The Comfort and Sweetness of Peace
After the clouds, the sunshine,
after the winter, the spring,
After the shower, the rainbow
For life is a changeable thing.
After the night, the morning,
bidding all darkness cease,
After life’s cares and sorrows,
the comfort and sweetness of peace

Rose Creek girl, 16, dies in car-bus crash near Adams
ADAMS, MINNESOTA - A 16-year-old girl died Wednesday after the car she
was driving collided with a school bus on an icy road about two miles west
of Adams in Mower County.
Tess M. Landherr, of Rose Creek, was northbound on Minnesota Highway
56 when she lost control of the vehicle because of road and weather
conditions, and was struck by the southbound bus, according to a Minnesota
State Patrol report.
A passenger in the car, Anna Bruggeman, 15, of Rose Creek, was
transported to Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester with what the report
describes as serious injuries.
The crash occurred at about 3:20 p.m. near Mower County Road 5. Road
conditions at the time were described as icy, with blowing and drifting
snow in the area.
Poor conditions are also being cited for another fatal crash late
Wednesday night in a rollover involving two vehicles on Interstate 90,
according to a state patrol report. The crash was at milepost 200 and
was reported at 11:36 p.m. I-90 was closed for several hours as the
state patrol reconstructed the accident. No further information was
available this morning.
About 50 students from Southland Elementary School in Rose Creek were
aboard the school bus, which was driven by Kim A. Bissen, 41. None of the
elementary students were seriously injured, said Superintendent Steve
Sallee, but an 8-year-old girl, Rachel Heller, whose address isn't
included in the report, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the
Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin. Bissen also escaped injury, Sallee
said.
Landherr, Bruggeman and Bissen were wearing their seat belts, according
to the state patrol report.
The students on the bus were transported by another bus to the Adams
Fire Hall, where parents arrived in a steady stream until the final student
was picked up at about 5 p.m. Minnesota 56 was closed for about four hours
as the crash was investigated.
Eric Padilla, 8, of Dexter, was on the bus at the time of the crash.
"I didn't get hurt or anything," he said. "The driver told us, 'Just stay
calm.' I wasn't scared."
His brother, Alex Padilla, said his mother heard about the accident,
then called home to see if Eric had been dropped off. His father then
called the school and learned that Eric was safe. "I'm just glad he's OK,"
Alex Padilla said.
Landherr was a member of the Southland Dance Team, and was recently
named All-Conference. The dance team banquet, scheduled for tonight, has
been canceled. Condolences and remembrances were posted to Landherr's
Facebook page and friends were tweeting similar sentiments, as well was
childhood photos of Landherr on Twitter.

ADAMS, MINNESOTA -- Funeral plans are set for a teen girl killed in a
Wednesday afternoon crash.
The funeral for 16-year-old Tess Landherr will be Sunday at 1pm at St.
Peter's Catholic Church in Rose Creek. Visitation will be from 3:30-6:30 pm
on Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin.
The Minnesota State Patrol says Landherr was driving, lost control of
her vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming school bus on Wednesday
afternoon. Landherr died in the accident and the passenger, 15-year-old
Anna Bruggeman, is listed in critical condition.
It is something those at Southland did not think would happen to them.
So school leaders gathered Wednesday night to figure out how to run their
school day.
On any other day the hallways are filled with the sounds of happy
students making their way to class. On this day, it is all different.
"It's overwhelming sadness in our hallways, we have a lot of people,
a lot of kids and staff members, we're a close-knit family here at
Southland and everybody knows everybody so this has hit us very, very hard,"
said Steve Sallee, Superintendent at Southland Schools. Rural districts
like Southland often rely on their neighboring districts for help during
tough times.
"We reached out to some other area schools for some support. Austin
Public Schools actually sent over their entire crisis team. We've got
all their social workers, councilors, even their high school principal
came over to relieve our high school principal so he could be out in
classrooms and getting around today," Sallee said. A few other schools
have offered their support in Southland's time of need.
"We have a lot of things in place today so kids have a place to go,
they've got people to talk to and nobody should be alone," Sallee said.
While there may be extra support on hand, teachers are also playing their
part on counselor.
"Best thing I can do is to be there and listen, just be there for them.
I have not had all of the training, you know, I'm a high school teacher and
I deal with things the kids have day in and day out," said Ethan Riggin, a
Social Studies teacher at Southland. But Thursday he had to deal with more
than his normal load.
"The class that I start of the day with is the class that Tess is in
and it was all juniors so it was all of her classmates and that class was
very rough," Riggin said.
As impossible as it may be, they are trying to keep on track with the
school's daily routine.
"We're running through our normal class schedule but with a lot of
flexibility, kids are able to leave the classrooms if they need to. We
told teachers that there really are no rules today on how to run your
classrooms so just go with the flow and do what you need to do," Sallee
said.
Thursday's dance team awards banquet was cancelled. Tess was part of
the team. There will be a "Yellow-Out for Tess" in Mankato for the girls'
basketball game Friday night.
Sallee says the last he heard, Bruggeman was going into surgery. She
is listed in critical condition but he says the prognosis is pretty good.

Robert G. Nagel, 84, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, March 2, 2013,
at Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Austin.
Robert George Nagel was born September 5, 1928, at Belvidere, Illinois,
to Ernest and Ella (Gerdes) Nagel. He graduated from Austin High School and
went on to serve in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany during
the Korean War. He later married Orinne Elford.
Bob was a highly skilled brick and block mason. He was a perfectionist
in all he did, from his masonry jobs to the maintenance on his home. As a
young man, he enjoyed cars, and always an artist, he was continually drawing
or wood carving an amusing caricature, scene or portrait. Around 1980, with
the encouragement from his wife, Orinne, he began a successful career as a
wildlife artist. Bob worked long hours studying anatomy and colors of the
duck and bird species he created. He won numerous "Best of Show" awards at
world championship competitions. Later, he created and decorated carousel
horses which were very happy moments for him. While creating his art, he
was inspired by many types of music including country, gospel and classical.
We are grateful he had the opportunity to use his great talent and leave
behind beautiful creations and memories.
He was an extraordinarily devoted family man, who was compassionate,
kind and humble. He kept his family laughing with his lighter-side of
life comments and puns. Bob will be greatly missed by his family, friends
and the St. Mark's staff who lovingly cared for him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
