Linda Marie (Nyberg) Ofstedahl

1951-2013

Linda M. Ofstedahl, 62, of rural Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at her home.

Linda Marie Nyberg was born March 3, 1951, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Lewis Walter and Audrey (Hedlund) Nyberg. She graduated from Richfield High School and attended Minnesota School of Business. Linda was married to Gary J. Ofstedahl on June 10, 1972, in Richfield, Minn.

She worked as a legal secretary and had also worked at the corporate offices of Hormel Foods. She returned to MSB to complete the court reporting program. Linda reported for several months until Kyle was born. At that time she chose to stay at home, raising her children and transcribing for Gary. She began working in the Austin Public School district and then more recently in Blooming Prairie as a paraprofessional, loving the children and her coworkers.

Linda loved nature, especially sunsets and rises, her gardening, walks, and just being outside, even if it meant playing sports with the kids. She was energetic, always ready to play games or just be silly. She had supper on the table every night, and lunches ready for the kids to take to school the next day. Linda always put others first, never complained, and never quit being a wife and mother. She allowed her children to follow their hearts and encouraged them in all of their endeavors. Linda’s kindness was always present. She was naturally lovable and effortlessly brought joy to everyone she met. Linda was an inspiration on how to be a better person. She also enjoyed serving at Westminster Presbyterian Church on various committees, as a Sunday school teacher, and singing in the choir. Linda loved her lord and his church.

Linda was preceded in death by her father.

Linda is survived by her husband, Gary Ofstedahl, Austin, Minn.; sons and daughters-in-law, Kyle and Emily Ofstedahl, Rochester, Minn., Adam and Rebecca Ofstedahl, Crested Butte, Colo., Micah Ofstedahl, Ashland, Ore.; daughter, Alyssa Ofstedahl, Minneapolis; grandchildren, Grace, Caleb, Ethan and Aaron Ofstedahl; mother, Audrey Nyberg, Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Cheryl Nyberg, Farmington, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Milo Hines, Ham Lake, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael Olmsted officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service. Memorials may be designated to the Hormel Institute or Relay for Life.

Arlin Howard Sawyer

1936-2013

Arlin Howard Sawyer, 76, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Arlin was born May 28, 1936, in Austin, to Merle N. and Alice (Ramseth) Sawyer. After graduating from Austin High School in 1954, Arlin joined the military. He then worked with his father in the gas station business before going to work for Hormel Foods in 1967, retiring in 1990.

On October 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Delone Bakke at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Chapel in Austin. The couple raised two children. The Sawyer family lived on a hobby farm from 1973 to 1999 and then moved to Austin. Arlin was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the VFW and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed golfing and playing pool.

Survivors include his wife Delone of Austin; his children, Kelly (Joel) Langlie of Ellendale, Minn., and Dr. Michael (Stephanie) Sawyer of Rochester, Minn.; three grandchildren, Jake Langlie, Colin Sawyer and Morgan Sawyer; brother Mervale (Adair) Sawyer of Austin; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Alice Sawyer and his grandparents.

June Avis (Day) Balk

1927-2013

June Balk, 85, of Milaca, Minnesota, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Regency Hospital in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

June Avis Balk was born June 13, 1927, to John and Elsie (Olson) Day in Wheaton, Minnesota. June was united in marriage to Alfred “Jake” Balk on June 12, 1965, at the Milaca United Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Austin, Minnesota, until 1974, and June worked at Sears in Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake in 1997.

Services will be on Tuesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. at Milaca United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Borgholm Cemetery. Visitation one hour prior at the church on Tuesday. Arrangements are by Peterson-Johnson Funeral Home in Milaca, www.pjfuneralhome.com

Catherine Ann York, 67, Green Valley, Arizona.

Catherine Ann (Berg) York, 67, of Green Valley, Arizona, and formerly of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at The Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, surrounded by her family and her best friend, following a courageous battle against a rare Ovarian Cancer.

Cathy "Muffy" was born to Mary (McAleer) and Arnold Berg on January 27, 1946, at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin, Minnesota.

She attended grade school in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in June 1964. After high school, she attended the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and earned a bachelor of science degree in business.

During her lifetime she held various jobs, first working at the Hormel corporate offices from 1964 to 1971. After that, she was a daycare provider from 1978 to 1983 and a Cub Scout leader. She then worked as a sales representative for Apple Computers, then for Dell Computer Company. In the late 90s, Cathy began a career in real estate until her diagnosis of cancer in June 2012. She worked in real estate in the Tucson-Green Valley area. During her career in real estate she won various awards and was a member of the "Million Dollar Club."

In February 1991, Cathy married Terry York in Rochester, Minn. They lived in Rochester while Terry worked for IBM. During their marriage they lived in Minnesota, Texas and eventually retired in Green Valley.

Cathy enjoyed and loved to wear hats. She loved to go to the movies, golf, rollerblade, ride bike, play tennis, racquetball and other activities with her grandchildren as well as going to their sporting events. She was an avid runner and participated in marathons. A personal fitness trainer, lifted weights, taught Tai Chi classes and Pilates. Cathy was also very active in her church (Unity in the Valley) and was president from 2009 to 2013. She was the president of the Women’s Council of Realtors from 2002 to 2003 and president of the GVS Association of Realtors.

She is survived by her loving husband Terry York; five children, Robert (Linda) Lane, Winthrop, Minn., Mary (Rod) Miller, Austin, Joel (Teri) Johnson, Austin, Scott York, Portland, Ore., Kevin York, Portland; nine grandchildren, Cole (Mary) Lane, Michael Lane, Amanda (Jamie) Lane, Marissa (Jerry) Lane, Megan Lane, Mitchell Miller, Tanner Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Noah Miller, four great-grandchildren, Jack Thoreson, Jaquan Sanders, Leland Lane, Audrie Hoeting; two brothers, Arnold/ Sonny (Cathy) Berg, Prior Lake, Minn.; Ric (Toni) Berg, Austin; best friend of many years, Lori Dozark, Rochester; two sisters-in-law, Sue Martinez, Santa Ana, Calif., Kathleen (Dennis) Zager, Fountain Valley, Calif.; and nieces, nephews, cousins and aunt.

Cat was preceded in death by her parents, great-Niece Isabelle, brother-in-law Tony Martinez, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Phil Farmo officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, Cathy would like memorials to The Unity in The Valley Church, Sahuarita Arizon towards their mortgage reduction.

Madeline O. Braaten, age 98, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Austin.

Madeline Orphy Burger was born on May 6, 1914 in Morristown, MN to Albert and Wilhelmina (Meyer) Burger. She graduated from Austin High School in 1933. Madeline worked as a house keeper and cleaning lady in addition to raising her daughter, Barbara Page. She was a member of the Friendly 24 Club. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, gardening and planting. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harlan Page in 1957 and husband, Bennie Braaten in 1996, two brothers, Chet and Laurel and her half brother Robert Lauritzen.

Madeline is survived by her daughter Barbara Page, Austin, MN; half sister, Alice Gallaher, Austin, MN; Sister-in-law: Jeanne Lauritzen, Austin, MN; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Reverend Susan Rector Li officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour before the service at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary.

Phyllis J. (Jorgensen) Hopfe

1927-2013

Phyllis J. Hopfe, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 16, 2013, after a long illness.

Phyllis was born July 19, 1927, in Osage, Iowa, to Victor and Rose (Hiner) Jorgensen. She resided in Osage until after high school graduation, when she moved to Austin. Phyllis was married to Robert (Bob) Hopfe in 1950 and they had two daughters, Cynthia and Sherri.

Phyllis worked at the 1st National Bank for many years and also did bookkeeping at the Austin Eagles Club. She took pride in her small home of nearly 60 years, planting flowers and more tomatoes than she could ever give away. Phyllis was witty and will be remembered for her fun spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, daughter Cindy, grandson Justin and brother Robert. Phyllis will be sadly missed by her daughter, Sherri; granddaughter, Carli; nieces, nephew, cousins, sisters, brother-in-law and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Shari Mason officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before the service on Friday morning. Interment will be at a later date.

Ida A. Mattern

1866-1921

Mrs. Ida A. Mattern. age 54. wife of A. W. Mattern, Austin, Minnesota, died at 1:55 p. m. yesterday in St. Olaf's Hospital, Austin, as result of injuries sustained a week ago when she was struck by an automobile.

Surviving are the husband, two daughters, Mrs. H. M. Walters and Mrs. T. J. Harris, both of Austin, three grandsons, three brothers and three sisters.

The deceased and her family resided in Waterloo for a number of years and the body will be brought here for burial. Services are to be at Westminster Presbyterian Church Sunday at 4 p. m., with Dr. A. C. Preston, pastor, in charge. Burial will be in Elmwood.

Mrs. Mattern Dies Suddenly
Death ends period of improvement
Clot From Injured Tissues The Cause

Mrs. A. W. Mattern who was injured when she was struck by an automobile Friday afternoon, died at the hospital of her injuries. An autopsy held last night by Dr. P. A. Lonumen indicated that her death was due to pulmonary embolism; probably caused by a blood clot from the injured tissues getting into the blood vessels.

Until yesterday noon Mrs. Mattern's condition had steadily improved and her husband and daughters hoped for an early recovery when death came suddenly.

Ida Axtell was born at Mechanicsville, Iowa to Jesse & Emeline (Shangle) Axtell on September 19, 1866. She married Aden Wilber Mattern on August 24, 1893 in Blue Rapids, Kansas. With her husband and two children she came to Mower County two years ago and has lived on the Brookholm farm 1 mile east of Austin since last November. The family came to Mower County from Adrian Michigan. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband and two daughters; Mrs. (Mildred) H. M. Walters of Dexter and Mrs. (Ruth Irene) T. J. Harris who resides east of this city.

Mrs. Mattern was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church of Austin.

Funeral services will be held at the Jordan Undertaking Parlors tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and the body will be taken to Waterloo, Iowa the former home of Mrs. Mattern.

Aden Wilber Mattern

1867-1951

Aden Mattern, 83, former Waterloo carpenter, died Thursday of complications incident to advanced age in the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. J. Harris, of Brooklyn, Michigan.

Born November 25, 1867, at West Unity, Ohio, Mr. Mattern was a son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Mattern. He married in August of 1893 Miss Ida Axtell at Blue Rapids, Kansas.

He was employed as carpenter here for many years. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

During the past 25 years Mr. Mattern resided with his daughter, Mrs. Harris, part of the time at Deep River, Iowa, and later in Michigan.

Surviving Mr. Mattern besides the daughter with whom he made his home is another daughter, Mrs. Henry Walter, of San Lorenzo. Cal., as well as eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The body will arrive Saturday morning at Kearns Garden Chapel where funeral arrangements are being made.

Donald "Ole" Olson

1921-2013

#1:

Donald "Ole" Olson, 91, of Austin, Minn., died Sunday morning, March 17, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Donald was born April 28, 1921, in Harmony, Minnesota, to Edward and Emma (Fosse) Olson, where he grew up and graduated from Harmony High School in 1939. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Donald worked as a laborer at the Hormel Foods Corporation for more than 40 years. On February 21, 1948, he was united in marriage to Muriel Severson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church Parsonage. He was a charter member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. His biggest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren and hearing about their travels, studies and work.

Over the years he enjoyed golfing, traveling, his fishing trips to Canada and the annual Christmas Magic Shows put on by his grandchildren. He loved visiting with people and made friends everywhere he went. He will be remembered for his good sense of humor, his generous spirit and his unconditional love. His family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife and daughter as well as others he’s missed for so long. Donald also liked taking part in his Monday and Saturday breakfast groups, and daily afternoon coffee at the Oak Grill.

Survivors include his children Deborah (Harry) Jensen of Riceville, Iowa, Randy (Kathy) Olson of Northfield, Minn., and Becky Olson of Coon Rapids, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Emma Olson; his wife Muriel in 1980; one daughter, Pamela Wilcox; and brothers Edward Olson, Bernard Olson and Norris Olson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Interment will occur later on in the spring with family at Oakwood Cemetery.

Ann M. (Dahlgren) Becker

1949-2013

Ann M. Becker, 63, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Ann Marie Becker was born June 12, 1949, in Austin, Minnesota, the daughter of Kenneth and Meredee (Sass) Dahlgren. She grew up in Austin where she graduated from high school and attended Austin Community College. Ann moved to Bancroft in 1980.

She was united in marriage to Tom Becker on December 4, 1982, at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. She worked at Kennedy's Department Store, Bancroft Lumber Yard and Roy's Café for several years. Ann provided daycare for 24 years and loved all the kids she helped raise. She had a special place in her heart for Tina, Michael and Scott Berte. Ann also taught CCD classes at St. John’s Catholic and helped organize the opening of the Bancroft Youth Center. Tom and Ann moved to Algona in 2011.

Ann loved and cherished the time she spent with her family and treasured her four granddaughters. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, reading, walking and swimming, and her cat Gramps. She spent much of her time cheering on all her granddaughters in their sporting events. Ann proudly was a stem cell donor for her sister Carla, who had leukemia.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Tom Becker of Algona; two children, Jodi McGuire and her husband Kevin of Algona, and Tim Jahr of Swea City; and four granddaughters, Ashley, Hilary and Grace McGuire of Algona, and Morgan Jahr of Bancroft; her mother, Meredee Dahlgren of Austin; five brothers and sisters, Eric (Lupi) Dahlgren of Ft. Collins, Colo., Scott (Judy) Dahlgren of Ft. Collins, Janet (Tim) Blood of Eugene, Ore., Carla (Gary) Rienken of Boulder Junction, Wis., and Dale (Shirlee) Dahlgren of Aurora, Colo.; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Kathy (Dr. Chris) Haeckler of Crocket, Texas, Dennis (Ruth) Becker of Bancroft, Jane (Jeffry) Lynn of Golden, Colo., Mary (Dr. Mark) Fedder of Collinsville, Ill., and Donna (Jon) Laakso of Bemidji, Minn.; 11 nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Dahlgren; and parents-in-law, Vincent and Lorraine Becker.

A funeral Mass for Ann M. Becker will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona with Father Edward M. Girres officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Algona. Kraig D. Millner, 52, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday evening, March 18, 2013.

Kraig was born January 20, 1961, in Havre, Montana, to Donald and Agnes (Seidel) Millner. He graduated from Havre High School in 1979. After graduation he moved to Williston, North Dakota and began working at the local Family Thrift Center, where he met Colleen Soderholm. The two were married on March 12, 1983. They had two sons, Donald and Tracy. In the fall of 1989 he transferred from Williston to Rochester, Minnesota where he worked at EconoFoods. Around 1992 he accepted a position with Quality Pork Processing where he worked for up until his passing. He moved his family to Austin, Minnesota, in June of 1993, where they call home today.

Kraig had a love for sporting events and the outdoors since his childhood. He fished and hunted whenever he had the opportunity. He always looked forward to his yearly October Muskie fishing trip to Spooner, Wisconsin, with his close friends and family. He was an avid fan of his Minnesota teams and always rooted for the underdog. His family was the most important thing to him. He loved watching his sons play sports as they grew from children to adults, and he cared for his wife when she was diagnosed with Huntington's disease in 2008. He will be missed for his free spirit, sense of humor, and kindness.

He was preceded in death by his father Donald Kenneth in December 1961.

Kraig D. Millner, 52, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday evening, March 18, 2013.

Kraig was born January 20, 1961, in Havre, Montana, to Donald and Agnes (Seidel) Millner. He graduated from Havre High School in 1979. After graduation he moved to Williston, North Dakota, and began working at the local Family Thrift Center, where he met Colleen Soderholm. The two were married on March 12, 1983. They had two sons, Donald and Tracy. In the fall of 1989, he transferred from Williston to Rochester, Minn., where he worked at EconoFoods. Around 1992, he accepted a position with Quality Pork Processors where he worked up until his passing. He moved his family to Austin in June of 1993, where they call home today.

Kraig had a love for sporting events and the outdoors since his childhood. He fished and hunted whenever he had the opportunity. He always looked forward to his yearly October Muskie fishing trip to Spooner, Wis., with his close friends and family. He was an avid fan of his Minnesota teams and always rooted for the underdog. His family was the most important thing to him. On October 15, 1983, he married Kathleen Lammers at St. John's Catholic Church in Johnsburg. Sidney M. Heiny, age 90 of Austin, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin.

1932-2013

Robert E. Blowers, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Robert Eugene Blowers was born May 28, 1932, in Austin to Walter and Inez (Strand) Blowers. He lived in Lyle as a child and graduated from Lyle High School in 1950. Bob served his country in the army during the Korean War. He married Florence Bartholomew on June 5, 1955, at the Church of Christ in Austin.

Bob worked as an employee of the Hormel Corp. until his retirement in 1986. He later worked at Mrs. Gerry’s in Albert Lea. Bob was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin. He enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, traveling, camping, bicycling, going on bus tours, long walks and spending time with his cats and dogs. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Florence Blowers, Austin; daughters, Angela Wrolson, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Julie (Daniel) Pieper, Hayward, Minnesota, Amy (Bernardo) Squires, Richfield, Minn., Gina Blowers, Austin; six grandchildren, Ginger Wrolson, Darrek Wrolson, Crystal Squires, Truly Squires, Nathaniel Squires, Talia Squires; one brother, Larry (Mary Ann) Blowers, Byron, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Inez Blowers, and nephew, Bruce Blowers.

Cora Amundson Steene

1888-1976

Mrs. Cora Steene

Cora Amundson Steene was born January 20, 1888, in Nevada Township, Mower county, Minnesota, the daughter of Knut and Liv Jorgenson Amundson. She was baptized and confirmed at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church. Cora attended Pinehurst Grade School, Lyle High School and the Northwood Normal School. A rural Lyle resident her entire life, she had resided at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin, for two years at the time of her death, at the age of 88.

On December 30, 1916, she was united in marriage to Andrew Steene at her parent's home. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1972. Mrs. Steene taught school at Carpenter, Iowa, for three years. She was a member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, WCTU, Ladie's Circle, and taught Sunday School at the church.

Cora Steene died at 8 p.m. August 9, 1976, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, after suffering heart failure.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Miss Gladys Steene,St. Ansgar; three nieces: Mrs. Nordahl (Lenore) Nelson, Lyle, Mrs. Lillian Rettkowski, Wilbur, Washington, Mrs. Hazel Olson, Flandreau, South Dakota; one nephew, Emmett Johnson, Sun City, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters and brothers.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 12, 1976, at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, Rev. G. Grant officiating. Interment was in the Six Mile Grove cemetery. The Worlein Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Melvin Oscar Peterson

1894-1984

MELVIN OSCAR PETERSON

Melvin Oscar Peterson died at St. Mark's Home on February 28, 1984, at the age of 89 years. He had been a resident of St. Mark's Home since June, 1978.

He was born in Lyle, Minnesota, on July 1, 1894, to Ole and Malena Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church near Lyle, Minnesota.

He lived in Lyle until 1910, after which he homesteaded in South Dakota. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Northern France during World War I. Following services in the Army, he attended barber school in Minneapolis. He was a barber in various communities in the Midwest for 40 years.

Melvin married Iva C. Miller on August 10, 1926, in Flandreau, South Dakota. They lived in Austin most of their married years. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, a member of the Senior Choir and Lutheran Cbrotherhood. He was a member of the American Legion and WWI Barracks.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1974, his parents and brothers and sisters.

He is survived by two daugters and sons-in-law, Keith and Clarice Anderson of Manlius, N.Y., and Clifford and Marlyn Schroeder of Blooming Prairie; seven grandsons; nieces, nephews and two sisters-in-law.

Funeral services were held on March 2, 1984, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Rev. J. Mikkelson officiating.

Laura (McDermott) Judd

Laura Judd, 59, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 22, 2013.

Laura was born February 1, 1954, in Austin to Howard and Rita McDermott. She was married to Gerard Judd in 1973 and they raised five children. Laura was a homemaker and ran a day care from her home. She was also an entrepreneur who owned three video stores. Her accomplishments included a return to college to earn a degree in computer art and animation.

Laura was preceded in death by her mother Rita McDermott and her daughter Vanessa Judd. She is survived by Gerard Judd Sr., her loving husband of 39 years; her children, Felicia Drake (Angelus), Gerard Judd Jr., Bryan Judd and Kendra Judd; father Howard McDermott; brother Rodney McDermott (Jean); and sister Anita McDermott; many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and family.

A memorial service for Laura Judd will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin. Condolences may be left for the family at www.mayerfh.com.

David Terry "Bummy" Bumgarner

(November 24, 1940 - March 22, 2013)

David (Bummy) Bumgarner, age 72, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday March 22, 2013 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home after a two year battle with cancer.

David Terry Bumgarner was born November 24, 1940 at Austin, Minnesota the son of Harold and Viva (Lembrick) Bumgarner. Dave graduated from Austin High School in the Class of 1958 and from Austin Junior College. He was married to Claudette Collett on August 12, 1961 at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

David worked as a loan officer and vice president in the banking business in the Austin area until his retirement. He had worked at First Bank Austin, the Security Bank and the Sterling State Bank. He was a member of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Ambassador’s Club, the 100 Club and the Elks Club. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

David enjoyed hunting and fishing as well at traveling to car shows with his 1965 Mustang. He also liked to watch sports and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

David is survived by his wife, Claudette Bumgarner, Austin, Minnesota; Children, Robert and Kim Bumgarner, Austin, Minnesota, Laurie and Mark Haider, Austin, Minnesota, Bill Bumgarner, Austin, Minnesota; Grandchildren, Adam and Sarah Bumgarner, Alex Bumgarner, Michael Haider, Nicole Haider, Joe Bumgarner, Ben Bumgarner and Kallie Bumgarner, Great Grandchildren, Carter and Jacob Bumgarner.

Maynard L. Deboer

1917-2005

Maynard L. Deboer, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

He was born June 24, 1917 in Dexter, Minnesota, the son of Estert and Anna (Lindberg) DeBoer.   He married Alice Hansen on March 7, 1940 in Stout, Iowa.   She preceded him in death on November 27, 1987. Maynard farmed for 53 years in rural Cedar Falls.

Survivors include his two daughters, Karen Kugel of Cedar Falls and Toni (Peter) Mueller of Marion, Iowa; his son, Lynn (Claudia) DeBoer of Wellsburg, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kenneth L. Kugel, Kevin L. Kugel, Kurt L. Kugel, Daniel L. Barkhoff and Sandy J. Schebler; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Virgil (Donna) DeBoer.   Maynard was preceded in death by his wife and parents; a brother, Maurice Nielsen; and a sister, Gladys Wefel.

Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with interment at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls.

A memorial fund will be established.

George Arnold Overlie

c1923-2013

George Arnold Overlie, 89, of Minneapolis passed away March 23, 2013.

George was born and raised in Rose Creek, Minn. He served with the U.S. Army at Omaha Beach and retired as a freelance artist. He enjoyed family, friends and the outdoors, and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret; children, Sara (Richard) Kloeper, Ann (Jorge) Marquez and George Alfred; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings Ralph, Daphine Ofsthun and Shirley (Dale) Capon; numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 10 a.m., with visitation starting at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1 Lourdes Place, Minneapolis. Burial will be later at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Washburn-McReavy is in charge of arrangements.

Ruben M. "Rudy" Jansen

1927-2013

Ruben M. "Rudy" Jansen, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Sacred Heart Care Center.

Ruben was born May 19, 1927, in Rake, Iowa, to Albert and Mary (Hofdman) Jansen. On February 21, 1948, Rudy married Betty Jansen in Lyle, Minnesota. He was employed by Ankeny's Dairy, retiring in 1989. A member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Rudy enjoyed spending time at their cabin by Wabasha, Minnesota, where he loved to fish. Once he quit smoking, he took up crocheting. Rudy enjoyed watching the eagles along the Mississippi River, traveling across the United States and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children: Sharon (Gary) Kautz of Charlotte, N.C., Larry (Kathy) Jansen of Eagan, Minnesota, Barbara (Bill) Kilgore of Alexandria, Minnesota, Ronald Jansen of Waseca, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Jeff, Chad, David, Mark, Amy and Jacob; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Brooklyn, Alexis and Jackson; his sister, Arlene Wills of Montevideo, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary Jansen; his wife, Betty, in 2006 and three brothers: Johnnie, Arlow and Marlow.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at Worlein Funeral Home. Memorials can be directed to the family. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at worlein.com.

Norm Kjome

1929-2013

Norm Kjome, 83, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Norm was born October 24, 1929, in Austin, Minnesota. He grew up in Austin where he graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1947. On December 22, 1950, he married Bonnie Espey in Meridian, Mississippi, while stationed at Kiester Field Air Force Base in Biloxi.

Norm was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Austin, the American Legion and the Elks. He enjoyed golfing, hand ball, cross country skiing, drives along the Mississippi River and especially time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Debbie (Ron) Ferch; sons, Todd (Carmen), Kurt (Dionne), Craig (Shannon Judd); nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Brady and Karen (Al) Liffengren; many special nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, Eric; parents, Norman and Loretta; granddaughter, Alisa Ferch.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn Monson officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hormel Historic Home and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com.

Betty B. (Meyers) Shumate

Betty B. Shumate, age 84 of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Johanna Shores Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills, Minnesota.

Betty Meyers was born September 24, 1928 in Grainger, Minnesota the daughter of John and Olive (Leister) Meyers. She grew up in the Grainger and Harmony area, graduating from Harmony High School. She moved to Austin and worked at the Geo A. Hormel Company. On January 31, 1948, Betty married Wayne E. Shumate in Austin. An active member of Fellowship United Methodist Church, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, walking, playing cards and visiting with friends and family.

Survivors include her daughter Bonnie Shumate of Oakdale, Minnesota; a brother, Norman Meyers of Waterloo, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Olive Meyers; her husband Wayne in 2009; two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Rev. Ted Weidman officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa. Memorials are directed to the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

Richard Gregg Murphy

1920-2013

Richard Gregg Murphy, age 92 of rural Lyle, Minnesota, died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin.

He was born May 22, 1920 in Austin, Minnesota to John and Lulu (Gregg) Murphy. One of four brothers, Richard attended school in Gregg County School District #10. He worked at Austin Drug before starting to farm with his grandfather Reuben Gregg near Lyle.

This has been a family farm for 152 years. Richard served in the National Guard prior to World War II. On October 4, 1941, he married Mildred Irene Helgeson in Lyle, Minnesota. The couple raised three children. Richard and Mildred moved into Austin in 1989. Richard retired from farming at the age of 85. A member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minnesota, he served on the church council. Richard was also a member of the Lyle Lions Club, a former school board member, and ASC board member. He loved being with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially enjoyed his daily drives with Mildred and having breakfast and coffee with Roger Walsh.

Survivors include his wife Mildred Murphy of Austin; his children Larry (Sandra) Murphy of Lyle, Ric (Tanya) Murphy of Leroy, Marsha (Roger) Evenson of Delafield, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Lulu Murphy and three brothers Chet, Marion, and Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona, Iowa. The family prefers that memorials be directed to Alzheimer’s Research.

Don was born on January 24, 1932 in Havre, Montana, to Charles Richard and Sadie Ina (Gale) Patrick. Youngest of 16 children (thirteen boys, three girls), and the only one born in a hospital. Don attended the Rudyard rural school, graduated from Havre High School, and attended two years at Havre University studying architecture.

He met Ann L. Christenson at church in Havre, Montana and later at Seattle, Washington, at the National Luther League Convention. They were engaged in November 1951, and married in March 21, 1952, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He farmed for two years at Goldstone, Montana, and then moved to Grafton, Iowa, where they bought a farm from the Lutheran Church. In addition, Don sold Hy-Line chickens, grain bin equipment, and MoorMan's feed, and whitewashed barns.

Together Don and Ann raised their six children; Debby, Danny, Dwight, David, Diane, & Donna. Their travels included Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, California, Florida, New Orleans; the 1967 World Expo in Montreal, Canada; and traveled to Japan with the Bridge of Fellowship Tour in 1977. For several years, Don chaperoned church H.S. students, including a few of his children, on missionary trips to northern Mexico.

Don retired from Moorman's Feed Company after 32 years in the fall of 1992. From 1990-1994, he traveled throughout Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, Germany, and San Marino. In 1995, he enjoyed touring with his siblings and some nieces/nephews to England, crossing the English Channel (The Chunnel) at Dover, UK, to France and then Italy. May 2001 Don & Ann enjoyed a cruise ship to Alaska, which included a train trip to Denali National Park.

Don and Ann were proud to be the first couple in their family to be married 60 years.

Don actively supported many roles throughout the years and was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church. In Don’s words “PRAISE THE LORD!”

Don is preceded in death by his wife Ann; his parents; and by twelve brothers and a sister.

Don is survived by six children: Debby (Donald) Arrett, Gordonsville, Minnesota, Daniel (Dan) Patrick, Grafton, Dwight Patrick, Denver, Colorado, David Patrick, Carpenter, Diane (Robert) Ackerman, Highland, Wisconsin, Donna (Ramón) Tirado, Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren: Chad Patrick, Clear Lake, Shelly Patrick, Denver, CO, Teresa Suydam, Denver, Colorado, Tylor Patrick, Osage, Kendra Ackerman (friend Kevin Kruse), Loganville, Wisconsin, Nathan Ackerman, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kenneth Ackerman, Loganville, Wisconsin, Ramón Triado Jr., fiancé Erin, Woodstock, Georgia, Daniel Triado, Colorado Springs, Colorado; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Gagnon of Chester, Montana, and Ruth Meredith of Havre, Montana; and many nieces and nephews.

Nordahl Nelson

1896-1981

Nordahl Chester nelson was born April 14, 1896, in Nevada Township, Mower County, Minnesota, the son of Nels and Christina Nelson.

A lifetime resident of the Lyle area, he attended coutnry schools and later was engaged in farming. He was united in marriage with Lenore Olson, at the Lyle parsonage on December 18, 1919.

A lifetime member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, he gladdened many a heart with his sence of wit and humor.

Nordahl died at his home on February 3, 1981. He was preceded in death by two sons, norman and Leland; three grandsons; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Chester of Austin, Gary of Lyle; by four daughters, Mrs. Harry (Eula) Reshetar, Mrs. Merle (Eileen) Heard, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Kraushaar, Austin, Mrs. Dan (Charlotte) Feltz, Osage, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lee (Ardella) Nelson, Blue Earth, Minnesota; and by one brother, Jay, of Adams, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on February 6, 1981 at Six Mile Grove Lutheran church with Pastor Gaylord Grant officiating. Spring interment will be in Six Mile Grove cemetery, with the Worlein Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Dennis Nelson, Alan Reshetar, Daral Heard, Gregory nelson, Bradley Feltz, and Kevin Morgan. Honorary pallbearer was Jeff Nelson.

Lenore Nelson

1898-1983

Lenore (Olson) Nelson was born March 8, 1898, in Lyle, Minnesota, the daughter of Carl and Malena Olson.

She attended Pinehurst Grade School. Her marriage to Nordahl Nelson took place on December 18, 1919, at Lyle, and they farmed on Lyle, Route 1. Moving later to Austin, Minnesota, she resided at 400 15th Ave. S.W.

Mrs. Nelson died Monday, July 11, 1983, at St. Olaf Hospital.

She is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Harry (Eula) Reshetar, Mrs. Merle (Eileen) Heard, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Kraushaar, Austin, Mrs. Don (Char) Feltz, Osage, Iowa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chester and Barbara Nelson of Austin, Gary and Norma Nelson of Lyle, Mrs. Ardella Sorenson, Blue Earth, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nordahl; to sons, Leland and Norman; one brother, Kaius; and by four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 15, 1983, at six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, Lyle, with Rev. Gaylord Grant officiating. Interment was in six Mile Grove cemetery with pallbearers: Dean Nelson, Scott Heard, Kevin Morgan, Brad Feltz, Jeff Nelson, and Jerry Reshetar. Honorary pall bearers were H. Alan Reshetar, Craig Reshetar, Greg Nelson, Dennis Nelson, Rich Heard, and Darol Heard.

Worlein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Naomi Hannah (Kauff) Larsen

1934-2013

Naomi Larsen, age 78, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, and formerly of Onalaska, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 31, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System - Austin, surrounded by her family.

Naomi Hannah Kauff was born September 4, 1934 in Queens, New York, to Edward and Ethel (Dieck) Kauff. Her passion was the companionship of animals. Continually throughout her life, she would adopt into the home every animal her two sons would bring home. Naomi had turned her home in Brownsdale into the island of misfit animals.

Survivors include her two sons Leif F. Larsen of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and David B. (Tess) Larsen of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; granddaughters Rachel Lyn Larsen (fiance Shawn Viner) and Hannah Lynn Larsen of Onalaska; great-granddaughter Emilee Nicole Klich of Onalaska; brother William Kauff of Long Island, NY; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph E. Larsen, her sister Muriel Kauff, sister-in-law Cressy Kauff, niece Diane Boyle, great granddaughter Hailey Marie Viner, and her in-laws Boye and Christine Larsen.

Memorial services will be held in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, at a later date. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.

Erliss Maurine (Olson) Petersen

1923-2013

Erliss Maurine Petersen, age 89 of Austin, Minnesota died Sunday morning, March 31, 2013, at her home in Austin.

She was born on December 5, 1923, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the daughter of Harry C. and Josephine L. (Nelson) Olson. She attended school in Albert Lea and on February 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Marion D. "Mike" Petersen in Albert Lea. The couple made their home in Austin, where Erliss was employed for forty years at the Geo A. Hormel Company retiring in 1983.

She enjoyed baking for her family, especially her chocolate chip cookies as well as playing cards and going on bus trips. She was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Her husband, Marion "Mike" died on April 17, 1994.

Survivors include four children, Carol (Eric) Jensen of Austin, Ritchie (Sandy) Petersen of Rochester, Joni (Gene) Dalhoff of Baraboo, Wisconsin and Terry (Dawn) Petersen of Austin; nine grandchildren, Jessica McGuire, Kellee Kirby, Brian Petersen, Eric Petersen, Kristin Dalhoff Greisinger, Christopher Dalhoff, Nicholas Dalhoff, Jenny Petersen and Dan Petersen; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Bakken of Albert Lea and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion "Mike" Petersen on April 17, 1994; son, Jerry in 1959 and one sister, Dorothy Olson in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Todd Portinga AIM, officiating. Interment will follow the service in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 2nd at the Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials are requested for cancer research at the Hormel Institute of Austin.

Obituary for Eugene William Gerber

Eugene William Gerber, age 88, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the Cedars of Austin.

Eugene was born November 15, 1924, to William and Mary (Puettman) Gerber at their home in Taopi. He attended school in Adams and helped on the family farm until he joined the Army. After his time in the service, he started working at the Hormel plant.

He met and married J. Charlene Flink at Queen of Angels Catholic Church on the 25th of August 1947. They have had a very happy and blessed lifelong marriage of 65 years.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene, Austin, Minnesota; daughter, Diane (Donald) LaVallie, Austin, Minnesota; son, Gregory (Bonnie) Gerber, Austin, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Gerber, Kasson, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Debbie Getchell, Lisa Aden, Jacob Gerber, Adam Gerber, Derek LaVallie, Kristin Guneri, Ben LaVallie, Richard LaVallie, Tim Gerber, and Jenna Sanchez; 16 great-grandchildren, Sierra, Garrett, Nate, Owin, Olive, Osa, Jae, Autumn, Summer, Mina, Celestina, Elizabeth, Alice, Jacob, Lexie, and Bryce; siblings, Ed (Gert) May, Adams, Minnesota, Stan (Stephanie) Gerber, Salem, Oregon, Marie (Doug) Behrenfeld, Sequin, Wash., Norb (Helen) Gerber, LeRoy, Minnesota, Dave (LaVonne) Gerber, Rochester, Minnesota, Paul Gerber, Point, Texas; nieces and nephews.

Steve Duren

1924-2013

Steve Duren, 88, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Steve was born May 5, 1924, in Cazenovia, Wisconsin, to John and Mary (Weber) Duren. He graduated from Visitation High School in Stacyville, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On September 24, 1946, Steve married Jeanette Blaser at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. He worked for the Hormel Company for 38 years until his retirement.

Steve was a member of River Oaks Golf Club, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus and St. Edward's Catholic Church. Steve and his wife spent the winter months in Hilton Head, South Carolina visiting friends and family. He was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Steve is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jeanette Duren, Austin, Minnesota; sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Cheryl Duren, Hilton Head, Gary and Penny Duren, Hilton Head, Tim and Cathy Duren, Austin; grandchildren, Erica Duren, Stacey (Bert) Hardy, Jaclyn Duren, Natalie Duren, Brian (Winona) Duren, John Duren, Mary Anne Duren and Matt Duren; great-grandchildren, Erin, Alex and Sara Hardy; five brothers and two sisters; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a private committal service for the family at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may greet the family at the church on Saturday morning for one hour before the service and also after the service at the Corcoran Center when the family returns from the cemetery. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
