Personal trainer, AHS grad dies suddenly at 35
Former Austinite Steven Toms led the epitome of a healthy lifestyle. All who knew the personal trainer could attest: He didn’t drink or smoke, and kept a nutritious diet at all times. “His doctor told him he was the healthiest person he’d ever seen,” said Charlotte Andersen, a Shape Magazine writer who had worked with Steve. “I think that’s why his death was such a shock to everybody … Most of us thought it was a joke.”
Steven Michael Toms, 35, died suddenly at his home in Prior Lake Tuesday. The husband, father and friend was a dedicated trainer with Lifetime Fitness for much of his career, and put those around him first, client or not. Steve had been married less than a year to his wife, Ashley, and was looking forward to raising his 2 year-old son, Jameson, before he died from what may have been heart problems, his mother, Lisa Toms, suspects. “He was in perfect shape,” his mom said. “He did everything. He had so many friends.”
Steve grew up in Austin an only child to Roger and Lisa Toms, and wasted no time indulging in his love for fitness and sports. During his time at Austin High School, he played on the football, baseball and hockey teams, and was a captain on all three, said his cousin Lindsey Pratt. He left Austin after graduating to pursue a football scholarship at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
In his career, he traveled around, helping set up new fitness centers and providing personal training. For about three years before he got married, he trained the Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders. While lifting weights at the gym one day, Steve met Ashley Danielson. He became her trainer, and then her husband in November 2011.
When Andersen first met him, Steve told her he wanted to see how many pushups she could do in one minute. She got down on the floor and pumped out as many as she could, only to stop amid snickers from the other gym workers. Several minutes had passed, and they wanted to see how long she would keep going. “He was sort of famous for being the gym prankster,” Andersen said.
But packaged along with his sense of humor was a kind heart. Steve made a
point of helping out those around him, whether or not it would benefit him
personally. One time he helped Andersen find sources for a magazine story,
simply because she mentioned needing them. It was just the way he was. “He
kept coming up with stories for me, things to write about, people to
interview,” Andersen said. He was equally good to his family. “When
I was little, he drove me around everywhere,” Pratt said. “He was always
so caring.”
Steve was always willing to help someone, even if it was a total stranger. All who knew him said he’d readily give the shoes off his feet to anyone who needed them. He once worked extensively with a woman who had become paraplegic after a car accident in Salt Lake City. With his help, she regained control of her legs and made a full recovery.
“He just wanted to help her get her life back,” Andersen said. “It didn’t matter who you were, he would learn your name and even remember it months later. He made everyone feel special. He made everybody feel like somebody.”
Andersen said Steve used to be a big partier, but he cleaned up his life to be a good role model for his son and his clients. He was an evangelical Christian and active at his church. In his free time, he coached little league football.
Though Andersen had met him less than a year ago, she had come to know Steve so well she wrote a blog entry about his passing. By the time friends and family showed up at Steve’s visitation on Thursday, more than 100 people had commented on Andersen’s post offering their condolences. Many said they were moved to tears by her depiction of Steve, even though they had never met him.
Toward the end of his life, Steve settled in Lakeville so he could be
close to his ill mother, Lisa Toms. Lisa has a bad heart, and often Steve
would encourage her to get better for her grandson. “Mom, you need to get
well to be here for Jameson,” Steve would say, according to Lisa.
Lisa said she believes the same issue arose with her son. Steve’s heart
has been sent for testing, but another week will pass before the results
are in. In the meantime, his mom expects close to a thousand people to
attend Steve’s funeral. The service will be held at 1 p.m. today at River
Valley Church, 14898 Energy Park in Apple Valley, with visitation an hour
before. Dan Blustin, general manager at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, said
his gym is holding an event after the funeral where those who knew Steve
can spend time together and reminisce.
“If you met him, you’d never forget him,” Lisa said.

Alex S. Campbell 1859-1939
A.S. CAMPBELL, 80
DIED JANUARY 24
FUNERAL FRIDAY
WAS FORMER AUSTIN MAYOR
AND BUSINESS MAN FOR MANY YEARS
Alex S. Campbell, well known Austin business man and for
years of the official staff of our city, died Tuesday evening shortly after
9:30 in Kahler Hospital in Rochester following an illness of many months.
Two weeks previous to his passing, Mr. Campbell was taken
to Rochester for an operation and survived the ordeal in fine condition and
seemingly was gaining very favorably. On Saturday the son, Major Alex
Campbell left for his post of duty, feeling assured that all as well.
The daugther, Mrs. Minnie Woodward and son visited him on Sunday and
found him in cheerful mood and gaining. Tuesday evening without warning,
Mr. Campbell fell into sleep for his final rest.
Learned Milling Trade
Alex S. Campbell, son of John Campbell, native of Ayershire,
Scotland, and Catherine Graham, native of Montreal, Canada, was born in Rice
County, December 20, 1859. The family resided on a farm and here attended
rural and village schools later attending school in Minneapolis and gaining
a splendid knowledge of business rudiments. He returned to work on the
parental home farm for some time, then went to Owatonna, where he learned
the milling trade which he followed for many years.
On December 20, 1883 he married Mary Hunkins of Owatonna,
who died a few years ago. The three children survive, Mrs. Minnie Woodward
of the home, who had been with her parents in their last years and giving
her life to their comforts, a son, Major Alex Campbell of West Point, N.Y.,
and Frances, of the school faculty of Cincinnati, Ohio.
There are two grandsons, John Woodward of this city, who
also remained in the home to assist in comfort for his loved grandparent
and Robert, who, about a year ago was transferred in employ of the Hormel
company to Atlanta, Georgia. There is one great grandchild, Joan Woodward
of Austin.
Products to Entire Northwest
In 1886 Mr. Campbell, with his brother, A.G. Campbell,
engaged in the milling business in Austin, being the owner-operators of
the small mill just east of the Milwaukee depot location, at Dobbins Creek
and a short distance north of the new highway bridge at East Oakland Ave.,
and Oakwood street. They did a flourishing business and their product was
well established and widely known.
He was the leading merchant miller in this section.
In 1890 the brothers bought the mill on Water street at the
east bank of the Cedar River, from the Engle brothers, who had retired.
The Campbell Mills grew in proportion and again they extended their
interests and bought the mill at Blooming Prairie and one in Owatonna.
All through the northwest the Campbell Mill products were known as Diamond
White, White Rose and Peerless flour and by-products.
50 Years in Civic Life
A busy life and hard work characterized the life of this
well known man, civic affairs received his best judgement and support in
any event when for upbuilding a community. This support and interest
continued for more than 50 years. He came here when Austin boasted 2,500
souls and today is near the mark of 20,000. That his business judgement was
fair to all is evidenced by his being sought for some office in city affairs
continually and so long as health and his years permitted, he gave his best
efforts.
Mr. Campbell served our interests as Mayor of the City of
Austin for two terms, in 1899 and 1900 and in 1910 and 1911. He led in a
race for State Senator from this district and served well the interests of
this community in 1903, 1905, 1907 and 1909. Ten years ago he was elected
to the office of city assessor and was again elected at the last election
last spring.
Mr. Campbell was of quiet nature, still of a fine sense of
humor and his friends knew him as loyal and willing to help another. He
was a splendid mathematician, thus making his work as assessor a pleasure,
rather than a burden, for he could master any situation. He was fair,
served alike to all so far as within his knowledge. His years belied him
as few could undertake so responsible a position and carry on the intricate
work as he did through the years and when health was fading.
Council Members, Pall Bearers
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday afternoon,
at the Mayer Funeral Home, Rev. R. Coleman in charge. Active pall bearers
will be members of the city council.

council groups and associated in activities connected with the Water and

associates and assistants in his duties as city assessor; John Gulden,
veteran member of the Water and Light Board and Walter Chestnut, neighbor
and life-long friend of the family.

James Edwin Conner 1932-2012
#1:
James Edwin Conner, 80, of Hutchinson, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday,
October 23, 2012, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee,
Minnesota. A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at
1:30 p.m. at the Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson, with interment in
the Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle Township, Mower County, Minnesota.
James Edwin “Jim” Conner was born on February 21, 1932, in Austin,
Mower County, Minnesota. He was the son of James and Mary Elizabeth
(Konecny) Conner. Jim was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed
in his faith as a youth. He received his education in Lyle, Minn., and
was a graduate of the Lyle High School Class of 1950. Jim furthered his
education at the Junior Tech College in Austin, Minnesota. Jim entered
active military service in the Army on November 26, 1952, and served his
country as a member of the 49th and the 149th Army Band during the Korean
War. He received an Honorable Discharge on Nov. 10, 1954.
On December 12, 1959, Jim was united in marriage to Janet Rappe at
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oelwein, Iowa. Jim and Janet resided in
Austin, Minn. until 1972, when they moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota. Jim and
Janet shared more than 52 years of marriage.
Jim was a mechanic by trade and was an instructor at Ridgewater College
in Hutchinson, Minn. He developed the first Public Motorcycle Mechanics
Program in the state of Minnesota, and his program was rated as the best
in nation in motorcycle magazines. He retired in 1997.
Jim was a true Renaissance man, a very smart man, a man of many interests
and lots of skills both with mechanical things and the written and spoken
word. He was a true life-long learner and had an extensive vocabulary. He
had the artist’s eye for beauty as demonstrated in his photographic work.
Jim was a musician in the 49th and 149th Army Band when he served his
country, and played a French horn. At that time, Vienna, Austria, was
a four power city and he played in the honor guard when the power was
transferred from the British to the U.S. and then again, when it was
transferred from the U.S. to Russia. He saw himself on news reels and
his band was featured in Life Magazine.
Jim had the enviable ability to walk in the other persons’ shoes and to
communicate with people on every societal spectrum on the scale. He loved
his fellow man as evidenced by his compassion for others. In his 80 years
of life, he was an artist, a singer, a musician, an actor, an entertainer,
“facilitator” for his Motorcycle Mechanics students and others who came to
him for the knowledge that he possessed; an English Literature major in his
college years and his continued interest in the new technologies (computers,
networks, etc.). He had the rare quality of taking pride in his students’
accomplishments and was delighted if the student got to be better than he
at the things Jim taught them. He was a gourmet chef and enjoyed cooking
(and science involved with it) and spreading his talents to his friends
and neighbors. He always enjoyed music and the theater.
It was demonstrated best by one of the ICU nurses who inquired “What did
he do?” After hearing the above, he said “What didn’t he do?” He had a life
fully lived and will be sorely missed by the people whose lives he touched
in a positive way- and there are many.
Jim passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at St. Francis Regional Medical
Center in Shakopee, Minn., at the age of 80 years.
