Ludwig Decker 1805-1899
NONAGENARIAN TAKES HIS LIFE
Ludwig Decker, Despondent
Over Ill Health, Leaps
to Death from a Window.
Discouraged by months of ill health in the evening of his
life, Ludwig Decker, 93 years of age, jumped from a second-story window in
Austin, yesterday morning, and killed himself. His son, who is the President
of the Austin Packing company, lives at Superior street and Park avenue,
and with him Mr. Decker had made his home for some time. He never had
known sickness till late in the winter, when he was stricken with a
lingering complaint. He lost heart and his despondency caused his family
to watch him closely.
He was left alone for a few minutes in the morning. A
member of the family heard a crash in the garden, and hastening out found
the old man lying on the ground, dead. An open window above told how he
had killed himself. In falling he had struck a lattice through which he
crashed to the ground. The fall broke his neck. Two weeks ago Mr. Decker,
the neighbors say, tried to end his life. At that time he secured a knife
and cut his throat and stabbed himself in the right side. Medical aid was
called promptly and his life was saved.
Three children, Jacob D. Decker of Austin, Albert Decker
of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. Susan Hormel of Austin, Minn., survive him. At
the Coroner's inquest in the afternoon a verdict of suicide while despondent
was returned.
(Chicago Tribune, 9 July 1899, pg. 1)
NOTE: Ludwig Decker's daughter, Susan (Decker) Hormel,
was the matriarch of the Hormel family.
