Daryll Dean Grunwaldt 1928-1942
Brownsdale Lad Drowns
In Pool Sunday
Boy, 14, Municipal Pool's
First Fatality; Cerebral
Hemorrhage Believed Is
Cause of Death.
Apparently suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, Darrel Dean Grunwaldt, 14-year-old Brownsdale boy, was drowned late Sunday in the Austin municipal swimming pool. It was the first fatality of the pool.
Darrel was removed from the pool less than a minute after he went down, but efforts to revive him, which were continued for about two hours, were in vain. It was believed that he was dead when removed from the pool.
Coroner, B.J. Cronwell declared that it was practically certain that the boy suffered cerebral hemorrhage becasue of the fact that he did not come to the surface after going down the first time. His lungs contained very little water. It was reported that he had eaten heavily before going swimming.
Darrel went down shortly before 7:30 p.m. and Lelyn Lorimore, 18, who was in the pool, noticed the body in the water and brought it to the surface. Artificial respiration was administered by the life guards, Irene Russell and Jimmy Morrow, until the fire department arrived with the inhalator.
The boy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gronwaldt, who live on a farm two miles northeast of Brownsdale. Darrel had attended a picnic at Todd Park with his parents and friends and had eaten dinner about 6:30 o'clock.
Services for the victim were held Wednesday at 1:30 at the home and at 3:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in Brownsdale. Rev. D. L. DeCourcey, officiating.
