Grace Elaine (Evenson) Hayes

1914-2012

Grace Evenson Hayes, 84, of rural Racine, formerly of the Grand Meadow area, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, September 11, 1999.

Grace Elaine Hennager was born Dec. 22, 1914, in Nashua, Iowa, grew up in the Grand Meadow area and graduated from Grand Meadow High School. She married Roy Evenson on Dec. 1, 1932, in New Hampton, Iowa, and they farmed near Grand Meadow until moving to rural Racine in 1941; He died in 1986. On Sept. 27, 1986, she married Gerald Hayes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and they made their home in rural Racine where she had resided since 1941. He survives and is a retired over-the-road truck driver.

She worked at the former Reid Murdock canning plant (now Seneca Foods) in Rochester for many years, also worked at the Hollywood Bar in Rochester and at the former Walters Fish House in Stewartville, and was secretary and steward of Union Local 120 in Rochester. She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville and its ladies aid, Elks Lodge 414 of Austin, American Legion 164 Auxiliary of Stewartville and VFW Post 1215 Auxiliary of Rochester.

Survivors also include two daughters, Darlene (Mrs. Herbert) Waggener of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Vickie (Mrs. William) Rountree of Clarmont, Ga.; a son, Roger Evenson of Plymouth, Minn.; a stepson, Dean Hayes of Rochester; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Hennager of Maynard, Iowa, and Donald Hennager of Austin, and a sister, Lois (Mrs. Harold) Miller of Temple Bar, Ariz. She was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and a sister.

The funeral was Thursday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville with the Rev. Jule Erickson of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville officiating.

Burial was in the Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Lona 'Top' Hebl

1928-2012

Lona "Top" Hebl, 71, of Stewartville, a retired Minnesota Department of Transportation employee, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Saint Marys Hospital as the result of a heart attack suffered two days earlier.

Born March 29, 1928, in rural Grand Meadow, he grew up on the family farm there and attended area rural schools. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the Army and after his discharge returned to Grand Meadow and farmed. He later worked for Leon Joyce Construction Co. of Rochester and from 1966 until his retirement in 1990 was employed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation-Rochester Division.

On Nov. 14, 1952, he married Marcella Wallace in Rochester. His wife was a dental assistant. He was a member of High Forest Community Church, the Grand Meadow American Legion and Spring Valley VFW. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dewey and Lonnie, both of Stewartville, and Jeff of Lanesboro; three daughters, Kathy (Mrs. Richard) Swanson of Chatfield, Barb (Mrs. Daniel) Polkowske of Rochester and Anita (Mrs. Kevin) Heydt of Stewartville; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, and three sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Bernie) Zimprich of rural Racine, Marjorie (Mrs. Harold) Partridge of Grand Meadow, and his twin, Leona Ellingworth of Morristown, Minn. Five brothers and a half-sister preceded him in death.

The funeral was Saturday at High Forest Community Church with the Revs. Bob Sinex and Jim Barnhart co-officiating. Burial in High Forest Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Grand Meadow American Legion.

Gladys Elizabeth (Flickinger) Hoff

1909-1999

Gladys E. Hoff, 89, of Stewartville, Minnesota, a retired Kahler Hotel employee and farm homemaker, died of an apparent heart attack Monday, June 14, 1999, at her home.

Gladys Elizabeth Flickinger was born Aug. 20, 1909, in Lehigh, Iowa, and moved to rural Grand Meadow as a child. She grew up on the family farm, attended an area rural school and graduated from Grand Meadow High School. On Oct. 15, 1932, she married Delmar Hoff in Grand Meadow and they farmed in the Grand Meadow area until moving to Stewartville in 1961. She worked in housekeeping at the Kahler Hotel. Her husband was employed at Mayo Clinic. She was a member of the Stewartville United Methodist Church and its Women's Society.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Ellen (Mrs. Richard) Bridge of Irvine, Calif., and Janet (Mrs. Jon) Holmes of New Brighton, Minn.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Orville Flickinger of Houston, Texas.

A memorial service was held Thursday at the Stewartville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jef Olson officiating. Burial was in Bear Creek Cemetery in rural Grand Meadow.

Ruth Evelyn (Jacobson) Hamlin

1916-1999

Ruth E. Hamlin, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, a former Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at the Ostrander Nursing Home where she had resided a short time.

Ruth Evelyn Jacobson was born July 2, 1916, in Bennington Township, Mower County, and lived with her parents in the LeRoy area until her marriage. She worked at LeRoy Produce Co. for a number of years. On August 19, 1951, she married Wendell Hamlin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and they made their home in Austin. She enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include her husband, also at the Ostrander Nursing Home; and four brothers, Arthur M. Jacobson and Russell K. Jacobson, both of Austin, Alvin M. Jacobson of Ostrander and Raymond M. Jacobson of LeRoy. Three brothers preceded her in death.

The funeral was April 21 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tom Kolden officiating. Burial was in LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery.

Herbert F. Hanson

1946-1999

Herbert F. Hanson, 53, of Grand Meadow, a longtime area farmer and former Mower County commissioner, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon in rural Olmsted County.

He was born March 28, 1946 in Rochester to Edmond Hanson and Ivyll Mace Hanson. He attended and graduated from Grand Meadow High School where he was student council president, a star athlete and homecoming king.

On July 22, 1972 he was united in marriage to Ann Davis in Spring Valley and to this union two daughters were born, Kristine and Kathleen.

He was always full of fun. He had a great sense of humor and he loved farming. He also enjoyed playing golf, playing cards and spending time in his plane.

He was elected Mower County commissioner and spent four years in that position.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters; his mother, Ivyll Paulson; and one brother, Loren, all of Grand Meadow.

Services were Tuesday, May 25, at Bear Creek Lutheran Church in Frankford Township, Mower County.

Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Grand Meadow was in charge of arrangements. The body was cremated.

John Reier Harvey

1934-1999

John Reier Harvey, 65, of Danbury, Wis., formerly of Oronoco, died Dec. 14 at his home.

He was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Grand Meadow, and grew up in the area. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1952 and served in the Army in Germany during the Korean conflict. On Dec. 30, 1954, he married Darlene J. Berning in Grand Meadow and they lived in Oronoco for 38 years. He was employed at IBM in Rochester for 33 years. He was a charter member and active in the Oronoco Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a member of VFW Post 9647 of Oronoco and Charles Cowden American Legion Post 184 of Pine Island. After moving to the Danbury area in July, 1996, he was active in the Jackson Township and Scott Township volunteer fire departments.

Survivors include hs wife; two daughters, Deb (Mrs. Steven) Swenson and Darla (Mrs. Terry) Ferguson, both of Pine Island; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Mae (Mrs. Robert) Gross of Grand Meadow and Jean Schroeder of Ellsworth, Minn. A sister preceded him in death.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Mahler Chapel in Pine Island with the Rev. Gary Wees officiating. Burial was in the Oronoco Cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Swanson-Owen VFW and Charles Cowden American Legion Posts.

Ruth Bertha (Drake) Harvey

1919-1999

Ruth Bertha Harvey, 80, of Spring Valley, Minnesota, died of cancer Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Ostrander Care Center, where she had resided since September of l998.

Ruth B. Drake was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Dexter, Mower county, Minnesota, to George and Anna (Kraft) Drake. She attended and graduated from Elkton High School in 1937 and was united in marriage to Herbert Harvey Dec. 12, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

She sold Stanley Home Products for a number of years and, along with her husband, operated the Coffee Shop in Spring Valley. She also worked at Semcac of Rushford and was a homemaker. After her retirement she resided at Hillside Apartments in Spring Valley and spent a lot of time at the home of her son, Dennis. She was an avid reader and spent her time crocheting and playing cards. Her family meant everything to her.

She is survived by her sons, Harold (Bonnie) Harvey of LeRoy, Dennis (Patty) Harvey of Woodbury and LeRoy (Barb) Harvey of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Calvin, of Rosemont.

She was preceded in death by her husband in May of 1980; a grandson, Michael; a great-granddaughter, Zarah; and one brother, Lewis.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dexter United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Wilson and the Rev. Steve Elderbrock officiating. Burial will be in the Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Winnie M. (Converse) Geerdes

1902-1999

Winnie M. Geerdes, 96, of rural Grand Meadow, Minnesota, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at her home.

She was born Winnie M. Converse on June 25, 1902, in High Forest Township. She grew up on the family farm there, and attended rural school and Stewartville High School. On Nov. 16, 1922, she married William Geerdes at her rural Stewartville home. The couple farmed in the Stewartville area until his death March 27, 1973.

She is survived by a son, Harry of Stewartville; two daughters, Betty Geerdes of rural Grand Meadow and Helen Bakken of Rochester. Her husband and four brothers preceded her in death.

The funeral was held Monday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville with the Rev. Jef Olson of the Stewartville United Methodist church officiating. Burial was in High Forest Cemetery.

Agnes Manda (Hovda) Gilbertson

1905-1999

Agnes Manda Gilbertson, 94, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

Agnes Manda Hovda was born Feb. 9, 1905, in Frankford Township, Mower County. In 1923, she graduated from Grand Meadow High School. She did clerical work at the Ford Garage in Spring Valley, and later worked for a large manufacturing company in Minneapolis until her retirement. On June 25, 1970, she married Samuel M. Gilbertson in Minneapolis. He died in 1982. After their marriage the couple made their home in Austin until his death. She then moved to the Cedars in Austin, where she lived until entering Grand Meadow Health Care Center. She enjoyed dancing, music, movies, reading, baking and cooking, knitting, crocheting and tatting.

Survivors include nieces and nephews. One sister and one brother preceded her in death.

The funeral will be today (Wednesday) at 2:30 p.m. at Bear Creek Lutheran Church, Frankford Township, with the Rev. Wayne Vogt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Grand Meadow.

Gladys Viola (Bolinger) Felber

1905-1999

Gladys Viola Felber, 93, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and formerly of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea.

Gladys Viola Bolinger was born Sept. 12, 1905, in Beauford, Minn. In addition to Albert Lea, she had lived in Easton, Minn., and Grand Meadow. Her husband, Philip, preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Theodore's Catholic Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Joyce Bjerke and Doris Frost, both of Rochester, Genevieve "Jenny" Rye and Betty Hendrickson, both of Albert Lea, and Darlene Faber of Austin; three sons, Jim of Albert Lea, David of Enid, Okla., and Richard of Red Wing; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Bolinger of Albert Lea. She was preceded in death by a son, a grandson, and nine brothers and sisters.

The Funeral was Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Chapel in Albert Lea with the Rev. Robert Schneider officiating. Burial was in St. Theodore's Cemetery in Albert Lea.

Dorothy E. (Wagner) Fenton

1928-1999

Dorothy E. Fenton, 71, of Grand Meadow, a retired Triad Industries employee and former bakery operator, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 7, 1999, at her home.

Dorothy E. Wagner was born February 18, 1928, in Wabasha. On November 9, 1950, she married Richard Fenton in Marble Falls, Texas. They operated a bakery in Grand Meadow until 1971. She later worked at Triad Industries in Stewartville until her retirement. Her husband died December 22, 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline (Mrs. Seevert) Gronvold of Grand Meadow; three sons, Donald, Michael and Timothy, all of Grand Meadow; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louie Wagner of Milwaukee and Edward Wagner of Wabasha; and two sisters, Claranette Atkinson of Wabasha and Muriel Demko of St. Paul.

She was preceded in death by a son and seven brothers and sisters.

A funeral Mass was Friday at St. Finbarr's Catholic Church in Grand Meadow, with the Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Eva Beata (Erickson) Feuerhak

1914-1999

Eva Beata Feuerhak, 84, of Austin, Minnesota, a homemaker, died Sunday, January 10, 1999, at her daughter's home in Austin.

Eva Beata Erickson was born May 8, 1914, in Prosper, Minn. She married Francis Feuerhak Feb. 23, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, sewing and quilting.

Survivors include three daughters, Audrey Sears of Charles City, Iowa, Diane Hanson of Austin and Barb (Mrs. Jerry) Hahn of Spring Valley; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Johnson of Greenfield, Wis., and Doris Peterson of Mabel.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin with the Rev. William Natzke officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Veryl D. (Evenson) Finch

1918-1999

Veryl D. Finch, 81, of Austin, Minnesota, and formerly of Lanesboro, died Sunday, November. 14, 1999, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Veryl D. Evenson was born March 29, 1918, in Lanesboro and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1936. She moved to Austin in 1939 and was employed at Hormel Foods Corp. from 1939 to 1945. In November 1945, she married John Finch at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. He died in 1965. She enjoyed cooking, golf, bowling and fishing.

Survivors include two brothers, Orel Evenson and Donald Evenson, both of Austin. Two brothers preceded her in death.

The funeral was Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Jerald F. Finhart

1937-1999

Jerald F. Finhart, 62, of Stewartville, Minnesota, died of an apparent heart attack Sunday, July 11, 1999, at his home.

He was born February 22, 1937, in Grand Meadow. He grew up on the family farm in the area and graduated from Grand Meadow High School. On October 10, 1959, he married Venita L. Friemann in Preston and they lived in Rochester until moving to rural Stewartville in 1969. He farmed and also was employed at IBM from 1957 to 1991. His wife works at Stewartville Animal Clinic. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Debra K. Finhart (Mrs. Luther Bonow) of Utica, Sandra (Mrs. Tim) Wood of Rochester and Barbra (Mrs. Terry) Quandt of rural Grand Meadow; five grandchildren; and his mother, Ruth Finhart of Grand Meadow.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville with the Rev. Ron Allen officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Jennie O. (Opsal) Fretty

1900-1999

Jennie O. Fretty, 99, of Austin, Minnesota, and an Iowa native, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at Burr Oak Manor in Austin.

Jennie O. Opsal was born April 4, 1900, in Armstrong, Iowa, and attended Nazareth Lutheran Church there. On April 11, 1918, she married Elmer Fretty. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth of Grand Meadow; two daughters, Muryne Bonnes and Phyllis (Mrs. Matthew) Gerhard, both of Austin; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby (Mrs. Richard) Krum of Armstrong, Iowa; and a brother, Vergil Opsal of Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, a daughter, five sisters and three brothers.

The funeral was Friday at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Dale Schaffer officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

Mildred H. Ellinghuysen

1904-1999

Mildred H. Ellinghuysen, 94, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and formerly of Rochester and Grand Meadow, died Sunday, August 22, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea where she had lived since 1993.

Mildred Henslin was born Dec. 29, 1904, in Racine and moved to Holbrite, Saskatchewan, Canada, with her family when she was 5 years old. In 1918 she returned to Minnesota, graduated from Spring Valley High School, and after completing Preston Teachers Training taught in rural schools in rural schools in Fillmore and Mower counties. She married Ben Ellinghuysen in 1924 and they farmed in Mower County. After his death in 1957 she moved to Rochester and was a dormitory counselor for the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing. She moved to Minneapolis in 1972 and joined Mount Olivet Lutheran Church there in 1977. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

Survivors include a son, Lyle Ben; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Bertha Krahn of Rochester.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Grand Meadow Lutheran church with the Rev. Jerry Merkouris officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Verda L. (Sproul)(Blade) Errington

1914-1999

Verda L. Errington, 84, of LeRoy, a former Libby's employee and V & H Cafe owner, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Riceville Community Nursing Home in Riceville, Iowa.

Verda L. Sproul was born July 30, 1914, in Barns City, Iowa. In 1930 she married George Blade in Chester, Iowa, and they were later divorced. She married Howard Errington on July 30, 1939, in Osage, Iowa. He preceded her in death. During her working years, she was a housekeeper in Austin and LeRoy, worked for Mendelson and Halling Produce, farmed, owned V & H Cafe in LeRoy, and worked for LPC and Libby's and at a number of other jobs. She retired at age 77 due to her husband's ill health.

Survivors include a son, George Blade of Spring Valley; two daughters, Edna (Mrs. Glen) Erie of Marion, Iowa, and Kathaleen Swancott of Osage, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Grubb of Ragers, Alaska; and four sisters, Letha Spencer of Elba, Mildred Eastman of Riceville, Maxine (Mrs. Leonard) Klassen of Adams, and Sara (Mrs. Everett) Leland of Bricelyn, Minn. A son and a grandson preceded her in death.

The funeral was at First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Jerry Olson of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the LeRoy Cemetery.

Joyce Laverne (Martinson) Cowan-Batt

1928-1999

Joyce Cowan-Batt, 71, of Dexter was a longtime telephone company president, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Joyce Laverne Martinson was born March 30, 1928, in Wadena, Minnesota, and graduated valedictorian of her class at Grand Meadow High School. She attended Miss Woods Teachers College and St. Olaf College and then taught elementary school for a number of years. In 1973 she became president of Home Telephone Co. in Grand Meadow, a position she held until the time of her death. On Aug. 26, 1990, she married Don Batt. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Cowan of Central Point, Ore.; two sons, Scott Cowan of Grand Meadow and Reed Cowan of Rochester; seven stepchildren, Paul Batt of Grand Meadow, Rodney Batt of Cass Lake, Minn., Dale Batt of Dexter, Tracy Batt of Eagan, Minn., Susan Batt of LeRoy, Jack Dunn II of Hopkins, Minn., and Tom Berg of Danbury, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Jorgenson of Centuria, Wis.

The funeral was Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elkton with the Rev. Diane Joseph officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Donald Thomas Davis

1926-1999

Donald Thomas Davis, 73, of Grand Meadow, a longtime area farmer, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Grand Meadow Health Care Center where he had resided a short time.

Born January 6, 1926, in Grand Meadow Township, he grew up there, and attended a rural school and Grand Meadow High School. From 1950 to 1952 he served in the Army. After his discharge he returned to Grand Meadow and farmed on the family farm.

Survivors include three sisters, Laurene (Mrs. Sheldon) Churchill of Dexter, Marcella (Mrs. Frank) Spellman and Teresa (Mrs. Truman) Nelson, both of Grand Meadow; and two brothers, Raymond and Glen, both of Grand Meadow. A sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

Donald R. DeYoung

1922-1999

Donald R. DeYoung, 76, of Rochester, a retired Mayo Clinic employee, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Saint Marys Hospital.

He was born September 30, 1922, in Dexter, Minnesota. He grew up there and moved to Wykoff in 1941. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the Army Medical Corps. On Feb. 7, 1946, he married Lydia Horbatiuk in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 1948 he returned to southeast Minnesota and was a microbiologist at Mayo Clinic for 36 years until retiring in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Timothy of New York City and Lynn of Helena, Mont.; two daughters, Patricia Koukides of Rochester and Jan (Mrs. Michael) Haney of Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Everett of Austin, Minn, and Dallas of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and three sisters, Grace Lucas of Spring Valley, Janet (Mrs. Max) Swann of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Delores Gage of Milwaukee. A sister and a brother preceded him in death.

No services are planned. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Erma Emma (Puck) Bush

1913-1999

Erma E. Bush, 85, of Grand Meadow, a homemaker, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Grand Meadow Health Care Center where she had resided a short time.

Erma Emma Puck was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Sioux Valley Township, Jackson County, Minn., graduated from Sioux Valley High School and went on to teach in Bruster and Sioux Valley. On Nov. 20, 1937, she married Charles H. Bush Jr. in Spirit Lake, Iowa; he died in 1983. Mrs. Bush was active in 4-H, Farm Bureau, garden club and birthday club, and was PTA president. She was a member of United Church in Grand Meadow and the UCW, and enjoyed making dolls, quilting, gardening and crossword puzzles. She organized the recognition dinner for the seniors at the high school and read to residents at the Grand Meadow Care Center.

Survivors include four sons, Leslie and Dale, both of Grand Meadow, Jerry of Spring Valley and Glen of Tripoli, Iowa; three daughters, Carol (Mrs. Harry) Meyer of Byron, Mary (Mrs. Paul) Fay of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Janette (Mrs. Gary) Stromley of Northfield, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harlan Puck of Lake Park, Iowa, and two sisters, Alva Schwarzenbach of Mesa, Ariz., and Laura Mae (Mrs. Arnold) Rients of Lakefield, Minn. A sister also preceded her in death.

The funeral was Saturday at the United Church in Grand Meadow with the Rev. Rob Gamble officiating. Burial in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Earl Raymond Carter

1924-1999

Earl Raymond Carter, 74, of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, retired from a career in the Air Force, died Saturday, January 30, 1999, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.

He was born February 18, 1924, in Bennington Township, Mower County, and graduated from Grand Meadow High School. He was a member of the Grand Meadow Gun Club and National Rifle Association, and was an avid trap shooter, hunter and cardplayer.

Survivors include two brothers, Roy of Grand Meadow and Paul of Colorado Springs, Colo. A brother preceded him in death.

The funeral was Tuesday at United Church of Grand Meadow with the Rev. Rob Gamble officiating. Burial was in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Kathern Louise Brewster, 41, of Lanesboro, Minnesota, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born December 1, 1947, in Austin, graduated from Austin High School in 1976 and took the two-year secretarial course at Austin Vocational Technical Institute. She owned several businesses in Austin and Lanesboro, including the Lanesboro Superette, Brewster's Outfitters and, most recently, the Brewster Red Hotel. She enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, canoeing, sailing, entertaining and cooking.

Survivors include her husband, Mark; her mother, Marie "Viola" Barth of Austin; two stepchildren, Scott Brewster and Rachel Ramseth; three brothers, Doug Barth, Darryl Barth and Russ Barth, all of Austin; and a sister, Debra Barth of Austin.

The funeral was held Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, with burial in Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

Theodore G. "Ted" Betsinger, 61, of Austin, a handyman, died Wednesday, August 4, 1999, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born July 7, 1938, in New Hampton, Iowa. On June 29, 1957, he married LaVonne Helmers at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. He was an Air Force veteran and enjoyed fixing things and working on his computer.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Rose (Mrs. Dan) Srock of Austin; three grandchildren; six brothers, Lester of Thomson, Ill., Robert and Virgil of Aurora, Ill., Russell of Spring Valley, Richard of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and William of Blaine, Minn.; and two sisters, Nancy (Mrs. Emery) Eckert of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Betty (Mrs. Richard) Finkelson of Austin. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

A funeral Mass was Saturday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with the Rev. Virgil Duellman officiating. Burial was in the London, Minn., Cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 91.

Charles W. "Bill" Blade

1935-1999

Charles W. "Bill" Blade, 64, formerly of LeRoy, Minnesota, died Friday, February 26, 1999, at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin, Minnesota, following a lengthy illness.

He was born January 31, 1935, in Chester, Iowa, the son of George E. and Verda (Sproul) Blade. He was raised in the LeRoy and McIntire, Iowa areas. He served in the United States Navy from 1952-56 with time spent in Korea.

He married Pat Cloninger in 1957 in Long Beach, Calif., where the couple made their home. They were later divorced. He worked for McDonnell Douglas in California for many years. He returned to Minnesota in 1989 making his home in LeRoy and Plainview, Minn., where he worked for Lakeside Packing and Libby's in Rochester. He became a resident of Spring Valley Care Center in Spring Valley in December 1998.

He was a member of the Plainview American Legion.

He is survived by two sons, Steven and David, both of Long Beach; one daughter, Linda Blade of Long Beach; two grandchildren; his mother, Verda Errington of the Riceville Community Nursing Home in Riceville, Iowa; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Lorraine Blade of Spring Valley; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Edna and Glen Erie of Marion, Iowa, and Kathaleen Swancut of Osage, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather.

A graveside service with military rites was held Monday, March 1, at the Wayne Cemetery in rural Mcintire, Iowa, with the Rev. Steve Elderbrook of the First Presbyterian Church of LeRoy officiating.

Jerry A. Bates

1939-1999

Jerry A. Bates, 59, of Wichita Falls, Texas, died December 3, 1999, in Bethania Hospital in Wichita Falls.

He was born December 22, 1939, in Grand Meadow, Minnesota. On November 1, 1963, he married Donna Klock in Mason City, Iowa.

He served in the armed forces as an FA radio mechanic in Korea and Germany. He was employed at IBM in Rochester for 26 years before his retirement. He was a member of Dexter United Methodist Church and served on the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. After moving to Wichita Falls in 1993, he became a member of Present Evangel Temple.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin of Wichita Falls and Brian of Byron; a daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Weller of Henderson, Nevada; a sister, Janice Schwanke of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a great-grandson and a daughter.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Dexter United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Wilson officiating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery in Austin, with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Dale R. Benson

1929-1999

Dale R. Benson of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, died early Friday, June 11, 1999, at his home from cancer.

He was born October 26, 1929, in Clarion, Iowa, and graduated from the Alexander, Iowa, high school. He married Darlene Rierson in Belmond, Iowa, on February 14, 1951. He served in the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He entered the United States Army Reserves on March 29, 1953, and remained in the reserves until June 28, 1959. In 1953, the couple moved to Grand Meadow where they farmed and he was an insurance adjuster for Spring Valley Mutual Insurance and for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. He and his son also started the Benson Construction Co.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Denny of Grand Meadow and Dave of Rochester; one daughter, Darcy (Mrs. Terry) Hanken of Grand Meadow; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Max of Houston, Minnesota, Rex of Plano, Texas, Reggie of Grand Meadow and Duane of Lanesboro, and two sisters, Dixie (Mrs. Ron) Mathews of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and Valjean (Mrs. Tom) Thorsen of Grand Meadow.

The funeral was Monday at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church with the Rev. Wayne Vogt officiating. Burial in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

William Coager 'Buggs' Belden

1926-1999

William Coager "Buggs" Belden, 73, of Austin died Friday, July 16, 1999, at the home of his brother, with whom he resided. His death followed a brief illness with cancer.

He was born Jan. 6, 1926, in Spring Valley. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion.

He worked for Hill Roofing for 32 years.

Survivors include three brothers, Otis Belden of Minneapolis and Harold and Orpheus Belden of Austin. He was preceded in death by three brothers and seven sisters.

Services were held Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home with the Rev. Virgil Duellman officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery with graveside rites by American Legion Post 91.

Lois Bussell Van Riper, 77, formerly of the Grand Meadow area, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at Sunrise Escondido West Nursing Home in Escondido, Calif.

Lois Bussell was born January 31, 1921, in Grand Meadow and attended Grand Meadow schools, graduating from high school in 1938. On Feb. 16, 1939, she married Dale Van Riper in Osage, Iowa. They lived in the Grand Meadow area for several years before moving to California.

Survivors include her husband; a son, David of Escondido; two grandsons; three sisters, Marian (Mrs. Verne) Jensen of Santa Barbara, Calif., Shirley (Mrs. Everett) deYoung of Austin and ADA Goodsell of Dresbach, Minn.; and three brothers, Minar L. Bussell of Stewartville, Charles Bussell of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and Harry Bussell of Grand Meadow.

The funeral was Thursday at Fellowship Methodist Church in Austin with the Rev. George Toschak officiating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery.

Nina Belle VanTries, 95, of LeRoy, Minnesota, a homemaker, died Friday, August 28, 1998, at the Spring Valley Care Center.

Nina Belle Cleveland was born January 1, 1903, in White Pigeon, Illinois. She married Guy VanTries on November 3, 1920, in Glenwood, Minnesota.

Survivors include four sons, Harry of LeRoy, Donald of Spring Valley, Laurence of Bimini, Texas, and Richard of The Colony, Texas; three daughters, Lucille VanTries of LeRoy, Marjorie Teare of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Janet Hove of Spring Valley; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, a great-granddaughter and two brothers and a sister.

Helen Maxine Walker, 80, a homemaker and employee of the Austin Country Club, died Thursday, September 24, 1998, at her home.

Helen Maxine Taylor was born Oct. 23, 1917, in Moravia, Iowa. She married Joseph Walker on January. 14, 1939, in Albert Lea and was a homemaker until 1969, when she started to work for the Austin Country Club. Her husband died in 1997. She was a member of the Brownsdale United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school, was a member of UMW, Mary Martha Circle, the neighborhood birthday club and the senior citizens' group in Brownsdale.

Survivors include two daughters, Barb (Mrs. Darwin) Olson of Byron and Cheryl McCready of St. Charles; five sisters, Waunita Back of Ostrander, Erma Legler of Austin, Rita Blake of Albert Lea, Mary Lou Stewart of Racine and Janice Fortney of Cresco, Iowa; and three brothers, Delmer Taylor of Sun City, Iowa, James Taylor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mabry Jr. Taylor of Spring Valley.

BURIED AT FRANKFORD CEMETERY, MOWER COUNTY

James T. Westphal, 61, of rural Stewartville, died Monday morning, January 12, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Westphal was born Oct. 15, 1936, in Spring Valley, the son of Theodore and Katherine (Wobke) Westphal. He served with the US Air Force in Germany from 1954 to 1958. He married Alyce Krieger June 9, 1953, in Spring Valley. The couple made their home in Spring Valley, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator in the area. For the last few years they had lived in the Rochester area.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Teddie Eskew of Zumbrota, Kris Renaux of Stewartville and Amy Myers of Spring Valley; one son, James of North Pole, Alaska; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl of Spring Valley and August of Mabel; and three sisters, Francis Link of Spring Valley, Margaret Thompson of Spring Valley and Mabel Hamersma of Cherry Grove.

He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Arne M. Windfeldt

1920-1998

Arne M. Windfeldt, 77, of Austin, died unexpectedly at his home of natural causes June 1, 1998.

He was born to Anne Marie Christine (Madsen) and Peter Windfeldt on June 16, 1920, in Viola Center, Iowa. He attended school in Viola Center, graduating in 1938, after which he attended a trade school in Lake City, Iowa, where he studied sheet metal. He moved to Baltimore, Md., and worked for Glen L. Martin, an airplane factory. He transferred to Omaha, Neb., and married Delephine Schoon on Feb. 13, 1943. He served in World War II from March of 1944 until October, 1946, stationed in the Philippine Islands as a sergeant in the Air Force.

After the war he worked in the family grocery store in Viola Center. They relocated to Austin in 1952, where he worked as a salesman for Gambles Hardware Store until 1956, when he transferred to Gamble's in Portage, Wis. In 1960 he moved back to Austin and because a real estate broker for United Business Brokers. They moved to Peterson, Minn., in 1974, where he had a hobby farm as well as his brokerage work. In 1987 he retired and they returned to Austin. His hobbies included woodworking, farming, camping and building his own boat. He always liked to keep busy.

Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and E. Michael House of Hudson, Ohio, Janis and Craig Dugas of Roseville, Minnesota; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Janet Windfeldt of Apple Valley, Minn.; sisters, Wilma Keyes of LaGrange, Ill., Verla Mae and Frank Hess of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Mary Windfeldt of Evergreen, Colo.; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Funeral services were Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Don Deines officiating. Military rites were by VFW Post 1216.

Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association Minnesota Affiliate, 4701 West 77 St., Edina, MN 55435.

Lloyd V. Crum

1924-1999

Lloyd V. Crum, 74, Spring Valley, Minnesota, and formerly of Racine, died Friday, October 15, 1999, at Spring Valley Health Care Center where he had resided for four years.

Born December 16, 1924, in Ames, Iowa, he attended Grand Meadow schools and after graduating from high school in 1942 attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette until joining the Army. A staff sergeant in the infantry, he participated in Day Two of the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge with Patton's Third Army, and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He later enlisted in the weather branch of the Air Corps and served in northern Alaska for several years.

After the service, he returned to Minnesota, farmed in the area and operated the Racine grain elevator with his father. After his father's death, he continued operation of the elevator and also diversified into other lines, particularly the piping of natural gas to Racine, Grand Meadow and Dexter. In 1995 he sold the elevator and gas company. He was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Phoebe Smith of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Catherine Mealey of Laramie, Wyo.

The funeral was Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Racine with the Rev. Jean Dumas officiating. Burial was in Grand Meadow Cemetery.
