Mathias Schaefer is a native of Germany, was reared on his father’s farm and received a common school education. He emigrated to the United States, landing at New York, May 9th after a voyage of fifteen days. From New York Mr. Schaefer went to Iowa where he worked at farming one year, when he came to Mower County and went to work for Mr. Krebsbach, of Adams Township, remaining with his about four years, since which time he has been engaged in buying grain for Gilchrist & Co.

Mr. Schaefer was married to Miss Susanna Schaap in 1881. She is a native of Wisconsin. One child has blessed this union, Annie May.
