack. While attending Austin Catholic Schools, David worked as a mechanic. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years. After his discharge, he worked as a postman and then at Hormel Foods Corporation for 30 years.

After his retirement from Hormel, he worked at Wal-Mart from 2008 until his death. On September 13, 1958, David was united in marriage to Gwen McClary. They were married for 54 years. Dave was a very talented wood carver. Two of his bear carvings are on display in Austin, one at the arena and the other by the downtown pool.

Survivors include his wife Gwen Nack of Austin; his daughters Janni Donovan (Jeff Moe) of Austin and Jamie (Brian) Rogness of Emmons, Minnesota; his son Peter Nack of Austin; one granddaughter Rachel Donovan of Austin and grandsons Riley Donovan of Austin and Carter and Cooper Rogness of Emmons; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, great grandnieces and nephews, friends, and Wal-Mart family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Melbourne and Bedelia Nack, his son Bradley David Nack, his in-laws Glen "Pete" McClary and Irene McClary, his sister Joan Austin and brother-in-law John Austin, and sister-in-law Marit Nack.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Rev. Dr. Stephen DeFor officiating. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, immediately preceding the service. Military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post 91 and V.F.W. David Loren Nack, 78, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Obituary

Robert F. Ingersoll, Sr., age 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center, Austin. He was born July 26, 1924 in Austin, to Frank and Beulah (Peake) Ingersoll. A 1944 graduate of Austin High School, Bob began working nights as a laborer for Hormel Foods Corporation during his senior year. He worked there until his retirement in 1982. From 1946-1949, he served his country in the United States Air Force.

On February 11, 1950, Robert was united in marriage to Caroline Schroeder at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin. She passed away in 1975. In December of 1979, Bob married Vera Joel at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Vera passed away in 1987. Bob enjoyed camping, fishing, doing yard work, and gardening. He was especially proud of his tomato crops. A member of the American Legion and St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Bob enjoyed music and spending time with his family. In 2013, he moved to Comforcare.

Survivors include his two sons, Robert Ingersoll Jr. of Austin and William G. (Mary) Ingersoll of Farmer City, Illinois; his stepsons, Phillip (Debbie) Erickson of Austin and Eric (Judy) Erickson of Marshalltown, Iowa; seven grandchildren and thirteen step grandchildren; special friend Elizabeth "Betty" Sackmaster of Onalaska, Wisconsin; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Beulah Ingersoll, his first wife Caroline, his second wife Vera, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Elizabeth Endicott officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday July 14 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, with military rites by American Legion Post 91. The family prefers that memorials be directed to St. Olaf Church. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.

Larry Gene Dunn, 70, Wasilla, Alaska

Larry Gene Dunn, 70, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Wasilla, Alaska, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

Larry was born February 20, 1943, in Austin, Minnesota, to Loren and Anna (Florentz) Dunn. He graduated from Austin High School in 1961. Larry received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

When Larry lived in Austin, he was a butcher at Zip’s Market and for the Red Owl grocery store. He also worked at Weyerhaeuser. After moving to Alaska, he was employed by the state of Alaska. During this time he became a journeyman electrician, retiring in 1993. After his retirement, he was a teacher's assistant at his son's pre-school and grade school for seven years.

Larry had many interests. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, master gardener and builder.

Larry is survived by his son, Glen, Anchorage; two brothers, Mervin (Bonnie) Dunn, Rockford, Illinois, and Ed (Diana) Dunn, Lakewood, Colorado; three sisters, Harriet Swartz of Glendale, California, Darlene Dillavou of Kasota, Minnesota, and Teresa (Russell) Slowinski of Lyle, Minnesota; brother-in-law Gary Morem (Cincinnati, Ohio); numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Loren and Anna Dunn, sister Doris Morem, and brothers-in-law Jack Swartz and Wayne Dillavou.

A memorial gathering was held at Larry's home in Wasilla on Friday, June 28, 2013. Larry's inurnment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Some of his ashes will be scattered in Alphabet Hills, one of his favorite hunting areas in Alaska.

Betty Lou Leeper, 88, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Betty was born February 1, 1925, in Austin, Minnesota, to Axel and Minnie (Orr) Olson. Betty graduated high school in Austin. She worked at Hormel Foods for a number of years, then worked at the Brownsdale Elementary School as a teacher's aide for 17 years. Betty finished her working career at IBI Data in Brownsdale.

Betty married Fay Leeper on July 5, 1947, in Brownsdale.

Survivors include her children, Kathy Leeper, Brownsdale, Steven Leeper, Brownsdale, Fay "Baldy" Leeper, Rochester; grandchildren, Kayla Leeper, Mantorville, Minnesota, Elle Leeper, LeRoy, Minnesota, Beth Leeper, LeRoy; a niece and two nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, son, two brothers and parents.

Lawrence Eugene "Larry" Grinstead 1932-2013

Lawrence Eugene "Larry" Grinstead, 80, died July 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by loved ones following a long battle with cancer.

Larry was born on August 31, 1932 in Osage, Iowa to John and Corinne (Morse) Grinstead. After graduating from the Orchard High School, he joined the U.S. Army serving in Korea from 1953-1955. Larry married Barbara Balsley on June 23, 1957. He received Bachelor and Master's degrees in Animal Husbandry from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, and worked in the feed business for many years. He moved his family to a farm near Austin in 1973 where he and his son, Michael, eventually designed and built Meadow Greens Golf Course.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and he belonged to the American Legion. Larry took great delight in his grandchildren. His favorite pastimes were golfing, traveling, hunting, reading, going to casinos, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, gardening and socializing with the patrons of the golf course. He will be remembered for his quick wit and his love and devotion to his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Corinne Grinstead; three brothers Jerry, Bill and Ronnie and one sister, Cynthia.

Larry is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter and son-in-law: Merry (Joe) Wilner, Canon City, Colorado; son and daughter-in-law: Michael (Lynn) Grinstead, Austin, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Briana (Logan) Goskesen, Noah and Riley Grinstead, Taylor and Alex Regnier; two step grandchildren: Jacqui and Jenna Wilner; brothers: Donald Grinstead, Lewiston, Idaho, James Grinstead, Osage, Iowa, Richard Grinstead, Tucson, Arizona and David Grinstead, Lewiston, Idaho; sisters: Dorine “Suzi” Thurneau, Osage, Iowa, Ruth Johnson, Riceville, Iowa, Alice Turpin-Grinstead, Edmond, Oklahoma, and Lynda Retterath, Eagan, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 16th at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Marilee A. Benson officiating. Interment will be at Orchard Cemetery in Orchard, Iowa with Austin Post #91 American Legion in charge of military rites. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at the church on Tuesday morning for one hour before the service.

Richard E. "Dick" Dahlgren, 85 of Austin, Minnesota, died on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

Richard Ellis was born on September 18, 1927 in Galt, Iowa to Oscar and Gladys (Hickok) Dahlgren. He graduated from Austin High School in 1945 and attended Austin Junior College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Richard was a senior system analyst with Hormel Foods. Richard married Dorothy Schilling on July 21, 1951 in Beaumont, TX. They were married for 40 years and had four children together. Dorothy passed away on August 26, 1991. He married Donna Thomsen on September 4, 1993 at First United Methodist Church.

Richard was a member of First United Methodist Church, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Elks, Austin Country Club and American Legion.

He loved golfing, traveling, woodworking, playing cards and dancing. Richard enjoyed remodeling projects around the house and he loved to spend time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Gladys Dahlgren, wife Dorothy Dahlgren, brothers Ken Dahlgren and Burr Dahlgren, and sister O'Dana Bruns.

Richard is survived by his wife Donna Thomsen Dahlgren, Austin, Minnesota; sons and daughters-in-law: Keith and Cathy Dahlgren, Kissimmee, Florida, Scott Dahlgren, Rochester, Minnesota, Steve and Roseanne Dahlgren, Madison, Wisconsin; daughter and son-in-law: Diane and Tim Gabrielson, Austin, Minnesota; grandchildren: Melissa Gabrielson, Rochester, Minnesota, Jason (Katie) Gabrielson, Austin, Minnesota, Michael (Angela) Dahlgren, Rosemount, Minnesota, Bradley Dahlgren, Minneapolis, Minnesota; one great granddaughter: Emma Gabrielson, Austin, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.

Per Richard's request, there will be a private family memorial service at a later date.

Howard Franklin Simmons, 93 of Austin, died peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, July 12, 2013, at Golden Living West Nursing Home in Rochester, Minn.

Howard’s health decline began after fracturing his back in his Austin Chauncy Apartment shortly after a family celebration of his 93rd birthday on Sept. 5, 2012. After home health care and some time in the Mayo Clinic Health System - Austin hospital, he moved to the Golden Living nursing home on Oct. 21, 2012, to be closer to his family for the duration of his life. He sustained a broken hip in April of this year, and his health rapidly declined after that.

Prior to these 10 months of decline and since his beloved wife, Mary, had died in December 2004, Howard had led a active life filled with visits with family/friends, church attendance, driving locally, doing his own housekeeping, playing cards, reading history books, and following the Minnesota Twins on TV.

Howard was born September 5, 1919, at Bancroft (Kossuth County), Iowa, to Marcus and Helen (Meyer) Simmons. He attended St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Bancroft Public High School in 1936 in a class of 13 students. He played shortstop on the school's baseball team, and this remained a favorite sport across his lifetime. For five years, he worked locally for Welp's Chicken Hatchery, monitoring operations during the night shift and driving a truck to the markets in Chicago where the chickens were sold.

He always said that "it was a biggest good decision of his life to have come to Austin," because of every personal and family opportunity which followed. He moved to Austin with his friend Jim Wempe in 1941 to begin working at the Geo A. Hormel company, primarily in the pork trim department. He retired from Hormel in 1981, having worked there for 40 years. He served in World War II in the south Pacific in the Army's 706th tank battalion in Siapan, Okinawa, and the Phillipines. His service is memorialized with a brick in the Veteran's Memorial in downtown Austin.

Before Howard left for overseas in World War II, he married Mary Louise Gardner on June 16, 1944, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, Iowa. Mary served at the dietitian at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin while he was overseas. When he returned, they build their home on First Avenue Northwest, became active members of St. Augustine Parish, and had three children. These happy years were filled with scouting activities, family auto travel and camping, gardening, home remodeling, playing cards, genealogy investigations, many trips to their wooded property at Mille Lac Lake, and socializing with friends.

Howard and Mary's three children survive: Joanne (Annie) of Minnetonka, Minnesota, William (Bill) of Rochester, Minnesota, and Beverly of Concord, Mass. In addition, he is survived by daughter-in-law Jan (Bill) of Rochester; son-in-law Steve (Bev) of Concord, Mass.; and grandchildren Jalil Saab of Minnetonka; Erin Simmons (Toby) Taylor and Kelsey Simmons (Jon) Hawley of Rochester. Four great-grandchildren survive: Ella (nearly 6), Lilli (nearly 2), and newborn identical twin girls who arrived on July 9, Yonina Elaine (Nina) and Yesima Leigh (Yesi), all of Rochester.

He was proceeded in death by both of his parents, his brother Paul, his sisters Loretta and Marge, and his in-laws Walter and Clara Gardner, and his brother-in-law, Joseph Gardner.

A funeral mass with be celebrated for Howard at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be visitation on Tuesday, July 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Mayer Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery next to his wife, Mary. A luncheon at the church for family and friends will follow at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the St. Augustine Church basement.

Darlene Kathyrn Hanson, age 88 of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, July 15, 2013 at Comforcare.

Darlene was born on a farm near Grand Meadow, Minnesota, on June 8, 1925 to Olaf and Nellie (Wead) Paulson. She attended Austin High School. On January 19, 1945 she married Albert Hanson in Northwood, Iowa.

Darlene was an Avon representative for over 40 years. She helped organized the "partyline" club, which played cards once a month. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Church of Christ as well as an active member of the Midwest Gem and Mineral Society. She was a very active member of the CB Radio Community, where she was known as "Gypsy."

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert, sister and brother-in-law Leona and Wayne Hansen, son-in-law VerDean Johnson, brother-in-law Adolph Dockham and nephews.

Darlene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Diane Hanson, Ramsey, Minnesota; a daughter, Latisha Johnson, Welch, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Kenneth Hanson, Jeffrey Hanson, Robert Hanson, Daniel Johnson, Amy Johnson, Pamela Small; great-grandchildren: Kyle Hanson, Alex Hanson, Tyler Hanson, Jack Hanson, Sophia Hanson, Oban Johnson, Jura Johnson, Clayton Johnson, Reilly Johnson, Mitchell Small, Abigail Small, Deanna Small; great-great-grandson: Wesley Hanson; brother, Fred Paulson; sister, Betty Dockham; and nieces and nephews.

Joyce Fern VanCamp, 73, of Rose Creek, Minnesota, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Adams Health Care Center.

She was born September 26, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Herman and Fern (Trierwiler) Hemgren. Joyce was raised on a farm in Anoka, Minnesota along with two brothers. She moved to Austin and married Virgil VanCamp in 1963. They had three children together and fostered many children for nineteen years.

Joyce enjoyed gardening, sewing and making crafts. She also enjoyed family time and getting together with friends. Joyce was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. In 2008 she moved to the Adams Health Care Center due to Parkinson's Disease.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Charles Hemgren.

William R. "Bill" Sayles, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, went to be with the Lord on July 9, 2013. Born January 15, 1938, in Austin, Minnesota, he was a longtime resident of Huson, Missouri. He served in the Army. He retired after many years of working for Missoula Cartage. In recent years he has enjoyed being the ranch manager at The Check Point Ranch. In fire seasons he drove a water truck for Leading Edge Aviation.

We will always remember him as a master of all trades, for his love of nature, his compassion for animals, his wonderful sense of humor and his true joy for life. Over the years he has touched us all. He will forever be in our hearts.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, MaryEllen Sayles of Huson; his children, Diane Thornton and her husband Rob of Kennewick, Washington, Scott Sayles and his wife Diane of Spokane, Missouri, Kent Sayles and his wife Emily of Missoula, Missouri, seven grandchildren, Mathew Piatt and Jennae Piatt of Kennewick, Jason Sayles and Brian Sayles of Spokane, Derek Fenton-Sayles and his wife Nickie, Shawna Sayles and her husband Charlie Dodd, Scott W. Sayles of Missoula. He is also survived by his two brothers and their families, Robert Sayles and his wife Marilynn of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Creighton Sayles and his wife Marcia of Florence, and many nephews, nieces and loving friends.

Memorial services were held Sunday, July 14, at the Grand Menard campground, one mile past the Nine Mile Ranger Station, from 3 to 7 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the Missoula Food Bank and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Faye Marie Hoffman 1936-2013

Faye M. Hoffman, 76, of Austin, died at her home on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

Faye Marie Flessner was born October 30, 1936, in Clay Center, Nebraska, to John and Cleo Flessner. Faye graduated from high school in 1955 and was employed with the Clay County Clerk's Office.

Faye met her future husband at her twin sister's wedding. Faye was united in marriage to Harold L. Hoffman on October 12, 1961, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska.

Faye was a busy homemaker raising four boys. She also worked outside the home as a house cleaner. She enjoyed reading, walking, cooking and baking. Faye was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cleo Flessner and her husband, Harold Hoffman.

Faye is survived by her sons: Wayne Hoffman, Austin, Minnesota, Bruce Hoffman, Westlake Village, California, Glenn (Dawn) Hoffman, Farmington, Minnesota, and Larry Hoffman, Apple Valley, Minnesota; grandchildren: Timothy Hoffman, Amanda Hoffman, Colin Hoffman and Sawyer Hoffman; twin sister, Freda (Rev. Denise Larae Benson, 58, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, July 15, 2013, at Centegra Hospital, Woodstock, Illinois.

She was born September 2, 1954, in Austin, Minnesota, to Lawrence V. and Dorothy M. (Johnson) Benson. A 1973 graduate of Austin High School, Denise entered the United States Air Force following graduation and met her future husband, Gary Emch, during her military service. The couple married in Spokane, Wa. and resided in various places throughout the United States and Canada. Gary and Denise were married for 18 years.

Denise eventually returned to Austin to care for her parents. She spent most of her career as a certified occupational therapist assistant, and worked at Sacred Heart Assisted Living as a nurse's aide. She recently received her Bachelor of Science degree. A member of the American Legion Post 91, Denise enjoyed gardening, shopping, sewing, crafts, and spending time with friends and family.

Survivors include her son Sean Emch of Woodstock, Illinois, and her daughter Laura (Niklas) Lifors of New York City; four grandchildren Ryan, Evan, Alex, and Rachael; three brothers Tom Benson, Bill (Pam) Benson, and Paul Benson, all of Austin; her niece Maggie; aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Dorothy Benson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Rev. Karl Dalager officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment will be in Red Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Austin, with military honors by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy, Minn. and one hour prior to the service at church.

Keith Dewayne Ahrens, 69, was born October 26, 1943, in Cherokee, Iowa to Ruth (Puhrmann) and Frank Ahrens. Keith died as the result of an auto accident on July 16, 2013, near Lime Springs, Iowa.

Keith grew up on area farms in northwest Iowa and attended elementary school there. In 1951, Kieth and his family moved to a farm near Ostrander, Minn. He attended country school through the sixth grade, entered seventh grade at LeRoy-Ostrander High School, and graduated in 1961. Keith received his auto mechanic training at Austin Area Vocational School. He worked as an auto mechanic in Ostrander and for Regan Motor Sales in LeRoy, Minn. He operated the 66 station and DX stations in LeRoy before entering into partnership with Tom Hovde at the LeRoy Auto Clinic. Keith retired in 2008. After retiring, Keith continued to enjoy hunting, fishing, truck and tractor pulls, and car shows.

He spent many happy hours on "the farm" and working on old tractors. Keith had a large gun collection and was a reloader and amateur gunsmith. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with family members and giving the grandgirls tractor rides.

Keith and Dianne (Daily) were married September 5, 1966 and resided in LeRoy, Minnesota for 46 years.

Keith is survived by his spouse, Dianne, daughters and sons-in-law, Kathlene and Tim Domaille of Rochester, Minn. and Kristine and Terry Tucke of LeRoy, Minn., and granddaughters Brittany and Brianna Tucke. Other survivors include a sister and brother-inlaw, Karen and Jerry Knudson-Ibberson of Ellendale, Minn., a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Diane Daily of Austin, Minn., and nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Frank Arhens (1971), mother Ruth (2006), stepfather Emmet Berhow (2004), nephew Robby Knudson (1986), and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Warren Wenzel was born March 5, 1935, in Eureka, South Dakota. He grew up in Austin, Minnesota, and graduated from Austin High School in 1953. He attended Austin Junior College, graduating in 1955. That same year, Warren married Joanne Guyette in Austin. They raised three children together.

Warren was a member of the National Guard, and also worked in sales. Warren was very proud of his children, even more so, his grandchildren. He enjoyed singing, woodworking and spending time at the lake.

Warren passed away at Sanford Health in Fargo, on Saturday, July 13, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Julie (Jim) Knutson, and Diane (Matt Anderson) Ross; son, Steven (Kriston) Wenzel; six grandchildren, Thomas and Randy Knutson; Matthew and Benjamin Wenzel; and Gabriel and Grayce Ross; brothers, Rodney Wenzel and David (Sharon) Wenzel; and sisters, Arlene (Bob) Borchard, and Judith (Don) DeYoung.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Viola Lulubell “Vi” Coyle, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin.

Vi was born November 24, 1919, in Hector, Minnesota, to August and Gertrude Lidberg. She married Leo Coyle and was later divorced.

Vi worked at the military post office in San Francisco, Calif., Hormel Foods, St. Augustine School and cafeteria, Big Bob’s Skillet, and the B & E Grill. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, baking cookies for her grandchildren, crossword puzzles, and sitting on the porch having coffee.

Vi was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, the ladies church unit and quilting club.

Survivors include her three children, Leo (Aletha) Coyle, Austin, Shirley Coyle, Austin, Deb Potter, Buffalo, Minn.; four grandchildren, Christopher Coyle (fiancée Stephanie), Austin, Travis (Jackie) Coyle, Austin, Tom Potter (fiancée Shawana), Buffalo, Zach (Nicole) Potter, Buffalo; 11 great-grandchildren, Collin, Alex, Ethan and Adalyn Coyle, all of Austin, Searra, Alana, Trevor, Avery, Chelsey, Mackenzie and Anthony Potter, all of Buffalo; a brother, LeRoy (Mavis) Lidberg, Fremont, Nebraska.

Mrs. Edna Hileman, 82, formerly of 153 Linwood Ave., died of complications of age at 5:15 p.m. Sunday at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home where she had resided the past year.

A native of Austin, Minnesota, she was born April 14, 1889, the daughter of John and Dora Rush Bernett, and was married June 20, 1907, to John W. Hileman. She was a charter member of Trinity American Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Hileman is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Lois Sanborn of Sioux City, Mrs. Evrett Younker of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Clayton Singleton of Coralville; also six grandchilren and 11 great-grandchildren,

She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, her husband, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Those who wish may give memorials in her name to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Parrott and Wood Funeral Home.

Private funeral services will be Tuesday at the Kathryn Pahl Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Irving Tange, superintendent and chaplain of the Lutheran Home, will officiate. Friends may call until Tuesday noon at the funeral home.

Denise A. (Klee) Dixon, 57, Anderson, S.C.

Denise Dixon (Klee), 57, died peacefully on July 20, 2013, at her home in Anderson, South Carolina.

Denise was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. After attending Ellis Junior High, she graduated from Austin High School in 1973.

She was married to Dan Dixon, also from Austin, for more than 40 years. Dan and Denise have two daughters, Shelley Dixon and Angie Dixon-Quinn (husband Jason). They have two grandsons, Dalton Dixon and Elijah Quinn.

The family and friends left behind are fortunate to have been a part of her life.

Funeral services will be held to honor Denise at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 25 at the Woodlawn Sosebee Funeral Home, P.O. Box 13318, Anderson, SC, 29624.

Obituary for Bernard Joseph Carey

Bernard Joseph Carey, 78, of Austin, Minnesota, died July 21, 2013, at Sacred Heart Care Center after a long battle with Parkinsons disease.

Bernard was born on December 25, 1934, in Austin to Horace and Cecilia (Thome) Carey. He grew up in Austin and graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1954.

On November 16, 1957, he married the love of his life, Gayle Kloberdanz at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. They had three daughters, Kimberly, Mary and Shelly. The couple lived in Austin their entire married life, where Bernard "Bernie" worked at Red Owl Foods, Austin Public Schools and Hormel Foods.

Bernie was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin.

He enjoyed decorating at Christmas time. Bernie was also known as Frosty the Snowman and loved to entertain the children. Each year he would put up an elaborate display. He would go to schools, nursing homes, Christmas in the City, parades in Red Wing and many other activities as Frosty. He spent most of his time building new things for his Christmas display. Bernie loved his grandchildren and tried to make them happy all of the time. He enjoyed making people smile, and he had a smile that melted your heart.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle; daughters, Kimberly (Jerome) Grdina, Naperville, Illinois, Mary Carey, Austin, Shelly (Michael) Weinmann, Austin; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Charlene Young, Austin, Cecelia (Tom) Winjum, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Mary (Marvin) Winkels, LeRoy, Minn., Velma (John) Strange, Fremont, Nebraska, Rosemary (Keith) Price, Rose Creek, Minnesota; a brother, David (Mary) Carey, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Horace and Michael; three sisters, Margaret, Magdalene and Helen; a great-granddaughter, Cloe; three brothers-in-law.

Angela Emma (Krebsbach) Slowinski, 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Angela was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Johnsburg, Minn., to Matthew and Christina (Juenger) Krebsbach. On Sept. 5, 1950, she was united in marriage to Joseph Slowinski in Johnsburg.

Angela was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother who was always there to help. She found happiness in doing for others. Angela enjoyed the outdoors and loved working in her flower garden, sewing, baking, bowling with her friends on league and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all.
